Blake Hanna is a 2016 graduate of Covington Catholic and a 2021 graduate of The University of Cincinnati.  Blake is a record-holding swimmer for the Bearcats, a participant of the 2021 NCAA Swimming Championships and just recently returned from Omaha where he competed in both waves of the USA Olympic trails for the 200 meter backstroke, where he finished 13th nationally.  

However, Blake's path to the Bearcat competition team wasn't storybook, but the ending is.  He worked his way from the club team to earn his spot on the university team and the rest is history.  This is a story about dedication, perseverance and having the will to do what the other guy won't in order to achieve your dreams.

On October 19th, 1971, Cheryll Spegal disappeared on her 10th birthday.  Her body was found two weeks later and the case was never solved.  Beth Rowland and Bridget Meyer have spent the last two years investigating Cheryll's murder in the hope to one day bring closure to this case and to her surviving family members.  While this is a heartbreaking story, Beth & Bridget's journey into this case is fascinating.

While rumors and differing information surround the winter and spring sports seasons, we thought it would be fun to bring on Aaron Stamm, Tim Sullivan and Kevin Gray. Aaron is the current 9th region representative to the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches and the girls basketball coach at Ludlow. Tim is a former president of the KABC and the boys basketball coach at Cooper. Kevin Gray is a member of the Kentucky Baseball Coaches Association and also the baseball coach at Beechwood.

This episode is a roundtable discussion of the current information the coaches association’s have sent to the KHSAA ahead of the 12/10 Board of Control meeting, which everyone presumes will again layout a plan to restart winter sports and also the schedule for spring sports. We also talk through the current social media rumors surrounding winter and spring sports.  The opinion’s in this episode are our own.

Bishop Brossart’s new basketball coach, Scott Code, is no stranger to the Mustang basketball program.  Arriving in 2004, Scott spent three seasons as the JV Coach prior to being named the head coach at Campbell County High School, where he spent three seasons.  After leaving Campbell County, he spent the 2010-2011 season at Thomas More College before returning to Bishop Brossart, where he has been since.  Coach Code began his coaching career at Tichenor, then spent five years at Highlands, followed by two seasons at Dixie Heights before arriving to coach for the Mustangs.

The Playoffs are here...finally!  After a brief hiatus, it was good to once again watch, and talk, high school football.  The Dixie/Simon Kenton rivalry lived up to its billing and ended in a thriller.  CovCath and Walton won big.  Lloyd and Highlands both advance in games that got really tight.  Ludlow moves on with the help of a monster night from Braxton Newborn and Holmes' fantastic season ends.

Also, Frisch's pumpkin pie is the GOAT of takeout pies.  Enjoy some with your family this Thanksgiving.

The regular season has ended and the postseason push begins. With only six games involving local teams being played on Friday, we get the opportunity to take a hard look at each of those matchups, as well as a look ahead to the first round of the playoffs, which have now been delayed one week.

CovCath’s winning streak ends in Lexington, but Holmes and Ryle continue their own streak. Highlands got back to winning ways in Alexandria and Boone County ends their season with a win at Walton-Verona. We interview Boone County football coach, Bryson Warner, who talked about the importance of going into the offseason with a win, momentum and excitement.

You already know that Joe Danneman doesn’t like pineapple on pizza, but he also doesn’t like the playoff format. Shocker.

Highlands basketball coach, Kevin Listerman, who was a standout player at Covington Catholic and Northern Kentucky University prior to getting into coaching.  Kevin was a four-year starter for Ken Shields at NKU, played in four NCAA tournaments, two national title games, earned All-GLVC academic honors in each of the years he played and was also an All-GLVC player in 1997.  Kevin also held head coaching positions at Bellevue (02-03) and Boone County (03-04), where he led the Rebels to the 2004 9th Region Final.  Coach Listerman is entering his 8th season at Highlands, where his Bluebirds are coming off a 9th Region Finals appearance in 2020.

As the regular season nears its end, team identities are emerging. CovCath & Newcath remain the lone unbeaten’s in NKY. Ryle, Holmes and Beechwood secure 1 seeds and move in the updated RPI standings. Cooper went to Fort Thomas and beat the Bluebirds; Ludlow’s Braxton Newborn continues to lead the way for Ludlow; Dixie rebounds to defeat Campbell at home and Lloyd defeated Holy Cross in another close 2A seed game.

We interview Dixie’s Dave Brossart and Ludlow’s Greg Taphouse, whose teams have overcome early losses to secure home playoff games on November 13th.

Simon Kenton Girls Basketball Coach, Jeff Stowers, has been at the helm of the Pioneer basketball program since 2002.  He spent 7 years (1993-2000) at Seven Hills in Cincinnati coaching the boys program prior to his long and successful career in Independence.  He has amassed over 500 career wins, won FIVE 8th Region titles and TEN district championships.  After his Hall of Fame career at the then Northern Kentucky State College (NKU), he went on to play professionally overseas, where he used basketball to see the world.  Jeff is a family man, who used to be tough, but now has 11 grandchildren who've made him a softy.  A proven winner, he still enjoys teaching the game that brought a unique opportunity to his life.

With three weeks to go the playoff picture begins to take shape.  Newcath, Brossart, Walton, Holmes and CovCath have wrapped up their district and home playoff games.  The remaining districts will be decided in Week 7.  Ryle had a monster win at home and we talk to Coach Engler about the game and his team.  Scott got their first win and keep their playoff hopes alive.  Newport remains unbeaten in 2A, setting up a showdown with Beechwood for the 1 seed in their district.  We also talk with Holmes football coach, Ben Nevels, about his team and the run they've been on.  Lots of coverage in this edition, including the updated RPI standings.

In the week 6 edition of the Northern Kentucky Football Show, teams have begun to separate from the pack in their district. Dixie defeats Simon Kenton in a massive 6A showdown; Beechwood and Newport move ahead in 2A; Newcath and Dayton remain unbeaten leading into their matchup; Highlands remains undefeated in 5A as they prepare to head to CovCath and Conner outruns Cooper in a big 5A rivalry game. Bishop Brossart and Walton-Verona also remain unbeaten in their district and the Holmes win at Boyd County puts them into position to claim the district crown with a win next week.

The first KHSAA RPI standings have been released.  We cover those at 3:17.

Lots of good games in week 4 and the playmaker's were out in force.  District play is in full effect and several of those games came down to the end, including Brossart's 3 OT win at Nicholas County.  Cooper picks up their first win on the season and their coach, Randy Borchers, is this week's interview as the Jags prepare to play Conner in a big week five district game.  Dixie keeps rolling after winning at Beechwood; Highlands with a massive district win at Conner; the Holmes Bulldogs jump into their district race, beating Rowan County at home and much, much more...

Ryle Lady Raider basketball coach, Katie Haitz, is not only a well accomplished coach, but she’s also a well accomplished player. Playing four years at Boone County High School, Katie was a three-year starter, 1000 point scorer and a regional champion. She went on to play at Taylor University in Indiana, where she earned All-American honors in a season where she helped her team make the Elite 8 of the NAIA National Tournament. She got into coaching right out of college, rejoining the Rebels as an assistant under Nell Fookes.

Since becoming the head coach at Ryle in 2015, she has led the Lady Raiders to 4 of 5 regional championship games, 3 straight 9th region titles, a state title and 124 wins in those five seasons. Coach Haitz is a strong leader and the passion for her players and staff speak loudly in this episode.

Week 3 is over and week 4 is just beginning.  Offense's have risen and we're here to cover it.  Lots of points in NKY last week: defensive points, specials teams points, the Dixie Highway QB race gets more interesting and a kicker scored a touchdown.  Several teams remain unbeaten and the Lloyd Juggernauts have returned.  What more could you ask for?

The week 4 interview is with Paul Wiggins, Head Coach at Bishop Brossart High School.  The Mustangs notch their first win on the back of QB Jacob Leicht's 5 TD game, just in time for district play.
