“Gettin’ Jiggy Wit the Jiggy Crayfish”

“Gettin’ Jiggy Wit the Jiggy Crayfish”

In this episode I talk about the underutilization of the crayfish in fly fishing. I came up with a pattern I called the Jiggy Crayfish and wanted to share it with you. Here is the recipe:

Hook: Lively Legz 320J Jig hook size 10

Bead: 4.0mm slotted diwn and dirty Tungsten bead in copper

Thread: 6/0 dark brown uni-thread

Tail: brown blood quill marabou

Antenna: Grizzly Micro Legs Fl. orange

Shell back: wild turkey tail feathers

Dubbing: your choice (dark olive hares ear plus was used today) I like dark hares ear the best though

Ribbing: utc copper wire size small

I typically dead drift these under my favorite nymphs and use them as an anchor fly, then strip them at bit on the end of my drift. The often hit when you start to lift at the end of the drift.

MIND THE REDD! Learning fall/winter wading practices to protect wild trout spawning beds.

MIND THE REDD! Learning fall/winter wading practices to protect wild trout spawning beds.

This is just a quick podcast on safe fall and winter wading practices to not disturb wild trout redds. Redds are easy to spot in the fall, but can become very camouflaged as fall rains can bring silt, and other debris that can hide the redd. I feel that often times minding redds and fishing over spawning wild trout are often ignored just to get a picture of a wild trout in spawning colors.  We really need to understand of the consequences of these actions, and make an effort to educate others on safe practices of fishing for trout during and after their spawn.

A great webpage to check out is www.mindtheredd.org. I briefly mention them in the podcast but their whole agenda is to help educate others on the importance of understanding redds and spawning wild trout. They do a great job at doing this. If you are new to the idea of redds and spawning wild trout please check out the Mind The Redd website and learn.

How To Safely Take Photos of Fish

How To Safely Take Photos of Fish

In this Episode I cover some tips and tricks that I use to safely take photos of the fish I catch on the fly. I feel this is a great chance for me to help new and seasoned anglers take better photos while also helping protect wild/native fish. These fish are very valuable and should be handled in such a way that you are caring more about the fish than the photo you capture. I hope you enjoy this episode and can use these tips to capture amazing shots of beautiful fish.
