G&R Episode 38: The Amazon is Burning w/ campaigner Pendle Marshall-Hallmark
In this episode, we talk with climate and finance campaigner Pendle  Marshall-Hallmark (@PendleTheWitch) of Amazon Watch (@amazonwatch) about  the fires raging in the Amazon rainforest.   Last year saw some of the worst fires in record for the region and this  year's fire season looks to be no better. The problem is made much worse  by the Bolsanaro government's deregulation of Brazilian environmental  protections. increased industry efforts at deforestation and the financing of it all by U.S. asset managers and banks like Blackrock and  JPMorgan Chase.   Pendle also talked with us about her experience doing human rights accompaniment in Colombia. And social and racial tensions in her hometown of Rochester NY. We also share few words and thoughts remembering scholar, author and  anarchist David Graeber who passed away suddenly on September 3rd.   CORRECTION: Scott incorrectly said  that Blackrock was privately held,  not publicly traded. It is in fact publicly traded.     Bio: Pendle Marshall-Hallmark is a Climate & Finance Campaigner at Amazon  Watch, an Oakland-based human rights and environmental advocacy  organization focused on protecting the Amazon rainforest and the rights  of Indigenous peoples. Prior to joining Amazon Watch Pendle lived in  Colombia for two years, where she accompanied Indigenous and campesino  activists resisting corporate, paramilitary and state-led invasions of  their lands. She has completed a Fulbright scholarship in Mexico City  exploring US-Latin American business relations, and previously worked as  a community organizer in Philadelphia around issues of immigration,  healthcare access and labor rights. In this episode, we’re speak with two Israeli activists and refuseniks  Amitai Ben- Abba (@amitaibenabba) and Atalya Ben-Abba about the current uprising happening against the Netanyahu government and the movement  refusing service in the Israeli army in protest of the occupation.  The  anti-Netanyahu movement, or the “Balfour struggle,” as it’s known in  Israel, has been out in the streets across the country and in front of  “Crime Minister” Benjamin Netanyahu’s homes for months. The Israeli left  has not only begun to see large numbers of people joining them and increased police violence against protestors, but also a convergence of  anti-austerity movements, the anti-occupation movement and people fed up  with the government’s corruption and bungling of the COVID-19 crisis.    We also talk with Atalya and Amitai about the film “Objector”  (@objectorfilm) which documents Atalya’s decision to refuse service in  the Israeli army, the “refusenik” movement of young Israelis resisting  military service and their family’s transformation as a result.  Atalya Ben-Abba is an Israeli conscientious objector who sat in prison  for 110 days in 2017 for refusing to serve in the Israeli army. After  volunteering to do civil service for two years at a shelter for homeless  youth, she now studies Sociology, Anthropology, and Philosophy at the  Hebrew University of Jerusalem and continues to be active in various  activist groups in Israel/Palestine.   Amitai Ben-Abba is a writer, filmmaker, and activist now based in Oakland, CA. Amitai is the writer and producer of the full-length documentary Objector about Atalya's refusal and their family's transformation as a result of her decision. This week, 55 years ago, the Watts Uprising in Los Angeles began amidst a traffic incident with a black motorist and the California Highway Patrol in the South Central neighborhood of the bustling city.  By the end of the week, 34 had been killed, hundreds injured, over $40 million in property damaged and destroyed, 16,000 national guardsmen and police deployed to quell the uprising and a new chapter in black radicalism began. G&R Episode 33: Portland in Revolt!
In this episode, we talk with Jay and Kay, two Portland street organizers, about the uprising that has shaken the city and garnered so much media attention.  In the two months since the murder of George Floyd, Portland has been out on the streets every night demanding justice and racial justice. Recently, the Trump administration attempted to crack down on protests in an unprecedented show of aggression by putting federal agents on the street, kidnapping protestors off the street and responding with mass violence. The entire city rose up against the federal government's intervention, prompting a pull back by the feds. But since then the Portland Police have continued the violence against protests.   We discuss with our guests the background of what's been happening, organizing and street action tactics, the courage of movements in Portland resisting the state every night, local journalists that have been getting the story out and how to support the continuing struggle.   You can support the PDX General Defense Committee legal defense and bail fund here:https://www.instagram.com/defensefundpdx/?hl=en  Read more:  What You Need To Know About The Battle of Portland: https://www.bellingcat.com/news/americas/2020/07/20/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-battle-of-portland/  Tools and Tactics in the Portland Protests: https://crimethinc.com/2020/08/03/tools-and-tactics-in-the-portland-protests-from-leaf-blowers-and-umbrellas-to-lasers-bubbles-and-balloons  When Rioting is Rational: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2015/01/when-rioting-is-rational-ferguson/   Are You An Anarchist? G&R Episode 32: Hiroshima and "Atomic Diplomacy," 75 Years Later
For years, large majorities of Americans have believed that the U.S. had to use the A-Bomb against Japan on August 6th, 1945 to end the war quickly and avoid a land war and thus save one-million American lives.  Scott and Bob discuss the use of the bomb, why it was used as a message to the Soviet Union and not a military necessity,  the chronology behind the development and deployment of atomic weapons, the U.S. public response to it, and the creation of a new history, a propaganda piece, regarding the use of the bomb.  The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima was vital in the development of the Cold War, the arms race, the military-industrial complex, and the National Security State.  Seventy-five years after the first atomic weapon was used by the U.S., it's still a highly-debated and important topic. G&R Episode 31: A Murder in Austin, w/ Anti-Police Brutality organizer Debbie Russell
We're Back!  Lots of has been happening while we've been in break, so we start August by talking with veteran Austin community organizer, anti-police brutality advocate and Austin Legal Guild volunteer Debbie Russell (@Debmocracy) about the murder of Garrett Foster this past week, killed by a right-wing agitator who was driving his car into the crowd of peaceful protestors.  The killer then drove off and later turned himself in to police but he was released and no charges have been filed. The Foster murder has received national attention and Debbie Russell and her comrades in Austin have played a major role in investigating  the killing and preparing to present evidence.    We also talked about some of the longer-term tensions between the Austin police and non-white communities, and the possibility of reform with new, progressive elected officials coming into office.  Despite the national uprising against police violence, even in "liberal" places like Austin, the cops have continued to assault people of color and protests that have emerged since the killing of George Floyd.   Read more about Austin police issues and the shooting of Garrett Foster here:  Council Mulls Radical Changes to Police Structure: https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2020-07-31/council-mulls-radical-changes-to-police-structure/  Mike Ramos, Javier Ambler cases won't go before a grand jury this year: https://www.kvue.com/article/news/local/javier-ambler-michael-ramos-grand-jury-delayed  Austin protesters clash with police in the wake of Garrett Foster's death: https://www.texastribune.org/2020/08/02/austin-protest-garrett-foster/ U.S. Army sergeant who shot Austin protester Garrett Foster posted tweets about retaliating against demonstrators: https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/31/daniel-perry-austin-protest-garrett-foster/  More from Austin:  Debbie on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/debmocracy   Hiram Live's channel covering protests in Austin: https://www.twitch.tv/imhiramg  Support Austin's protests: https://www.gofundme.com/f/Protectatxpros  Austin Gonzo (Debbie’s blog): https://austingonzo.blogspot.com/  Follow us at:  Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/GreenRedPodcast         Twitter:  https://twitter.com/PodcastGreenRed        Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/greenredpodcast/  Keep Green and Red Podcast Independent:  Patron:  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast    Green and Red's website:  https://greenandredpodcast.org/donate-to-green-and-red/  This is a Green and Red Podcast  production. G&R Episode 30: Racial Violence, the Camp Logan Mutiny, and Confederate Monuments w/ Professor Clayton Lust
Green & Red Podcast celebrates its 30th episode with our special guest, esteemed scholar and friend Professor Clayton Lust (@ClaytonLust)  from Houston Community College and Lone Star College, who has studied and written extensively about the Camp Logan Mutiny, a vital important yet unfortunately lesser-known historical episode where Houston Police and African American soldiers had a violent racial conflict in Houston in 1917.  Given current political conditions and a rising awareness of Black history and Black interactions with police, the events at Camp Logan offer great insight into the history of policing among African Americans.  We also talk about the reality behind southern monuments to the Confederacy, that they are not about "heritage" but white supremacy, and we talked about Reconstruction and the racial attitudes that continued to dominate American politics after the Civil War. G&R Episode 24: Why Immanuel Wallerstein Matters w/ filmmaker David Martinez
In  our latest episode, we talk with filmmaker David Martinez about his  film featuring sociologist and leftist thinker Immanuel Wallerstein. Immanuel  Wallerstein passed away in 2019, but is best known for his development  of an approach in sociology called World Systems Analysis. His  influence was particularly strong in the Global South, in fact the  story goes that half of the guests at his wedding were later  assassinated. There is also a building named for him in Chiapas, and he  once sat on a panel with Subcomandante Marcos. He was also a main  influence on Abdullah Ojalan and the Kurdish movement's recent shift to  the more libertarian left. In short, he was much more than an academic,  but someone who tried to use his intellectual work to change the world. David Martinez is a filmmaker, writer, and teacher originally from San Antonio, Texas, now living in San Francisco. He's also the co-host of the Hammer and Tongs podcast (https://bit.ly/2BYRb6k). G&R Episode 22: The Military vs. Donald J. Trump. Generals Tell Trump to "Stand Down!"
Today, Bob (@bobbuzzanco) and Scott (@sparki1969) talk about the recent public repudiation of Donald Trump's attempts to use the military against American citizens in pursuit of a racial war by ranking military officials, not just retired but active-duty as well. In an amazing two weeks, one of the more incredible developments has been the open resistance of military officials to Trump's attempts  to militarize American cities and likely kill protestors.  Starting  with retired Generals and Admirals and percolating into the dissent of  active-duty officers, the military, America's most respected  institution, has stood up to Trump and, even more, made a sharp  statement against racism and defended the right to protest. These people aren't radical and don't have the same interests as  protestors, but  have put the brakes on Trump, for the time being at  least.  They've also give people in the streets more legitimacy and  space.  They're not long-term allies necessarily, but they have helped  the millions who are rebelling right now. G&R Episode 21: "8 minutes, 46 seconds." The murder of George Floyd and uprisings in the USA, w/ Jeff Ordower
Today, Bob and Scott talk about the state of the U.S. as protests, riots, rebellions and large scale police violence are erupting in dozens of cities across the country.  All week, protests, riots and more have been happening in Minneapolis over the police murder of a black man named George Floyd. Now it has spread from coast to coast, and increasingly around the world, with real resistance (not the Democratic establishment led #resistance) against police and political leaders. We're joined by long time organizer Jeff Ordower (@moredower) to talk about this moment and where we go from here.   Bio: Jeff Ordower is a long time organizer in the movement. He has been an organizer for 25 years and got his start as a queer activist in college. He's worked on campaigns around labor, economic justice, climate and racial justice. There are too many groups to name. He lived and supported organizing in St. Louis in 2014 during the rebellion around the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. He is trying to live his best life as an itinerant organizer and spends a lot of his time thinking about sustained mass action. In this special Green and Red  Podcast, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tragic events of May  4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4  students and shot 9 others.  Students, who'd been told the war was  winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon  announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th.  At Kent State, a  working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and  other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam  protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent  response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent.  For  two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students.  On May 4th, the Guard,  unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet.  These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests.  The war had come home!  Scott and Bob, who's also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s  and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the  background to the protests, the official, violent response, the  aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were  killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning,  and lessons.  See  also, the Kent State Tribunal Organization, established by Laurel  Krause, sister of one of the students assassinated at Kent State that day; an interview with Alan Canfora, one of the survivors of the shootings, and also another interview here; The Kent State May 4th Poetry Collection; Denise Levertov, "The Day the Audience Walked Out on Me, and Why" ; a couple of well-known songs that came out of the tragedy, Neil Young, "Ohio" and Chrissie Hynde (who was a student at Kent State in 1970 and friends with two of the murdered students),  "Revolution";  Governor Rhodes press conference, May 3;  and Robert Buzzanco, Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life. G&R Episode 16: Shut It Down! Resistance in the Age of COVID-19 with Lisa Fithian!
In our latest episode with talk with long time direct action organizer Lisa Fithian. We talked about many of the issues confronting us right now, and how people are fighting back.   Lisa's been on the front lines for almost four decades, from fighting against  the Reagan attacks on Central  America, to helping organize workers, to fighting transnational institutions like the WTO and the World Bank, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, doing  Mutual Aid in New Orleans after Katrina, supporting Gaza and so many  other things. We  talked to her about the role of  mutual aid in resistance, and also the current wave of work stoppages  and wildcats, and the potential for mass  action at this critical time  in our lives. Importantly, we discussed how  these actions are being  done for the commons, not just for individuals.     Lisa's also just  published a memoir, "Shut it Down: Stories from a  Fierce, Loving  Resistance" and we discussed that too. G&R Episode 15: Mutual Aid in a Pandemic. NOLA Edition! With Jasmine Araujo from Southern Solidarity!
In this episode, Jasmine Araujo of Southern Solidarity joins us to discuss Mutual Aid in a  Pandemic, in New Orleans.  She and her crew have set up shop and they  feed 200 people a day, give them blankets, arrange for medical care, and  help when they get harassed by cops or passers-by.  She discusses the  origins of Southern Solidarity, their daily routine, and the way  COVID-19 has affected the homeless in New Orleans.  After that, Scott  and Bob talk a little about the importance of Mutual Aid and workers  actions. While the media is reporting the spectacle of little Nazis and  Confederates "protesting" at State Capitols, a far greater number of  people are staging workplace actions for better working conditions and  safety.   There's a lot going on here at the Green and Red Podcast!   For  more information, and ways to help out, check out: Fight Back News: New Orleans community unites in solidarity with large homeless population during pandemic lockdown  For more info, go to https://southernsolidarity.org,  Donate to Southern Solidarity at https://southernsolidarity.org/donate/ Bob Buzzanco latest:  "Death Cults, Wildcats, and Liberal Civility" As always, you can follow us at:     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GreenRedPodcast       Twitter: https://twitter.com/PodcastGreenRed      Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greenredpodcast/    Also, please become a Green and Red patron at  https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast

G&R Episode 13: Martin Luther King vs. LBJ! King's Radicalism and the Limits of the Liberal State
In this episode, Bob and Scott get into the politics of Martin Luther King and how he's WAY more radical than most people realize. This week is the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King (MLK).  Today, everyone from the Libertarian Party to the anti-abortion movement to tech companies in Silicon Valley trying to sell you their latest gadgets claim his legacy.  In truth, MLK fought and opposed "the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism (i.e. capitalism), and militarism" until the end of his life.  While many look at the surface levels of MLK's politics and legacy, Green and Red goes deep into the real substance of who he was.   Further reading and listening:  Bob Buzzanco: MLK for Sale? Next Green and Red Podcast features scott crow
Scott Parkin and I w.ere fortunate to have a great conversation with our  comrade and friend scott crow.  Scott is an inspiring organizer. When Katrina hit New Orleans, the authorities had  no concern for the people living there, so scott and other  community activists helped form the Common Ground Collective and got  people back on their feet. In the horrors of Katrina, it was one of the  rare bright spots.  Scott not only engages in the struggle but acts upon  what he calls the "emergency heart," the need to help others to create,  foster and sustain our community, our humanity.    And look scott up at https://www.scottcrow.org/

G&R Episode 7: Pandemic and Politics with Sarah Koster
This past week has been unprecedented. Coronavirus has become a global pandemic and the world is reeling.  At least 140,000 infected with 5,000 deaths in 133 countries. Global markets have been shaken with the New York Stock Exchange plummeting twice this past week. G&R Episode 6: Populism and the New Deal, Do Those Words Mean What You Think They Mean?
The world is in full blown panic around the COVID19 pandemic. The global economy is shaking.  Today, the stock market took its biggest dip since September 1987. Panic about the virus and jobs and business is kicking in.    During previous economic crashes, most notably the Panic of 1893 and the 1929 crash that launched the Great Depression, we saw moments emerge that initially challenged the ruling class. Both the populist movement of the 1890s, and social justice and labor movements of the 1930s led to a "thunder on the left" that terrified the ruling class. From William Jennings Bryan to Sinclair Lewis and Huey Long to Bernie Sanders, populist figures on the left are much more of a threat to Wall Street and the uber-rich than billionaire reality TV stars.   As a result, the rich always know how to turn bottom-up led movements into top-down reform that actually benefits the wealthy with social stability and new consumer markets  So, in this episode, Bob and Scott talk about the real meaning of Populism and the New Deal.   Plus a shout out to our three new patrons supporting Green and Red on Patreon.com.    And we close it out with a little Jefferson Airplane singing about how we're all in it together: "We are forces of chaos and anarchy, everything they say we are, we are, and we are very proud of ourselves.  Up against the wall Motherfuckers."   Thanks and stay safe out there!  Also check us out on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook!

It's Stupor Tuesday, and Scott and Bob are gonna dish dirt on Liberals.  Do you hate Liberals?  Why not?  Do you know what a liberal is?  If not, we'll tell you.  We talk about  the history of American liberalism starting with Woodrow Wilson, through  FDR, the creation of the National Security State and NSC-68, and liberal rhetoric about being the party of working people while really being bag boys for Wall Street and imperialists for mega-corporations.    We have a goal--we want to piss off at least 2/3 of the  Liberals we know, so help us by sharing this on FB, Twitter, Instagram,  and of course donating at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Stevie Wonder riffs on Liberals: We are amazed but not amused By all the things you say that you'll do Though much concerned but not involved With decisions that are made by you But we are sick and tired of hearing your song Tellin' how you are gonna change right from wrong 'Cause if you really want to hear our views You haven't done nothin'

G&R Episode 3: The Story of SHAC with Jake Conroy
In this episode, we're joined by long-time animal rights activist, designer, writer and all around trouble-maker Jake Conroy. Jake was part of the Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty campaign, or SHAC, that campaigned against notorious animal testing company Huntington Life Sciences. SHAC bankrupted Huntington multiple times and were successful in getting them de-listed from the New York Stock Exchange.  The campaign was so effective, the federal government prosecuted Jake and his co-defendants, known as the SHAC 7, as domestic terrorists. After a highly publicized case, the SHAC 7 were found guilty on all charges, including the controversial Animal Enterprise Protection Act (now called the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act) and sentenced to a variety of prison terms and a $1,000,001 restitution fine. Jake was sentenced to 48 months, which he served in 2 prisons in southern California. He was released in 2009. These days, you can see him sharing his view on many things, mostly related to the animal rights movement on his YouTube channel The Cranky Vegan. He has been most recently featured in the new documentary, The Animal People, about the SHAC’s case.  Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix. Directed by Cassandra Suchan (Rock The Bells) and Dennis Henry Hennelly (Bold Native).

G&R Episode 2: A conversation with Staughton Lynd
Welcome to the latest episode of Green and Red. A podcast about radical environmental and anti-capitalist politics. Brought to you by Bob Buzzanco and Scott Parkin. This episode welcomes renowned anti-war and civil rights activist, historian, author and lawyer Staughton Lynd.   Staughton Lynd has been one of the most important American Activists/Scholars from the mid-20th Century onward.  As a historian, he was one of the first prominent scholars associated with the "New Left" and he did pathbreaking work on the  colonial war of liberation against the British Empire, situating it not just as a fight over Home Rule, but also "who should rule at home," i.e. what type of class relations would exist in the new country.  Staughton was on the faculty at Spelman University where he and colleague Howard Zinn became active in the Civil Rights Movement (activity that cost Zinn his job there).  Staughton became head of the Mississippi Summer Freedom Education Project, organized by SNCC.  He then moved on to the faculty at Yale University, but that was short-lived.  He traveled to northern Vietnam in 1965 as part of an antiwar contingent and the Liberals at Yale fired him for his political activity.  After that he, and his wife, another acclaimed activist, Alice became lawyers specializing in Labor Law and Prison Reform.  The Lynds moved to Niles, Ohio (also Bob Buzzanco's hometown) where Staughton became one of the leaders of a 1977 movement to save Youngstown, Ohio steel mills from closing down.  He has been active in labor matters since and he and Alice also have defended death row prisoners and worked with military veterans on the issue of "moral injury." For more on Staughton, see, among others, his books Class Conflict, Slavery, and the United States Constitution: Ten Essays; Moral Injury & Nonviolent Resistance (with Alice Lynd); and The Fight Against Shutdowns: Youngstown's Steel Mill Closings.  There is also a god biogaphy of Staughton, Carl Mirra's The Admirable Radical: Staughton Lynd and Cold War Dissent, 1945–1970.  Staughton's Papers are archived at Kent State University: https://www.library.kent.edu/staughton-and-alice-lynd-papers.
