Niobe Way: Boys are Telling Us What's Wrong. Will We Finally Listen?

Niobe Way, NYU professor, researcher, and author of Deep Secrets, joins Charles and I to talk about boy's crisis of connection. Way's book Deep Secrets is the inspiration for Director Lukas Dhont's 2022 film Close, nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 95th Academy Awards and winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. In this wide ranging conversation we pose a simple question. We know what's at the root of boys' challenges. Thanks to Dhont's powerfully conceived and directed film we have an unprecedented opportunity to pay renewed attention to what boys have been saying in over three decades of Way's research. Will we finally listen?

Niobe Way's book Deep Secrets is available here.

How to Confront Gender and Masculinity in Schools (and make them better for everyone) - with Jason Ablin

How to Confront Gender and Masculinity in Schools (and make them better for everyone) - with Jason Ablin

Our schools, public or private, primary or secondary, rich or poor are in tumult. They were already institutions that semi-unintentionally bred dominance hierarchies and reinforced unhealthy gender roles, but now the fake controversies around curriculum and teaching are inhibiting the kinds of conversations that can actually make schools safer, more welcoming AND can actually improve test scores. In this episode, Mark and I have a virtual sit-down with “faculty whisper” and school culture expert Jason Ablin.

Jason Ablin is the author of The Gender Equation in School: How to Create Equity and Fairness for All Students. With over thirty years in education and educational leadership, he has served as a teacher, department chair, principal, and head of school.

As an instructor at American Jewish University’s graduate programs for teacher training he helps teachers to create gender aware classrooms and has taught year-long courses to teams of educators in graduate level seminars regarding the relationship between cognitive neuroscience and education.

Jason consults with schools across the country to help them create positive culture by:

  • Getting staff on same page with mission and vision,
  • Working on their own adult implicit bias and gender ideas
  • Getting back to putting kids first, building relationships, and having meaningful, caring conversations.

Jason, Mark, and I also talk about

  • Three main groups of boys and how they often interact to perpetuate dominance, bullying and harassment.
  • The differential suicide rate and how man box masculinity perpetuates  it
  • What steps adults can take to make school better for all kids.

Jason Provides a vision for how schools can build cultures and structures that empowers adults and nurtures kids, in particular boys.

Although this is a podcast for adult men we know we all have a role to play in healing, morning or taking accountability for our own childhood AND making it better for current and future generations of kids. Listening to this podcast can be a part of that adult adventure.

Finn Cox: What a Trans Man Sees When He Steps Out as a Man

Finn Cox: What a Trans Man Sees When He Steps Out as a Man

Finn Cox is a transgender man, personal trainer, and content creator committed to activism through outreach. He began his YouTube channel, Finntastic Mr. Fox, in 2020 with the goal of providing resources for trans and cis people alike, which has since evolved into a means of connecting and educating through introspection.

He holds firm to the belief that building bridges is a better use of time and energy than building walls, and has recently focused this effort on the topic of masculinity. Having lived experience being perceived as both a woman and a man, Finn hopes to bring insight to the gendered cultural conditioning that impacts all of us. It has been a humbling, and fascinating journey, one that he hopes can help others grow as he continues to do so himself.

Making Your Workplace Better - Identifying and Ending Workplace Bullying with Linda Crockett and Animah Kosai

Making Your Workplace Better - Identifying and Ending Workplace Bullying with Linda Crockett and Animah Kosai

We are releasing this special episode in partnership with Speak Up at Work and in recognition of Workplace Bullying Awareness week. How does a dive into WPB fit in with a podcast on Healthy Masculinity? Well, one in three people are bullied at work and, as we’ll hear, male targets of bullying often experience the most significant impacts… up to and including suicide and premature death. The prevalence of domination culture in most workplaces, in combination with the isolating expectations of “Man Box” masculinity makes WPB a potent toxin for men, whether we are perpetrators, enablers, bystanders or targets.

To help us untangle all these roles, dig into the root causes of WPB, and to propose some system solutions and individual actions, Mark and I are joined by Linda Crocket and Animah Kosai, two people who’ve dedicated their lives to empowering others to prevent and recover from harassment and bullying at work.

Linda Crockett is a clinical social worker and activist who is the founder of the Canadian Institute of Workplace Bullying and Harassment Resource Centre Inc., (2010), the first and only full-service resource centre in Canada specific to psychological harassment.  Linda provides workplace management services to employers and employees, from all professions and industries.

Linda started the Workplace Bullying Awareness Week 10 yrs ago, and began inviting countries around the world to join in. She believes this is a worldwide issue and we need a worldwide solution. This year, every day between October 17-23rd, depending on where you are, you will  have access to podcasts, TV interviews, Radio Interviews, Blogs, Articles, online discussions, posters, t-shirts and so much more. This movement IS making a difference and as a result, positive changes are happening. For more information on this week, see the links in our shownotes.

Animah Kosai is a British barrister who speaks, writes and advises on Speaking Up in Organisations, specifically to break the silence on wrongdoing.

She founded Speak Up At Work to diagnose the Speak Up Culture in companies and assess their response to reports on wrongdoing, harassment, unsafe and unethical practices. This helps companies address emerging risks early enough before they get too big and become public.

In this episode, you’ll hear me confront my own complicity in the face of a workplace bully and how that complicity affected me. Listen to the full episode to learn how we can stop taking workplace culture for granted and find ways to make the workplace better for all of us.

Calling Men In - Interrupting Harassment and Rape Culture

Calling Men In - Interrupting Harassment and Rape Culture

In this episode, Mark and I explore the roots of domination culture and how men’s response to that culture can lead to acts of violence and rape.

Just a heads up… although the targets of male violence deserve attention, humanization, and support, in this conversation we do center the discussion on men - the men who allow or perpetuate violence against women, even if we think we don’t. We unpack men’s common reactions to stories of rape and harassment, our overt or covert role in rape culture, our resistance to taking action and how men can help each other to overcome that resistance.

In digging into the roots of the violence and the resistance to change, Mark and I do express empathy and solidarity with men trapped in domination culture AND we don’t let ourselves of other men off the hook. This is a fine line to walk but that's the line that needs to be navigated… men holding ourselves accountable and responsible while calling each other IN to allyship and activism with those who are victims of male violence.

Listen to the full episode to learn how men can push back against the code of silence that turns us into complicit bystanders and how we can become better allies, while actually creating a better, more connected life for ourselves.

Mark Winkler: Challenging Radicalized Masculinity

Mark Winkler: Challenging Radicalized Masculinity

How do we, as men, help other men put down the unhealthy attitudes and behaviors that are limiting them and hurting others? How do we call men in to the challenging work of crafting individual masculinities that include connection, inclusion, empathy and care?

In this episode, Mark and I get to have another rich, insight and laughter filled conversation with a powerful, engaged men's work practitioner. Our guest is Mark Winkler, who, after finishing up a successful career as a musical talent agent, developed an intensive Life Skills program to empower At-Risk young men to adopt safe and productive behavior.  More recently, Mark has focused on supporting fathers and families with wrap around mental health services and peer to peer men's groups.

Mark has become a specialist in gently, patiently engaging men in men's work. Part of his approach is to avoid triggering language like “toxic masculinity” which he says can send men packing. Instead, Mark describes his focus on identifying progress rather than calling for perfection.

Listen to the full episode to learn how we can call men in to the process of adopting de-radicalized manhood. Listen all the way to the end to learn how mens work is like scuba diving.

Key Takeaways:
  • When  calling men in to healthy or de-radicalized manhood, look for progress rather than perfection
  • Progress in behavior is more important than progress in “articulated” change (i.e. actions speak louder than words).

Judy Chu: Why Are Boys Hiding Who They Are?

Judy Chu: Why Are Boys Hiding Who They Are?

Our very young sons are hiding their powerful capacities for connection. Relying on years of research, Judy Chu explains exactly why this is happening and what the cost is to boys and men. This is a crucial listen for parents, but also for any who want to better understand the powerful internal emotional lives of very young boys and the ways in which we train them out of connecting.
Judy Chu is the author of
When Boys Become Boys. Her work clearly defines the ways in which our dominant culture of masculinity is putting boys are risk for lives that are dramatically more isolated and challenging. Chu is the advocate many of us wished we had had in our corner when we were young. When she gets fired up in defense of boys, and calls out what our culture of masculinity continues to do to them, it is both uplifting and deeply inspiring.

Graham Goulden: Breaking The Silence That Binds And Blinds Us

Graham Goulden: Breaking The Silence That Binds And Blinds Us

In this episode, Mark and I get to have a warm connecting talk with Graham Goulden a leadership and violence prevention trainer from the United Kingdom. Graham spent thirty years as a Scottish police officer and Chief Investigator specializing in criminal investigation, training, and crime prevention. During that part of his career, Graham noticed an important reality: almost all of the criminals he pursued and the victims he tried to protect were men or boys. He started wondering why we don’t talk about violence as a problem that predominantly affects males. AND one that can be solved by - mostly - men.

And now Graham leads his own training business - Cultivating Minds UK - where he focuses on creating space for honest, compassionate conversation that works to promote community, mental health, and teamwork. Part of Graham’s special sauce is his ability to “walk and chew gum” at the same time… He’s a strong cop who is open about his own vulnerabilities, he can both have empathy and hold people accountable, and he can support males who have been victims at the same time he works to prevent them and others from further perpetuating violence.

Listen to the full episode to learn how men can push back against the code of silence that turns us into complacent, complicit bystanders and how we can become champions in our own lives and the lives of others.

Paul Kivel on Why Ending Violence Against Women Demands Men Do Our "Work"

Paul Kivel on Why Ending Violence Against Women Demands Men Do Our "Work"

Over forty years ago, in partnerships with the Oakland Men's Project, author and activist Paul Kivel conceptualized "the act like a man box" putting into motion a central frame for the healthy masculinity movement. In this interview, Kivel talks about his history in men's work and his regrets about what remains to be done. Namely, collective action and a broader response to all forms of oppression. Paul Kivel is a powerful moral voice and a founding father of the healthy masculinity movement. Reach out to Paul and find his books at PaulKivel.com.

Join us for powerful conversations with the men and women leading the healthy masculinity movement. For generations, our culture has taught us a narrow and limiting set of rules for how to be a man. The end result? Epidemic levels of isolation and violence for boys and men and for the multitude of others who’s lives we impact.

But we can make a difference choice. We can choose a masculinity of connection and in return have healthier relationships, and more meaningful, lasting lives.

As a writer, speaker and consultant, Mark Greene has spent over a decade deconstructing our binary-riddled dialogues around manhood and masculinity. He consults to organizations world wide on diversity, inclusion and masculinity. Mark is the author of The Little #MeToo Book for Men, Remaking Manhood and is co-author with Dr. Saliha Bava of The Relational Book for Parenting. Mark Deconstructs Man Box Culture

Mark Deconstructs Man Box Culture

In our latest podcast, Charles is kind enough to host Mark for a deep dive titled "Deconstructing Man Box Culture."

How does man box culture drive male and white supremacy? Here's how. Our deeply isolating dominance-based culture of masculinity suppresses boys ability to form and care for healthy relationships, while also insuring that women and girls, BIPOC, LGBTQI+ people, and immigrants bear the brunt of the harm created.

Join us for a detailed look at why men must break out of man box culture.

Jan Darwin Hutchins on Being In the Flow

Jan Darwin Hutchins on Being In the Flow

We have a virtual sit-down with Jan Darwin Hutchins. The conversation is wide ranging, warm, and open. Just a group of guys, sitting in front of a hearth, sharing ideas and support.

Charles first met Jan when he was co-facilitating a Mankind Project men’s initiation weekend. Jan’s been involved with MKP for decades and has helped scores of men down a path toward a more authentic and balanced masculinity. Jan started out his career as sports broadcaster and TV producer and even helped run an Emmy winning children’s show. But like many men who seemed to have it all figured out, Jan still felt a gap, a sense of something incomplete. In this podcast, Jan talks about his experience at his transformative rite of passage where he started to fill in that gap.

Jan, Mark, and Charles also talk about race, how to bridge divides, and the value of male friendships for anchoring, informing, and directing our lives.

Pull a chair up to the fire. You are invited into this conversation.

Key Takeaways:
  • We can hold two opposing ideas at the same time and let that help us bridge gaps within ourselves and between people.
  • We can find some peace and authenticity by accepting what is.

Jose Alejandro on Being, Authenticity, Wholeness & Wellness

Jose Alejandro on Being, Authenticity, Wholeness & Wellness

Getting real in a conversation about masculinity and race with Jose Alejandro. Jose’s masculinity story is both typical and unique. At a very young age he "had it all," a six figure salary, good looks, a healthy body, and a gorgeous girlfriend.  But something was missing...and something was preventing him from really succeeding at work and in his relationship. Fortunately Jose took the time to investigate and reclaim his missing parts, his full authentic masculinity.

And now Jose is running his own business promoting men’s comprehensive health. He offers coaching and workshops to other men as they work to find their true selves. As a man of color, Jose finds himself in an important role astride the divide between the mostly white men’s movement and the more diverse organizations confronting racism and inequality.

Listen to the full episode to learn how men confront their internal demons and how they can grapple with what appears to divide us. The end result of both kinds of struggles is - spoiler alert - connection, health, and richer life.

Key Takeaways:
  • There are multiple ways men can enter men’s work.
  • Talking about race and the different experiences men of color have is key to advancing men’s work.

Quote:

“Men spend 164 billion dollars on self care per year… but yet suicides rates are 79% men. So there’s this disparity… men are investing in themselves but there’s this dissonance in investing in their well being, their inner selves.”
