The 99% Local Podcast

By Chris Green

Bringing stories of Middle Tennessee entrepreneurs, business owners, musicians, authors and other creators. #25 - Doug Smith | Author of [Un]Intentional: How Screens Secretly Shape Your Desires and How You Can Break Free

Doug Smith is a software developer, popular speaker, teacher, mentor, and author of the book, [Un]Intentional: How Screens Secretly Shape Your Desires and How You Can Break Free. As a software developer, Doug spent many years serving Fortune 500 companies, startups, universities and government agencies. From 2008 to 2016, Doug served as a Senior Developer on Dave Ramsey’s digital development team, where he played a role in building out Dave’s technology infrastructure. Doug is gratefully married to fellow author Lyneta, and the couple is blessed with four wonderful daughters.

In his book, Doug offers an insider’s perspective on the impact of technology, informed by his over two decades of web programming experience and a lifetime of bible study. [Un]Intentional shows how our obsession with screens often takes us—unintentionally—to places we regret. It reveals the way many apps, games, and videos are designed to entice us to make decisions and form harmful habits that profit the creators at our expense. Doug’s heart and passion is to help people recognize undiagnosed technology and screen addiction in their own lives, and to provide principles and practical insights for overcoming the disease.

Doug has been featured on both the Christian Television Network (CTN) and Moody Radio. Doug’s book has also received some nice recognition recently, by winning a Silver medal in the 2020 Illumination Book Awards for the Self-Help/Recovery category, as well as the Notable Book award at the Southern Christian Writer’s Conference Book Expo in the self-published nonfiction category.
