With course selection season in full swing, students are faced with the task of choosing a path that's right for them. Our secondary schools offer a plethora of fantastic courses and programs designed to help students explore their interests, develop valuable skills, and even earn accreditation and post-secondary credits.


Secondary school is the perfect time for students to expand their horizons, discover new passions, and experiment with different fields. That's why we've recently launched a series of pages to help students explore courses and programs tailored to their interests. Tamil Heritage Month

The York Region District School Board recently commemorated Tamil Heritage Month. In this special episode, Initha Subramaniam, Vice Principal at Legacy Public School, led the discussion, shedding light on the origins of Educators for Tamil Student Success (ETSS). Formed in 2009 amidst the aftermath of the Sri Lankan conflict, ETSS emerged as a beacon of support for Tamil students grappling with the traumas of war. ETSS has grown into a dynamic community of advocates within the YRDSB.

Over the years, ETSS has organized a plethora of initiatives, including the Uukkamathu Kaividale Awards, which celebrates Tamil student achievements across various schools in the York Region. ETSS fosters community engagement through workshops, events, and collaborations with culturally responsive partners. Their efforts extend beyond the classroom, as they actively work with senior leadership and diverse departments to co-create supportive frameworks for Tamil students and staff alike. Integral to their mission is the celebration of Tamil Heritage Month, a testament to their grassroots activism in advocating for its recognition at the provincial level.

As the discussion unfolds, panelists further delve into their experiences and contributions, exemplifying the spirit of unity and empowerment ingrained in the Tamil Heritage Month celebrations.

In today's episode, we are focusing on a significant milestone in a family's life: starting kindergarten in York Region District School Board. Our aim at YRDSB is to provide warm, engaging, and welcoming kindergarten programs that build upon the foundations for learning set in homes and communities.

Lead by Heather Young (Principal of Early Years) and joined by three special guests: Ashley LeBlanc (Curriculum Coordinator, Early Years & Kindergarten Literacy), Parisa Faroodi (Kindergarten Teacher, Rosedale Heights Public School) and Hayley Brunswick (Designated Eerly Childhood Educator, Rosedale Heights Public School).

Together, they explore the roles of educators in Ontario kindergarten classrooms, emphasizing the collaboration between the designated early childhood educator and the Ontario certified teacher.

Our guests highlight the importance of relationships in kindergarten, not just among students but also between educators, families, and the wider community. They emphasize the joyful and playful learning experiences that characterize the kindergarten program, showcasing how play-based learning is intentionally integrated into the curriculum, and provide so much more information that parents might be wondering ahead of sending their little ones to kindergarten.

Standing in the Doorway: Lived Histories & Experiences of the Chinese Community

In today’s episode we are talking about the upcoming exhibit, Standing in the Doorway: Lived Histories & Experiences of the Chinese Community, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

This exhibit is a collection of personal stories and artifacts that shed light on the experiences of Chinese immigrants in Canada during the early 1900s. This exhibit serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive society. The YRDSB is partnering with Markham Museum to provide an opportunity for students, families, and educators to learn about this important part of Canadian history and engage in meaningful conversations about identity, diversity, and equity.
