S3E5 with Dele Sosimi

S3E5 with Dele Sosimi

It's St. Patricks day so we thought we would bring you a legend of Afrobeat (after we chat about Irish B-Sides and The Horeslips obviously). Dele Sosimi joined Fela Kuti's band as a teenager and learned the tricks of the trade from the Godfather of Afrobeat and his stickman Tony Allen. Dele spent years learning from the best in the business, playing 8 hour gigs, shuffling through Fela's own private vinyl collection and of course negotiating a route through the difficulties of being a political musician under a brutal regime. Dele rose from keyboard player to band leader of the Egypt 80. After Fela's death Dele found himself in London and built himself an incredible reputation for being leading one of the hottest bands around, bring Afrobeat to a new audience. Still touring and recording with elite musicians from around the world Dele took the time to talk to us about all that he has learned along his turbulent musical journey. An absolutely fascinating interview we know you will enjoy.

Before we get into that though Deb and Eamon discuss 6Music's 20th birthday, an incredibly long box set and what the B-Side means to a music lover.

We strongly recommend you listen to Dele:

S3E3 with Jaguar Skills

This week on What Goes Around we talk to the big cat himself DJ Jaguar Skills. A legend of the UK Hip-Hop scene DJ Jaguar Skills tells his musical story from the bedroom to the biggest festivals, radio shows and record labels. A man of incredible ingenuity and insight Jaguar Skills photocopied his way into journalism, pivoted into DJing by way of a minidisc player and finally became a fully fledged recording artist & label boss on his own terms. Best known for his incredible mixes for the likes of Trevor Nelson, Mista Jam, Colin Murry and his unique remixes for Nervous Records, Lupe Fiasco and many more. You could never say that he took the well worn path and that makes his story unmissable.   We also have a special feature on the Manchester Hip-Hop archive, a brilliant project aiming to document the crucial role Manchester played in the adoption of Hip-Hop in the UK. We talk to the curators about the scene, the key players and how the fashion, graffiti, music and dancing came together to lift up the youth of the Northern Quarter and kick start an age of creativity and optimism. Before all that though Eamon and Deb discuss three incredible documentaries that lay bare the creative process and the pressures of success; The Beatles 8 hour epic 'Get Back', Leonard Cohen's long lost 'Bird on a wire' and the tragic but beautiful story of the Silver Jews. It's a great show so dig in and tell a friend. If you care, share! S3E2 with Simon Raymonde

S3E2 with Simon Raymonde

This week we welcome a genuine legend to the show, Mr. Simon Raymonde from seminal Post-Punk band Cocteau Twins. It would be hard to overstate the influence Cocteau Twins had on the Indie scene, trumpeted by John Peel, coveted by Prince and (let's not underplay this), easily the most nominated artist for a Phonographic Memories slot on @WhatGoesPod EVAH! Bella Union Boss and former Twins member Simon Raymonde pops in to talk about octogenarian frontmen, finding yourself in a band and how his father played a seminal role in English pop music.

Also this week A&E becomes D&E as our Anne, sorry Debs, steps out of her cocoon.

We also discuss the price of music and whether all we really need is trinkets.

God love ya for loving us.

Our Anne ennit....

He has had a number 1 hit with his remix of Elton John's 'Are you ready for love?', he created the all time club classic 'New Jersey Deep' and is currently churning out incredible remixes for Ramrock Records through his 'Northstreet Productions' moniker. Prepare yourself for tales of The Guvnor, personal recovery, love and a never-ending musical obsession.

BUT THATS NOT ALL!

In A&E this week Anne tells us how to keep calm in the public eye. Eamon and Anne exchange Christmas gift ideas for the music lover in your life. Dr. Jennifer Otter Bickerdike talks to Eamon about her book 'You are beautiful and you are alone - The biography of Nico', then Anne chats to fellow Chess Records obsessive Richard M Ganter about his beautiful coffee table tome 'A tribute to the Chess Record Corp'.

S2E14 with Man Parrish

S2E14 with Man Parrish

*HEADSPIN* Yes, yes y'all and we don't stop. This week we explore the roots and fundamentals of Hip-Hop and Electro with the incredible boundary breaking force of nature that is Man Parrish. Given his nickname 'Man' by none other than Andy Warhol Man Parrish has been a part of the New York club scene since the days of Studio 54, he partied with Halston, Bianca Jagger, Madonna and countless others. His groundbreaking musical style gave electro just the jolt it needed to reach the mainstream with his seminal cut 'Hip-Hop/Bee Bop'. He broke into the UK Top 10 with the Hi-Energy ode to the gay club scene 'Male Stripper' reaching Number 4 in 1986. He has composed music for the ballet and been inducted into the Museum of Modern Arts permanent collection. What you really need to know though is that this is one hell of an interview. Prepare to clutch your pearls and pick your jaw off the floor when listening to the incredible stories of Man Parrish.

In keeping with this Hip-Hop theme we interview the incredible DeeJay Random from the scratch collective the Steel Devils and ask him about the actual work involved in becoming a true scratch DJ. Random is an engaging, salt of the earth music lover who has *done the work* so you don't have too. If you have ever wondered what it takes to become a scratch DJ he is here to spill the beans.

Before all that Anne & Eamon celebrate Annes good news as she finally breaks into the A list with a residency at BBC6Music.

This episode contain a lot of bad language and descriptions of a very difficult childhood so please be prepared for some shocking revelations.

An awful lot of great music is talked about this week:

S2E12 with Anne Dudley

Who's afraid of the Art of Noise? Well not us, we loved 'em. So much so that we have invited the one and only Anne Dudley on to the show this week. Anne Dudley is an obscenely talented composer, arranger, producer and performer. She is a fellow of The Royal College of Music, was nominated 3 times for an Ivor Novello Award, she has won two Brit awards, a Grammy and an *Oscar* for her score for the British comedy 'The Full Monty'. In 2014 she was presented with a BASCA Gold Badge for her outstanding contribution to the music industry. And ALL of this was AFTER she helped change the face of electronic music forever through her work with The Art of Noise.

We also celebrate one of the best soul and funk labels around 'Daptone' by talking to Jessica Lipsky author of the definitive new book about the label that brought us Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley and Lee Fields, its called 'It aint retro: Daptone Records and the 21st century soul revolution.'

And of course Anne and Eamon kick it all off by shooting the breeze and ruminating on the long awaited return of the dancefloor!

So strap yourselves in for another tasty slice of pod.

S2E11 with Bill Brewster

Let's get ready to rumble! Prepare for a right old ding dong as Anne and Eamon get all up in each others grills about camera phones at gigs and clubs. It's all a bit of a misunderstanding and a few cuts and bruises will soon mend. One thing they do agree on however is that Questlove is a musical saint and should be knighted and given a commemorative public holiday in recognition for his work in regards to the new documentary 'Summer of Soul - Or when the revolution could not be televised'. There is much gushing and cooing.  Our guest this week is one of the UK's greatest and most influential DJ's, the man behind the best selling books 'Last night a DJ saved my life' and 'How to DJ properly', the original Fabric resident and personal inspiration to DJ Anne Frankenstein, Mr Bill Brewster shares his phonographic memories with us. Bill has been playing music for well over 40 years and has played a crucial role in club culture in and out of the booth.  Listen its a great show so why don't you force a friend to listen to it too? S2E10 with Brian Jackson

S2E10 with Brian Jackson

Well what can we say about this episode other than it contains one of the finest musicians we have ever heard. Brian Jackson has over 50 years experience in the industry and has co-written some of the greatest songs of all time including 'The Bottle' and 'Winter in America' with Gil Scot-Heron. Its a dangerous game meeting your heroes but we are delighted to say that Brian is an absolute gentleman. Brian shares 3 Phonographic Memories with us along with so many fascinating asides. We also take the time to talk to legendary DJ The Mighty Zaf about the overlooked and underrated genre of Go-Go music. Wedged in between Hip-Hop and House Go-Go was once the hottest genre in the world but weirdly it seems to have been forgotten by the masses. Anne and Eamon meanwhile open the show by opening their hearts and discussing that most intimate of subjects, the lovers song. Eamon admits to a particularly awful selection whilst Anne realises she was the only one who even knew what her and her partners song even was.

It's a great show so why not tell someone about it?

And OMG with a couple of exceptions the play list is GO-GO-GOLD this week.

S2E9 WGA with Ana Matronic

This week we welcome a genuine Scissor Sister into the WGA family, Ana Matronic! Ana is a true music lover who has toured the world as a singer and DJ. A former Goth and Industrial fan Ana completed her apprenticeship in the burlesque drag clubs of New York and LA and has plenty of tales to tell. An expert on all things disco she is currently curating an exhibition on design in club culture for the Dundee V&A, DJing on Radio 2 and somehow she still found the time to write a book on robotics! We loved talking to her and hope you enjoy listening back just as much. Before all that though we take a quick trip to A&&E. This week Anne and Eamon discuss a tale of two cities as they both ponder their future and make plans for a new career in a new town (well actually its the same career but I can't resist a Bowie reference). Our guest this week is Ben Ayres from the legendary British Indie band Cornershop. Together with band mate Tajinder Singh, Ben can lay claim to a unique place in musical history as the only band to have a single top both the National Charts and John Peels Festive Fifty with the timeless floor filler 'Brimful of Asha'. Currently celebrating 30 years in the business Ben has seen it all from the giddy heights of the Top Of The Pops studio to the literal factory floor where piles of plastic were pressed into vinyl treasures for music fans around the world. Ben takes the time to share some of his Phonographic Memories with us as well as waxing lyrical about his obsession with the black wax. It is a must for any true vinyl fanatic.  Before that Anne and Eamon discuss music to exercise to and the new 3 part documentary about Madness 'Before we were we'. S2E5 WGA with Zoe Adjonyoh

S2E5 WGA with Zoe Adjonyoh

Our guest this week is award winning cook and writer Zoe Adjonyoh. Best known for her book and franchise 'Zoe's Ghana Kitchen', Zoe has been a judge on Masterchef, appeared on Oprah in the states and once made Anne eat a whole scotch bonnet. Her Irish/Ghanian heritage gave her a wonderfully eclectic musical upbringing and her connection to music is as much a part of her cooking ethos as the ingredients. Zoe tells us all about her Phonographic Memories.

Our new feature Around The World is back and this time we take a long hard look at Ireland's deep rooted fascination with Country and Western music. Why is it that 3000 miles away from the nearest rodeo, Country and Western has found its spiritual home in rural Ireland? Americana singer/songwriter Rob Corcoran puts down his guitar and shares his thoughts on the matter.

Before all that though Anne gears up for a fight in the park and Eamon tries to placate her with Pharoah Sanders, Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra.

S2E4 WGA with Pat Nevin

Series 2 Episode 4 - The Indie Episode!

What Goes Around is all about finding music fans in unusual places and this week, we shoot ... and we score! Our guest is the brilliant writer, presenter and footballing legend Pat Nevin. Pat may be best known as a flying winger for Chelsea and Scotland but he has always been a music fan first and foremost. We are delighted that Pat agreed to share his Phonographic Memories with us, he takes us from the pre punk days right up to the modern day and gives us some priceless anecdotes about meeting and becoming friends with the late great John Peel, his love of DJing and how he never really wanted to be a footballer in the first place. Humble and generous to a fault this one was a joy to record.

In honour of Pat being our guest we decided to christen this the Indie Music episode. David Christian-Bower from Indie stalwarts Comet Gain takes time out to make us believe in 'Indie Music'. It's a celebration of the freaks and geeks that shaped the modern music scene during the 80s.

Before all that, Anne and Eamon discuss the dark art of house hunting for DJs. They also talk canal parties and discuss the house of 'El Diablo'.

Mainly thanks to Pat and David this weeks Spotify playlist is actually really bloody good so stick it on!

S2E2 WGA with Lydia Lunch

S2E2 WGA with Lydia Lunch

This week we have a real Punk legend on the show, Lydia Lunch. Lydia was instrumental in the New York 'No-Wave' music scene of the late 70s, her band Teenage Jesus & the Jerks changed the world in 9 minutes of sonic destruction. Her poetry and forceful personality continues to shock and delight audiences around the world and she also had a hand in one of Eamon's most treasured singles 'Death Valley 69' with Sonic Youth. It is safe to say this is one of our favourite ever interviews, Lydia nails the brief and and shocks and surprises with almost every sentence. Before we meet the 'Queen of Punk' Anne and Eamon discuss the ever increasing lengths of play lists and whether it's ever OK to wear a sweary T-Shirt in the presence of children. After our slightly testy discussion of how to file records in series one we have decided call in the experts in the form of Anne's sister Dr. Beck Grant a fully qualified Archival Scientist. Dr. Beck gives us the lowdown on how to organise a collection correctly and also lends Eamon some much coveted credibility. We really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did making it, please like, subscribe, review or just tell a friend what we do.

As ever we have made a playlist of literally every song and artist mentioned in the podcast, skip past the ropey bits because there is some gold in there! Look it kicks off with Take That but you can blame Anne for that and just skip on if you like.

S2E1 WGA with Rhodri Marsden

Hello pod-friends! We are back, back, back! Series 2 kicks off with the brilliant, funny and talented Rhodri Marsden. As well as being one of the funniest and most charming people on Twitter, Rhodri is the keyboard player in Scritti Politti and a noted author and journalist. Rhodri shares his Phonographic Memories with us and picks some of the most surprising and interesting tunes yet. We also have a new feature called 'Around the World' in which we examine why certain types of music manage to blossom in the most unexpected of places. This week we consider Jazz in Japan with J-Jazz 3 curator Tony Higgins. Tony explains how a genre born in the ghetto's of the USA took root in the far east, it's a fascinating story revealing a rich seam of musical gold. The show kicks off with Anne and Eamon just being excited about being back, discussing New Years resolutions and Britney Spears. Hello, hello ... it's good to be back!

Episode 20 What Goes Around? XMAS SPECIAL

Episode 20 What Goes Around? XMAS SPECIAL

HAPPY XMAS EVERYONE! We bring series one of What Goes Around to an end in fine style with a BUMPER Christmas cracker of a show featuring some familiar voices from our first year in the pod-o-sphere! What a show it is too, like many a Christmas we start off with a quick trip to A&E. Anne and Eamon reminisce about their experiences over the first 20 episodes and the amazing guests they have had on, then theres an exchange of gifts and warm glow of seasonal joy. From there we welcome a cavalcade of Christmas guests including M Z Harrison who pops in to wish us well and share her 'Solitary.Christmas' project with us. The wonderful Jo Wallace of Ramrock Records is back as our resident Agony Aunt, sharing her wisdom and bearing her soul to listeners in desperate need of advice. The irrepressible Wrongtom returns to help us choose our official What Goes Around Christmas theme. We have an alternative Queens speech from our very own Queen, Karen Arthur. And finally Bibi Lynch brings the show to a climax by offering Anne and Eamon the chance to share their own Phonographic Memories with you at last.

We would like to say thank you to each and every listener who helped the show grow so fast this year and we would also like to offer our eternal gratitude to our fabulous roll call of guests: Wrongtom, M Z Harrison, Tim Plester, Hannah Cartwright, Pete Rogers, Marcus Brigstocke, Bibi Lynch, Karen Arthur, Tom Ravenscroft, Miles Chapman, Soweto Kinch, Kieron J Walsh, Jo Wallace, Wendy Erskine, Prof. Sophie Scott, Andy Dawson, Labi Siffre,  Craig Charles & Malik Al Nasir.

Episode 19 What Goes Around? featuring Malik Al Nasir

Episode 19 What Goes Around? featuring Malik Al Nasir

Here we are with episode 19 fresh from celebrating our first number 1 in the Mauritius podcast charts. Fame won't change us. Now any friend of Gil Scott Heron is a friend of ours and our guest this week literally had his life saved by the kindness of Gil. Writer, historian, musician and mentee of the great Gil Scott Heron Malik Al Nasir has a unique and fascinating musical story to tell. Coming from the depths of destitution, illiterate and homeless in the heart of riot torn Toxteth Malik turned his life around after a chance meeting with the American soul legend. This is a story you simply must hear.

This is very much a Jazz themed episode and the brilliant Jazz writer Sammy Stein dares to make us believe in the musical juggernaught that is 'Free Jazz'. Hold onto you hats! We start however with Anne & Eamon drilling down into Drill music. After watching the fascinating BBC3 documentary 'Defending Digga D' the tricky question of whether the police should be allowed to censor an artists lyrics is raised. Then on a lighter note Anne proudly rocks a tracksuit and shares her lockdown style tips, Eamon watches and learns.

Here is a link to the DIgga D documentary: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p08xkspf/defending-digga-d Here is the clip of Drillminister attempting to drink a glass of water whilst wearing a balaclava on Newsnight - apologies it links to the Daily Mail. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-1879168/Man-forgets-hes-wearing-balaclava-takes-sip-water.html

I mention my blog for My Band T-Shirt so here is a link to the story of my Goth years:

Here is a link to Malik Al Nasir's fascinating search for his slave roots... its quite the story, read with a cuppa: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/3k9u8lh178/Searching_for_my_slave_roots

Our playlist this week is a challenging but often rewarding and occasionally infuriating journey from hardcore drill to mellow rare groove via the badlands of free jazz. Try not to pop a cap in anyones ass or indeed throttle a saxophone.

Episode 18 What Goes Around? featuring Craig Charles

Episode 18 What Goes Around? featuring Craig Charles

This week we are delighted to welcome the one and only Craig Charles to the Podcast! We ask Craig about his early days as a 'Punk Poet' in Liverpool, his breakthrough role in Red Dwarf and on through to him starring in the nations favourite Soap Opera; Coronation Street. We also touch on him presenting The Gadget Show and of course his residency as BBC 6 Music's longest serving DJ. Craig is both generous and funny in this lively interview. Anne and Eamon also discuss the very human notion of trying to bring order to the universe through filing records and raise an eyebrow at eternal naivety of musicians when it comes to trusting the man.  During the course of this episode Anne drops the C-Bomb, Eamon denigrates the soundtrack enthusiast and Anne 'jokes' that electro pop pioneers OMD might be dismissed. We would like to point out that we are both very sorry about all of this please don't @ us. Actually DO @ us because we would love to hear you put us in our place. The playlist is full of great tunes this week! Episode 17 What Goes Around? featuring Labi Siffre

Episode 17 What Goes Around? featuring Labi Siffre

Episode 17 is a real thinker. This week we wrestle with the concept of content you are no longer content with. In the age of cancel culture can we really consign all that art into the dustbin just because the people who made it simply weren't the people we thought they were? And what about when we, the listeners change? If something once rocked your world but now seems hideously out of step with your moral code, should it be discarded or does it hold an important reminder of who you once were and actually signpost how you became who you are? Certainly our guest, award winning songwriter, activist and writer Labi Siffre has a few choice things to say on the subject. Labi shares his Phonographic Memories with us and speaks with true passion and wisdom about art, depression and the human condition. With over 50 years in show business Labi is better placed than most to know what makes a song timeless. He has written worldwide smash hits like 'It must be love' and 'Something inside so strong' and his music has been sampled by Wu Tang Clan, Eminem, Jay Z, Mark Ronson and countless others.

This weeks special feature is Make Me Believe, Dr Lauren Redhead tempts us into the rarefied world of modern classical composition. A genre known for its cerebral, challenging and uncompromising sound. But what exactly is modern classical music? And is it even a genre at all?

One thing is for sure - you will come out of this episode with plenty of food for thought. Please Like, share and show you care as we take you off to podland.

As mentioned in our discussion on music that makes you feel uncomfortable, here is a clip of Glen Danzig inexplicably going through his occult library in the dead of night and talking about all the scary books he pretends to read. There are many questions to be asked about this clip but the chief one must surely be 'Why is there a library of the occult next to a swimming pool?'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RERGlWWoIvA&t=64s

As far as the music goes this weeks playlist is truly out there! We veer wildly from Madness to the Misfits, from Shoenburg to Siffre. There are several challenging slabs of modern classical composition and a few tracks of questionable taste and decency. We certainly do not condone a lot of this stuff but given the course our conversations took it would be amiss of us to censor any of it. You have been warned.

YouTube version (with all the gory details and a scant regard for copyright infringement):

Only the most serious musical adventurers are going to clamber through every track but as always there is gold in them there hills.

Episode 16 What Goes Around? featuring Andy Dawson

Episode 16 What Goes Around? featuring Andy Dawson

Amazingly we have reached Episode 16 and oh boy is it a beauty so please share the links on social media and tell your friends! This week we are delighted to have writer, comic and podcast hero Andy Dawson on the show. Andy has been making people laugh for decades now and regularly tops the podcast comedy charts alongside Bob Mortimer with the excellent Athletico Mince podcast. Andy also hosts Top Flight Time Machine with Talk Radio's Sam Delany.  Anne & Eamon discuss the hit and miss world of music biopics after Eamon accidentally watched the trailer for the new (unofficial) Bowie film 'Stardust' (or 'Sawdust' as @CitizenHelene suggested). Anne then goes into treacherous waters as she suggests that maybe we might be better off without all these records cluttering up the place. Sacrilege really. Eamon takes a road trip down to the South West of the country to see how some of Bristol's finest record shops have been doing during the age of Covid 19. It turns into an unexpectedly upbeat affair where established shops with deep roots and some new green shoots of growth are seen to be thriving in this musical city. This weeks playlist is really good even if Kevin Keegan makes an appearance: Spotify version https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Zhwa57z2fQGAIqlYCOWfZ YouTube version https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPPl5xM2fbUqCJ3pEaKP3pHqEWBkjysi1 Here is a link to the Stardust Trailer (We advise you watch with a wooden spoon clenched in your teeth) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U82heDabn5k Here is a link to an article about Bill Brewster dumping his record collection (Eamon can't even read it through his fingers) https://mixmag.net/feature/bill-brewster-why-i-sold-my-13-000-strong-record-collection Here are some links to the brilliant record shops we visited in Bristol: https://idlehandsbristol.com/  https://www.instagram.com/idlehandsbristol Here is a little film about Strange Brew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SAbABsWpBM And a link to the Record Shop Planet Caravan https://www.discogs.com/seller/PlanetCaravan99/profile The Centre For Better Grooves https://www.discogs.com/user/CFBGBristol If you havent already heard Athletico Mince then you simply must! https://athleticomince.com/ Top Flight Time Machine is also well worth a listen - especially the Roy Keane episodes! https://tftimemachine.com/ CONTACT US: WHATGOESPOD@GMAIL.COM Twitter - @WHATGOESPOD Instagram - @WHATGOESPOD BIG UP THE LIKERS RTERS SHARERS

Episode 14 What Goes Around? featuring Wendy Erskine

Episode 14 What Goes Around? featuring Wendy Erskine

This week we wax lyrical about lyrics. Do lyrics matter? Can you ignore a bad lyric and still enjoy the tune? Anne and Eamon are not so sure. We also have a plague rave update and learn how the Sheffield hardcore massive don't take kindly to day trippers. This weeks feature is Let's Work! Anne calls up an old friend to talk about Bandcamp. Since the beginning of Lockdown Bandcamp have achieved almost saintly status through their continued support for independent artists so we thought we would ask Aly Gillani, label representative for Bandcamp Europe, exactly who they are, what they do, and why it matters. Not only that but we got three tip-top recommendations from Aly who also runs First Word Records and DJ's on Worldwide FM. Finally our guest is Northern Irish author Wendy Erskine. Wendy is a real music lover and what with her latest book 'Satan is real' being published by none other than Rough Trade she has an affinity with music both in her writing and in her life.

Our Spotify playlist is available for those of you keen to know more about every single song we mention.

We were very pleased that Steve from Sheffield contacted the show about the rebirth of the illegal raves and how the story up north differs slightly from the plague raves down south. He wrote the following:

"You'll be pleased to know that Illegal raves are very much still a thing up here, (normally) happening each weekend somewhere in a remote rural location or the occasional warehouse. Free Parties are well attended with good people (always a few knobheads in my experience, this is England after all). The cops sometimes show up but the rules are "Don't let anyone hurt themselves, tidy your rubbish and put your fires out". I've never been to one where we had to pay to get in.

Around the summer solstice, there was a rumour of one happening in Sheffield, when the local soundsystem crews found out that it was out-of-towners, they mobilised and blocked off all the usual Free Party Spots, making sure the chancers didn't put on a party that was going to be another shit show (like Manchester).

It even made the local rag!"

Episode 13 What Goes Around? featuring Jo Wallace

Episode 13 What Goes Around? featuring Jo Wallace

It all kicks off this week as Anne and Eamon go toe to toe on Brit-Pop, Anne's heard one too many middle aged DJs scoff at her childhood. Meanwhile Eamon briefly sees the light at the end of the lockdown tunnel and tempts Anne out to talk directly to the pandemic party people.

Our guest this week is the fabulous Jo Wallace, Queen of London's Northern Soul scene with 44 years of experience in the music industry from shop floor to CEO of @RamrockRecords one of the most vibrant labels around. Jo generously shares her wisdom, enthusiasm and experience with us. Mates this is a good one!

Episode 12 What Goes Around? featuring Kieron J. Walsh

Episode 12 What Goes Around? featuring Kieron J. Walsh

Well we must stop meeting like this. Podcast 12! This week Anne of all people starts banging on about football songs. Eamon weeps at the graveside of the music press. Derek Anthony Williams of the Jan Doyle Band makes us believe in Gothic music and our special guest is award winning director and producer Kieron J. Walsh whose credits include 'Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami' and cult 90s series 'A young persons guide to being a rock and roll star' which featured a cameo from Noel Gallagher no less. Kieron takes us from his Dansette to the Disco Bar.

WARNING: This weeks playlist may contain football, we are so sorry about that, luckily for Spotify users the very worst of the songs mentioned were only available on Youtube. Once again our disclaimer; it is solely based on the things alluded to in the show.

Episode 11 What Goes Around? featuring Soweto Kinch

Episode 11 What Goes Around? featuring Soweto Kinch

This week Anne and Eamon urge you to join them as they run away to pod land. Anne (a tattooed lady) asks Eamon (a man of virgin skin) whether he ever wanted to engrave a band name on his face. Then it's all jazz-funk, punk & junk as Eamon indulges in his favourite pass time of watching music documentaries and drinking red wine. This week also see's the return of 'Let's Work' our semi-regular feature about when the world of work crashes into the world of music. This week artist John Karborn tells us about his 'Hand to hand' dub plate project and how it led to a desperate scramble to cut the last 10 inch dub-plates in the world. Our guest is a man Eamon has vicariously had breakfast with many times, UK Jazz legend, creative catalyst and former X-Factor Big Band member Soweto Kinch. Soweto selects three moments in his life when the music meant everything.

If you like the sound of John Karborn's 'Hand to hand' dub plate project then you can listen to clips and put in a bid or two at his website:

This weeks playlist opener can be blamed on Anne, she mentioned the eternal request for The Killers and thats how the WGA playlist works, it is solely based on the things alluded to in the show.

Episode 6 What Goes Around? featuring Marcus Brigstocke

Welcome to Episode 6! We think this is the best show so far and really hope you agree. This was the first episode we recorded in lockdown and so we start off reeling in shock as we broadcast from our respective homes under a duvet in extremely hot weather. We talk about the brilliant Beastie Boys documentary and one of their rather sleazy hangers on, we ask a genuine professor of music what the point of Noise music is and we welcome actor, comedian and Jazz enthusiast Marcus Brigstocke in to share his Phonographic Memories - and this is a beautiful interview. Please tell your friends, subscribe and all that good stuff - you know you want to.

Our Spotify playlist is based solely on what we happen to mention during the show, it is not 'curated' as such.

WARNING! Watch out for your hearing - some of the 'noise' pieces are extremely loud! We have thoughtfully put these tracks at the end of the Playlist, we strongly suggest you lower the volume before Merzbow breaks you brain into tiny pieces. We are not kidding.

Episode 5 What Goes Around? featuring Pete Rogers

Episode 5 What Goes Around? featuring Pete Rogers

This weeks episode was recorded over the xmas period when the world was quite a different place. This week we bemoan the downfall of the CD/DVD as a quick stocking filler. We also ask the listeners for their choice of song to soundtrack the end of the world. Anne asks the big questions about Lobsters and eternal life without even considering that this is a music podcast and not really concerned with the keys to eternal life. We review the magnificent oral history of sound system culture 'Bass, Mids, Tops' by Joe Muggs and Brian David Stevens. The man with the phonographic memory this week is Pete Rogers one half of Drum & Bass legends Technimatic. Their first album 'Desire Paths' won Drum & Bass album of the year in both Mixmag and the National Drum & Bass Awards. They have since gone on to tour the world with their unique take on the genre.    Our Spotify playlist is based solely on what we happen to mention during the show, it is not 'curated' as such.  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4MDkc1Cysov2cd8ydL4cbn?si=ZgQJG6AQREOaVlWmHnXpHg  There is also a YouTube version that is well worth a visit   https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPPl5xM2fbUot0IzuXFf4U37JOzUI-eEg Please do all the liking, subscribing and review writing you can (especially on Apple podcasts), it will help the show tremendously. Episode 4 What Goes Around? featuring Hannah Cartwright

This week Anne & Eamon talk about the golden age of MTV before it caught the cribs. They spit bars about beef and discuss the ethics of dissing your mum. Anne reveals the uncomfortable truth about being comfortable at a music festival (remember those?). Our special guest is the delightful Hannah Cartwright from gothic electronica trio Snow Ghosts. Hannah stops by to tell us what it's like living in a castle and shares her Phonographic Memories. She also becomes the first guest to sing their selection - It is a gorgeous moment!  Please share the episode around on Social Media as much as you can, the more people we can get listening the better it will be.
