Bowling for Coup

Bowling for Coup

By Matt Cotter

Three university students: Matt (ENG Lit), David (anthropology), and Sal (musician) discuss media and culture through the critical lens of not actually doing their research and just kind of winging it.

Bowling for Coup- Ep4: The Final Episode???

Bowling for Coup- Ep4: The Final Episode???

Strange times we're living in. We no longer have any access to the podcasting or editing studios at our university, so this may be farewell to this incarnation of our podcast. We're very sad.

BUT, have no fear. We are here to replace your human contact during your quarantine. It'll feel like you're hanging out with your friends (if you have any).

This one went off the rails, folks. Our initial topic was "media that brings you back" (specifically something that affected you deeply during your formative years of middle school and high school).

We wound up talking about Ariana Grande (there was a photo of her in the public studio), video games, music, punk rock, Scott Pilgrim, and how much we hate Wendy Williams and love Terry Crews.

Watch out for 24:15 when David whips out his Juul in our school studio–cause he's wicked cool like that.

So kick back, feel free to zone in and out. You won't miss anything.

Bowling for Coup Ep3: Who Watches the WATCHMEN?

Bowling for Coup Ep3: Who Watches the WATCHMEN?

Matt goes solo this time, guys. This episode looks at Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' towering masterpiece Watchmen, the graphic novel to end all graphic novels. It examines the book's satires of the superhero genre and 80s culture, and how it uses comics as a medium in a wholly unique way to tell its story. Matt is then joined by special guest Cameron Hawkins (Twitter: @TheCinephileGuy) of Dualshockers to talk about Zack Snyder's film version, the book in general, and a little about the new HBO series. We also detour into Harry Potter and Star Wars for a sec, so enjoy that.  Ozymandias Spoilers: 25:20-26:55 Stuff to look into: A great video serving as a crash course in the novel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJmg0uc3CjY The best Watchmen parody: https://youtu.be/YDDHHrt6l4w Video Essays which tackle the book and its adaptations from various perspectives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfDR3JR3-rI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn2CebyHH6M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5Oth1KUfNU https://youtu.be/6kWt8YhBIro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oltd-Jsi2I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg46bZsdhng https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mXDz2rYeh4  (by the way, this video also proposes the argument that Nite Owl, Rorschach and Ozymandias reflect Batman's personas. EPISODE HIGHLIGHT: South Park Gets Woke

EPISODE HIGHLIGHT: South Park Gets Woke

Matt David and Sal discuss the latest seasons of South Park, which mark a subtle shift in the show's politics from radical centrist to progressive leftism, and what this says about the cultural moment we're in regarding increased awareness and acceptance of progressive politics (spoiler alert: this is a positive thing).

Bowling for Coup- Episode II: Halloween Special

Bowling for Coup- Episode II: Halloween Special

(originally published on Oct 30)  If you're in a state of post-Halloween blues, and aren't ready to let go of spooky season just yet, this is the episode for you. Matt, Sal, and (briefly) David discuss horror films, Stephen King's theory of why people enjoy horror fiction, H.P. Lovecraft being a racist weirdo, Sal's eccentric cousin, Tahoe Tessie, "extreme haunted house" McKamey Manor, and short stories and music to enjoy for Halloween. Excuse the slight crackle in the audio, don't know what happened. Extra Stuff Fun fact I forgot to bring up during the pod: the voice of the killer in "Scream" was provided by Roger L. Jackson, a voice actor also known for voicing Mojo Jojo on "Powerpuff Girls."  And: "Scary Movie" was the original working title for "Scream," ironically. Russ McKamey does charge for his "service": one bag of dog food. And: no one knows if the $20K prize is legit since no one's ever made it through to the end of McKamey Manor.
