"Connection Through Craft" with Beatrice Valenzuela
Today we’re sitting down with Beatrice Valenzuela, stylist, designer and co-founder of Echo Park Craft Fair; which this coming weekend May 11th-12th 2019, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary - hence why this episode is being released a few days early...let's call it serendipity. This episode carries a lot. Because this lady just does…a lot. Originally from Mexico, she calls Los Angeles home, and spends her days immersed among makers, creation, craft, her family, and looks to design as an agent of education; building upon sustainable societal infrastructures both local and nonnative, whilst facilitating human connection as the center point to all. Meet the woman, mother, and wife whom our feet have come to adore for her sandals, our bodies for the silk dresses, and the Magpie in all of us for her jewelry. "Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual" with Carly Jensen
Today we’re sitting down with Carly Jensen, Massage Therapist, and founder of Liko Bodywork, where she addresses the bio-psycho-social-spiritual being through various structural integration, somatic, and mindfulness modalities. Do you remember the days where it was just you, your mum, and the kitchen - all to yourself. And on these occasions when the heaping loaves of homemade bread were running low, you’d take to the kitchen to revel in the process of helping her knead the dough. That’s the total vibe I got when talking to Carly. This Hawaiin-based goddess, a voice like caramel, depicted her therapeutic massage work with her clients in a way that all too closely resembled my childhood enthusiasm for kneading dough. Slow, meditative, intentional, you work out the kinks, you pay attention to the person’s skin quality (this is obviously as far as my bread making skills took me). Tuning into their breath, feeling their pulse; being in tandem with that person, being solely there for that person, whether this be their means to releasing something deeper, or the simple act of some well deserved self-care. Internal becomes external becomes internal. This episode really brings touch to the forefront. Human touch, an entire dialogue we seemed to have forgotten or want to ignore, and shoved under the rug to be quite frank, along with all of our fears and insecurities that this form of connection conjures up. Being entirely mindful towards those victimized by nonconsensual violations of their space and body, I am speaking to the broader extent to which our perspective of self, and the vulnerability we allow, reflects back upon a society starved of a language which, at birth, we could not have done without. To book a session with Carly you can go via her website Likobodywork.com. Her practice is based in Kauai, Hawaii.  In Hawaiin “Liko” means “to glisten as dew - to unfurl as new”. I don’t think anything else could have been more appropriate. This is “bio-psycho-social-spiritual” with Carly Jensen. "The Qi" with Lisa Li
Today we’re sitting down with Lisa Li, a woman after my own heart, founder of The Qi, bringing us organic whole flowers for our tea sipping, tonic concocting pleasures. Rose, Lotus, and Chrysanthemum. Single flowers with a multitude of benefits. The Qi is this overarching conception of something that, with beauty and grace, addresses this need for us to reconnect with our earth’s resources, with those around, ourselves; and yet, still manages to speak to our modern-day demand for efficiency. Harvested once a year in Western China, between 5AM-8AM so as to secure peak nutrients, essence, and aroma, Lisa is working with family-owned farms to share these little, but mighty blooms, so that we may share externally, care internally, and you know, kick back a little. Anais Nin said it best, “The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” This is “The Qi” with Lisa Li. "Middle Brainer" with Rachael Z Miller
She’s the most comfortable in the water albeit a little clumsy on land. If there’s one way to describe Rachael, it’d be this spitfire energy; which is ironic given her love for all things water. It got to a point where she had to make a choice between either sailing or swimming competitively, because obviously, she was doing both. With a hand in just about everything, a jack of all trades, she’s a prime example in that you can’t take anything at face value. In this case, surface value. Former olympic candidate, snow kite and windsurfing instructor, and the first in North America to offer ROV supported shipwreck tours, she’s the founder of nonprofit Rozalia Project and Cora Ball, acting as spokesperson for our oceans. Through technology, innovation, solutions-based research, STEM programs, and a recent expansion into products, she’s bridging that land-sea disconnect between us humans and our home. This is “Middle Brainer” with Rachael Z Miller. "Pamplemousse" with Danica Zheng
It’s weird how corporeality and the spirit are inextricably linked. Trying to carve out our own little space is this equilibrium of infusing the concrete-here-and-now with the slippery intangibility of the soul. It gets even weirder when we start thinking in terms of relationships,  jobs, and the utter technicalities of it all. Fashion designer and founder of Pamplemousse the label, Danica Zheng, recently made the announcement to give the brand a “clean” restart. She’s a mother who’s questioning the security of a world in which her child will grow up in, a designer who’s confronted the ethicality of the practice, and a person who’s looking to give a little more of herself, not in terms of the amount of pieces produced, collections picked up, or fashion weeks checked off the list, but rather what her designs could mean in terms of sustainability, ethicality, community, and her own spirit as a designer. I love this episode as it brings into question the true relationship we have with the constant need to consume, how we’re seeing this play out in the world around us, and on a deeper level, the way it’s making us feel. This is “Pamplemousse” with Danica Zheng. You can find Pamplemousse and Danica at: http://www.pamplemousseny.com/ https://www.instagram.com/pamplemousse_studio/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/danicazanica/?hl=en Please share your thoughts and show us some love by subscribing, or get in touch to be featured on the podcast! "Nature isn't Alternative" with Dr JJ Pursell
I received Dr. JJ Pursell’s book towards the end of last year, “The Woman’s Herbal Apothecary”. And you know, like so many of us out there that have come to find our own sense of well-being and wellness practice, by way of good or bad…it probably took a whole lot of research, uncertainty, fear, and self compassion. Staring the pharmaceutical industry in the face, their credentials, authenticated studies, and their overall monopoly on our health takes courage. Especially when you’re coming from place of ill health. Though there may be so much we don’t know, we do know our symptoms. And I love Dr. JJ for having touched on this, especially in correlation to the times. We’re looking to our symptoms, not simply as an isolated ailment, but as a part of the whole human system and what’s really going on there.  Within this episode specifically, she opens up the dialogue to plant medicine, the cultivation of ones own herbal practice, and the maintaining of a legal herbal business; the technicalities of which speak to not only where we find ourselves within the current health system, but the power of choice that we carry. Dr. JJ is a Naturopathic Doctor, Acupuncturist, Herbalist, Business owner, farmer, wife, mother, and a total badass.  This is “Nature isn’t Alternative” with Dr. JJ Pursell. "Blood, Sweat, and Chocolate" with Devon Porrino
Chocolate, menstrual cycle…menstrual cycle, chocolate. An equation we’re all too familiar with, but do we know why? Devon Porrino, founder of Moon Cycle Bakery, is bringing you a monthly-subscription based service that literally delivers baked goods to sustain, and support you, during your cycle. No longer is the cookie simply just a cookie. Anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, vitamin c packed, iron absorption, magnesium replenishing, antioxidant administrating, pms symptoms soothing. Even if you don’t know what any of this means, Devon and her team are directing the conversation, and in some cases, even initiating it, away from the age-old cramps, eye-rolls, and general drag we associate with the menstrual cycle - to one where, in knowing how our bodies work, we thrive throughout the entire month, we capitalize on the different phases of our body, and rather than retract, we step into ourselves, cookie in hand. "New York to Tokyo" with Lindsay Arakawa
Versed in the ways of the interwebs, Lindsay Arakawa is the former Creative Social Media Strategist of Refinery29 where she oversaw creative strategy and production for social media accounts @refinery29 and @29rooms. We’re in this transitional period where, not only are the constructs encompassing career being redefined, but the very ways in which we associate ourselves with said career. Doing a complete 180, Lindsay’s found herself in the heart of Tokyo, teaching English, building upon her freelance portfolio, and allowing for creative passions to further unfold. There’s such beauty in this conversation in that it’s captured someone in a moment of realignment with themselves, when so often all that is shown of one’s journey is the end result. Here’s to guts, glory, and this dauntless lady whom I am very excited to have on as our first guest of the new year!!! This is “New York to Tokyo” with Lindsay Arakawa. "Just Mushrooms" with Tonya Papanikolov
Today we're sitting down with Holistic Nutritionist, speaker, functional foods recipe developer, and the mind behind The Well Woman and Rainbo, her recently launched brainchild, “optimizing health and open minds with medicinal mushrooms" AKA Tonya Papanikolov!! In advocating for her own health, paired with this keenness for knowledge, she’s reached a place where, through community and her own platforms, she’s providing and contributing to this ever-growing compassion and comprehension we have in regards to the self. Mind, body, and spirit. It’s people such as Tonya, who, through actually having acted as her own guinea pig at times, are providing accessible resources and knowledge within an industry that would very well seek to undermine you in both what you’re consuming, and your expenditure on said product. Feast your ears, this is "Just Mushrooms" with Tonya Papanikolov. "You Can Always Add Your Two Cents To Muff" with Ellen Freeman & Sharada Tolton
Today we’re sitting down with freelance writer and deputy editor of Broccoli Magazine, Ellen Freeman, as well as Sharada Tolton - graphic designer, product photographer, and art educator for persons with disabilities. I initially approached Ellen on the basis of discussing her written work, and her current position at Broccoli Magazine, but it soon turned into a trio convo that, serendipitously, has come out the other end in what I can only describe as an ode to friendship, and the ways in which their’s supports them on a personal and professional level. What started out as a mutual disinterest in their peer’s gusto for Biology, not to mention Sharada’s innate styling of Dungarees, has led to the eventual co-founding of Muff, “a bi-annual magazine of feminism and esoterics.” I hope you lend us an ear as, once again, the friendship honed between ladies shows to be one of connection, collaboration, and sisterhood. "This Fiber Journey" with Rachel Rutt
Today we’re sitting down with Artist, Singer, Sustainability Advocate and Model, Rachel Rutt. Speaking to her individuality, Rachel brings together this understanding and curiosity, traversing various forms of expression that seek to delineate connectivity, community, and consciousness. Speaking to her overall message, it’s to do more. Her work within the artisanal crafts such as weaving, knitting, and embroidery, paired with a background in the fashion industry as a model, has her straddled between generations both young and old. Advocating ethicality, sustainability, and a shift towards the Slow movement, she’s allowed for these to naturally take place within her own pursuits. Touching on, that perhaps, rather than the individual artist with a singular vision, we’re undergoing experiences and creating as a collective people, synchronously addressing and connecting on a level unbeknownst to us. PART 2 " When Women Come Together " with Cynthia Ritsma
Picking up from where we left off, this is Part 2 of a two part episode with Communications Consultant, Content Creator and founder of House of Notoire, Cynthia Ritsma. Accommodation, promotion, speakers, activities, the whole shebang. A retreat is no joke. And all within a matter of four months. Somehow, some way, this lady pulled it off. Today, the global sisterhood, House of Notoire, functions on a retreats-basis for women, so if your office environment is starting to feel a little drab, she’s got you covered. But, I am getting ahead of myself, before Cynthia took House of Notoire global, she worked in Communications, doing both time within the Southeast Asian, as well as the European luxury market. Takeaway, yes I want my personal and professional life to be this exotic highlight reel, but there are some arduous roadblocks to living and working abroad, especially when you throw “freelance” into the mix. PART 1 "Business Partner Breakups" with Cynthia Ritsma
Today we’re sitting down with Communications Consultant, Content Creator and founder of House of Notoire, Cynthia Ritsma. Cynthia is definitely someone you want in your corner. Good femme vibes, a total doer, and the mind behind House of Notoire, a retreats-based initiative breaking down borders in order to facilitate spaces in which women, globally, can come together and really be in their power. Aside from instigating a global sisterhood, you know, no biggie - we also broach the subject of business partner breakups and how being an only child, whilst calling places such as Pakistan and Singapore home, might have seen her outgrow her barbies a little earlier than most. This is part one of a two part episode available on Apple Podcasts and the Anchor app. Ladies and, I hope gents, I give you Cynthia Ritsma⚡️ You can find House of Notoire and more of Cynthia at: http://www.houseofnotoire.com/ https://www.instagram.com/houseofnotoire/ https://cynthiaritsma.com/ Please share your thoughts and show us some love by subscribing, or get in touch to be featured on the podcast! "Superpowers" with Meghan Duffy
Today we’re sitting down with Career Coach, Meghan Duffy. If there’s anyone I’d want around to do some adult-handholding, it’d be Meghan Duffy. How can one retain a sense of self when positively reinforcing and facilitating others is your passion, but also your bread and butter? INFJ’s can you relate!? In this episode, we get a much-appreciated earful on Meghan’s pilgrimage from being a Camp Counselor in Turkey to working at a tech startup as Chief of Staff and how, without any formal training, she found herself navigating the tech sphere. Sneak peek, she loves cheese, Corgis and openly uses the word “superpowers” within the workplace. "A Little Woo Woo" with Driadonna Roland
Today we’re sitting down with Writer, Editor and Producer, Driadonna Roland. Too many times have we associated the act of getting to know oneself to be that of a rather unfavorable position to be in. If I don’t already have a grip on my truest self, then how is who I am and what I do valid? “Figuring it out”, a daunting little phrase when you’re the subject in question, but in listening to Driadonna, you might start to think a little differently about taking yourself out on that date. In a convergence between religion, gut instinct and therapy, this lady takes it in stride, all whilst armed with a loyalty to herself, a bold lip, and a zest for all that is to come. "Chic Freud" with Kate Rosenberg
Today we’re sitting down with Artist and Psychotherapist, Kate Rosenberg. Spoiler alert, Kate’s spirit animal is the deer, and that’s exactly how she comes off as. Undisturbed and gentle in her being, we discuss how her experience with illness might have simultaneously served as the door through which she found an environment in which she was comfortable. Looking to pursue healing in the form of therapy, she applied to Pratt’s Expressive Therapy Program and, today, unites her work in Expressive and Psychodynamic therapy with her background in the arts, as well as pulling from Somatic, Play, Mindfulness, Humanistic, and Attachment-based theories. *breathe break* She’s also currently delving into Shamanism, offering clients a journey through which they come to recognize their own spirit and ally animals. Voicing our opinions on therapy as a legitimate form of self-maintenance, and whether we, independently, are capable of breaking patterns of a self-destructive nature, or if seeking ex

"It's An Asset" with Fran Meneses
Today we’re sitting down with Illustrator and Youtuber, Fran Meneses. Our sensitivities and doubts are unrelenting in their claim for our thoughts and time, Fran, during which, acknowledges this all openly. Finding a place on Youtube, her content touches on the varying degrees of being an artist and general human being simply finding their way in the world. And yes, there are sketchbook tours and stationery hauls and PENS - what more could one ask for!? Whether you’re watching Fran’s videos, or snuggled in bed with her *ehem* latest graphic novel “About To Leave”, they’re all expressions of someone who’s gone after their dreams, who invites you to do the same, and who’s created a space in which we might not feel so alone in doing so. We talk about how having a prominent online following puts you in the position of being a “role model”, and how this goes hand-in-hand with the imposter syndrome of being self-made. "The Soul of The Sole" with Lauren Brinkers
Today we’re sitting down with Brooklyn based shoe designer, Lauren Brinkers. Conversing with Lauren instilled in me a sense of contentedness towards the unknowing of the future. At one point she references Rebecca Solnit, author of “A Field Guide To Getting Lost”, in that it is within the unplanned that we find our intentions. It is with this mindset that Lauren pursued her zeal for shoemaking, becoming a nurse as a means to support this passion and crossing oceans to further cultivate her skill. Listen in as we touch on scaling your business whilst preserving craft, as well as maintaining in-house production, to finding your place within an already niche community.
