Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 15:8 | A verse about the value of living upright

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 15:8 | A verse about the value of living upright

What come to Bible verse of the day? I’m Rev. Joseph Sanford coming to you on this third day of the new year and we are continuing in the book of wisdom that we call proverbs chapter 15 verse eight the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight, we’re weighing against our sacrifice versus prayer and sometimes we use the term pray for you as a way to kind of end the conversation when someone’s going through something tough, and some of us actually do pray, we put that person in our site and we lift them up and it pulls in our heart about what we can do how we can support them what this is lifting up this verse is that the sacrifice we would say is way more than a prayer and the time of this writing it would be it would be a great act that would require a lot of ritual and cleansing and purity and taking something and bringing it and offering it But if it’s done by the wicked and the wicked are people who think that God‘s rules God way they really apply to them. They are above that that sacrifices, worthless rather the prayer of someone who is humble, who is right who is trying to be true and honest to God that prayer is worth way more even though on the surface it seems to be a much smaller effort, because it is in the single act, but to live a life as an upright person is the kind of act and sacrifice that God requires that God loves that God wants from us and for Us.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 15:1 | A verse about how to respond to our world

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on this first day of the year 2024 and what better way to start off and to continue in the book of wisdom proverbs chapter 15 verse one a soft answer turns away raff, but a harsh word stirs up anger. We continue with this thought on how to respond to the world around us how to respond to people how to respond to situations and we as Christians as followers of Jesus Christ, that people who align our lives, and claim the book that we call the Bible full of wisdom like this we have to be the ones to do the hard work we have to be the ones to rise above to show the way to be the example to swallow our Pride Pick up our cross and live as Jesus calls us to live now Jesus didn’t write proverbs, but I think Jesus would be right here cheering on the writer the soft answer turns away wrath if we just stop and decide, we don’t need to be hard and blunt and tough but we can be soft because our goal is not to be right. Our goal is to turn away raff and we have to be the ones to start that process. If we’re harsh it’s only going to make people more angry If you go on the offense, it will only make people defensive so let’s start this new year off by claiming our place as Christians as followers of Jesus, let us respond as he did really well

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:18-19 | A verse about how to respond

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on this 27th day of December from the book of proverbs we’re going to read chapter 12 verses 18 through 19 rash words are like sword thrust, but the tongue of the wise brings healing, truthful, lips and doer forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment We’re back to being patient rash words when we react in the moment when we don’t take the time to listen and be prudent, it may feel good to stick it to somebody with our rash words. It may feel good in the moment, but when we have calmed down, we’ve collected our thoughts. The consequences of that rash reaction are going to endure for a long time. We are not gonna be seen as wise we’re not gonna be seen as people who are trustworthy, dependable, truthful, and forever. If we take our time and what we speak is the truth, a calm collected truth we’re going to become someone people do trust they’re going to remember that we are someone who can collect ourselves and respond in a wise way, if we lie if we in our rashness in our quest or thirst to really get our shot and start speaking things that aren’t true people will remember that, and that will have an impact on you for a long time

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:17 | A verse about telling the truth completely

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on this December 22 as we continue our walk-through this book of wisdom, the book of proverbs and today we read from chapter 12 verse 17 whoever speaks the truth, gives honest evidence, but false witness speaks deceitfully This is kind of a complicated bit of wisdom here because sometimes we we want to communicate something that is true, but we may embellish we may dress up the evidence. We may not tell the story exactly how it happened and friends we can always spot it when somethings too perfect when someone had the exact perfect answer in a situation that must’ve been really hard no one does we all struggle What impresses people is not that you had the perfect answer and that you really put someone in their place or you really handled the situation perfectly because that’s not relatable. Let’s be honest with each other if we wanna be people of truth, if we want to build the kind of relationship where we can really trust each other then we will always be honest in the evidence we provide. If you’re being deceitful at all people pick up on it you can pick up on it when others do it to you and you’re not quite sure what to think exactly about this person or from this person let’s just admit that we’re all human we’re all imperfect we’re never gonna do things exactly the right way and that’s OK just be honest, give honest evidence, and let your truth be who you are.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:15-16 | A verse about listening and patience

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on this 18th day of December. We are a week away from Christmas and we’re continuing through the book of proverbs chapter 12 verses 15 through 16 fools think their own way is right but the wise listen to advice. Fools show their anger at once, but the prudent ignore and insult, we’re really hitting some nerves here at least for me fools think their own way is right don’t we all don’t we all think that our way is right we wouldn’t be going that way we wouldn’t be stating that way if we didn’t think we were right but that’s what fools do the wise listen we listen first before we talk before we make our stance before we double down we listen to advice, because what is it really have harm to listen This is full show their anger at once, but the prudent ignore an insult. How much more peaceful would the world be if people just stopped when they heard an insult or when they felt offended or when they had feelings about something someone said or something that someone changed or some tradition that someone challenged what if we just stopped for a moment what if we listened first what if we didn’t hinge our immediate reaction on how it makes us feel instead if we were prudent if we listened if we embraced wisdom

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:1 | A verse about discipline

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:1 | A verse about discipline

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 12:1 | A verse about discipline

Welcome to Bible verse of the day. I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford, and we are working our way through this incredible book chalk full of wisdom, called proverbs, and today we’re going to look at chapter 12 verse number one whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but those who hate to be rebuked, are stupid, no none of us like to be rebuked. It’s uncomfortable it’s not what we look forward to in the day in the moment, but we should crave it in our lives not to be rebuked because we’re doing something stupid but because we want to be on a better path that’s what the book of wisdom that’s what our faith is all about and that’s what we as the church should be about for one another helping each other be on the right path and that means that we have to correct each other that’s discipline. The word disciple comes from the word discipline. It says that we’re students of something bigger says that we are learning and growing and students love to learn they love knowledge discipline means we are gaining knowledge I wanna know more I wanna know where I’m hurting people I wanna know where I’ve gotten off track and that means someone has to tell me that means I have to read and be open to it. I have to look in the scripture learn from those who have walked this path of faith longer than I have. I wanna have mentors I wanna have peers I want to have a accountability partners, because that’s what leads me on this beautiful path of life and faith, a life of discipline and knowledge.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 3:29-30 | A verse about how to live among people

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 3:29-30 | A verse about how to live among people

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford and we are tracking our way through the book we call proverbs this collection of wisdom, and today we’re going to continue in chapter 3 verses 29 through 30 do not plan harm against your neighbor who lives trustingly beside, you, do not quarrel with anyone without cause, when no harm has been done to you Reminds me of the sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me. Now we know words can hurt we know words can tear down. Words can weigh on our mind, but sometimes we give way more power to words than they should have, and we pick fights we harm our neighbor we quarrel with people over their words, and even less than their words it’s their perceptions their beliefs. They’re stances their opinions their ideas so much of that going on in the world right now, people want their neighbor to think as they think we want our neighbors to believe what we believe, and if they don’t, then we are, we are very tempted to quarrel with them. We are very tempted to cause harm with the way that we look at them with the way that we speak to them, or about them with the way that we treat them may be passive aggressively, maybe more bluntly, and directly we are the people of Jesus Christ. We are the people of wisdom, so let us live by this proverb with no harm, and no quarrel.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 3:13-14 | A verse about pursuit of what matters

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford I’m coming to you on this wonderful December 4 and we are going to read from proverbs chapter 3 verses 13 through 14 happy or those who find wisdom and those who get understanding for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. This word for happy, sometimes is translated. Blessed another way to say it is on the right path those who are finding wisdom those who get understanding they are on the right path now we are all human beings we are all trying to grow. We’re all trying to experience life in the depths of joy and what it is to just experience being alive, relationships, awareness And we’ve started that journey from our first breath and will continue that journey to our last breath but sometimes we get distracted sometimes we get focused on the wrong things. In this case it’s referencing silver and gold. It’s that stuff that really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme it’s that stuff that really won’t mean much to us and just a couple of weeks the things that you buy today they’re not gonna bring you any real source of joy in a few weeks or a month they probably be in the trash by the end of the year. Those who are on the right path are those who are not seeking that stuff that fades, but are seeking the thing that stands the test of time wisdom, the very wisdom and understanding of God and life, and everything It offers.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 3:11-12 | A verse about the way things work

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on this November 29 as we continue our long and wonderful track for the book of proverbs today chapter 3 verses 11 and 12 my child do not despise the Lords discipline or be wary of the Lord reproof, for the Lord reproves, the one, the Lord loves, as a father of the son, and whom the Lord delights This is wonderful. This is talking about that we belong to God that Israel is a son to God eventually personified in Jesus as God‘s son, but that extends to us as children as siblings of Christ we are children as well God delights, and you got the lights in us. We are not to despise the Lord discipline there are ways the world works. I call it the flow. You don’t have to like that term but there’s a way things work if you treat people right they treat you right and return not always they’re not perfect but if you live right rightly, mostly you’re gonna be in good relationship with people and when you’re not well, there are consequences when you do things the wrong way when you are selfish when you’re greedy life turns in a way that’s not good for you. It makes seem good at first but it won’t last that’s the way that it works. We’re always looking for God‘s discipline in the way that we experience consequences and the way that we live our relationship so let’s celebrate the way that God loves us by showing us the way or we might call it the flow.

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford on this November 24 as we relish over Thanksgiving. We’re going to continue with proverbs chapter 3 reading verses, nine and 10 honor the Lord with your substance, and with the first fruits of all your produce, then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine honoring the Lord. What a day to be thankful to God about all that we have in our lives this is speaking to the way that we work and produce, and although most of us aren’t farmers, most of us aren’t working with trees, we do produce we do work we do contribute and we receive things for that work, this understanding of giving everything first to God your first fruits and then having plenty having so much that you’re abundant isn’t some promise that will if you give to God God‘s gonna give you way more back rather if you operate in the mindset in the heart set that everything belongs to God and you live out of gratitude being grateful for what you have so grateful that you’re willing to give up the first and maybe it’s 10% like a tie to God you start to learn that what you have is plentywhen we live not in a consumer way, we start to realize that we already have what we need and that what we have is an abundance and when we start to make that change, we find that that change works through our entire lives

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on November 20 as we continue our work through the book of Proverbs today we read from chapter 3 verses five through six trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight, and all your ways acknowledge the Lord and the Lord will make straight your paths Straight our path refers to not having a hindrance not getting twisted and not getting tripped up. That’s a hard way to live life not hard, obviously easy way to live life but hard to find that way of life because we’re always getting tripped up and even when we think we’re not, even if we think it’s some form of of good church thing to pretend that we don’t get tripped up if we’re really convinced we’re not getting tripped up I think we’re fooling ourselves I don’t think we’re being honest But if we trust and God with all of our heart and not worry about what we think about what’s happening, but try to understand how God may be looking at that that’s a way that we can start to find that straighter path and everything we do if we think about it through God through our gratitude to God through the love and mercy of God we’re gonna find the way that’s going to be more that way that we hope to live this straight path where we’re not getting tripped up the way we learn about the way of God is through the church through each other through having conversation sharing being in relationship, so live your life in the community. Trust God with everything you are.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 3:3 | A verse about loyalty and faithfulness

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford come to you on November 15 as we continue our work or track for the book of Proverbs today we read from chapter 3 verse three do not let loyalty and faithfulness for sake you behind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart These are important, loyalty and faithfulness faithfulness comes from this understanding of trust that we believe we believe so much that our actions follow that belief and loyalty are allegiance is to God alone not anyone not anything else everything we do needs to be founded on the loyalty of God. Trust that what God says things will be. Things are are exactly what they will be in are so much that we actually live accordingly, and to do that we’ve got to remember all the time because we forget there are a lot of voices out there, competing for your loyalty competing for your trust. We must bind the ways of God around our neck right them on our very hearts, because sometimes people will even want your loyalty and faithfulness, and say it’s actually God but it’s not it’s for them it’s for their perspective it’s for their message it’s for their understanding the only way for us to stay true to know is to be reminded to read to stay founded to stay up-to-date to stay, committed to stay loyal and faithful, and all that we do.

Do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare. They will give you, the word for teaching is literally the word for Torah or instruction and so the voice of wisdom is reminding us that what we need we have that doesn’t mean we follow all those rules today because there are many that we don’t and there are many that we’d say no that’s not for today but the whole idea is understand the teachings that commandments the Bible, and the way that it has moved and it’s headed somewhere if we could trace the movement of the way people are treated in the way those laws came to be we see that there’s a trajectory for where God is leading us until one day we arrive at that place that we find in revelation, 21 and 22 or we find at all things are together all people and it’s healing and we’re somewhere on that track if you wanna find life if you want to find a abundance if you wanna know what satisfaction and peace and goodness are, we’re going to find those and studying our faith learning that trajectory, so let us turn to the teaching and commandments to find life

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you as we work our way through the book of Proverbs today we’re gonna turn to chapter 1 and read verses 22 through verse 23. How long of simple ones were you love being simple, how long will scoffers delight, and their scoffing and fools hate knowledgewisdom is personified and proverbs and we find that person of wisdom asking how long we’re gonna be simple idea of simplicity is that we just take things on the surface without thinking about it and we just make our judgments how often that is the case today you can turn on a different news channel you can talk to different people and they just start talking about information that really they’ve never thought about they’ve never waited or considered other perspectives they’ve never had conversations with people who think differently they just passed along what it is that has been given to them. That’s the opposite of what we’re supposed to do we’re not just regurgitating that which we haven’t even taken time to digest. We aren’t just an echo chamber of other people we’ve been given minds we’ve been given brains and smarts we’ve been given relationships we’ve been given the opportunity to grow, do you hate knowledge you hate learning if so, proverbs says you’re acting foolishly let’s not be simple let’s be people who dig in and think with our God-given brain

Chapter 1 verse eight here, my child, your father’s instruction and do not reject your mother’s teaching, fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but where it often starts with us is in our home and maybe you had a father and a mother maybe you had one or the other maybe you had them either but I hope you had people in your life to guide you and while they’re not perfect, they are who we are given they are the ones put in in charge of us to love us to show us the way they’ve messed up and they are still learning To They have a lot to learn but what they have learned has been so helpful for us so it’s good for us to think about fearing God, but also respecting in that same vein, our parents are guardians whoever have helped us along the way if we can get that relationship right show appreciation grow into our love, our grace and our mercy for them Then we show that we are already on the path of wisdom while our parents are guardians are not perfect. Let us not reject them. Let us hear what they have to say as a starting place, and let us join in that conversation as we grow and mature, may those relationships that we began with be the ones that CS through the whole way.

Bible Verse of the Day | Proverbs 1:7 | A verse about the fear of the Lord

Welcome to Bible verse of the day I’m Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you and we are going to start looking at some proverbs proverbs is a great book of wisdom we’re going to begin with chapter 1 verse seven, and it reads the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, fools despise wisdom and instruction This is a commonly quoted verse. The fear of the Lord. Everyone wants to have the fear of the Lord but what is the fear of the Lord mean? Are we supposed to quake and shiver at the thought of God‘s presence? I don’t think that’s what Jesus had in mind I think what Jesus brought to us was the sense of peace and worthiness that only he could provide not that we’d be afraid of God, but what this is speaking to is similar to if you’ve ever stood in front of the roaring ocean, and seen the mightiness of the waves. You’re not afraid of the waves, but you do respect them you do understand their power, not part of what the proverb is getting is fear of the Lord is where you despise evil where are you Long for good because that is the way of Yahweh, and so it makes sense that the fear of the Lord, the beginning of knowledge and the second part is the fools, despise wisdom and instruction, smart people despise evil but the fools despise wisdom and instruction. Let’s be wise, let’s seek the way of the Lord, and let’s read ourselves of any other desire desire.
