The Unselfish Art of Focusing on Yourself

The Unselfish Art of Focusing on Yourself

In this episode of Devi Deals With It, we present the question: what part of the day do you focus on yourself?

The results from the Happiness and Life Satisfaction survey study done by Our World in Data were discussed in regards to how one perceives their sense of self. The ultimate question from this study that was discussed in this episode was, "how happy are you?" Devi was inspired to perform her own mini experiment on social media and found that, of the population that answered the polls,:

  • Are you using your time wisely? 57% no
  • Do you think you take care of yourself enough? 73% no
  • Are you actively working on your personal goals? 50% no
  • Does it matter what others think of you? 69% no
  • Do you know what you want most out of life? 67% yes

These results are important in recognizing how the average person views their self. Devi raises the point that, if we took more care of ourselves, beyond the physical and mental level, then we would feel as though we used our time more wisely. If we all embarked on a spiritual path, we could boost our self-discovery and maturation path by a lot.

"When we do make time for our wants and needs, we are more alive to the world around us, more available, and more giving of our fullest selves."

Differing Perspectives

Differing Perspectives

In this episode of DDWI, we discuss the importance of being able to recognize a different perspective when we see one; just because someone else has a different take on a topic/question does not mean they are wrong or that their answer is bad. Once we grasp this concept that everyone perceives things differently, we will be one step closer to reducing unnecessary ignorance. One point to be emphasized is that some ignorance is natural, and we innately experience ignorance as humans because we are unique individuals. We learn and perceive in varied ways, so this ignorance is not to be taken negatively, as we all have some level of ignorance within us. Stay tuned for the next episode of Devi Deals With It!

Many people believe that time is an illusion or time doesn't matter, but as time moves in a linear fashion, so do we; we only have so much time to live the best life. Why wait until next year when you get that job promotion to be happy when you can do what's in your control to be happy now? Although happiness is not directly a choice, there are certainly many things we can control to influence our affective states.

Can We Control How We Feel?

Can We Control How We Feel?

In this episode, Devi discusses a modern term: toxic positivity. Spreading fake positivity and the notion that you can control how you feel both favor a falsely positive facade. The idea that “happiness is a choice” spreads a cheerfully false ideal. Essentially, it is important for us to distinguish between what we can control versus what is out of our control.
