But where does it come from, and is there any evidence that it was ever real? As we move closer to beach weather in the U.S., it's a perfect time to examine this City Under The Sea. Ep. 6: Franksgiving

Ep. 6: Franksgiving

From 1939 to 1941, the states of Texas, Mississippi, and Colorado held two Thanksgiving Days. The rest of the country was evenly split, with half the states celebrating a week sooner than the other half. But why? Well, for that, we look at a story involving the Christmas season, the Great Depression, and FDR. Fill your plates with Turkey and stuffing, kick back in your recliners, and get ready for the story of Franksgiving. It's a great way to make your holiday ... super cool.

Ep. 5: Wrench Revolver Dagger Rope

Ep. 5: Wrench Revolver Dagger Rope

Everyone loves a good murder mystery. Well, a lot of us do, anyway. The evidence of this is found in the staying power of such authors as Agatha Christie and the board game CLUE, as well as a continued stream of shows and films such as the BBC series Sherlock, the US series Law and Order, and the 2017 version of Murder on the Orient Express and the film Knives Out, debuting at the end of this very month. But when we think of many of the tropes of the genre, from red herrings to strangers locked in at a dinner party, we get them from a certain time period, which has been dubbed 'The Golden Age of Detective Fiction'. Let's see what that era was, the origins of murder mysteries in general, and why so many of us, to this day, consider them ... super cool.

Ep. 4: OK BOOMER

Ep. 4: OK BOOMER

'Millennials are killing _' has been a rallying cry for older folks for years now; an anti-youth complaint directed at a generation greatly misunderstood and misrepresented.
Within the last few weeks, the clapback to this, and against the generation largely responsible for the original anti-youth attacks - Baby Boomers - has come not from Millennials, but their younger cousins, Generation Z.
'OK BOOMER' is as potent and becoming as viral in its cry against the injustices and ignorance of old age as much as using 'Millennial' as shorthand for entitled and lazy youth has been for the previous 5 to 10 years.
But why are the generations feuding? What even are the generations, anyway? Let's learn the fascinating details of generational theory, and what exactly it is that has caused 60-somethings to be at war with 20-somethings, and what this theory can teach us about the rhythms of our society.

This Saturday, November 9th, 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of an indescribably important event - the fall of the Berlin Wall. But why was Berlin cut in two, what was life like in the time the wall was up, and why does it matter that it came down? It's a Cold War classic, and it's super cool.

Ep. 2: Spooky Season

Ep. 2: Spooky Season

Ghosts and goblins and ghouls, oh my! Halloween has grown rapidly in the last few decades in its cultural reach and the passion of those of us that consider it our favorite holiday means that its not going anywhere anytime soon. But why do we whip out fake tombstones to place in our yards and ask for candy from strangers each October 31st? What does it have to do with ancient views of the natural world, and what forces have combined together to create this mysterious and alluring time of the year? It's that time again, for Spooky Season.
