What Goes Around?

This week we have a giant of UK soul, the honey toned musical master Omar. Best known for his smash hit 'There's nothing like this' Omar has grown into a mainstay of the UK scene working with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Paul Weller and many others over his glittering 35 year career. Omar shares his musical influences, recalls sending Stevie to sleep and how he found inspiration in his family's record collection. 

We also welcome author and journalist Eamonn Forde to the show. Eamonn has just written a fascinating book 'Leaving the building: The lucrative afterlife of music estates', in which he investigates how the dearly departed artists can continue to rake in the coins long after they have shuffled off this mortal coil. It is a fascinating chat which is guaranteed to raise an eyebrow or two.

Before all that though your hosts discuss the best time to play a set and how to handle the pressure of expectation. Eamon also reveals his new hobby.

*HEADSPIN* Yes, yes y'all and we don't stop. This week we explore the roots and fundamentals of Hip-Hop and Electro with the incredible boundary breaking force of nature that is Man Parrish. Given his nickname 'Man' by none other than Andy Warhol Man Parrish has been a part of the New York club scene since the days of Studio 54, he partied with Halston, Bianca Jagger, Madonna and countless others. His groundbreaking musical style gave electro just the jolt it needed to reach the mainstream with his seminal cut 'Hip-Hop/Bee Bop'. He broke into the UK Top 10 with the Hi-Energy ode to the gay club scene 'Male Stripper' reaching Number 4 in 1986. He has composed music for the ballet and been inducted into the Museum of Modern Arts permanent collection. What you really need to know though is that this is one hell of an interview. Prepare to clutch your pearls and pick your jaw off the floor when listening to the incredible stories of Man Parrish.

In keeping with this Hip-Hop theme we interview the incredible DeeJay Random from the scratch collective the Steel Devils and ask him about the actual work involved in becoming a true scratch DJ. Random is an engaging, salt of the earth music lover who has *done the work* so you don't have too. If you have ever wondered what it takes to become a scratch DJ he is here to spill the beans.

Before all that Anne & Eamon celebrate Annes good news as she finally breaks into the A list with a residency at BBC6Music.

Who's afraid of the Art of Noise? Well not us, we loved 'em. So much so that we have invited the one and only Anne Dudley on to the show this week. Anne Dudley is an obscenely talented composer, arranger, producer and performer. She is a fellow of The Royal College of Music, was nominated 3 times for an Ivor Novello Award, she has won two Brit awards, a Grammy and an *Oscar* for her score for the British comedy 'The Full Monty'. In 2014 she was presented with a BASCA Gold Badge for her outstanding contribution to the music industry. And ALL of this was AFTER she helped change the face of electronic music forever through her work with The Art of Noise. 

We also celebrate one of the best soul and funk labels around 'Daptone' by talking to Jessica Lipsky author of the definitive new book about the label that brought us Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley and Lee Fields, its called 'It aint retro: Daptone Records and the 21st century soul revolution.' 

And of course Anne and Eamon kick it all off by shooting the breeze and ruminating on the long awaited return of the dancefloor!

Well what can we say about this episode other than it contains one of the finest musicians we have ever heard. Brian Jackson has over 50 years experience in the industry and has co-written some of the greatest songs of all time including 'The Bottle' and 'Winter in America' with Gil Scot-Heron. Its a dangerous game meeting your heroes but we are delighted to say that Brian is an absolute gentleman. Brian shares 3 Phonographic Memories with us along with so many fascinating asides. We also take the time to talk to legendary DJ The Mighty Zaf about the overlooked and underrated genre of Go-Go music. Wedged in between Hip-Hop and House Go-Go was once the hottest genre in the world but weirdly it seems to have been forgotten by the masses. Anne and Eamon meanwhile open the show by opening their hearts and discussing that most intimate of subjects, the lovers song. Eamon admits to a particularly awful selection whilst Anne realises she was the only one who even knew what her and her partners song even was.

This week Anne and Eamon go for a good old fashioned dig in a real live record store. We discover what is important about a record shop, go shoulder to shoulder in the disco section and discuss Record Store Day now that it's a fixture.

Our guest is the unbelievably talented singer, songwriter, author and actress Adele Bertie. Founder member of The Bloods, singer and songwriter who has written and recorded with The Contortions, The Pointer Sisters, Thomas Dolby and Scritti Politti to name but a few. She is also an accomplished writer with a number of books under her name including the autobiographical 'Peter and the Wolves' and music biography 'Why Labelle Matters'. She is a wise woman speaking very honestly.

This week we are delighted to have a genuinely funny person sharing her phonographic memories with us, writer and comedian Jo Caulfield. Jo is a seasoned stand up comedian and has written for and appeared on Graham Norton, Have I got news for you, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, Mock the week, Argumental and her own critically acclaimed Radio 4 series It's that Jo Caulfield again. She is also a music person and that shines out of her in this interview.

We also celebrate the resurgence of Gary Numan and saviour the hope it offers us late developers. Anne meanwhile has only discovered a whole new genre of music thanks to the Netflix documentary 'Bathtubs over broadway". Honestly needs to be heard to be believed.

Our guest this week is award winning cook and writer Zoe Adjonyoh. Best known for her book and franchise 'Zoe's Ghana Kitchen', Zoe has been a judge on Masterchef, appeared on Oprah in the states and once made Anne eat a whole scotch bonnet. Her Irish/Ghanian heritage gave her a wonderfully eclectic musical upbringing and her connection to music is as much a part of her cooking ethos as the ingredients. Zoe tells us all about her Phonographic Memories. 

Our new feature Around The World is back and this time we take a long hard look at Ireland's deep rooted fascination with Country and Western music. Why is it that 3000 miles away from the nearest rodeo, Country and Western has found its spiritual home in rural Ireland? Americana singer/songwriter Rob Corcoran puts down his guitar and shares his thoughts on the matter.

Before all that though Anne gears up for a fight in the park and Eamon tries to placate her with Pharoah Sanders, Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Series 2 Episode 4 - The Indie Episode!

What Goes Around is all about finding music fans in unusual places and this week, we shoot ... and we score! Our guest is the brilliant writer, presenter and footballing legend Pat Nevin. Pat may be best known as a flying winger for Chelsea and Scotland but he has always been a music fan first and foremost. We are delighted that Pat agreed to share his Phonographic Memories with us, he takes us from the pre punk days right up to the modern day and gives us some priceless anecdotes about meeting and becoming friends with the late great John Peel, his love of DJing and how he never really wanted to be a footballer in the first place. Humble and generous to a fault this one was a joy to record.

In honour of Pat being our guest we decided to christen this the Indie Music episode. David Christian-Bower from Indie stalwarts Comet Gain takes time out to make us believe in 'Indie Music'. It's a celebration of the freaks and geeks that shaped the modern music scene during the 80s. 

Before all that, Anne and Eamon discuss the dark art of house hunting for DJs. They also talk canal parties and discuss the house of 'El Diablo'.

Hello again! This week its all Smash Hits and sex tips from Just Seventeen as legendary music journalist David Hepworth joins us. David presented The Old Grey Whistle Test, hosted Live Aid, edIted Smash Hits, Mojo, Q Magazine and wrote for the NME and Melody Maker. He is therefore responsible for 75% of everything we know. David shares his Phonographic Memories with us and we couldn't be happier about it. Before that though a trip to A&E where Anne demands Eamon watches more movies if he wants to continue to be her friend. Eamon tries to look on the bright side as science wins, nature returns and gigs resume. Anne then has another bone to pick about Eamon transmitting ear worms and asks how to rid yourself of an unwanted mental soundtrack.

This week we have a real Punk legend on the show, Lydia Lunch. Lydia was instrumental in the New York 'No-Wave' music scene of the late 70s, her band Teenage Jesus & the Jerks changed the world in 9 minutes of sonic destruction. Her poetry and forceful personality continues to shock and delight audiences around the world and she also had a hand in one of Eamon's most treasured singles 'Death Valley 69' with Sonic Youth. It is safe to say this is one of our favourite ever interviews, Lydia nails the brief and and shocks and surprises with almost every sentence. Before we meet the 'Queen of Punk' Anne and Eamon discuss the ever increasing lengths of play lists and whether it's ever OK to wear a sweary T-Shirt in the presence of children. After our slightly testy discussion of how to file records in series one we have decided call in the experts in the form of Anne's sister Dr. Beck Grant a fully qualified Archival Scientist. Dr. Beck gives us the lowdown on how to organise a collection correctly and also lends Eamon some much coveted credibility. Wendy is a real music lover and what with her latest book 'Satan is real' being published by none other than Rough Trade she has an affinity with music both in her writing and in her life.

We were very pleased that Steve from Sheffield contacted the show about the rebirth of the illegal raves and how the story up north differs slightly from the plague raves down south. He wrote the following:

"You'll be pleased to know that Illegal raves are very much still a thing up here, (normally) happening each weekend somewhere in a remote rural location or the occasional warehouse. Free Parties are well attended with good people (always a few knobheads in my experience, this is England after all). The cops sometimes show up but the rules are "Don't let anyone hurt themselves, tidy your rubbish and put your fires out". I've never been to one where we had to pay to get in.

Around the summer solstice, there was a rumour of one happening in Sheffield, when the local soundsystem crews found out that it was out-of-towners, they mobilised and blocked off all the usual Free Party Spots, making sure the chancers didn't put on a party that was going to be another shit show (like Manchester).

It even made the local rag!"

This week artist John Karborn tells us about his 'Hand to hand' dub plate project and how it led to a desperate scramble to cut the last 10 inch dub-plates in the world. Our guest is a man Eamon has vicariously had breakfast with many times, UK Jazz legend, creative catalyst and former X-Factor Big Band member Soweto Kinch. Soweto selects three moments in his life when the music meant everything.

This week we talk about the musical deaths you just cant get over. What happens after death when the decisions are made by 'The Estate of...' rather than the 'Artist formerly known as...' and we follow the Police Helicopters over Annes house and discuss the possible reboot of the Rave Scene amid a sea of empty balloons and silver canisters. Our special guest is Writer, Actor and Comedian Miles Chapman who is best known for his brilliant  Channel 4 series 'Lee and Dean' and his work alongside Ricky Gervais in 'David Brent Life on the Road'. Miles tells us about Brixton in the 80s, finding an alternative world in the company of John Peel and then walks into a right old dust up with our Anne. Lines were drawn, scores were settled and music was eventually declared the winner.

He is also a man that has been known to strap bells to his body and take a pigs bladder to the face. Tim takes us on a search for tribal identity and it all gets a bit sentimental about the time when Eamon wore the tightest trousers he had ever seen.

Welcome to the very first episode of What goes around? with Anne Frankenstein and Eamon Murtagh.
