Dr. Nick Walker is the author of the book Neuroqueer Heresies: Notes on the Neurodiversity Paradigm, Autistic Empowerment, and Postnormal Possibilities. Dr. Walker coined the word Neuroqueer and applied the queer theory to the discussions about Neurodivergents. According to Dr. Walker, Neuroqueer is a verb that urges us to make the decision that Autistics and other Neurodivergents will accept ourselves for who we are and not try to fit ourselves into what society has constructed as a "normal brain" s. a "different brain." Dr. Walker will bring her perspective to the conversations about Neurodiversity, sexual orientation and gender identity that will challenge us to rethink how we understand and act.

One aspect of being Autistic that has many pieces to it is food. Autistics can have sensory issues with food textures and digesting certain foods. There is also another sensory matter for Autistics that is interoception. Interoception is how the body communicates messages to the brain such as "I am hungry" "I am thirsty." "I am full, stop eating." "I haven't eaten in a while, please feed me." These can be why many Autistics have eating disorders that includes being fat. Kelly Lenza is an Autistic and an amazing self-advocate for Autistics who live in larger bodies.

David Gray-Hammond reworked his essays from his blog on emergentdivergence.com and put them into an anthology entitled: The New Normal: Autistic Musings on the Threat of a Broken Society. Throughout the book, David writes that the suffering that many Autistics experience is because of a society that is broken. David talks about the word Neuroqueer, and how Autistics are Neuroqueering language. David wrote his book as a love letter to the Autistic community that helped him through drug and alcohol addiction and is still helping him to this day.

Maybe you got a notice that your support services were cancelled.  Your pet needs to go to the Vet.  Maybe you are facing the real threat of homelessness.  Autistics face more crises for various reasons, and it adds more stress on top of our challenging lives.  When people around you try to minimize the impact of those crises on you it worsens our situation.  Becca and I will give more advice on what you can do to take care of yourself in those moments.

Because the 4th of July can be one of the worst days for Autistics. A lot of Autistics are the opposite of the general population in that our seasonal depression is worse during the summer and better during the winter. Regardless of the season you experience the worst depression, Autistic Adults can benefit from planning some good self-care strategies. I will be joined by Andrew Gurza who is a gay queer person with cerebral palsy, and an exceptional advocate for all disabled people through his own podcast Disability After Dark and social media presence on several platforms. Andrew and I will talk together about what is happening with disabled people who are LGBTQIA+, as well as Autistic people. Andrew is going to talk about what is happening with disabled people in general, while I will be talking about what is happening with Autistic people. Andrew will share a heart wrenching story with you all about an incident of abuse that he experienced from a professional caregiver. I am making a one-time exception for him with regards to his use of language as he tells this particular story. It is important that people hear what is truthfully happening to disabled people.
