A Special Presentation 163: Annie: A Royal Adventure
Can’t get enough Annie? Are you an Annie-maniac, zany to the max? Well, you’re in luck, because they finally made a sequel to the beloved 1982 musical! Except the whole cast is different. And we skipped WWII entirely. And it’s in England. And there’s a mad scientist, a fortune teller, a suspicious man with an eye patch, the Lost Boys, drugged milk, an explosive rocket, a plan to blow up Buckingham Palace, and a plastic substitute that can be used for evil… a lot goes on! And then they sing Tomorrow!

A Special Presentation 162: Felix: The Cat: The Movie! Featuring: Glumdrop!
Did you ever watch a movie and think “They should have just published a ‘The Art Of…’ book and not finished the movie”? That’s Felix all over! Although Mike was unable to join for this podcast, he did thankfully cry a magical golden jellybean that summoned Glumdrop, whose bag of tricks includes the webcomic Pizzadventures and the creepypasta novel Joy Traveler, to help Ethan tread water through a sea of really good goobs and remarkably little story continuity.

In a previous episode, we revealed that Timer made his debut in TV special that taught you all about physical health. Well, Timer came back... this time he's teaching us about MENTAL health! Sort of! In the early 90s, in the wake of The Simpsons, all the other networks  decided that they also wanted some hot adult animated sitcoms. Capitol  Critters was born out of that desire. It's about vermin living under the  White House and, while it was never able to make the topical political  jokes its premise demanded, it made up for that short-coming with  BAFFLING RACISM.

Where do the toys come from? Have you ever wondered that? Well, some toys wonder that. We're back discussing France's favorite short king, Asterix the Gaul. Last time, we spoke about the first Asterix film, which series creators Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were not consulted about and which they hated so much that they got the potential sequel scrapped. But this later film, Asterix and the 12 Tasks, DID involve Goscinny and Uderzo and it's one of the most beloved of the Asterix films. Is it that good? Let's take a look!

Mike decided to do something very stupid and did a deep dive on Twitter into 22 years of the webcomic Sinfest by Tatsuya Ishida, the famous early 00s dude bro comic that did a hard turn into sex negative second wave feminism in 2011 and then a harder turn into TERF maga chud Q-anon anti-vax lunacy in 2019. But could Sinfest be saved? In this episode, we talk about the trajectory of the webcomic itself as well as our suggestions for how to mold this mess into something that might work as an animated holiday special.

126: FLASHBACK! The Value Mountain Trail (& Marshall Visits the Hospital)
Your hosts Mike and Ethan are no strangers to weird children’s books, as any fan of our coloring books episode knows. (Are there any?) This week we look back at 2018, a more innocent, pre-pandemic world, when the two hosts got together in the real world to record some fun videos about locally published children’s books! First we have a short subject about Marshall the dog (or is he?) going on a tour of a lollipop-filled hospital, followed by a cowboy adventure which stars JACK PALANCE! …or it would if we had the accompanying CD, which we don’t.

UNAIRED PILOT! Garfield: A to Z Zoo
Way back in 2018, Mike and Ethan were messing around with some YouTube videos, and got into a huge digression about comic strips. That’s right, the podcast that always digresses from comic strips started as a digression INTO them! Witness the sticky conception and awkward birth of Special Presentation as we take you through our very first comic strip adaption: Garfield A to Z Zoo, one of the richest fonts of weirdness that Garfield’s world has to offer. A Special Presentation 124: The Dreamer of Oz
Last week we looked at the comic strip Queer Visitors from the Land of Oz, so this week we're looking at a biopic of that strip's creator: L. Frank Baum. This made-for-TV movie starring John Ritter and Rue McClanahan was a favorite of Ethan's as a kid, so we see if it holds up.  How much fiction does it mix with fact? Well, one thing is for sure: L. Frank Baum was DEFINITELY an old west gunslinger.

A Special Presentation 123: Queer Visitors from the Land of Oz
After L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz was a book and a play and a musical extravaganza, it was also a comic strip. Your favorite characters the scarecrow, the tin woodsman, the...uh... Jack Pumpkinhead, the gump, and (in theory) the wogglebug escape from Oz and encounter mundane real world situations where they dispense trivia. Queer Visitors from the Land of Oz originated the most popular meme of '04 to '05 "What did the wogglebug say?" Sources say it was popular, apparently. Times were different.

A Special Presentation 112: Garfield's Pet Force (2 of 2)
This week, we return to the universe of Garfield Gets Real to watch the  final leg in this trilogy of insanity, Garfield's Pet Force. In this  one, there's ANOTHER alternate universe where Garfield exists as a  superhero named Garzooka but, in the cartoon world of the real garfield,  Garzooka is a comic book character. What happens when Garzooka breaks  into the cartoon world and also there's a gun that scrambles your  molecules and combines you with other things. Mike watched this on  shrooms so he's not sure how much of this is real, but luckily Ethan was  saber so he can explain.

110: Halloween Special Party 2: Return To Camp Halloween Specials Lake
Oh, I’m sure you’ve heard the stories… exactly one year ago today, a bunch of podcasters got together, in this very spot, to watch Halloween specials and rate them good or bad. In fact, some say they’re still here to this day, watching things like The Witch Who Turned Pink, Casper’s Halloween, The Crown of Bogg, and even short subjects like Mysterious Mose, Face Like A Frog, and Swing You Sinners! As a matter of fact…. THEY’RE RIGHT BEHIND YOU! (Extra special thanks once again to Morbiose for added spooky ambience touches!)

If you lived through the 1980s, then you probably remember Timer, a dancing, uh, apparently a lemon? Wearing a stovepipe hat? And singing about healthy eating? Well, he was a thing.  But what was the origin of Timer? Well, turns out he came from this 1973 TV movie where he takes two children on a magical tour of their Uncle Carl's body like it's Osmosis Jones or something.

A Special Presentation 108: The Scrabble People
So back in the days of yore, there used to be Scrabble games in the newspaper, next to the Junior Jumble and the Bridge. That's enough for us to justify this: A Halloween special with the Scrabble People, a failed attempt to market Scrabble to kids. Kids didn't go for it, cuz no one likes a game that tries to teach you stuff!

A Special Presentation 104: The Wizard of Id
You all know the Wizard of Id, right? It's that classic comic by Johnny Hart and Brant Parker that definitely takes up space in the newspaper. Since everyone loves it so much, it might surprise you to know that there were not one but TWO attempted adaptions of this comic, one in cartoon form by Abe Levitow and one in puppet form by Jim Henson. We look at them both.

Wow!!!!! Can you believe we've been doing this show for 100 episodes? To celebrate, we're mixing it up by looking at a comic property that NEVER got adapted. It's Garfield's Judgement Day, the story that Jim Davis hoped Disney would turn into a theatrical film! Spoiler: They didn't. You know Archy the cockroach from all those old Scholastic books about 'Insects Do the Strangest Things' where they were desperate to think of a famous cockroach to name check. Archy and his pal Mehitabel, the slutty cat, were characters created by newspaper columnist Don Marquis in 1906.  Many collections of Archy and Mehitabel stories were illustrated by George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat. And that's enough excuse to watch the very 70s Archy and Mehitabel adaptation, Shinbone Alley!

Li’l Abner, the comic that codified all the hillbilly tropes, shaped the culture your grandparents knew from whole cloth and then vanished from sight! Speaking of which, Mike has also vanished due to technical difficulties, so Ethan managed to nab friend of the show “Morbiose” Lyndsey to share her experiences as a longtime Li’l Abner fan, including the crushingly sad story of the feud between Al Capp and Ham Fisher. A Special Presentation 63: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
A Special Presentation 63: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
It's the holiday season, so we're looking at some holiday specials! Today we watched Rankin Bass' The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, based on a book by L. Frank Baum. And since there WAS a comic strip, Queer Visitors from the Land of Oz, based on a different L. Frank Baum book... what the heck, we'll count it. L. Frank Baum was never content to rely on pre-existing canon for his stories, so of course his take on Santa is extremely unique.

A Special Presentation 62: with Special Guest Buzz Dixon!
This week, we thought we would look at Fabulous Funnies, a 70s Filmation series that brought all the best comic strips of the 20s to life! So we thought, why not get the scoop from someone who was actually there? Veteran cartoon writer Buzz Dixon, most famous for his work on GI Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, Inhumanoids, Jem, Cowboys of Moo Mesa, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and literally EVERY cartoon of the 1980s, was gracious enough to sit down with us for a conversation about his first writing gig... and also the inner workings of 1980s animation, the body horror of Turbo Teen, the Q*Bert Show that could have been, and (of course) The Little Clowns of Happytown.

And it turns out that we have A LOT to say about Zippy the Pinhead. Join us for a discussion of this weird music video and also all things Zippy from the Zippy the Pinhead stage play to the secret history of San Francisco's Doggy Diner.

Welcome back to the podcast where Mike and Ethan talk about adaptations  of newspaper comics into other mediums. Did you know that before he was a  children's author Dr. Seuss was a newspaper cartoonist? A political  cartoonist, technically, but it still counts for our mandate! Because we  declare it to be so! We thought to look at one of two Seuss cartoons  that wasn't based on a pre-existing property, Pontoffel Pock, Where are You?  It's about this guy and his flying piano.

A Special Presentation 56: Halloween with the New Addams Family
A Special Presentation 56: Halloween with the New Addams Family
It's the Addams Family! They're creepy AND they're kooky and altogether ooky. Ten years after the 1960s series ended, the original cast got back together for this special Halloween reunion that involves a Great Pumpkin analogue, a long-lost twin brother, a pair of super oiled up body builders (it doesn't really make sense in context), and (of course) some criminals trying to steal the Addams fortune. Is it a low point for the Addams as a media franchise? Well.Maybe.  Join us as Mike and Ethan remember the Addams Family on this Halloween season.

Mike and Ethan continue a month of Halloween coverage with the classic Peanuts special that has defined Halloween for generations, with all the great bits that you know and love -- the Great Pumpkin, the jerkfaces who give Charlie Brown rocks during trick or treat (???) and Snoopy's WW I flying ace delusions. What a weird special.  In retrospect, Peanuts is bizarre.

This week, Mike (@bitterkarella) and Ethan (@Gtron) look at a fogotten cartoon series pilot, Carlton Your Doorman. WTF??? What does this have to do with comics? Well, Carlton Your Doorman is based on the character of Carlton the doorman from Rhoda, the phenomenally popular unseen character who was the first ever role of Lorenzo Music, the man who would eventually portray Garfield. But now it's all better!  So join Mike (@bitterkarella) and Ethan (@Gtron) for another discussion about a comic strip's misguided stab at animation.  This week we look at It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown.  It's a thing that absolutely exists and we have no idea why, but if you want to see Charles Schultz' daughter interact with Snoopy's brother Spike ala Roger Rabbit, well, then this is your thing.  Music courtesy  of @morbiomatic! A Special Presentation 16: A BC Thanksgiving and A BC Christmas
It's the podcast where Mike (@bitterkarella) and Ethan (@Gtron) discuss animated specials based on newspaper comic strips. This week, we're looking Johnny Hart's BC specials, because, believe it or not, there was a point in time when BC had enough cultural cache that people were willing to watch not just one but TWO terrible specials based on that property. But wait, how can there be a Christmas special when the title explains that it takes place in the BC era? WHAT THE?!?!? I hope someone got fired for that blunder!  Music courtesy  of @morbiomatic! Welcome to episode 9 of A Special Presentation or Alf will Not be Seen Tonight, the podcast where Mike (@bitterkarella) and Ethan (@Gtron)    discuss animated specials based on newspaper comic strips. It stars Garfield, thus making it thematic for our purposes. You should listen because, even though every youtube yokel has already published awful grating reaction videos to Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue wherein they pretend to be angrily shocked by its badness, our take is unique in that we're less annoying.
