My name is Evan Panagopoulos. I am an urban storyteller, an avid fan of brutalist and mid-century architecture, and a knowledgeable WW2 and Victorian era enthusiast.

I enjoy engaging with abandoned spaces and obscure history. I create and deliver alternative travel experiences, where I present amazing forgotten stories through well crafted oral, written, and audiovisual narratives.

I have produced audio versions of popular posts from my blog, Abandoned Sector, which you can visit at www.explorabilia.co.uk

The White Ship - H.P. Lovecraft

The White Ship - H.P. Lovecraft

The White Ship is a short story published by H.P. Lovecraft in 1927. It is perhaps my favourite story among his substantial body of fantastical work : not directly associated with the Cthulu mythology, the White ship becomes a parallel lore of its own, unique and mystical. It is an allegory for humanity's unquenchable curiosity, unbridled pride, and chasing impossible dreams.
.
It is a bit of a departure from creating podcasts out of my own content, but it's now been quite a while since I've recorded anything, and I've always wanted to narrate a gothic bedside story, so here it is ! I hope you will enjoy it, and that it will open up H.P. Lovecraft's imaginary worlds to you.

Dark Modernism : the forgotten story of an abandoned Jewish boarding school

The premises of a ground-breaking Jewish boarding school in England played an active role in both WW1 and WW2, and hide some rarely seen Modernist architecture – but also dark stories of child abuse.

The Pantheon of Energy : mythology and symbolism in Chernobyl

The Pantheon of Energy : mythology and symbolism in Chernobyl

Pripyat was a city steeped in symbolism and mythology long before it became widely known as a result of the 1986 Chernobyl accident. It is a place where socialism, youth, science, myth, and disaster weaved a tapestry of stories that have only become more powerful with time. Join me on this audio journey through the legends of the ghost city of Pripyat

Lair of the Wolfpack : the submarine base at Lorient & the Battle of the Atlantic

Lair of the Wolfpack : the submarine base at Lorient & the Battle of the Atlantic

In this episode, based on one of my more popular blog posts, I am revisiting the history of the Keroman U-boot base in Lorient, and the role it played in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War 2.

The episode incorporates real sound clips from the WW2 : German U-Boot diesel engines and torpedoes firing, a Flakvierling 38 firing, and the roaring sounds of Allied bombers carpet bombing Monte Cassino. There's a 1941 rendition of Lili Marlene by Phyllis Heymans, a gramophone recording of Milord by Edith Piaf, and a version of the U boot Lied, all  sourced from the Internet Archive (archive.org)

Cold War Confrontation : AEK Athens vs Slavia Praha, 1968

Cold War Confrontation : AEK Athens vs Slavia Praha, 1968

Listen to the audio version of a popular post from my blog, Abandoned Sector. This is the story of the 1968 basketball final between AEK Athens and Slavia Praha. What was the political significance of athletics during the Cold War confrontation between NATO and the Warsaw Pact ? And how did the Greek Junta capitalise on this unique sporting event.

___________________________________________________

includes actual audio clips from the 1968 event, television broadcasts from USSR basketball games of the 70s and announcements by the Greek Junta in 1967, sound recordings of tanks firing into crowds of demonstrators in Athens in 1974, short clips of contemporary music from Yiorgos Zambetas, and the anthem of the USSR.
