Amelia: You know, I think a lot of the times when I'm writing, I'm trying to find idioms and metaphors. And I was writing the song "Seesaw," and I just came across... I thought it was quite a well-known phrase. I just typed in, like, you know, moon phrases, and I came across "Between the Moon and the Milkman," and I was like, I really like that because it can evoke a lot of different things. It can mean physically between that time, but also like that space at nighttime, for me, is quite... I find it really interesting because a lot of the songs were written at nighttime.

My Music Episode 349 - Fran Ashcroft

My Music Episode 349 - Fran Ashcroft

Renowned British producer Fran Ashcroft has announced his forthcoming album 'The Songs That Never Were', to be released on February 23 via Think Like a Key Music. While only his sophomore album as a solo artist, Ashcroft's name stands behind dozens of other albums that have come to grace the music plane over the past few decades. Ahead of this, he presents the lead track 'Waiting For The Britpop Revival', a 2-track offering with a traditional A-side and B-side. Longtime producer for artists big and small, and formerly of British power-pop trailblazers The Monos, Fran Ashcroft has recorded in some of the world's most renowned studios and with some iconic artists, including Damon Albarn (Blur), Abbey Road Studios, Thunderbirds Are Go!, PRT Records and Studios, Spin Jupiter Spin (Dandy Warhols), , Darling Nikkie (Lords of Acid) Big Fish Music in Japan, and Fruits Der Mer Records, to mention a few. A treasure trove of recordings that defies time, Ashcroft describes this album as "a bridge across time" and "a collaboration between myself and me of fifty years ago", made possible by two broken tape recorders and a little bit of AI technology. Here, he ingeniously constructs a sonic viaduct spanning 50 years to allow something novel to take shape amidst the echoes of his past - one where old and new harmonise in a truly innovative yet delightfully vintage experience. "I’ve never made a record quite like this one. Nobody has. it was like building a bridge of time between my present day self and me from 50 years ago. The song I heard in my head at 5 a.m. that morning reminded me of one I’d written many years before, which I was never quite happy with. I thought, you could almost put this new tune right over it. So I dug the old tape out of the archives to see if I was right. And I was - the chords were the same, and it was even in the same key! If I could only remove and replace the vocals on the old mono recording, it would be an entirely new song," says Fran Ashcroft.

Merging her lovable sound with K-pop influence, the result is a bold and fresh palette, providing pure escapism for listeners and exploring the intense angles of love through ten unforgettable new tracks. Clichés touches on our experiences of love, ranging across all aspects: superficial to deep, fleeting to eternal, problematic to easy. https://open.spotify.com/album/7LFAKq... Hailing from Australia, the now London-based pop artist Sharl, is known for spinning stories from the ups and downs of love and life. As a classically trained musician, Sharl infuses her music with captivating melodies, infectious electro pop beats and heartfelt lyrics which reveal a deep core of resilience and authenticity. Sharl manifests the journey of an indie pop princess on the rise. Following the release of her debut album City Lights, Sharl continues on her fearless evolution on the lead up to her second album, Clichés. Sharl explains, “It’s an exploration of the meaning of love: that it can take many forms, which might be seen as clichés, but who are we to judge which aspect of love is better or more meaningful?” Using songwriting as an outlet for her emotions and a form of therapy, Sharl continues, “I wrote the songs reflecting on experiences of love, as ultimately I see love as the universal human truth and experience that endures through the difficulties that life and the world throws at us.” The album includes songs such as “No Other”, a track that feels like falling head over heels into a fairytale world. Through colourful melodies, a throbbing beat and bright brass section, “No Other” packs a punch, with Sharl’s soft yet powerful vocals narrating being completely intoxicated by someone. A total juxtaposition to her previous track “Changed Too Much”, which shows a horror side to love, exploring toxicity, regret and hindsight. Drawing comparisons to Taylor Swift, Sharl’s storytelling lyrics allows for listeners to envision themselves in the stories, immersing themselves in the music and feeling the emotion of the song. The accompanying music video for “No Other” is a nod to the depiction of Disney princesses as an archetype of fairytale love, released just in time for Disney's 100th anniversary this year. Title-track “Clichés” speaks about that butterfly feeling in your stomach in anticipation that things are finally going to happen with someone who there is undeniable chemistry with. “Clichés” showcases a dynamic and strong beat, creating an innovative sound with a defiant mood in the verse raps. Then there are tracks such as “Fallen” which describes the uncontrollable lust and falling deep for someone through an intense rock/blues inspired sound, as well as the moody and dreamy “Find Me” where we hear the songwriter battling with an internal conflict of seeking out someone who can't commit fully, but they can't let go of the situation even though they know it's not good for them. The talented singer-songwriter has seen success having reached the semi-finals of the International Songwriting Competition, performing on the main stage at the Virgin Australia AFL Footy Festival, and multiple film festival awards for her debut music video “I Fell In Love”. As an advocate for Asian representation in the music industry, Sharl hopes to inspire people to be who they want in life and not feel restricted by pressures around them.

My Music Episode 330 - Katie Blount

My Music Episode 330 - Katie Blount

They say it can take a few albums to really write something of quality, but not with Katie’s debut album ‘Dark Water’. Katie Blount has written an album with the skill of a poet and the heart of a musician. With lines like ‘Fingerprint my mind for evidence’ and ‘I’ve been fooled by the weight of a rolling dice that only ever landed in mid-air’. These songs aren’t lighthearted tunes, but ones that draw you into the heart and soul of who we are underneath our disguises. ‘The American Song’ came from an experience she had in America as she travelled by train for three days straight. Someone she sat next to, told her their whole life story as they headed south. The story was full of casualties from a past they had not yet surrendered. Everyone on the train was trying to escape a hurricane and so a story of freedom and escape from the inside and out was born. Talking about ‘The American Song’ Katie said ‘Even though our stories may be different what we feel is the same.’ Then there are her more unusual melodies that twist and bend into unexpected places, melodies like ‘Dark Water’ that convey how someone sees a relationship ending through someone’s quiet distances. A melody so unique it reminds you of no one and is yet strangely familiar, until comparisons seem futile.

Pete Hobbs fronted User, a power trio that also featured future Razorlight star Andy Burrows on drums. Everyone had high hopes for I Can’t Love You Anymore. East West records put them in the studio with The Stone Roses producer Paul Schroeder and they even won a TV talent show performing it. A record deal was arranged, Abbey Road studios was booked and success seemed inevitable. But dramatically.... everything fell through at the last minute. Their manager went to prison and the label folded the day before they were due to go into Abbey Road. Despondent and shell shocked, Pete went back to the drawing board, eventually finding success with The Boy Least Likely To. But his Mum, responding to a “Any requests?” post he put out on instagram, asked him to perform it again. It got him thinking. First he thought it would be a nice thing to do for his Mum and step Dad, it had always been one of their favourites. Then he added it to his live set and started developing and updating it and in the process totally reconnected with the song and who he was when he wrote it. “It’s very strange to go back and inhabit something you created 25 years ago. Much more emotional than I had anticipated. It’s almost impossible not to compare myself now to who I was then. Have I done ok? Have I achieved what I set out to? What would the younger me think of me now? I Can’t Love You Anymore was released on 3rd Nov 2023, Pete now uses the moniker Diving At Dawn.... Graham catches up with him for My Music

My Music Episode 326 - Serena Ittoo

My Music Episode 326 - Serena Ittoo

Serena Ittoo, a singer-songwriter from Enfield, UK, uses her music to explore and express the emotions we all experience in our daily lives. Her emphasis on authenticity highlights the importance of embracing our unique selves, both in her music and in her interactions with others. Her debut single, “Nature Foreseen” is a reflection and ode to anyone who has felt that they are not worthy, good enough or accepted by someone they truly love. Serena shares, “Although they love this person unconditionally, the song faces such vulnerable emotions of what it feels like to not feel accepted/judged over things you can’t control.” The song shows that the protagonist deeply loves this person and would do anything for the person to feel safe, valued and loved purely; however, the song also shows that this isn’t really reciprocated openly and purely the other way around. The other person focuses on what the protagonist can’t control, doesn’t have - this is why they push them away and the protagonist is left feeling very deflated and low-self-worth. Serena worked in collaboration with Grammy award-winning music Producer/Engineer Aamir Yaqub (Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Sia) and Marcus Maschwitz (John Legend, Katy Perry, Years and Years, The 1975) on her up and coming official music video. “Nature Foreseen” marks the start of Serena’s profound journey through the tapestry of human emotions, painting a vivid sonic landscape that resonates with hearts worldwide. Deep and emotive, “Nature Foreseen” emanates an ethereal quality, with passionate, soulful vocals and lyrics packed with imagery, analogies and metaphors. In addition to her musical career, Serena is a Licensed Master NLP Practitioner and Life Coach, working to help others reach their full potential. Working in this field, Serena wanted “Nature Foreseen” to end powerfully in that the protagonist takes back their power and chooses to focus on their own worth and self-love. She explains, “It is so easy to lose ourselves and forget our worth when we love someone deeply, however in situations where they don’t love you with an open heart freely, it can lead you to doubt everything good about yourself. It reminds us that we need to take ownership of loving ourselves and not rely on other people to do this for us.” Her commitment to her craft has opened doors to amazing opportunities, such as writing and performing an original song at Sir Paul McCartney’s childhood home. Serena has also collaborated with renowned songwriters like Grammy winner Gary Nicholson and Grammy nominee Beth Neilson Chapman in Texas. Dive into the world of Serena Ittoo’s music and discover her relatable melodies that connect listeners across language and cultural boundaries. Her songs will inspire you to appreciate your own individuality and recognise the shared experiences that unite us all. #Music #Interviews #Linkedin #podcast

My Music Episode 323 - Richard Evans

My Music Episode 323 - Richard Evans

Manchester-based synthwave artist Richard Evans has released his new retro-futuristic EP 'Dream of the World' via Cold Star Media. Recorded at Cold Star Studios in July 2023, the inspiring title track is about remaining positive even in the darkest times, as reflected in the accompanying video. A British-Irish electronic musician, writer and digital media artist, Evans was previously keyboardist in UK cult band James, with whom he also co-wrote and recorded material. Previous to that, he was also guitarist and songwriter for St. Vitus Dancers. This was no easy feat. Struck with Miller Fisher Syndrome, a rare debilitating auto-immune disorder (a variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome) in 2022, it would require Evans' full recovery, something that is not guaranteed to most people suffering from this ailment. He also had to learn to do everything all over again, including speaking, singing and playing music. But he managed to do exactly that, against the odds. This 3-track EP follows Evans' 2022 debut record 'Sentinel', an electro-pop concept album that touches on micro-plastics, gene editing, stardust, technogenic disasters, human evolution, among other themes, this superb eight-track collection telling the story of humanity at a tipping point and a world trapped in a climate crisis. "'Dream Of The World' is a call to action in the face of an unrelenting climate crisis and, on a personal level, it reflects on a health situation that affected me in late 2022. I was diagnosed with Miller Fisher Syndrome, a rare auto-immune disorder that impacts around one in a million people each year and is a variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. I found parallels between the life-threatening aspects of the climate crisis and a condition which decimated nearly all of my body’s functions," says Richard Evans. #Music #Stories #Illness
