Garry L. Cox, raised in Appanoose county, Iowa, is a writer, actor and runner who lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

His extensive teaching career includes teaching English and writing proficiency to junior high through adult education students both native English speakers and English as a second language learners.

His passion for running is comparable to his passion for writing.

Garry runs every day and still competes while training with some of the best athletes in the world.

I have so much respect for caretakers. Often, they give a substantial portion of their lives in order to make someone's last days less painful and lonely. In many cases, these people are unpaid and never properly thanked. 

In this episode I have a heartfelt conversation with Peggy Sweeney-McDonald, who was the primary caretaker for her mother after an Alzheimer's diagnosis changed everything. We talk about love and regret, pain and compassion, and why there is beauty even in the most tragic of circumstances. And on a lighter note, we also talk about why the podcasting community is so completely AWESOME.

How do you affect the world around you? And who are you, when you're not looking in the mirror?

Whether we say it out loud or merely think it, we all want to have a voice. We all want to be heard. And yet so many of us vanish into our homes at the end of the day, curtains drawn.

We struggle to see ourselves. And the person in the mirror is often just a stranger.

I too, am fighting to be heard. And just like there are days when I have to convince myself that it's okay to look in the mirror, so too are there days when I am able to stand tall and smile at the person smiling back at me.

What I've found is this: My happiness comes from art and my ability to create. And what I get out of life depends entirely on what I put into it.

I want to hear from the people who don't normally get a voice. The introverts. The working class. The minorities. I want unpopular opinons. I can't give a voice to everyone, but I can give my time to a few.

My podcast shares the experiences, reviews and artistic talents of people you've likely never heard of. You won't see many famous names here. What you WILL find, however, are people who will inspire you to create. These are people who stumble and slip, but can eventually succeed.

I may ask difficult questions sometimes, but I'm always willing to listen.

Yvonne Caputo has been a story teller going back to her earliest memory at the age of four. As a teacher and a psychotherapist, she has used stories to widen the eyes of the students she has taught and to soften the pain in the hearts of the clients who have come to her. Little did she know that it would be the stories of WWII told to her over the phone that would give her one of the greatest gifts of all. It would give her the father she had always wanted to know .

Her master’s degrees in education and psychology provided her with the ability to listen and respond. Her love of history and travel took her to many of the places her dad would have known in the war. Her husband and children gave her the security to pursue a new career as a writer, and her little house surrounded by trees in rural southeastern Pennsylvania gave her a sense of her own place and an office with a computer.

This is a special April Fools' edition of The Poetry Novelist Podcast (No, seriously). In this episode, you'll get to listen to the original audio recording of Smoke & Mirrors that I recorded in 2017. Since there wasn't any music included in the original, I've chosen not to add any here, either. I've done minimal editing on it, which is apparent in the fact that you can hear a slight lack of fullness as well as a bit of an echo in the recording. Two short stories with all mistakes included. The first is my attempt at honoring the late Edgar Allan Poe, using a writing style that I hope is similar enough to his, while remaining unique enough that it isn't insulting.
