4FJ Qoli Vakamatau Radio Show: How fishing has changed in Fiji

Qoli Veinanumi (Communal Fishing) is an important part of Fijian culture. It is about fishers sharing their catch with the Chief, the herald, the spokesperson, the elders every time so that fishers continue to be blessed when they go out to sea and so, the mana will remain in the ocean.

But the ocean is not as abundant as it once was because of how fishing has changed.

Alifereti Tawake, Council Chair & Technical Advisor at The LMMA Network explains how fishing has changed and what this means for Fiji’s fishing grounds and being able to practice Qoli Veinanumi.

There are many practical and local solutions to fish in ways that can help ensure our fishing grounds can support our needs today and tomorrow.

4FJ Qoli Vakamatau Radio Show: Better Mud Crab Catches (iTaukei)

4FJ Qoli Vakamatau Radio Show: Better Mud Crab Catches (iTaukei)

Mud crabs, known in Fiji as qari, are an important source of food and income and are caught mainly by women in Fiji’s coastal communities. But increasingly undersize mud crabs are hitting our markets, which is a red warning light that action is needed.

So Taru Veibi, a Fiji Local Marine Managed Network community facilitator from Bua Loma Ni Koro in Bua, and Margaret Fox, a fisheries expert for SPC, shared stories about the challenges fishers face today and how we can get bigger, better catches.

Calls from listeners were off the hook.

4FJ Qoli Vakamatau Radio Show: Tabu areas, what works, what doesn’t? (iTaukei)

4FJ Qoli Vakamatau Radio Show: Tabu areas, what works, what doesn’t? (iTaukei)

Qoli Vakamatau Show guests, Waisea Naisilisili from the Wildlife Conseration Society-Fiji and Tuimavela Hemo, Chairman of the Navakavu Marine Protected Area in the Tikina of Suva, discuss what works and what doesn't work when it comes to tabu areas to manage fishing grounds.

Naisilisili shared the different types of tabu's, the advantages and challenges and his experience working with communities.

Hemo shared stories from a community perspective about maintaining a Marine Protected Area or tabu area for 30 plus years in his tikina and the challenges to ward off poachers from outside and within his own community.

A tabu area aims to create a safe space for fish to thrive, reproduce and hopefully, restock the tabu area, and in time, restock areas outside the tabu.
