21 Podcast Sits Down with Marvin Pierre of Eight Million Stories to Hear His Story

In this  episode of 21, we talk with  Marvin Pierre, Co-Founder and Executive
Director of Eight Million Stories (8MS).  The mission of 8MS is to transform the
lives   of   vulnerable   youth   (12–21-year-old)   through   education,   skills   training,
employment, and authentic relationships.  Marvin and his team work to bring hope,
vision,   and   practical   work/life   skills   to   young   people   who  feel   disenfranchised,
disconnected, and/or in despair.   The work of 8MS is aimed at eradicating the
school-to-prison pipeline by creating alternate success pathways for students who
are   not   succeeding   in   traditional   learning   settings...breathing   new   life   into   the
concept of ‘no child left behind.’

Marvin attended Trinity College in Connecticut, and later, the University of Houston.
He started his career in investment banking, but later heeded his life’s calling to
work   with   young   people   in   a   way   that   is   truly   meaningful.     Listen   as   Marvin
describes his path towards fulfilling his purpose, the role that his mentors  and
sponsors played along the way, and how a song from a famous hip hop group
impacted the name of his nonprofit.  (Reminders of the power of networking, betting
on yourself, and grasping moments of inspiration!)
And while work is a priority for Marvin (he refers to his students as ‘his kids’), he
also has other neat things going for him outside of work.  After hearing this episode,
we   will   hope   that   you   will   be   inspired   to   learn   more   about   8MS   at

www.eightmillionstories.org, and endeavor to make a difference in young person’s
life, that may very well hang in the balance.  Enjoy this episode of 21!

21 Podcast with Marcus Guillory, A Modern Renaissance Man

21 Podcast with Marcus Guillory, A Modern Renaissance Man

In this first of a 2-part episode of the 21 Podcast, we have a great conversation with Marcus Guillory. Marcus is an intellect, author, Hollywood writer, musician…a modern-day renaissance man.

Marcus grew up in Houston, Texas, and he has deep family roots in Louisiana. His Dad was a renowned cowboy, so Marcus’ formative years were strongly influenced by a neat fusion of rodeo and Creole cultures. Marcus immerses you in the Texan Creole Culture in his novel, Red Now and Laters, which was released to critical acclaim in 2014.

Throughout his education, Marcus excelled academically, and he had a particular interest in writing and music. After high school, Marcus left home to attend the University of Pennsylvania. Post college, he began a career as a successful financial analyst.

His life-long passion for learning and music would soon take center stage again, guiding his move to New Orleans to attend law school at Tulane University and subsequently start a band, Taino. And while on the surface this sounds fun and sexy, for Marcus this season of his life was all about his willingness to grind and make a way where one seems unlikely.

Marcus creates the life he wants, and he tells his story as only a great writer can. Marcus’ drive and work ethic are unmatched. And while he lives what most would deem the ‘glamorous Hollywood life’, at his core Marcus is the authentic, smart, Southern guy who you would love catching up with over a bourbon, BBQ, and cigar.

21 Talks with Evelyn Bennett, National Vice President and Independent Consultant for Arbonne

On this episode of the 21 Podcast, we talk with Evelyn Bennett, a National Vice President, and Independent Consultant for Arbonne, a company that provides products that support a holistic approach to beauty, health, and well-being.

Evelyn is no stranger to hard work, and she contributes her work ethic to lessons learned from her Mom at a very early age. While in college and playing basketball, Evelyn interned for a local news station. Post College, she continued her career pursuits in broadcasting, eventually becoming a very successful TV news producer in Reno, Nevada.

Evelyn, like many of us, experienced a season when she realized that she had to set clear intentions related to the life she wanted to design for herself and for her family. It was then that Evelyn decided to bet on herself and become an entrepreneur. She knew that she could earn money and build a business that provides the flexibility to be fully present for her family.

When she initially started her Arbonne business, Evelyn kept her full-time job. During this time, she did not cut corners. She consistently ‘worked her business’ and invested in her development. She studied every aspect of her venture, and devoted time to daily reading. (Some ingredients for success never change. Readers are leaders.)

As you listen to this episode, challenge yourself to reconsider that side hustle you have wanted to start for years. Or engineer ways to shift your work schedule to allow more time for your family and self-care. We all have the ability to design the lives that we want. Let’s do it, 21 Family!

The Fabulous Journey Part 3- NY Projects to a MBE British Star

The Fabulous Journey Part 3- NY Projects to a MBE British Star

This is the third in our 3-part series with Fabulous “Fab” Flournoy. (Notice that we don’t say our last segment as we hope Fab will join us for another chat in 2021. Setting the intention!)

This episode follows Fab’s professional career, which may be familiar to many who will listen. Fab continues to share his story with an authentic spirit of humility. Off the court, Fab is kind, laid back, and humorous. On the court, he is a fierce, formidable opponent. And to the latter point, Fab’s current workout and diet regimens are just as disciplined as when he played. (No cheeseburgers for Fab!)

There is no question that Fab is living out his purpose. He was created to play basketball. The sport is in his DNA. Fab will always have a special connection to the hardwood. Period.

Now that all 3 episodes of our discussion with Fab are available, consider a ‘binge’ and listen to Fab’s story in 1 sitting. We are confident that you will hear at least one nugget of wisdom that could become a new habit for you in the new year.

As we transition from 2020 to 2021, the 21 Family expresses gratitude to all our supporters.

The Fabulous Journey Part 2- Losing A Loved One

The Fabulous Journey Part 2- Losing A Loved One

This is the second in our 3-part series with Fabulous “Fab” Flournoy.

When we leave Fab in episode 1, he is about to begin his collegiate journey. College basketball takes Fab from New York to Texas, then Louisiana.

It is during this season of his life, the Fab begins to really know how good he is at basketball, and that the sport can be a tool to help him create the life he wants. (This is still very true for Fab today!)

While in college, Fab was diagnosed with dyslexia. He embraced resources provided to him and transformed his learning difference into a gift for storytelling. Dyslexia was yet another “Virgil” that shifted Fab to a higher level of greatness.

Fab also faced tragedy, as his brother was killed while he was away at college. Fab mourned the loss of his brother and shifted his sadness into a determination to honor his brother’s memory through his hard work and love of basketball. Fab has done just that, and then some.

This segment of 21 is the first in a 3-part series of a recent conversation with had with Fabulous “Fab” Flournoy. Fab is one of Drew’s former teammates with the Newcastle Eagles, and he is currently with the Toronto Raptors organization.

You cannot be a fan of the British Basketball League and not know Fab. His accomplishments in the sport seem surreal. He is not only a BBL record-holder, a fan favorite, a medalist with the EnglandNational Team, and a BBC Commentator, in 2017, Fab was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to British basketball and the community.

Fab shares his story with Drew and Yvonne in a way that is authentic, captivating and inspiring. It feels like old friends catching up after years apart. This episode guides us from Fab’s formative years through high school.

Lastly, listen for the name, Virgil. He could very well be the person who played a major role in changing the trajectory of Fab’s life. Who are the Virgils in your life? And do you face your Virgils in a way that set you up for long-term success?

As a reminder, 21 Listeners, it is not where you start…it is where you finish AND how you create and embrace milestone moments along the way.

21 Talks with Brock Jessel, Houston Dynamo Sr. Director Broadcasting & Entertainment

On this segment of 21, we talk with Brock Jessel, Senior Director of Broadcasting & Entertainment for the Houston Dynamo.

On 21, we like to highlight career opportunities that are related to sports, even if you are not a professional athlete. Brock is a magnet for new opportunities, rarely saying ‘no’ to a new professional challenge.

Brock grew up playing soccer and continued to play while a student athlete at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). At SHSU, Brock majored in Radio & Broadcasting, a field of study he leveraged to open doors for an internship with a major TV network.

Brock’s path to the Dynamo is paved with stops at all the major Houston professional sports teams…the Rockets (NBA), the Astros (MLB), and the Texans (NFL). Additionally, he has applied his expertise to the production and/or editing for the 2017 Super Bowl LI, 2013 NBA All Star Game, 2 MLB All Star Games, and a U.S. Open Cup Final…and he has the awards to show for it! Brock’s position with the Dynamo has a footprint that extends beyond the team. Brocks currently produces broadcasts for the Houston Dash (professional women’s soccer team) and Texas Southern University football (yes, that is American football, not futbol!).

Brock is a master networker, who has learned to set himself apart from the crowd. He is also a generous spirit which is evident in the time that he spends volunteering with Katy Youth Soccer and the Boys Scouts of America. With all that he has on his plate, we are impressed that Brock still makes time to volunteer…and we are especially thankful for his willingness to share his story with us.

21 Talks with University of Texas at El Paso Offensive Coordinator, Mike Canales

On this segment of 21, we talk with University of Texas at El Paso Offensive Coordinator, Mike Canales

Mike grew up playing baseball and football primarily, and he did also try his hand at basketball.  His love for football won out as he attended Utah State University and played Quarterback. Discipline is Mike’s superpower; and it is that character trait that helped him become a successful college athlete, and later, a coach with a career that most could only dream possible. At the collegiate level, Mike has coached at his alma mater and at the University of Tennessee, University of South Florida, Brigham Young University (BYU), and the University of North Texas...to name a few.  During a brief stint in the NFL, Mike was a coach for the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals, but he returned to the college gridiron because that is his true passion.

Coaching is Mike’s calling.  Period.  And Mike is a wonderful example of someone who leans into his purpose to be a blessing to others.  He loves the game, respects his players, and honors other coaches who have helped him along his path. Mike has a humble spirit, and he works to instill the principles of discipline, humility, and hard work with all whom he coaches.

Mike is also very candid about his desire to be a head coach at the college level. The 21 family loves to see great things happen to great people, so we believe that will happen for Coach!  Let’s see how things shake out this season.  If there are any Athletic Directors listening to this podcast, check out Coach Canales! Listen as Mike discusses his childhood, his family (he denotes spending time with his wife as a hobby!), and the impact that COVID-19 and race issues in our country have impacted him, his players, and the season.

21 Talks with Andre Jones, European Basketball Professional

21 Talks with Andre Jones, European Basketball Professional

On this segment of 21, you’ll meet Andre Jones.

Andre is a basketball star who hails from Suffolk, Virginia, which is a part of the Hampton Roads area.  (For the sports buffs, Hampton Roads has been the source of top athletic talent, including Allen Iverson and Michael Vick, for starters.)

Andre epitomizes the pro athlete whose path was not what he thought it would be, but the trials he went through make him so much more appreciative of the success he currently experiences.

Andre was a star basketball player at Nansemond River High School.  He was highly recruited by well-known colleges until he was sidelined by an injury.  Once the dust settled and he healed from his injury, the big-name schools were no longer vying for him.  He decided to attend Winthrop University where he soon learned that he was not the big fish in the smaller pond.  And while he excelled at Winthrop, he also gained an appreciation for the tremendous talent of other basketball players who may not have had the same name recognition in high school.

When Andre graduated from college, he did not immediately go into the pros as he had always dreamed.  Before receiving the opportunity to play professionally, Andre worked for a non-profit organization whose work centered around children.  What may have seemed like a dream deferred, was really Andre’s training ground for lessons of humility and gratitude.

Today, Andre enjoys a career and personal life that he never imagined.  As we settled in our recording with Andre, he shared with us how wonderfully humbling it is for him to travel places, and people recognize him and want to meet him.  And for the #boymoms listening to this podcast, Andre shares how he wished he would have waited a little later in life before making dating a priority.  Such powerful advice our young sons need to hear today!!!

As you listen to this podcast, we are sure you will agree that Andre’s greatest life chapters are still ahead of him....and we look forward to seeing all that he has yet to accomplish.  We thank Andre for his candor, authenticity, and transparency. Everyone will be able to relate to some part of his journey.

21 Talks with Mike Niemi, Paetow High School Head Basketball Coach

"Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters."--John Wooden

On this segment of 21, we talk with Coach Michael Niemi.  Mike is the Head Basketball Coach at Paetow High School in Katy, Texas.

Mike loves basketball but has never been one to relish the limelight.  His success at Katy High School (which is also where Drew played) paved the path for Mike to play college basketball at Southern Methodist University (SMU).  While at SMU, Mike made basketball his priority while also focusing on his appreciation for Fine Arts. (How many basketball players can you say that about?)

Post college, Mike knew that he wanted to coach the game, but his career path was not as easy as he thought it would be.  Mike became discouraged when he was overlooked for head coaching opportunities, and he decided to leave coaching for a profession that paid more and provided a more predictable schedule.

It wasn’t long, however, before Mike decided that his life’s purpose and passion are tied to basketball.  Within a short time, he returned to coaching and it wasn’t long before he received the head coaching position he had always wanted.

For Mike, coaching is not a job.  It’s his calling.  He considers his players and their families are a part of his extended family.

Listen as Mike discusses the highs and lows of coaching, and how COVID-19 and the renewed focus on race relations may impact how he coaches and leads his players.

21 Talks with Moochie Norris, Retired 12-Year NBA Proffesional

21 Talks with Moochie Norris, Retired 12-Year NBA Proffesional

“Create the moment.”

On this segment of 21, we talk with Martyn Bernard “Moochie” Norris.

Moochie grew up in Washington D.C., and while he enjoyed basketball, he did not become serious about the sport until his last 2 years in high school.

Moochie’s college basketball career led him to Texas, Alabama and Florida, which eventually set the stage for him being drafted into the NBA in 1996 in the 2nd Round, as the 33rd pick overall.  As a point of reference, the 1996 NBA Draft Class is considered by many to be the most talented class in draft history as it included: Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Ray Allen, and Kobe Bryant.

Moochie’s professional career spanned 12 years, and included affiliations with the Houston Rockets, Seattle Supersonics, and the New York Knicks.  And for our bobblehead aficionados, Moochie is a part of an elite group of NBA players to have his own bobblehead figurine!

Listening to Moochie, you are reminded of the importance of being fully present, living in the moment, and pivoting quickly when faced with potential setbacks.

In this current season, Moochie coaches young basketball players who view him as a role model.  He enjoys teaching the next generation and brings his high energy and trademark sense of humor to his coaching methodology.

We are blessed to know Moochie and thank him for sharing his story and supporting our podcast.

21 Talks with Elizabeth Lloyd, A Woman Who is Rocking' It, Houston Rockets Group Sales Account Executive

21 Talks with Elizabeth Lloyd, A Woman Who is Rocking' It, Houston Rockets Group Sales Account Executive

There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.” – Author Unknown

On this segment of 21, we talk with Elizabeth Lloyd, Group Sales Account Executive with the Houston Rockets.

On 21 we like to highlight career opportunities that are related to sports even if you are not a professional athlete.  Elizabeth is a super example of someone who has navigated a career within sports management/operations.

Elizabeth grew up around athletes and sports, and while attending Texas Southern University she was inspired to connect her degree in Communication and Public Relations to a job with a professional sports team.

In her position with the Houston Rockets, Elizabeth manages client relationships with corporations and other large groups.  She puts the needs of her clients first; always delivering a first-class experience on game day.

Elizabeth will be the first to tell you that a job with a professional sports team is not about “glitz & glam,” but is one that requires a lot of hard work and long hours. Elizabeth’s success is the result of her grit, willingness to network, and ability to understand that sometimes hearing ‘no’ is part of the game. She is tough as nails in a field that is still largely male-dominated, and she serves as a role model for other women who are starting their careers in sports and entertainment.

Elizabeth’s favorite role is that of Mom to her children.  She is also a leader in our community through her volunteer efforts, and she serves as an Executive Advisory Board Member for the NBA Retired Players Association in Houston.

Elizabeth rocks!!!

21 Talks with Ant Martin, Former International Basketball Pro

21 Talks with Ant Martin, Former International Basketball Pro

On this segment of 21, we talk with Anthony “Ant” Martin. Ant grew up in New York City and has had a life-long love for basketball. Ant played at the legendary Holcombe Rucker Park, The Rucker, in Harlem.

Basketball served as a means for Ant to leave New York and move to Texas to play college basketball. The lessons he learned during his years playing college basketball are still powerful teachings today. Ant valued friendship over sports and fought his way through injuries when many would have given up hope.

We had so much fun talking with Ant.  His powerful storytelling draws you in; you can visualize his experiences in the way that he describes them…almost like watching a movie. And sticking with that comparison, Ant’s movie is in some ways like a fusion of The Real Rucker Park Legends and Love & Basketball.

Ant currently lives in Rosharon, Texas, with his wife and kids.

21 Talks BLM with Sonya Pitcaithly & April McCullar

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”– James Baldwin

While one of the objectives of 21 is to equip student athletes with knowledge and life lessons that extend beyond the court, we also understand that our podcast will serve as a platform to discuss relevant, and sometimes difficult societal topics. In response to the recent death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, we previously talked with Coach Matt Nogie and Mike Ojo about what coaches and players can do pave a positive path forward. In this episode, listen as we talk to April McCullar and Sonya Pitcaithly, both moms to 11-year-old sons who love basketball.

Like so many parents, April and Sonya are trying to process the events surrounding George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement, while grappling with how to discuss issues of race with their children.

We thank April and Sonya for their willingness to share their thoughts on this forum. We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to combating racism, but we also know that change cannot happen without courageous conversations, active listening, and an innate belief in the power of universal goodness.

21 will continue to lend our microphone to these crucial conversations for as long as it takes to finally see much needed healing in race relations.  All lives cannot matter until Black lives matter
