How To Create and Capture Candid Wedding Photos (& Video)

How To Create and Capture Candid Wedding Photos (& Video)

Hosts: Adam and Becca Davis, Award-Winning Wedding Photographers, Videographers, and Educators

Duration: Approximately 42 minutes

Welcome back to another episode of A Couple and Some Cameras! In today's episode, we're diving into the differences between posed, prompted, and candid photos and the process by which each is captured.

Current trends in wedding photography have shifted heavily towards candid imagery. We’re here for it! But it’s important to understand what candid truly means in the world of wedding photography. Often times, we’ll see a TikTok or reel where someone is saying how they only want candid images and then sharing examples of what they mean. And, more often than not, those examples are almost always prompted images and not candid photos.

What are posed, prompted, and candid photos?

Posed Photos

Posed photos are fully directed by the photographer. The photographer is setting the entire image and directing the subjects where to look, place their hands, and more. This can be a traditional image of someone smiling at the camera, but it can also be editorial in nature with specific lighting and hand placement.

Prompted Photos

Prompted photos are when a photographer sets the scene and then coaches the subject on what will happen next. It allows the subject to interpret the prompt in a way that naturally fits them with the end result, creating the candid moment the photographer is planning for. An example of this could be a photographer giving their subjects the prompt to run towards each other as if they haven’t seen each other for months. The photographer isn’t necessarily wanting the running part of this prompt; they’re looking for the aftermath. The true candid comes about after the prompt.

Candid Photos

Candid photos are captured through a documentary or photojournalistic approach. These are moments that have evolved organically with no coaching, setup, prep, or prompting. The photographer is in the background, capturing moments as they unfold naturally. This is how the majority of wedding receptions are photographed.

Are you a photographer or videographer wanting more guidance and coaching on how to capture and create candid moments? We’re currently accepting applications for our coaching spots that will kick off in January 2024 If this is something that you’d like to learn more about, be sure to apply for our coaching experience

Should You Be Using Instagram to Find Your Wedding Photographer and Videographer?

Should You Be Using Instagram to Find Your Wedding Photographer and Videographer?

Hosts: Adam and Becca Davis, Award-Winning Wedding Photographers, Videographers, and Educators

Duration: Approximately 31 minutes

Welcome back to another episode of A Couple and Some Cameras! In today's episode, we're answering a very important question: should you use Instagram to find your wedding photographer and videographer?

We’ll cover how to use Instagram as a search tool to find your perfect vendors and also give some tips for vendors to optimize the free marketing platform.

So, let’s dive in, shall we?

Should you be using Instagram to find your wedding photographer and videographer?

TLDR: Absolutely YES.

Instagram is a great place to quickly view wedding vendors and especially get a feel for the editing style and photography/videography styles your prefer. But how should you use Instagram to have success when finding your wedding photographer and videographer? Glad you asked!

Start With Searching

Search hashtags, locations, venues, or even editing styles. You can look for hashtags that align with your wedding vision or even geographic location. An important thing to remember is that most wedding photographers and videographers love to travel to new locations for weddings. Geographic locations won’t be a big hurdle for finding a photographer or videographer!

Decide On Editing Style

Searching on Instagram is a great way to quickly get a feel for the editing style you prefer. Editing styles fall into 3 main categories: light and airy, true-to-tone, and dark and moody.

Find The Shooting Style You Like Best

Once you know which editing styles you like, look closer at photographers and videographers that fit those styles. Then, look for the type of style they shoot in. Shooting style typically falls into these categories: candid, documentary, editorial, cinematic, traditional, and a mix!

Follow Your Favorites & Get To Know Them

By following your favorite photographers and videographers, you’ll be able to see more of what they post and get a better feel for who they are. Of course, go through websites as well! But following the photographers and videographers will help to get a feel for if you think you’d enjoy spending so much time with them at your wedding.

Inquire and Book

This is the stage that is super exciting for you and your photographer and videographer. Inquire with your favorites and book as soon as you can so you can make sure your favorite photographer and videographer are available for your wedding.

For Vendors

  • Standout by being authentic and true to who you are

  • Remember that Instagram is a free marketing tool that you should be leveraging because who doesn’t love some incredible ROI?!

  • Be sure to post consistently. You don’t have to post every day, but be consistent!

We appreciate your continued support and can't wait to share more exciting episodes with you. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider subscribing, leaving a review, and sharing it with your friends. Don't forget to tag us on Instagram @adamandbecca for more updates and behind-the-scenes content.

How to Plan and Execute an Editorial or Styled Shoot

How to Plan and Execute an Editorial or Styled Shoot

Hosts: Adam and Becca Davis, Award-Winning Wedding Photographers, Videographers, and Educators

Duration: Approximately 34 minutes

Welcome back to another episode of A Couple and Some Cameras! In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of editorial and styled shoots, exploring how to plan and execute these creative endeavors. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting, this episode is packed with insights and tips to plan your first editorial or styled shoot and level up your portfolio.

When planning an editorial or styled shoot, there are 4 key items to keep in mind:

  1. Vision is Everything: To embark on a successful editorial or styled shoot, you must begin with a concrete vision. This is your creative playground, so feel free to get imaginative. Your vision will serve as the guiding star, leading you through the entire process.

  1. Communication is Key: One of the most crucial aspects of these shoots is communication. You'll want to communicate extensively with all involved vendors. Over-communicate if necessary! Keep the vision on track, ensure expectations and deliverables are clear, and make sure everyone knows their roles and responsibilities.

  1. Execution Matters: On the day of the shoot, treat it with the same level of professionalism as a wedding day. Arrive early, and maintain clear and concise communication with the team to ensure everything runs smoothly.

  1. Know Your Deliverables: Understand what is expected of you and the other vendors involved. Clear expectations are vital for a successful shoot.

Are you considering investing in your business development and portfolio by attending an editorial, content day, or styled shoot designed by another industry professional? We’ve got a few tips for you too!

  1. Ask to see a mood board prior to purchasing a ticket. You want to make sure the vision aligns with your brand.

  2. Look for wedding photographers you admire and would value learning from. See if they offer mentoring, coaching, and/or produce editorials, content days, or styled shoots that you can invest in.

One of our favorite coaching offerings we have is a completely unique and personalized experience: a 1:1 personalized workshop and styled shoot. We’ll work with you to produce a styled shoots tailored to specific needs of your brand and what you specifically need. This personalized approach helps photographers enhance their portfolios and skills. If this is something that you’d like to learn more about, be sure to apply for our coaching experience.
