ResponderTalk FT Dr. Chris Palmer

Christopher M. Palmer, MD, is a Harvard psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For more than two decades, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education at Harvard, McLean Hospital, and nationally. He spent more than fifteen years conducting neuroscience research in the areas of substance use and sleep disorders.  On top of these academic pursuits, he has continued to practice psychiatry, working with people who have treatment-resistant mental disorders using a variety of standard treatments. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders—conducting research in this area, treating patients, publishing academic articles, and speaking globally on this topic. Most recently, he has developed the first comprehensive theory of what causes mental illness, integrating biological, psychological, and social research into one unifying theory—the brain energy theory of mental illness.

In Season 6, Episode 6 of Inside the Labyrinth Podcast powered by the Non-Profit Reps For Responders, Frank and Jay had the honor and privilege to speak with Joseph Lanzone. Jason estimated he has recorded around 200 podcasts and this is his favorite. Joe and Jay get real VAULNERABLE here. We are not so different. This episode is an absolute MUST listen. Joe states "From my youth in dairy country, Wyoming County, NY, I have always been aware of the mission of service to others. "Love thy neighbor" was the guiding factor in my journey to college, graduate school and a long career in Clinical Social Work. The specializations of addiction and trauma have been the focus of my vocation for the past 40 years. As a recovering alcoholic and trauma survivor, I strongly empathize with having a brain that, when triggered, seems to have a mind of its own. I worked in Municipal Substance Abuse Counseling Centers in Rockland County, NY for 25 years : in offices, schools and on the streets of an extremely diverse population. My take-away is that our perceived differences can in no way eclipse our sameness as human beings: we all need COMPASSION. My 20 years as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service and my 34 years in private practice (now in Nyack, NY) all echo the same message that resonated in the cornfields of my childhood: We are all one human race - our lives are on loan - our job is to love and care through service - and our Employer creates the results! It is my honor to be a Reps for Responders volunteer, assisting all and any First Responders in need of support." We hope you guys enjoy this powerful episode and know that recovery  is possible for anyone.  @reps_for_responders @therealjumpmanjay  @inside_the_lab_podcast https://repsforresponders.org Youtube: Reps For Responders

In this episode we hit A LOT of topics such as nutrition, lifting, recovery and addiction. Cristina is a spouse of a Law Enforcement Officer. She's a health and wellness coach, a recovery coach and the VP of Reps For Responders. In 2020, she founded a community for the partners of addiction called Relationships and Recovery, a space where they could connect with others who 'get it', seek support and ask for advice. She hosts weekly meetings and has a private Facebook group. Her favorite quote is "shame dies when stories are told in a safe space", and that is one of communities missions: to help people shed their shame and guilt around addiction and the roles they've managed to take on as a caregiver, and possibly even an enabler.  Through that, she expanded her community to offer health and wellness coaching to empower women impacted by substance abuse to prioritize themselves through selfcare and focusing on their wants and needs through goal setting and accountability. This episode takes us through Cristina's journey from her early high school days, her experience on the sports fields to weightlifting and how fitness has carried her through some of her most vulnerable and difficult moments in life, ultimately bring her to where she is now. Cristina talks about how she's grateful for some of her darker moments, for those are the ones that made her who she is today- compassionate, empathetic, and self-aware. She leads by examples and share that "someday you will tell your story about how you overcame what you are going through right now, and it will become part of someone else's survival guide". Thank you Cristina for your bravery, courage and honesty!

This was our third in person and filmed episode and we had a blast! In this episode Pete opened up about his journey in his Labyrinth as he was very dedicated to baseball in Highschool and almost became a professional ball player. "Pete Thron was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He was a New York city housing authority police officer for nearly a decade and involved in hundreds of arrests most of which were narcotic related. During his career as a police officer in the most dangerous areas in New York City, he made over 500 personal arrests and assisted in over a thousand others. He has been awarded with over 25 medals and 75 written commendations for bravery. He has also worked in criminal investigations, private security, and as a sports consultant. End of Tour is his debut nonfiction work." Pete then took us through his whole career and openly admitted how his goal of trying to become detective got the best of him. Pete ended up serving two years in prison but that did not break him down. After prison he wrote two books "End of Tour and "One Under" and is working on his third (book info below)! If you watch the podcast you can see and feel the emotions in the room. Pete we want to thank you for your bravery, honesty and courage. He opened up about a time on the job when he was a few years in that made him realize why he needs to continue to train hard in the gym but not only for himself. Mike promotes training for other first responders because any situation can turn south at anytime.
Mikes actions speaks for himself. He realized that he was getting sucked into the "4-4" life for a little bit and told himself this could go two paths. He chose the path of hanging with guys at the "benches" instead of the barstool. Mike is involved in many hobbies outside of the job and encourages First Responders to find a hobby that YOU enjoy aka the JOB is not your life, its part of your life.
We hope all of you enjoy this episode because Mike is the top Model and Leader of what a cop should work towards on the job and off the job. For any LEO out there this is a must listen and must share! Thank you Mike for coming on our show and sharing your strength, experience and hope!
"Training started around twelve years old in my middle school gym class. I just liked the way it made me feel. Going into high school, I began training for football, which I played into college. After graduation, I began training to be a police officer. My line of work has become my source of inspiration, not only because of the physical demands it has, but the mental toll it takes on people. With suicide rates among police rapidly increasing, I do my best to encourage others to train for those same reasons. Knowing that other people rely on me, both at work and at home. If I’m not on top of my game, lives are at risk.

This episode means a lot to Frank and Jay because Dylan shares a VERY similar mission to Reps For Responders. Dylan is fighting to end the stigma of reaching out for help in the First Responder Community. Dylan dove right into his labyrinth and had nothing to hide. This is an episode every active and retired First Responder HAS to hear. Dylan shared his strength, experience and hope and ended up asking for help. Not only did Dylan get the help he needed but he is not only surviving anymore but THRIVING. Dylan was super humble about his story and his mission stating he is working on himself everyday and life is a never ending journey of learning, improving and helping others. Thank you Dylan for helping us created a super powerful episode that we know will help ATLEAST one, and that's what its all about.

"1less was developed with two main objectives: 1.) To provide first responders with advantages to help combat mental health issues that come with our various professions. 2.) To spark first responders inner drive to serve their communities to the best of their ability through the power of “purpose”. " 1less is working on being the Hub for multiple other organizations so that any First Responder in need can reach out to multiple resources.

Fitzgerald - Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent/ Criminal Profiler/ Forensic Linguist and Member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit. This episode was something that Frank and Jay are speechless over. James opened up about the start of his Police Career and how it molded him to as he began his FBI career and shaped him into the man he is today. "Through eleven years on the BPD, and after working as a patrolman, a detective, a detective sergeant, a patrol sergeant, making all sorts of arrests, and dealing with all sorts of political intrigue within the department itself, I took stock of my life. It was clearly time to move on. I applied to, was selected by, and joined…the FBI.

After graduating from yet another law enforcement academy, this one in Quantico, Virginia, I found myself in early 1988 as a brand new FBI agent assigned to New York City. While there, I investigated bank robberies, kidnappings, extortions, and many other violent incidents which happened to have a federal crime nexus. I then learned of an opportunity for advancement within the FBI. One which I knew I could master and at which I would succeed; that is, as a criminal profiler. So, back to Quantico I went for my promotion, more training, and a new assignment.

From Unabom, to the Jon Benet Ramsey homicide, the DC Sniper case, the Anthrax investigation, a stint in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and many other notorious murder, rape, and terroristic matters in the 1990s and early 2000s, I played a role in all of them. Through the Unabom case, and later other notable investigations, not to mention two master’s degrees, I also became an expert in the area of forensic linguistics; that is, the scientific-oriented analysis of written and spoken language for investigative and evidentiary purposes."

James also wrote : A Journey to the Center of the Mind – Book I, A Journey to the Center of the Mind – Book II, A Journey to the Center of the Mind – Book III.

Manhunt: Unabomber on Netflix is based on real-life FBI agent and criminal profiler Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald and the hunt for the Unabomber in the 1990s.

This episode was something that Frank and Jay NEEDED to hear. Heath did not hold back about his football career but even more important, his life experiences. Heath spoke volume about his struggles in life, his suffering, his successes and failures. Today Heath uses his life experience, skills, and knowledge to help men of all ages learn and grow together. In this episode a lot of suffering was spoken about but the thing about suffering is that it is needed in life to grow. Suffering is a PART of life. We are hoping this episode can aid some people in a dark time or prevent people from going into a dark time. This is a MUST listen episode. Thank you Heath!!!

==========================================================================================================================================

"Heath Evans Is a former 10 year NFL Fullback and current TV Analyst for NFL NETWORK.

Evans played college ball in the SEC at Auburn University and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft. During his career, Evans played for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints, the last of which he won Super Bowl 44 with.

Evans was the first fullback taken in the 2001 NFL draft when the Seattle Seahawks selected him in the third round (82nd overall). He spent four years with the Seahawks before a brief stent with the Miami Dolphins in 2005 . Soon after being released by the Dolphins, he was signed by the New England Patriots where he spent the following four years before joining the New Orleans Saints. It was with the Saints that he wrapped up the final two years of his long-lived NFL playing career.

Throughout Evans’ career he was a part of two different Super Bowl experiences. In 2007 at Super Bowl 42 he and his teammates tried to complete the perfect 19-0 season, but fell short to the New York Giants in a 17-14 loss. Two years later again, with the Saints he was part of bringing the city of New Orleans its first Lombardi trophy by beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in the unforgettable Super Bowl 44.

Evans is known for his passion. Whether talking about his family, relationship with his daughters, making his opinion known on NFL Network, or attacking his daily fitness regime. He’s all in with a mindset and wants to dominate everything he sets his hands to do. He is goal oriented and set on using his athletic and television success to make a difference in people’s lives. Heath believes humility is the greatest asset a leader can posses, and that great leaders are created, not born. Wherein lies his passion to teach, instruct, and coach the next generation of young athletes so they can achieve their goals and experience true success."

Dr. Gilmartin is the author of "Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers and Their Families". I have been personally preaching this book for over two years now (when I first heard about it) and read it twice. We also reference this book during our Responder Talk group meetings. This conversation was an early Christmas gift. I personally believe this book should be part of the curriculum in every academy and read by LEO'S and their families all over the country. We spoke about the biological and psychological changes that Officers face when during and after their careers and touched on the ways Officers can improve their mindset and overall health. I am truly speechless and honored to have had this conversation with such a caring, intelligent, and determined retired Officer. Thank you Dr. Gilmartin for fighting the good fight and being a prime example of leadership! If you are young on the job or want to become a first responder, this is for you. Glaude, who once weighed 360 lb., reclaimed his health with nutrition and CrossFit.  “I got to a point at my heaviest where I was OK with dying before I was 40,” Glaude says.  When Glaude realized his weight was preventing him from doing things he wanted to do, he implemented what he calls the “common sense diet”: He cut out soda, junk food and fast food.  “When you’re as heavy as I was, if you just make a small change, you’ll see a big result,” Glaude says. “I made that small change, saw a big result, was more motivated to make another change to see more results, and … it was like a domino effect.”  After dabbling in fitness competitions, Glaude found CrossFit Dark Side in El Cajon, California, and “fell in love,” he says.  “CrossFit has that community aspect of, like, you are doing the same workout as all these other people. You’re suffering together, and it makes the gym less of an isolated thing,” Glaude says.  When Glaude posted a video showing the loose skin he had left after his massive weight loss, it went viral. Today, “Obese to Beast” has 529,000 followers and  counting." ========================================================================================================================================== @reps_for_responders  @obese_to_beast @therealjumpmanjay  @inside_the_lab_podcast  https://repsforresponders.org Youtube: Reps For Responders

After nine years with the military, Hanus was honorably discharged in 2018. He left in order to pursue higher education. In 2014, he earned an associates degree which acted as a catalyst. ========================================================================================================================================= In season 4 of episode 1 of Inside the Labyrinth Podcast, Frank and Jay had the opportunity to chat with firefighter and CrossFit legend, Matt Chan. Matt is a firefighter in the Denver area, a top ranked Crossfit games athlete, and the winner of the 2020 Titan Games. Matt opens up about his early life and how he got into Crossfit and the dedication it took to become the best of the best. Matt also went through a traumatic accident bike accident where he almost lost his leg. Matt is the definition of never giving up and a role model for all athletes and First Responders. We want to thank Matt for coming on and sharing his journey with us and all our listeners because no matter what happens in life, their is always a way out and a way to improve if you let yourself. Thank you Matt for your resilience and powerful impact on the fitness and First Responder community! ========================================================================================================================================== "Matt Chan originally took up CrossFit in his late 20s to help improve his endurance as a Denver area firefighter. After four Top 10 finishes at the CrossFit Games, however (including the runner-up slot in 2012), Chan became a full-time athlete and one of the most popular and knowledgeable veterans in the sport. Already 30 when he made his Games debut in 2008, Chan had to battle through injuries and out-work a growing field of younger challengers to maintain his drive for the podium. In 2013, despite nagging knee problems, he showed his heart and resolve by taking first place at a Regional competition for an incredible sixth straight year. The next summer, a horrific bike accident threatened not only his competitive career, but his ability to walk. True to form, though, Chan battled back again and improbably produced a Top 10 finish at the 2015 Southwest Regionals—not enough for a return to the Games, but another bold statement from one of the sport’s most respected ambassadors. Throughout his career, Matt Chan has taken a very active role as a Rogue athlete and advisor, helping to co-develop his own Signature Series line of products. This includes his personally designed 28.5mm bushing barbell, the Rogue Chan Bar. Matt and his wife Cherie are on the CrossFit Trainers Staff and live in Boulder, CO."

Season 3 Episode 7 FT NYPD SGT Julissa Camacho (Simply_me007)

Season 3 Episode 7 FT NYPD SGT Julissa Camacho (Simply_me007)

In season 3 of episode 7 of Inside the Labyrinth Podcast, Frank and Jay had the opportunity to chat with NYPD SGT Julissa Camacho. All we can say is WOW! We recorded this episode a month ago but wanted to leave it for the season finale for a reason. We couldn't thank Julissa enough for being so brutally HONEST AND COURAGEOUS in this episode. Julissa opens up about her early family life and how her household suffered from addiction. She also opens up about being a foster child and how her mother unfortunately just passed away a few months ago. This is the story, First Responder or not, everyone needs to hear. Julissa is a very spiritual person who uses God, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and fitness as a huge outlet to keep going in her life...day by day. Julissa has competed in bodybuilding shows, a member of the NYPD Powerlifting Team, and just recently became promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Anyone who needs some motivation and a great comeback story of never giving up...this is for you! Again, thank you Julissa for coming on and being so brave!

==========================================================================================================================================

“A lot of my motivation comes from a lot of the struggles I’ve been through in my life.  I feel like when I exercise, it’s a positive outlet. I feel a sense of release, a sense of peace when I come to the gym.  It’s very therapeutic for me,” Julie Camacho told Overmyer."

“I was born and raised in the Bronx.  Actually when I was 2 years old… they found me and my sister riding the train alone,” she said.

Camacho was found in the subway by the NYPD. Little did she know, one day that uniform would be hers.

“We were put into the foster care system… we ended up homeless and living in shelters,” Camacho said.

She lived in a shelter that’s right next to the precinct she now works in.

Season 3 Episode 6 FT Retired Cal Fire Captain Bill Grundler (@Billgrundler)

In season 3 of episode 6 of Inside the Labyrinth Podcast, Frank had the opportunity to chat with retired Cal Fire Captain and owner of CrossFit Inferno, Bill Grundler. Bill talks about how Covid affected him and his gym but talks about overcoming the beast when his gym had to close. Bill also speaks about his journey from when he was 30 years old to how he is now in his 50's. Bill was very honest about his journey and talks about his experience with stress and when he was hospitalized in his 30's that changed his life forever. Bill is the perfect example of how life should be lived after you retire from being a First Responder. When you retire, you have a whole life ahead of you to enjoy and that's what Bill does by still helping others in the gym! Thank you Bill for your service, great laughs, and being so honest and humble. If you are a First Responder, this is for you...if you are about to retire or fighting high stress levels, this is for you...if you are into CrossFit or just overall training, this is for you!

Season 3 Episode 4 FT John Meadows (@mountaindog1)

In season 3 of episode 4 of Inside The Labyrinth Podcast, Jay and I had the privilege of having John Meadows on our show. All we can say is wow. This episode was one of our favorites. If you want to hear a come back story of someone defeating death twice, this is for you. John recently had a heart attack on May 11, 2020. ========================================================================================================================================== If you want to hear a story of someone never giving up on his dreams since 13 years old, this is for you. John also grew up with no mother or father and was raised by his grandmother. John opens up about his mom being addicted to drugs and alcohol and we commend you for that. John is more than a pro bodybuilder and a business man. John is an inspirational, intelligent and caring individual that went through the labyrinth with swords swinging. This episode is a must listen to if you are a bodybuilder, grew up with addiction in your house, an entrepreneur, a father, or anyone having trouble in their life! ========================================================================================================================================== "John Meadows is an American professional bodybuilder and entrepreneur with an intriguing story. While John now boasts a successful career as an IFBB Pro bodybuilder and fitness company owner, his journey towards the top was extremely difficult.
Growing up, John never met his father, and his mother died at an extremely young age. This meant John only had his grandmother to take care of him. When his grandmother tragically passed away in 1999, John was left alone without his family to support him.
As the years went by, John continued to face new adversities in his life. During his early days in bodybuilding, John suffered from a rare colon disease. After fighting the disease for several months, his colon burst – almost resulting in his death. Luckily, John was quickly rushed to an emergency room where his life was saved. After several months of recovery, John was finally back on his feet.
Coming back into bodybuilding, John used the very obstacles that almost cost him his life as ‘fuel’ to grow stronger. Ever since he recovered from the colon surgery, John has gone on to become a successful bodybuilder, entrepreneur, and inspiration for many people all over the world."

Season 2 Episode 4 FT Brandon Lilly & Syn Martinez

In season 2 of episode 4 of Inside The Labyrinth Podcast, Jay and I had the privilege of having two power houses and leaders on the show, Brandon Lilly And Syn Martinez. "Brandon is a top ranked powerlifter, author of "The Cube Method", and "365STRONG", as well as a respected strength coach. Brandon is ranked as one of the strongest powerlifters of All-Time, having world class totals in multiple weight class, raw, and equipped — *2,110 lbs Raw Belt Only, *2,237 lbs Raw with Knee Wraps and *2,612 lbs Multiply Equipped. His efforts as a lifter, and a coach have helped cause a paradigm shift in the sport of powerlifting. His Cube Method has helped over a dozen men total 2,000 lbs or more in raw divisions, and over twenty women total over 1,000 lbs." ========================================================================================================================================= "AfroBrutality is a mindset for people who care about being healthy, who care about succeeding in life by any and all means, who will do whatever it takes to add positivity to their life and the people around them," "We're after a mindset of people who want to lead a positive life and won't let life dictate how that looks and feels." Martinez tells BuzzFeed Health he needed something that captured the spirit of their loose collective of mostly black and Latino athletes that started working out together in 2008, as well as Martinez's non-conformist, in-your-face approach to fitness, and the super-hardcore CrossFit workouts they were doing. He drew a skull with an afro and a middle finger as the handle of the afro pick. He called it Afro Brutality."
==========================================================================================================================================
Not only was this episode one of my favorite podcasts, but it was one of my favorite conversations I have ever had. Brandon shares his life experience and how a traumatic lifting injury changed his life forever in 2014. Not only was Brandon very honest about his journey but he admitted his faults during his journey which made him who he is today. Syn speaks on how AfroBrutality was created and how he first met Brandon. Syn does not hold back and is the definition of starting an idea from scratch and turning a dream into a reality. If you are looking for life experience and the willing to change, this is for you. Jay and I want to thank both of you leaders for coming on the show and making a difference. Its conversations like this one that show no matter who we are, we all have struggles and we all have the opportunity to grow and make ourselves better.

Season 2 Episode 5 FT Cory Gregory (Corgygfitness)

In Season 2 of episode 5 of Inside The Labyrinth podcast, Jay and I had the privilege of speaking with and learning from Cory Gregory. This episode meant a lot to me because back in 2012 when I was training for College football, Cory was one of the main guys I looked up to. There was an app called "8 Tracks" which would play random music, or I would play motivational talks that Cory was featured in. Cory was a huge part of my journey for 8 years and still is today. Cory speaks about how he grinded his way through life from growing up with little money, to working in a coal mine, to breaking powerlifting records, becoming a pro bodybuilder, and much more. This episode spoke volume from the start. If you are looking to make yourself better in the fitness and business world, this episode is for you. If you need to get out of your own head, this episode is for you. If you want to hear from a man who went from living in a small trailer to owning his own successful business...this episode is for you.  Jay and I want to thank you for WAKING OUR ASSES UP and for taking your time to drop knowledge and laughs with us. Episode Three Ft. James Geering From Behind The Shield

Episode Three Ft. James Geering From Behind The Shield

In this episode we hit an emotional topic: How to get over the loss of a coworker, especially as a first responder. James talks about his experience being a firefighter and EMT in both Florida and California, his childhood, and how a doctor in England told him he was he was color blind, but when he came to the states he found out other wise. James is an awesome and inspiring individual, inside and out with a TON of life experience and wisdom. It was a huge honor to have him on our show. Check out Jame's podcast “Behind The Shield!”

"James was born in England and spent almost thirty years there before emigrating to the U.S. In James's early years he was in a spectrum of jobs from lifeguard to stuntman. James had always dreamed of becoming a Firefighter but was told as a child that his poor color vision would disqualify him from the process. It wasn't until James moved to America that he realized that the vision deficit was mild and was a poor excuse for not following his dream. James promptly enrolled in the Fire Academy and the rest is history. James has been a Firefighter/Paramedic for fifteen years now and still loves it as much as his first day on the job. James is also a Crossfit coach and a graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology. At the start of his firefighting career he felt invincible and thought that the only danger to his health would be in a building collapse or burn over. As the years have progressed, he began to notice a trend of ill health in his profession. Retirees would pass away soon after they left. Young firemen got fatal illnesses and depression claimed the lives of many of his brothers and sisters. James incurred several injuries on the job despite being a lifelong athlete, realizing that his training was creating some glaring weaknesses. James started on a path of self reflection and ultimately healing, which took him to some of the greatest minds in the wellness world. Through questioning everything James had been taught, he began to deconstruct the entire fitness community and rebuild from the ground up. He realized that there was a giant void in the area of First Responder wellness. The advice and literature that was out there seemed outdated and disconnected from the rigors of shift life. There was only one solution; fill that void with the amazing knowledge he encountered along my his own journey of self healing and repair."

Episode Two Ft. Josh Bryant From Jail House Strong

In this podcast, Frankie and Jay had the honor of interviewing and podcasting with Josh Bryant who is the author of Jail House Strong. Josh holds a master’s degree in Exercise Science and is a well renowned industry expert, recently named the International Sport Sciences Association (ISSA) Director of Applied Strength and Power Development. He trains and coaches some of the strongest and most-muscular athletes in the world both in person and via the Internet, some of whom are multiple all-time, world-record holders and IFBB Pro bodybuilders. As an athlete, he was the youngest person in power lifting history to bench press 600 lbs. He also squatted 909 lbs and deadlifted 810 lbs in competition. Josh shares his knowledge via seminars, books, courses and in-person/online training. He also just published a new book called "Tactical Strongman", which can be found on Amazon.
In our second episode of "Inside the Labryinth", we cover different ways to train physically with a focus on first responders. We talk about why strongman training is important, how sleep and stress effects the body, and what alcohol does to the body and the mind, especially when one is under stress.
Josh pulls his knowledge from real life experiences, and we thank you, Josh, for joining our podcast to share it with our listeners! Please bare with us as we are podcasting via Skype due to everything that is going on! We are trying to figure out the best way to record these. Thank you.
