Grace Week Day 4 - The Community of the Withered Hand

Grace Week Day 4 - The Community of the Withered Hand

Welcome to day four of Grace Week. We're almost to Good Friday. Before we get there, we need to pause and talk about the Community of the Withered Hand. By now you might have considered standing up and showing your hand. If you have, let me be the first to welcome you here. I hope you receive that like a warm hug. I hope that someday we can have a community where we are not ashamed but rather welcomed to share our struggles. This is day four of Grace Week.

Grace Week Day 3 - The Truth About Me

Grace Week Day 3 - The Truth About Me

Today we continue our series for Grace Week with maybe the deepest episode of the week. Today we talk about "The Truth About Me." Pete Wilson shared the truth about him in his sermon (Episode 275) so today, I shared mine as well. This was pulled from a blog post I wrote back in 2010 called "I Hope You See Jesus." Pete and I discuss how sharing our truth, and exposing our hand gives others to do the same. We also discuss how we are not where we want to be but we are not where we were. We close with another song from Tori and Shanua.

Grace Week Day Two - Stretch Out Your Hand

Grace Week Day Two - Stretch Out Your Hand

Today is day two of Grace Week. Yesterday Pete Wilson talked about getting up and standing. Identifying your shame. Today we're going to unpack stretching it out so others can see it. We're going to discuss what it's like to be in a community where your circle and others can either accept it and love you, or not. The grace of Good Friday covers your withered hand. I am praying for anyone that hears this and the community around you as you share yours with your circle too.

Episode 265 | Kim Emch - Festa - Season of Giving

Episode 265 is with Kim Emch from Festa.

  • Ending poverty through life changing relationships.
  • Passionate about helping children and families in poverty – many are New Americans, and many live in suburbs.
  • Connect neighbors to build relationships that end poverty, in this generation!

I’m a servant of God because He rescued me.

By the time I was 17, I had lived through five divorces by my two parents: one being an alcoholic, and one having an affair. I didn’t grow up facing financial poverty, but my home was filled with chaos and pain. But God did not forget me; He rescued me. He sent people from a local church who invited me every single week to a youth program they hosted. It was full of joy and peace. It was a safe refuge. They cared about me, loved me, and taught me about the Lord. They said,

“Kim, the God of the universe made you and He loves you. You’re gifted and talented.”

“Kim, you’re smart. Have you ever thought of going to college?”

“Kim, you have leadership abilities. We could hone that for you. We can grow that in you and God could use you for his plans for His future.”

They started casting a vision for me of a future where I would use my gifts and talents to serve God.

Fast-forward to March 2007. I prayed and asked the Holy Spirit to light my heart on fire in a whole new way. Eleven short days later, I learned there were 2,158 children facing poverty in my own suburban community. I had been tutoring children facing poverty in downtown Columbus for years, but I had no idea that my neighbors – children in MY town who went to school with my own children – were also facing poverty. The free or reduced school lunch program came screeching to an abrupt halt for 12 weeks every summer, and those children went hungry. I felt a call on my life to love, serve and feed them body, mind and spirit, and to bring the body of Christ alongside me.

I’d never even heard of a free summer lunch program, but I felt compelled to try. God gave me a big, loud mouth, so I used it to tell anyone who would listen to me. I talked to church communities, businesses, civic associations, and my friends and neighbors. I urged them to come together to feed these children, and we did exactly that; 178 of us served 246 children that summer with 2,376 lunches.

Before March 2007, my circle was the opposite of diverse. Everyone I knew was exactly like me; they looked, talked and dressed like me. Suddenly, I was looking into the faces of beautiful, gifted and talented children and their amazing parents who came from all walks of life. They were diverse in every sense of the word: racially, socially, economically, culturally, and religiously. I found myself compelled to love them even more.

They began sharing heart-breaking stories. One family saved up to buy a car that broke down before they even got home, and they became entwined in a legal battle.  Parents struggled to get jobs and put food on the table for their families because they couldn’t speak English well enough. Children were falling behind in school because parents couldn’t help them with homework.

We kept helping and serving and living life together. God sent me to places that nothing in my previous life experience prepared me for. He guided me into homes and into hearts. I constantly said, ‘God, I’m not the right one. You’ve got to bring someone else. You have to bring more people.’ He ALWAYS brought more people. And we started creating these spaces where we gathered people to learn from each other. In the summer, it was a camp, and in the school year, an ESL Family program.

I realized that God was using me to create spaces of refuge – the same kind of spaces He created to rescue me in decades past.

Episode 259 | Timothy Mahoney - God of Heaven and Earth

Episode 259 | Timothy Mahoney - God of Heaven and Earth

Episode 259 is with Timothy Mahoney, creator of Bible Cinema Roadshow and Patterns of Evidence Films.

Timothy Mahoney is the award-winning director of six feature films: Patterns of Evidence: Mt Sinai I & II, Patterns of Evidence: The Red Sea Miracle I & II, Patterns of Evidence: The Moses Controversy, and Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus. Tim is the founder of Thinking Man Films and Media, a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based international documentary & publishing company. Tim has spent almost 20 years exploring some of the biggest questions of the Bible and what they mean for our world today. His insatiable curiosity led him on a journey across the world interviewing some of the world’s leading Bible scholars, archaeologists, and historians to seek answers. What he’s uncovered is an amazing pattern of evidence that matches the events recorded in the Bible. Tim was raised hearing that the stories in the Bible were true, but as he got older he was challenged to lose those beliefs. These questions led him on a trip to Egypt and the very location of the  Exodus story. It was there that he experienced his own crisis of faith when told there was no evidence for this account. Undeterred, he had to know – were these foundational stories in the Bible true or not? This led him on a 12-year investigation resulting in the feature documentary Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus. This award-winning film and its companion book, Patterns of Evidence: A Filmmaker’s Journey challenged the traditional views of biblical criticism, demonstrating archaeological evidence that matched the Bible’s narrative. The balanced approach allowed audiences to decide for themselves if the Exodus was truth or myth. A native Minnesotan, Tim’s hobbies include folk music and outdoor activities. Tim and Jill have been married for 40 years. They have four (4) married children and eight (8) grandchildren.

GOD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH is a feature-length documentary coming to theaters November 5th-6th. It offers incredibly compelling evidence of what the Star of Bethlehem was and what the Magi saw that caused them to travel more than 700 miles to Israel. Additional content provides evidence for the date and circumstance of Christ’s crucifixion.

This is the first installment in Thinking Man Film’s Bible Cinema Roadshow, a year-long theatrical film series designed to bring Biblical content to your community all year long via theaters.

Episode 248 | Brad Minns - Never Give Up

Episode 248 | Brad Minns - Never Give Up

Episode 248 is special on many levels. First of all, my lovely bride Heather joins me for the first time ever on an unscripted episode. There’s a reason for that. Heather works in the deaf culture. She has worked in this culture since graduating from college years ago. It is her passion, her love and her heart.

Today’s guest is a man named Brad Minns.

Brad is the subject of a book called “Never Give Up” and a film of the same name that releases in September. His story, of winning a gold medal in the deaf olympics in 1985 is incredible. But that is not all.

Our interview with Brad is incredible. Brad’s entire life is incredible. The interview is long so I encourage you to break it up into smaller segments. Press pause. Come back to it.

Brad has lived an extraordinary life. I am better today because I met Brad Minns earlier today.

I promise you will be challenged and changed.

Check out nevergiveupfilm.com and bradminns.com for this amazing new friend of ours. Please listen all the way through. Take it in segments. Hear his heart. Hear his story. Read his book and see the film.

Never give up!

Brad was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 9, 1965. At the age of three he lost his hearing when he contracted a deadly fever. Rather than send him to special schools, his parents made sure Brad knew how to read lips and had him fitted with hearing aids.

He began playing sports and found that he had an interest in tennis, which he began to participate in more and more. He went on to become one of the top junior players in his age division and received a scholarship at the University of Toledo as a walk-on. The only difference between Brad and his teammates was the fact that he could hear the cheers of the crowds who came to watch him play. After college he went on to become the USA’s number one deaf tennis player and won numerous World Deaf Championships. He also helped the USA to win its first ever Dreese Cup in 1995.

Not being content with just playing professional tennis at the World level, he began using his body building in earnest. In 1995 he won the PAS / Experimental and Applied Sciences nutritional supplement transformation contest now known as Body-For-Life and became their second national spokesperson.  His bodybuilding success earned him various modeling jobs including being Nordic Flex’s cover model and appearing in their national advertising campaign.

Brad has always met his goals and is now determined to teach others how to go for their dreams.  Today, he lives with his wife Ginny in Orlando, FL and works as a tennis professional and personal trainer.  He speaks at FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) groups where he shares his testimony of living a life for Christ.

Episode 243 | Demi Michelle Schwartz

Episode 243 | Demi Michelle Schwartz

Episode 232 is with my friend Demi Michelle Schwartz. Demi is a singer/songwriter and author. She returns to update us on all of the latest projects and things she is working on. You will love her fun spirit and fearless goals.
From her website -
Demi Michelle Schwartz is an author from Pittsburgh, PA. She’s loved reading Young
Adult Mysteries and Thrillers from a young age, and she’s inspired by the work of Sara Shepard and Karen M. McManus. Being drawn to these thrilling and twisty novels for the YA audience eventually led her to step into the shoes of an author herself.
There’s something so enchanting about these stories that pulls her in, beyond the clues,
red herrings, and dangerous twists and turns. She’s drawn in by the realism and truth that these stories are ones that could happen. There’s so much to be gleaned from the way protagonists act and react in the face of danger and how a complex puzzle can lead to justice being served or the lingering feeling of the world still being slightly off-balance. So much can be learned about the human condition from these stories, and Demi continues to explore this concept both as a reader and author of crime fiction.
Demi earned both a BA in Creative Writing and BA in Music at Seton Hill University in
Greensburg, PA. With encouragement from her undergraduate English professors, she went on to pursue her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill and graduated with her degree in June of 2022. She has finished writing her debut YA Mystery novel and is currently seeking representation.
When Demi isn’t revising her second novel, a YA Psychological Thriller, she’s busy

Episode 241 | Erin Arnett - Festa Columbus

Episode 241 is with my neighbor and good friend Erin Arnett. We're both celebrating the graduation of our children (her first and my last) this week. Erin joined me for a much larger reason and that is to talk about the Festa-vul even in Hilliard in August. More about the event -
Columbus has many robust festivals celebrating individual countries and cultures, but this one will celebrate the entire community of Central Ohio together in one place. The event will put our richly diverse community on display and create opportunities to build relationships between people of all cultures, races, religions and backgrounds.

Episode 240 | Cristóbal Krusen - Director, Let Me Have My Son

Episode 240 | Cristóbal Krusen - Director, Let Me Have My Son

Epsideo 240 is one of the more emotional, personal and real episodes I have ever done. Cristobal Krusen, Director of the new film "Let Me Have My Son" joins me to discuss the film and his very personal connection.
Cristóbal Krusen was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, the third of four children. Early in life, he showed a keen interest in literature, reading many of the classics while still in grade school and cherishing the ambition that one day he would become a writer. He entered Harvard University in 1971, majoring in English literature, intent on making his mark as a poet and novelist. A growing interest in photography and filmmaking, however, led him to transfer to New York University where he changed majors and graduated with a BFA in Film and Television in 1976. He later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he received his MFA in Film in 1989.

Cristóbal founded Messenger Films in 1988 and has worked as a writer/director of film and television ever since, helming productions in more than twenty countries. He is best known for Final SolutionMore Than DreamsUndauntedSabina K. and most recently, Let Me Have My Son. Over the last several years, Cristóbal has also begun fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a writer. He is the author of UndauntedThey Were Christians, and Let Me Have My Son.

Working in multiple languages as a filmmaker, Cristóbal is known for a poetic visual style and the ability to draw intimate performances from actors. Above all, he is a “storyteller” who delights to engage his audience while addressing the deepest needs of the human heart.

Episode 239 | Jenny Lombardo - BHS Reunion

Episode 239 of the Unscripted Podcast is with my classmate from Bedford High School, Jenny Lombardo. In a rather odd twist, our classmates voted us "Most Outgoing" our senior year. The irony is that we are both wallflowers and didn't even know each other. Despite our introverted extrovert nature, and our struggles taking tests, we have both found our lanes in life. Jenny is a successful realtor with her husband Chris.

From her website:

Jenny and her husband Chris Lombardo are both licensed Realtors working as a team. They reside in Brunswick, Ohio with their two children Anthony and Aaden. As a married couple raising a family, they certainly understand the importance of home. This serves as the motivation to help families achieve their goals of home ownership. The first thing you'll notice with them is the superior customer service provided. Their attention to detail begins with first contact. They believe no detail is too small not to be considered in the real estate buying or selling process. Relationships are built with honesty and trust. These are the very foundation on which they conduct their business. They don't do transactions, they build relationships that last. Episode 238 | Ken Burke - Competing For Christ

Episode 238 | Ken Burke - Competing For Christ

Episode 238 is with my friend Ken Burke of the Competing For Christ Podcast. I had the honor of being on Ken's podcast about a month ago so he was kind enough to join me on Unscripted. He is a former college athlete, husband, podcaster and passionate about Christ. In this episode you will have the opportunity to get to know Ken better and her the story behind why he started his podcast.

You can find the Competing For Christ Podcast at this link - https://www.competingforchristpodcast.com/

From his website -

I didn't start the podcast for recognition, for fame, or for thousands of downloads. I started it to give Jesus recognition for the things he had done in my life through sports. I started it to bring Jesus the fame and to maybe even see people come to know Him because of something that was said on an episode. Even when I forgot to press record before filming an ENTIRE episode one time (yes, that really happened. Sorry Cassee Wood!), Jesus was always on my mind.

Sports have always been a huge part of my life. It was everything I thought about and what I lived for! But I didn't have my priorities right throughout most of my career. Instead of Jesus being at the forefront of my mind and instead of living for Him, I craved success, scholarships, and fame in a sports world that leaves you feeling dissatisfied, unworthy, and hurt. I realized after so many years of craving sports, they could NEVER leave me fulfilled. They could never bring me the true joy I feel with Jesus.

So many athletes struggle with this fact throughout their career. They struggle with wanting more and more in athletics, when they should be wanting more and more of Christ. That's why I started the podcast. It's for the athlete that doesn't know why their career ended early because of an injury. It's for the athlete that struggles with getting out of bed every morning because of the massive amounts of anxiety, depression, and sadness they feel every single day. It's for the athlete that wants to be a Christian influence on their teams, but doesn't know where to begin.

I was that athlete. I want to use this podcast not only to spread awareness of all the issues, problems, and topics that come up in sports, but to most importantly spread the Gospel and the good news that Christ provides. No matter what you're going through, no matter what you've done, Christ loves you and He is going to fight for you NO MATTER WHAT.

This quote completely summarizes what this podcast is about: "God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called." I may have no clue what I'm doing, but God does. I had no experience in podcasting, interviewing, researching, or networking, but God didn't care. He can use anyone for His purpose.

So that's what this podcast is about. It's not a perfect podcast, the people featured in each episode are sinners like everyone in this world, and I am a flawed, broken, crazy person. But my only hope through this podcast is for you, the listener, to know Jesus. To know that even (ESPECIALLY) in sports, Jesus is with you.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9

Episode 235 | This Stuff Doesn't Just Happen

Episode 235 | This Stuff Doesn't Just Happen

Hey everybody, this is Aaron. Listen, I want to tell you real quick, I don't have a guest to introduce today actually, but I do have a message for you and I hope if you stick with me to the end, it all makes sense. Normally, if you're watching a video, you know, I, I typically wear glasses. Actually, they're readers.

It's true. I'm of that age where I have to have readers, and so I've worn contacts my whole life. But I went to the eye doctor yesterday and I was explaining to him, I'm kind of in this in-between where do I just go all in and get glasses with bifocals or do I just go contacts? What are my options?

He explained to me that there was one thing we could try, and it's called monovision. And today I'm not wearing glasses. I actually have contact in one eye. That it's 3.75, and in my left eye it's like 1.75 or something. That's not my normal prescription. So if you stuck with me this long, listen to this.

Our brain can actually tell the difference between which eye it should use. So in other words, my brain can tell my eyes that it's far away. You need to look through this eye. If it's close, you need to look through this eye. Isn't that amazing? Maybe. Maybe. I'm just very simple-minded, but that's amazing.

It's amazing to me that our brain can actually distinguish on which eye it should use, and I've been doing this now for almost 24 hours and it's perfect. I don't need readers anymore, and I don't need glasses. I just had to tell you today that, um, I know a lot of times people think this just happened.

It's kinda like the birth of your first child. You, you're standing there in the, in the hospital room and there's just a moment where you say, that doesn't just happen. Uh, somebody's controlling all of this. Somebody thought all of this up, and that somebody is the same God that cares about what you're going through today.

Even if it's choosing or not that you need to use readers. Have a great week and we'll talk to you soon.
