52. Hayla Folden, Covid-19 Vaccine Representative

My focus this week is on the available COVID-19 vaccines available here in Troup County. I’ve brought in District 4 Public Health representative, Hayla Folden to discuss the various vaccines and their side effects, efficacy and answer your questions.

I was very appreciative that Hayla sat down to speak with me and I hope you find the interview informative and engaging!

51. Kevin Littlefield, Chairman of the Troup Democratic Party

This week’s interview gets heavily political as I interview Kevin Littlefield, the Chairman of the Troup Democratic Party and a member of the State Committee for the Democratic Party. He is also a veteran of the Iraq War. We talk about both the Chairman position and his service in the army during the war throughout the interview. As always, I hope you enjoy listening.

49. Casey Duffield of The Foundation for Casey’s Cure

49. Casey Duffield of The Foundation for Casey’s Cure

The episode this week has a very special guest: Casey Duffield of The Foundation for Casey’s Cure (www.caseys-cure.org). I first met Casey when she moved to GA. The friend she talks about in the interview was actually my next door neighbor at the time. Her son sat with Alastair and I while my wife taught Art Appreciation at West GA Tech on Tuesday nights when she was diagnosed. Casey and I have history.

I didn’t consider interviewing her, however, until I saw the Casey’s Cure float in the LaGrange Christmas Parade. From that point it was just a matter of reaching out and setting it up.

In this interview Casey talks about the darkness of being diagnosed with the same disease that took her father, the hope of finding a cure and her love of her newfound home of LaGrange.

I hope that you enjoy listening as much as we had doing the interview.

47. Rev. R. Allen Pruitt of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (RERELEASE)

RERELEASE: My interview this week is the Reverend Allen Pruitt of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on North Greenwood St in LaGrange, just outside of downtown. The interview was fun and lighthearted. He goes into how he made a potato gun and how he and his wife didn’t hit it off the first time they met. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed doing it.

45. Representative Bob Trammell

45. Representative Bob Trammell

My interview this week has been featured in your mailbox and on your tv for the last campaign season. He’s State Representative, Bob Trammell. Bob hails from Luthersville, Georgia but has his office in LaGrange and represents much of LaGrange in the State Assembly. Thus, I thought it would be good to sit down and pick his brain and figure out what he’s all about.

Our interview covers topics as diverse as his role in the State Assembly, how long he’s served, his role as a father at home, his favorite memory of LaGrange and which part of the chicken is the finger.

I had a lot of fun with this high profile interview and hope you enjoy listening.

44. Leon Childs Jr., Executive Director of the A.G.C.A.O.

My interview this week is Leon Childs Jr, Executive Direct of the A.G.C.A.O. The Adaptive Growth and Cultural Organization. He dedicates he and his family’s lives to the mentoring and academic advancement of disadvantaged youth.

He shares in the interview about his past, present and future vision for the program. He also dishes on how he leveraged donations into tutors and other creative ways that he’s drummed up funding since launching the program in 2015.

I’ll stop there so as to not steal all the thunder from the interview. This week’s a real slam banger. Hope you enjoy the ride.

43. Ben Wills of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange

43. Ben Wills of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange

This week’s interview is Associate Minister at the First United Methodist Church in LaGrange, Ben Wills. Ben talks about his brief time in LaGrange and how he’s adapted to living in LaGrange. He talks about the ordination process, per my request. And doing ministry post-coronavirus. Overall it was a fun interview.

(Florrie suggested I name it the “mcguiver” episode bc my phone died midway through one of the questions and we had to juryrig something to finish the interview. We finished ahead of time without issue.)

42. April Ross of BeeTV

42. April Ross of BeeTV

This week’s interview is something new. I interview fellow media mogul, Ms. BeeTV April Ross. My interview with April extends from her time at The University of Alabama at Montgomery to finding an unexpected opportunity along the side of the road and a career spiraling out of that happenstance opportunity. We also discuss what April loves about her hometown of LaGrange, Georgia. I hope you’ll join us as we venture on through the diverse community here in LaGrange.

41. Anthony Talley of $1 Thursday’s/ Get Fed/ United Leaders of Georgia

This week’s interview is straight from the heart. This week I interview Anthony Talley, Mr. $1 Thursday, Mr. Get Fed with his partner and 1/4 of the United Leaders of Georgia. He stays busy. He just finished handing out 1,400 pre-loaded backpacks full of school supplies, for free, with the AGAOC at Hope Academy over the weekend. The backpacks went in a little over 2 hours! We sat down and talked for about an hour. Our conversation went from what $1 Thursday is, his time working at Charlie Joseph’s, his concept of #LevelUp that he’s popularized, and a variety of other topics. The man’s story is truly inspirational. I know I was moved and I hope that you will be

40. Al Brannon of The Marketplace on Bull St.

This week’s interview is Al Brannon, co-owner and manager of The Marketplace on the corner of Bull and Vernon st’s. My interview with Al is about 30 minutes in length and covers his time with antiques, his history with LaGrange and what he does in the community outside of running his store. It was great to finally sit down with Al, as I’ve been looking forward to it since talking to him about it in March. I hope that you enjoy the interview!

39. Chris Hagebak of 809 Gallery of Art

39. Chris Hagebak of 809 Gallery of Art

This week’s interview is Chris Hagebak of 809 Gallery of Art and also is an internationally known artist. The interview stretches from his childhood in northern Michigan, where he lost a finger in a lawnmower accident, to learning ping pong from President Jimmy Carter when he was 10. Chris’ stories border on being too big to be true but he is legit and the real deal. And just when you think the stories can’t get any better he drops another one that is even bigger than the one prior. It’s uncanny.

38. Daniel Evans of the LaGrange Daily News

38. Daniel Evans of the LaGrange Daily News

My guest this week is Daniel Evans, writer, editor-in-Chief, publisher and general guy in charge at The LaGrange Daily News, here in LaGrange, and the Valley Times News, over in Valley, Alabama. Daniel sat down and talked with me over the phone for about 35 minutes this Father’s Day weekend about the newspaper business, and more importantly the LaGrange paper’s recent articles about COVID-19 and Troup county’s meteoric rise to the top of multiple New York Times lists for COVID-19 ‘hot spots.’ We also discuss the efficacy of mask wearing, if you’re still on the fence about that issue.

I then take a lighter note and, after the break, take a note of how he came to LaGrange, GA from Selma, AL 3 years ago with a wife who was 8 months pregnant. That created some stories I’m sure you’ll want to hear.

My guest this week is Dr. John A. Tures, political science professor at LaGrange College. 36. Jeremy Bolt, candidate for Troup County Sheriff

This week’s interview is candidate for Troup County Sheriff, Jeremy Bolt. Jeremy sat down with me for about 45 minutes and chatted about the odds and ends of the office of Sheriff, including commenting on the lack of driver’s education at Troup High and Black Lives Matter. I won’t sensationalize the interview, but he gives his thoughts on each and much more.

I was surprised by this interview. Jeremy Bolt sought me out for this interview and I’m glad that he did. Had he not I don’t think I’d have given him the second thought I now am giving him. I’m glad for this interview and I think you’ll enjoy listening to it. At least that’s my hope.

35. Kyle Lovejoy, candidate for State Court Judge for Troup County

35. Kyle Lovejoy, candidate for State Court Judge for Troup County

This week’s interview is lawyer, assistant solicitor and candidate for state judge, Kyle Lovejoy. Kyle was kind enough to sit down with me in person for a second time after our first attempt to do the interview flopped. We chatted for about 40 minutes about his time as assistant solicitor, his love of LaGrange and how he would be the superhero Captain Average.

It was a fun interview and I was honestly glad to do it twice just because I got to spend more time talking with Kyle. He’s a good guy and I hope that comes through in the interview.

34. Ferrell Blair, candidate for Troup County School Board, District 2

34. Ferrell Blair, candidate for Troup County School Board, District 2

This week I decided to get political. For the next few weeks we will be interviewing political candidates for public office in and around LaGrange. Each week the podcast will focus on a different candidate and do a bit of a deep dive into what “makes them tick.”

To that end, I invited Ferrell Blair to speak with me for this week’s interview. He sat down and spoke with me for about 30 minutes. Our conversation went through the usual topics you’d expect of someone running for public office but we also spent time talking about his farming and real estate ventures, advice for future farmers and real estate developers, as well as the best cut of steak. You have to listen to the whole interview if you want to know the answer we agree upon.

Overall, and I feel like I say this every week, the interview was a lot of fun and it seemed like it was over as soon as it had just begun!

So I’ll get to the interview so you can hear more about Ferrell Blair, candidate for School Board in District 2 of Troup County.

33. AJ King of KIA of LaGrange

33. AJ King of KIA of LaGrange

So Florrie and I have purchased 2 cars in the 10+ years we’ve lived in LaGrange. A Kia Soul from the local Toyota dealership and, because that car was so reliable, we went to the local KIA dealership for our second car when we decided that driving with a car seat in my pickup truck wasn’t a wise idea. In the purchasing process, we met AJ King. He was very friendly and helped put us into a KIA sorento that we’ve been very happy with since we purchased it. But since then I’ve kinda kept an eye on AJ’s social media profiles. Not in a stalker way, just in a curious way. To see what he’s doing now. I’ve even recommended to my nephew that sells cars in Florida to check out AJ and watch what he does because he’s a master at breaking down the wall that people approach car buying with. So, I had to have AJ on my podcast about interesting people of LaGrange.... Ok, though I do have an axe to grind.... At the close of the interview, I ask AJ “Beatles or Rolling Stones?” because you can really tell a lot about a person by how they answer that question. If they say “Beatles,” with informed confidence and lean toward the later stuff it tells you that they have hippie sympathies. If they say the same but lean towards the earlier works they have a bit more of a conservative bend to their musical tastes. If they answer “Rolling Stones,” they like a more aggressive sound and therefore like more blues and, dare I say sexual undertone in their music. If they don’t have a strong opinion either way, then that tells you something about the person too. The question is deceptively telling for its simplicity. That’s what made AJ’s answer and subsequent explanation so frustrating. It was so hard not to hijack the conversation and make it about how I used to teach the History of Rock & Roll. I chose to not even bring it up because it would’ve been shoehorning it into the conversation unnaturally. I agree completely with him about the Beatles role in the history of rock, though I think one could trace it even further back had they wanted to. There’s a case to be made that African American blues artists such as Robert Johnson are responsible for all music that came after. But, if you’re looking for one seminal event, the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963 changed the musical landscape forever. This will all make sense once you listen to the interview. AJ and I had a lot of fun. He’s a fun guy tho, so that was no surprise. I was surprised to hear about his side hustles though. I thought he was just a car salesman with a good social media presence. ...and his Wild Safari stories cracked me up. I think those were my favorite part of the interview. Overall, though, this was a good interview. We had a lot of fun and I got to learn a lot of things that I didn’t know about both AJ and KIA of LaGrange. So win/win.

32. Taylor Kravtin

32. Taylor Kravtin

This week’s interview is with photographer/ videographer, Taylor Kravtin. It was recorded two weekends ago, right after governor kemp lifted the stay-at-home order and started lifting the prohibition on certain businesses. We joke a bit about it throughout the interview.

The interview itself was lighthearted and Taylor’s youthful energy permeates nearly every minute. I think that gives a fresh perspective on things and brings a new perspective to the podcast.

Hearing Taylor talk about watching YouTube in middle school made me feel ridiculously old, but that’s not bad. It’s just a natural consequence of aging. I’m sure many of you listening roll your eyes at some of the things I talk about. That was probably my biggest take away from this interview: we all get older and that’s ok.

Taylor never discussed aging. He just went on about his passions and his profession. The existentialism was purely my own, but I think many of you will resonate with what I’m talking about as you listen to the interview.

Taylor is a phenomenal local photographer I ran across on Instagram and I was pleased to get him on the show.

31. Dean Brian Carlisle of LaGrange College

31. Dean Brian Carlisle of LaGrange College

My interview this week is Vice President and Dean of Students at LaGrange College, Brian Carlisle. Dean Carlisle discusses his time at LaGrange College, his love of travel and his passion for the foster care system.

He actually expounds on his time as a foster parent and the great need for foster parents, especially for older teens.

As a related side note, we recorded this back in March...before the COVID-19 panic. So that was the context that he declared he was heading to an “adoption party” the upcoming weekend. It’s a small thing, but I just wanted to clarify.

Overall, it was an enlightening and inspirational interview. I even passed along the dean’s kind words about Chaplain Adam Roberts (my first guest on the podcast) the afternoon after I recorded it. He was flattered. I believe his words were “Aww, shucks.”

This is yet another light behind the curtain of a rags to riches story. His story is one of a kid who grew up poor and in a trailer park and became the Vice President of a College through a lot of hard work (and I’m sure a little bit of luck). I hope you’re as motivated by this interview as I was

30. Andrew Caraway of Callaway High Radio

30. Andrew Caraway of Callaway High Radio

My interview this week is Andrew Caraway, Callaway High School’s Radio Announcer. He also hosts a weekly podcast called West Georgia Football Podcast on SoundCloud. He talks about his responsibilities in those roles as well as elaborates on his favorite parts of LaGrange and his highlights about growing up here since moving in as a child.

Overall, it was a fun interview and a good presentation considering the distance setting. It was my first full-length interview in the ‘coronavirus era’ and I thought it went rather well, I hope you’ll agree.

29. The Hand Sanitizer Episode

Today is the “Hand Sanitizer” episode, where I talk with two breweries that have creatively retooled to meet the vast public need for hand sanitizer in different ways.

The first interview is with Michael Denehey of Chatabrewchee Southern Brewhouse in Columbus, GA.

The second interview is with Dr. Tripp Morgan of Pretoria Fields Collective in Albany, GA.

28. Curtis Brown Jr. of BTC Brands

28. Curtis Brown Jr. of BTC Brands

My interview this week is with Curtis Brown Jr, self-proclaimed “entrepreneurial evangelist.”

Curtis is the embodiment of the word “hustle.” He’s got so many irons in the fire that I could hardly keep up or keep them straight during our conversation. I managed to though.

Curtis doesn’t just work really hard though, he’s also very involved in the community. He discusses his role in numerous boards throughout the community. Curtis Is dedicated through and through.

Curtis brown Jr. may have been the busiest man that I have ever interviewed, but he is also the most devoted to his community.

27. Amy Fenn of Section 4 of GA Department of Public Health

27. Amy Fenn of Section 4 of GA Department of Public Health

My guest this week is Assistant Director of Nursing for Section 4 of GA Department of Public Health, Amy Fenn. Amy received her Associates Degree in Nursing from LaGrange College and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Columbus State University. Amy has worked with District 4 for twenty- three years. She has served as Assistant Director of Nursing since 2010 and is certified in Public Health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. She also serves as an accreditation site visitor for the Public Health Accreditation Board. In short, she knows her stuff.

Amy was gracious enough to dish to the listeners of Hey, LaGrange! the facts about the COVID-19 pandemic and Governor Kemp’s recent shelter-in-place edict. The interview extends from the well-worn territory of facts about the caronavirus, to the local implications, to suggestions for navigating the Governor’s shelter-in-place guidelines.

Now, as a bit of warning, this was a phone interview...so it’s a bit harder to listen to than normal. But I am confident that my listeners were willing to overlook the quality issues because of the immediacy of the information.

26. Bethany Headrick of Hillside Montessori of LaGrange

26. Bethany Headrick of Hillside Montessori of LaGrange

My interview this week is with Bethany Headrick, Head of School for Hillside Montosorri school of LaGrange. The interview itself was somewhat as expected, but Bethany did tell about the new building plans and her favorite children’s book, per our listener questions.

Regarding Bethan, she is a product of Montessori education through and through. Having gone to a Montessori preschool and a boarding school in Asheville, NC for a big part of her education, she knows Montessori and wants to bring that to the LaGrange community. Her vision is that every student has an opportunity for a hands-on, experiential education.

Having started with only 12 students in 2012 and now having 70 just 8 years later, that speaks of the meteoric rise of the school and the dedication of its staff and faculty.

Bethany also dished on her favorites from around LaGrange, but I’ll not spoil the interview any further though.

25. Jessica Jarvholm of Piney Woods Farm

25. Jessica Jarvholm of Piney Woods Farm

This week I interview Jessica Jarvholm, executive director for Piney Woods Farm out on West Point Rd. The property was deceptively large. It was masked from the road. It looked like just a gated house, but once you were inside there was a sprawling compound of sorts, with gardens, buildings, various structures and all sorts of animals.

The interview itself was enlightening. Jessica has only been back in LaGrange for two years, despite growing up here. But in those two years she’s accomplished a LOT. The farm is booming and growing even more. She talks about her 5 year plan for the farm in the interview. She also talks about growing up in LaGrange and the pleasure of returning all these years later.

It was a lot of fun to interview Jessica, so I hope that fun comes through in the interview. I’ll let you decide whether or not it did.

24. Taylor Duncan of Alternative Baseball

24. Taylor Duncan of Alternative Baseball

So this was the first time in 29 interviews that I had to do one by phone. I’ll be honest: it wasn’t great. The sound quality was poor and I don’t like not being able to see the person across from me. I’m not sure if I’m going to do this again, risk infection by venturing into the wild or just wait out the virus altogether. We will have to see.

This week’s interview is Taylor Duncan of Alternative Baseball. Taylor is a TEDx speaker and is on the autism spectrum. He is very high-functioning, however. This is in contrast to Dale Jackson’s son Collin, who was discussed in episode 18, who is non-verbal and low-functioning. Because autism is a spectrum you have a variety of abilities and capabilities on it.

Taylor started a baseball league for individuals that are differently abled because of his experiences being excluded from team sports.

He lives in Dallas, GA but has a grant to bring a team to LaGrange. That is what we discuss. Our interview ventures from who he is and what Alternative Baseball is all about, to the structure of the teams and their funding. We close with the usual random questions for fun.

Again, I apologize for the sound quality. I wanted to get this interview, but didn’t know when I’d be able to get it if I do it by phone now or in the near future

23. JT Marsh of Redemption Tattoo, Piercing & Beauty Parlor

23. JT Marsh of Redemption Tattoo, Piercing & Beauty Parlor

This week’s interview is JT Marsh co-owner and chief tattooist of Redemption Tattoo here in LaGrange. My interview with JT was a bit brief but not short on content. My highlight of the interview was finding out the age that JT started his apprenticeship and how he got there every day. I won’t spoil the surprise any more than I have already tho.

This was a non-traditional interview for the podcast. But that’s what Hey, LaGrange! is all about: unearthing the stories of regular folks with the hopes of discovering a shared humanity contained therein.

As a side note: you’ll notice a distinct buzzing in the background throughout most of the interview. That was the lights in the tattoo shop warming up and there was nothing that I could do about it. I apologize for the background noise though.

22. Azalea Storytelling Festival

22. Azalea Storytelling Festival

This week’s episode comes from the Azalea Storytelling Festival. As an official partner of the festival I am glad to have recorded part of the presentation. Specifically, from the first session on Sunday morning. The one that was free and open to the public.
The recordings start with about 5 minutes of the Dulcimer Troupers, followed by Michael Reno Harrell, followed by Bil Lepp. Those 3 are followed by Kim Weitkamp. Then the podcast closes with Andy Offutt Irwin.

Each storyteller is distinct from the other and unique unto themself. Each has his or her own style, rhythm and flow.

I was incredibly impressed by each teller and can’t wait until next year. I even went out of my way and purchased Bil Lepp’s book “The Princess and the Pickup” but forgot to get him to sign it! Hopefully, he will listen to this and reach out and replace the one I bought with a copy dedicated to my children. Unlikely, but one can hope, no?

If you’re interested in just skipping past the Dulcimer Troupers, the music presentation is 5 minutes and 47 seconds long (you’re welcome). So on that note I’ll get to the stories and music.

21. Bil Lepp of the Azalea Storytelling Festival

21. Bil Lepp of the Azalea Storytelling Festival

Hey, LaGrange!... My interview this week is another Azalea Storytelling Festival storyteller. His name is Bil Lepp. Bil hails from West Virginia and is an ex-Methodist minister. However, he’s a minister in the same way John Green was an episcopal chaplain. It was just for a short time, and he was completely unordained.

Lepp also won a lying competition. Shocking, I know right! I won’t steal any more of Bill’s thunder though.

This week’s interview is VERY short. The shortest I’ve done yet. Both Bill and I were pressed for time so we had to snap it out quick.

I did include an excerpt of his tall tale from the lunch at the First Methodist Church for your listening pleasure and amusement.

20. Michael Reno Harrell of the Azalea Storytelling Festival

20. Michael Reno Harrell of the Azalea Storytelling Festival

Hey, LaGrange!... This week’s interview is an extension of my partnership with LaGrange’s 24th annual Azalea Storytelling Festival. I interview singer/ storyteller Michael Reno Harrell from western North Carolina, in town for the ASF. The interview took place Monday night before his concert at Pure Life Studios.

The interview itself was lighthearted and funny. He deadpanned a lot of jokes that I didn’t realize until I was editing. Regardless, it was a fun interview.

I tried to keep it short to respect his time setting up. Because of that though I’ve included a song from the concert at the end of the podcast, after the break.

19. Jacob Krzysiak of the MA program in Philanthropy and Development at LaGrange College

19. Jacob Krzysiak of the MA program in Philanthropy and Development at LaGrange College

Hey, LaGrange!... So last night was kinda weird. I got a message on insta from a fan who wanted to meet up and talk about my transition from an “educator to a storyteller.” He happened to be 1/2 of the brains behind Humans of LaGrange, so I obliged.

Never being one to miss an opportunity, I recorded the conversation. I intended it to be me interviewing a random LaGrange citizen for the first time in the history of the podcast, but it turned into something entirely different.

After a brief introduction, I transitioned over to him because he wanted to ask me some questions and I never got control of the interview back!

Obviously, I’m ok with it or you wouldn’t be hearing about it right now. I’ve often wondered what would happen if I was interviewed and didn’t have a written script in front of me, like I do right now.

It turns out I repeat myself a lot. I liken it to a car stuck in the mud, rolling back and forth in the rut to get out. I need to sometimes repeat myself a few times to get my idea out. I’ve been assured it’s a common feature among survivors of traumatic brain injuries.

So, I learned that I can do an interview. I learned that my charisma is somewhat coming back, with practice of course. And I learned that Hey, LaGrange! has a dedicated fan base. I’m excited for all those things!

As a bit of technical issues: the interview was done outside Starbucks on the evening of 2/26/20, so there’s a good bit of road noise that’s coming from behind us. I also left the recording a bit more “raw” than usual; I didn’t delete the little conversations between questions and banter like I usually do. This was an artistic decision to fit the gritty feel of the background noise.

18. Dale Jackson of Jackson Services

18. Dale Jackson of Jackson Services

Hey, LaGrange!... So this is the first time I went way off script. In this week’s interview we don’t get to the LaGrange component of Hey, LaGrange!

My interview this week was with Dale Jackson of Jackson Services. Our conversation focused primarily on Dale’s advocacy for his son, Collin, who has an ASD (autism spectrum disorder), and medical cannabis to treat ASD’s and other medical issues, such as seizures (which the host suffers from following his craniotomy in December 2014).

Overall, the podcast goes a bit longer than usual. It is all quality too. It just doesn’t get to Dale’s favorite spots in LaGrange, his favorite foods, etc.

This interview goes a bit more personal than others I’ve done. Dale gets choked up as he contemplates the future healthcare for Collin, and Collin’s future in general. I didn’t mean to spend so much time on medical cannabis, but I don’t regret it.

17. Ender Hidalgo and Ada Lopez of Taqueria Estrella Roja

17. Ender Hidalgo and Ada Lopez of Taqueria Estrella Roja

Hey, LaGrange!... So this week I interview the owners of taqueria Estrella roja or red star tacos for those of us who don’t want to brutalize the Spanish language. This interview was especially eye opening for me for a handful of reasons. The first and foremost was that I was able to see LaGrange through the eyes of someone who moved here from conditions far worse, not once but twice migrated! And, for her, LaGrange was and is the home of the American dream. For her LaGrange is where she is making her dreams come true. That was uniquely astounding to an entitled person like myself. I definitely found myself having to reevaluate my priorities and values after this conversation.

Another theme that came forward from my time interviewing the owners of Red Star Tacos was the amount of dedication it takes to make a restaurant successful. The owners, Ender and Ada, eat, breathe and sleep that restaurant and it’s success. They are truly dedicated to making a go of it.

Overall, this was an enlightening interview that I found deeply moving. Hopefully, you do as well. This was the first time I’d ever had someone cry during an interview, it wouldn’t be the last. But I was deeply moved here and I hope that Ender and Ada’s stories move you as well.

16. “Golden Boy” Chick Donovan of the WWE Network (part 3 of 3)

16. “Golden Boy” Chick Donovan of the WWE Network (part 3 of 3)

I’m releasing this on a Friday because it’s really only 3/4 of an interview. My listeners deserve more than that for a full episode. So tune in Monday to see who’s the next guest to be profiled!

This is the third and final part of the interview with “golden boy” chick Donovan. Honestly, I think everything else he says in this 17 minutes is overshadowed by what he says about his time as the Wrestle Reader. He lit up when he talked about it so much and it brought such happiness to him. I don’t think he’d been asked about it in this format in a long time, if ever. So that’s my takeaway from this and my crowning achievement. I’m so glad that listener Jake Mathews told me to ask about it because had he not I wouldn’t have had the foggiest idea what it was. So well done Jake and here’s the interview...

15. “Golden Boy” Chick Donovan of the WWE Network (part 2 of 3)

15. “Golden Boy” Chick Donovan of the WWE Network (part 2 of 3)

In this second of three parts “golden boy” chick Donovan opines on wrestling and life in general. He details his life opening a gym, working for 15 years as a paraprofessional for the Troup County school system, and wrestling Andre the Giant in a Battle Royal. This was a great and eye opening interview as most of this information was completely new to me, and perhaps will be to you as well.

13. Lewis O. Powell IV of Strange LaGrange Tours

13. Lewis O. Powell IV of Strange LaGrange Tours

My interview this week is Paranormal aficionado Lewis Powell IV of Strange LaGrange Tours. Our conversation extended from hauntings in the archive building to the dialectal nature of people in the Bible Belt when it comes to believing in ghosts. Overall, this was a mysterious interview (not really). In fact, it was a lot of fun and we sat around of the record and talked a bunch after the interview was over too- sorry you aren’t privy to that conversation...I assure you it wasn’t salacious. 😂

12. Nina Markette Baker, Superior Court Judge for the Coweta Circuit

12. Nina Markette Baker, Superior Court Judge for the Coweta Circuit

This week’s interview goes judicial. This week I interview superior court judge for the Coweta circuit, Nina Markette Baker. Markette to her friends and family.

Our interview was about 30 minutes long and ranged from her growing up in LaGrange to what it was like moving back to LaGrange as an adult and raising a family here.

She said she had a lot of fun with the interview and I believe her. Judges are really limited in what they can say and promote, but this interview format provided an outline for her to speak to her preferences without actually endorsing anything. Overall, we had a lot of fun and I hope that, as always, that comes through in the interview.

11. Maggie McDonald of Pure Life Studios

11. Maggie McDonald of Pure Life Studios

Bonus episode! So I decided that since I’ve got so many quality interviews lined up that I’d post a bonus episode for your listening enjoyment.

This episode is my interview with local music venue owner and operator Maggie McDonald of Pure Life Studios. My interview with Maggie encompassed the trials of a venue owner, the operation of a soundboard, the advent of Sweetland and its effect on Pure Life’s business and many other topics that I won’t broach here. I’ll save that for the interview.

10. Shannon Gavin Johnson of the Troup County Historical Society’s Archives and Legacy Museum

This week’s interview is Shannon Gavin Johnson the executive director of the Troup County Historical Society’s Archives and Legacy Museum. The interview was extremely enlightening. Shannon shared her love of the LaGrange community, her passion for history and archiving and her love of the small town feel of LaGrange. That’s not all she shared in the interview, but I don’t want to spoil it for you.

9. Josh Rigsby of Pretty Good Books

9. Josh Rigsby of Pretty Good Books

My interview this week was josh rigsby, co-owner of pretty good books on Vernon st by the hospital in LaGrange. He was a great interview. He has a master of fine arts in creative writing and is working on a novel in his spare time so we had plenty to talk about. Though my autobiography that I’m currently working on didn’t come up. (I probably should talk to him about that.) Overall, it was a really fun interview that ran the gamut of topics from late 18th century European tea trading to the diversity of toppings one can put on tortilla chips.

Overall I had a lot of fun with this interview and was sad when I ran out of prepped questions because I wanted to keep talking. I hope that shines through.

My interview this week is with Kim Hunter, head baker at Dixie Donuts on main st. In downtown LaGrange.

Kim has lived a storied life and only recently moved to LaGrange. Opening Dixie Donuts to the public on July 4th.

In the interview she talks about her past careers, the importance of family to her, and what superpower she’d love to have.

This interview is a shorter one, but it is still chock full of goodness.

7. Andy Fritchley of Kelsey Design

7. Andy Fritchley of Kelsey Design

This week I interview Andy Fritchley, brand strategist for Kelsey design here in LaGrange. He also coached girls soccer for LaGrange high. The interview details his journey from meeting his wife at Georgia Tech, through interning and eventually becoming a process engineer at a local textiles factory, to taking a leap of faith with another local upstart and going out on a limb with his current employer 15 years ago.

And if that weren’t enough we close the interview discussing a fantastic way he celebrated his 40th birthday that you just have to hear!

I found this interview to be a lot of fun! It really seemed to flow and we were done before I knew it. I think that chemistry is reflected in the interview as well. I enjoyed meeting Andy Fritchley and hope you enjoy listening to our conversation.

6. Joyce Sato of 505 Eats

6. Joyce Sato of 505 Eats

My interview this week is with Joyce Sato of 505 Eats on Vernon St in LaGrange, adjoined to the Marathon station and sharing a parking lot with the Big Chick (another LaGrange landmark in its own right). In her interview Joyce discusses moving to LaGrange from Ohio, via Brooklyn. Opening the marathon station with her husband. She also draws back the curtain a bit on what it’s like to run multiple businesses and be a full-time mom (spoiler: it’s really hard).

The interview this week was a bit shorter than usual. That’s my fault. I was cramped for time and we’d already postponed this interview 3 times before. I didn’t want to postpone it again. So I figured a short interview was better than no interview at all.

I had a lot of fun sitting down with Joyce! I hope you enjoy listening to the interview!

5. Adam Speas of LGTV

5. Adam Speas of LGTV

My interview this week is with Adam Speas, the Communications Director for LGTV at City Hall in LaGrange. He makes and edits videos for LGTV and City Hall. He and his wife are new to LaGrange, having only moved to town 8 months ago. However, he’s gone a long way toward making the community his home already. The interview goes into the unconventional use for graveyards, his detailed search for and ranking of the best burger in LaGrange and his affinity for the Thread in town. He also shares what he most wishes he had known about when moving into the city of LaGrange.

Overall, I had a lot of fun interviewing Adam. We bonded on things like beer, beef and Batman. We also plugged his podcasts at the very end: “Cartwright! A Seinfeld Podcast,” where they recap and review episodes of the 90’s sitcom Seinfeld episode by episode. And, his second podcast, “A Blast from Our Past” explores all things nostalgia from semi-recent pop-culture. Both are worth giving a listen!

4. Nick Mayfield of Wild Leap Brew Co.

4. Nick Mayfield of Wild Leap Brew Co.

Nick Mayfield is a modern Michelangelo. The difference being his media, his paint brush and chisel, are food, drink and musical instruments. Having taken part in the launching of 505 Eats and Wild Leap Brew Company as well as the LaGrange satellite office of the Chattahoochee River Keepers— not to mention being a successful local musician! Nick has nearly done it all. His interview ranges all the way from his adoption in Romania to his participation in the awarding of the title of 2018’s ‘Best New Brewery’ to Wild Leap Brew Co. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed interviewing him!

3. Rev. R. Allen Pruitt of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church

My interview this week is the Reverend Allen Pruitt of St.
