Ep. 129 - Nero Part II: Mommy’s Little Party Boy

Last time on HPH we began the story of Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, better known as Nero. In that episode we talked about his mother Agrippina and how she worked the system to marry Claudius, who was emperor of Rome and also her paternal uncle. She enjoyed her time pulling the strings and secretly running Rome, but eventually she grew tired of Claudius and had him killed. Now her sweet little boy was in charge of the entire Roman empire and boy was he going to have a wild ass time during his reign. In this episode we’re telling you all about Nero’s rule and his downfall and all the weird shit he was into. It’s a crazy story and we just know you’re going to love it, but first you need to grab a drink and settle in and then, and only then, can you enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Nero Part II…Mommy’s Little Party Boy

Ep. 126 - The Fall of the Aztecs Part II: Hernan Cortes and the Temple of MonteDOOMa

In the last episode we began the story of Hernan Cortes and his fated meeting with Montezuma, the leader of the Aztecs. When we left you, Cortes had smashed through every roadblock the Aztecs had thrown his way and was ready to finally meet the Emperor of Tenochtitlan.  In this episode of HPH we're finishing the story by telling you all about what happened when these two worlds collided in a no-holds barred fight to the death! I mean...you can probably tell what happened by the title of the episode and the fact that there is no Aztec empire in 2023, BUT it's not about the destination, it's about the friends we make and betray along the way!  So, grab a few drinks because this is a long boy, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Fall of the Aztecs Part II: Hernan Cortes and the Temple of MonteDOOMa!

BONUS Re-Release #2! Ep. 13 - H. H. Holmes

We're still on break, but we're re-releasing the second part of our 2019 series on serial killer H. H. Holmes, who was the inspiration for the horror survival game, The Devil in Me. Why is that relevant to anything, you ask? Well during the break Chris has been getting drunk and playing the game live on twitch for the entertainment of the listening audience.  You can catch the next stream on Wednesday January 4th at 7pm CST! Find us on Twitch, Facebook, or Youtube to watch him fail miserably at the task of keeping the virtual heroes of the story from dying horrible, gruesome deaths!  And if you miss it, or have missed the other parts, they're on demand on the same sites!  We'll be back with a new episode very soon, until then, enjoy this classic!

In this episode, Greg and Chris dive into the riveting conclusion to the H. H. Holmes saga. What happened to Benjamin Pitezel, aka Best Friend Perry? How was Holmes found out? All of these questions and more will be answered in this special "We needed more time to share our Halloween topic so we're still talking about it in early November" episode.   Grab a drink, actually grab a drink and drop a few happy pills in the bottom because this one gets dark and you might need more than a few hilarious jokes to pull you through.

Ep. 109 - Lafayette Pt. 2 - The French are Assholes

Ep. 109 - Lafayette Pt. 2 - The French are Assholes

When we last left you, the Marquis de Lafayette had helped lead the Americans to victory over the Brits and was an international hero. Now it was time for him to return to France where he hoped to spread liberty and democracy to his own people. Unfortunately for him, his people weren't ready for that and what followed was a violent series of revolutions that would see Lafayette become a villain who would be imprisoned and exiled from his own country. But there are a lot of twists and turns along the way and maybe by the end you'll still think he's pretty neat.  So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Lafayette Part 2: The French Are Assholes!

Ep. 108 - Lafayette Pt. 1: French by Blood, American by BLOODSHED

Ep. 108 - Lafayette Pt. 1: French by Blood, American by BLOODSHED

In the late 18th century the American's were struggling mightily against the British Empire in their quest for independence. They lifted their boombox, blasted Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler (look it up kids) and cranked it so loud that it could be heard across the ocean. It was then that a dashing, daring, handsome and caring 19 year old Frenchman heard the call and came to the United States to not only lead them in battle but to also force the French government to provide desperately needed aid to the Americans. Without him, the war might have gone completely different and it's damn time you learn his story. In this episode we're talking about his early life and his bromance with one George "American Jesus" Washington. So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this wheels off episode of Hundred Proof History titled Lafayette Part 1: French by Blood, American by BLOODSHED!

Ep. 107 - The Battle of Shanghai: World War One and a Half

Ep. 107 - The Battle of Shanghai: World War One and a Half

In 1937 Imperial Japan decided that the heavily divided nation of China was ripe for the picking and decided to invade.  China realized it was outmatched so their leaders came up with a daring strategy: Try to draw Japan into an urban battle within the biggest city in front of a massive international population. Because, hey, if you're gonna get your poo pushed in, you might as well do it in front of an audience. That's been our experience at least. This week we're taking a look at what some historians call the first actual battle of WW2, and kicking off our 2022 coverage of the sequel to the war to end all wars. So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Battle of Shanghai: World War One and a Half.

Ep. 105 - The Chernobyl Disaster: HBO Lied to Me!

Ep. 105 - The Chernobyl Disaster: HBO Lied to Me!

In April of 1986 disaster struck in the tiny nuclear city of Pripyat, Ukraine when the nearby nuclear reactor exploded hurling debris, and radiation, into the air. It turns out that this disaster was entirely predictable and avoidable but in those days there was no pessimism allowed in the Soviet Union so the fuse to the proverbial powder keg was lit and ignored until the whole thing blew up. In this episode of HPH we're taking a look at the failings of the reactor, teaching you literally everything we know about nuclear reactors, and of course telling you about the explosion and the horror that followed. So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Chernobyl Disaster: HBO Lied to Me!

Ep. 104 - The Guatemala Coup: This War is Bananas B A N A N A S!

Ep. 104 - The Guatemala Coup: This War is Bananas B A N A N A S!

In the mid 1950's the United States was terrified of Communism but was also coming off of that sweet, sweet World War II high which made the men in power believe they could impose their will on just about anyone. Enter the tiny Central American nation of Guatemala. For half a century, Guatemalans had been growing bananas for an American owned company and wasn't getting much of anything in return. So they decided to have a little capitalism of their own and cut into that company's profits. It worked out about as well as you probably think it did, but this is still a crazy story of international meddling and mind boggling corruption. So, grab your drinks, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Guatemala Coup: This War is Bananas. B A N A N A S!

Ep. 103 - Jesus of Nazareth: Chris and Greg Ruin Christmas!

Ep. 103 - Jesus of Nazareth: Chris and Greg Ruin Christmas!

In the early decades of the common era, a Jewish preacher gained a big following for being a pretty cool dude and helping the poor Jews of Galilee. Then he headed for Jerusalem, attacked the Jewish Temple, and was captured and executed by the Romans. Over the following millenniums his story developed into the most dominant religion on the face of the earth.  In this week's very special holiday episode of HPH, we're taking a look at the very few historical facts we know about this man and the world he lived in and comparing it to the stories of the gospels.  And since this is HPH, we probably are going to upset a few people, and for that we apologize. We just want your love.  And that is why you should grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled Jesus of Nazareth: Chris and Greg Ruin Christmas!
