In August 1885, a Chinese American mother, Mary Tape, fought the SF Board of Education’s discriminatory policies against her daughter, Mamie Tape. Learn from those who lived during the Spanish Flu of 1918. In this episode, I discuss what I learned about the pandemic through letters, and I also read letters written at that time. The letters come from the National Archives in DC, the WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, MO, and the British Medical Journal. After his death, Beethoven’s family found a letter in his desk, which had been written nearly 25 years earlier. The letter tells about his struggles with deafness and his retreat from society.
