S2E11 The Toxic Language of "Wellness Culture"

S2E11 The Toxic Language of "Wellness Culture"

In the penultimate episode of Season 2, I speak to Maxine Ali, a health writer, linguist and body image PhD researcher and she uses her platform to dissect the language of health and wellness, looking into its toxic and sexist sub-messaging. After falling hard into the clean eating culture whilst being a health journalist for a well-known women’s health magazine, Maxine left the industry in 2017 to refocus her writing and research.

Maxine and I discuss:

  • Gender disparities and the lack of visual representation of diverse body types in wellness culture - how this exacerbates insecurities and reinforces patriarchal ideals of beauty and femininity.
  • How the ‘self-improvement’ culture leads from the notion that the fault is always with the individual, never the institution or systems that uphold it
  • The ugly side to body positivity and toxic positivity in health communication.
  • How wellness culture reframes restriction and how to recognise when diet culture is silently co-opting the non-diet language

S2E10 Why You Need to Know About the Menopausal Transition

S2E10 Why You Need to Know About the Menopausal Transition

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Dr Jenn Salib Huber, dietitian, naturopathic doctor and intuitive eating coach. Jenn provides expert health and hormone support to women in midlife without a side of diet culture!

Every woman is going to go through menopause at some point in their life, often though it is coupled with trouble sleeping, multitasking, thinking straight and generally coping with everyday life. This can be very stressful and cause depressive symptoms for many women, along with losing zest for life, and many women resort to using antidepressants. So it’s about time we spoke about it!

Jenn and I discussed:

  • Barriers to discussing the menopause
  • What actually is menopause and peri-menopause?
  • Symptoms
  • Early menopause
  • The hormones involved
  • Eating well for the menopause
  • Alternative therapies to dealing with severe symptoms

PLEASE be sure to give this a review, rating, and share it with someone you think would enjoy it!

S2E6 Weights & Wine - can you do both?

S2E6 Weights & Wine - can you do both?

With a long-standing family history involved in selling wine, Elliot Awin now too works in the wine trading industry, running a wine importing business with his father @abswine, and is one of four founding members of the successful sell-out organic wine from Provence @qvvines

Elliot was also a keen rugby player, but almost 7 years ago now, everything changed. He woke up in the middle of the night with his heart rate racing ~220 beats a minute. After being told to go straight to A&E by the GP, and after seeing many different cardiologists, he was later diagnosed with Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), Atrial fibrillation (AF), and Wolff-Parkinson-White-Syndrome, a heart condition that causes the heart to beat abnormally fast for periods of time.

Elliot was recently fitted with a Pacemaker in 2020 and subsequently had to stop playing rugby, but this has not stopped Elliot from partaking in competitive sport, as he is now training to row across the Atlantic, alone….

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why wine?
  • Passion for rugby and competitive sport
  • When everything changed with a heart condition diagnosis
  • Elliot’s current exercise regime and finding a new love for CrossFit
  • Discipline + training for the world’s toughest rowing race across the Atlantic Ocean in 2023
  • Finding the balance through ‘conscious consumption'

Confused as to what wine to pick up off the shelf in a supermarket, or what to take to your next dinner party? Elliot hosts weekly social wine tasting or more structured private sessions to demystify wine in any way he can, Find full details here: https://elliot.wine/bookings

In this episode, I speak with Dr Heather Mckee who breaks down why this is and how we can start to make healthy habits stick, in manageable and sustainable ways.

Heather has a keen interest in the psychology behind what motivates people to adopt and stick to health goals and completed her PhD in Weight Loss Behaviour Change Psychology at the University of Birmingham. Her fascinating research was focused on how to set goals that lead to lasting changes and discovering the key strategies for long-term healthy lifestyle success.

We discuss:

  • Motivation to change
  • Willpower is a depletable resource
  • The Goal Dilution Effect

S1E11 Eating Disorders Part 2

S1E11 Eating Disorders Part 2

This year has been so awfully hard for so many, but especially for those suffering from eating disorders and disordered eating.

This week’s podcast episode with @katiebarb was a real eye-opening connection and discovery of a shared struggle with disordered eating. Katie’s personal journey began with recovering from an eating disorder and she now helps those with a messy relationship with food and their body, uncovering and detangling the subconscious roots of self-sabotaging behaviour in a gentle, loving way.

Katie is a writer, cartoonist, comedian, life coach, occupational therapist and author of her new memoir Fed Up @fedupthebook

We discuss...

  • eating disorders intensification during lockdown
  • Katie’s own story and recovery
  • how we all carry trauma in our own way
  • generational burdens
  • pressures to look a certain way
  • the poem: Love After Love by Derek Walcott
  • and so much more in between!

If there is someone you know who is suffering, then please share this with them!

S1E8 The Damaging Effects of Dieting & Ditching Diet Culture

S1E8 The Damaging Effects of Dieting & Ditching Diet Culture

Are you a serial dieter? Have you tried “every diet” but each one has somehow failed you? Do you want to end the emotional eating, the toxic shame and harmful guilt? Diet culture tells us weight is a behaviour, that it is all down to us as individuals, but diet culture is not accounting for systems and structures that are entrenched in our society!

In this episode, I sit down with Melissa Eaton, a non-diet Dietitian & Nutritionist, PhD student, and former teacher and dancer from Sydney, Australia. We discuss how nutrition is more than just calories, why the language we use around food is SO important and the fu**ed up messages diet culture feeds us everyday of our lives., as well as dispelling some confusing nutrition advice! This is such an incredible chat, with so many important messages to be heard.

S1E7 Letting go of Expectations, Building Resilience & Reconstructing your Negative Self-Talk

S1E7 Letting go of Expectations, Building Resilience & Reconstructing your Negative Self-Talk

Today I am joined by the delightful Hazel Antiporta. Hazel is a Healing and Transformation coach, working as a certified Hypnotherapist, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and Time Techniques Practitioner.

Our brains absorb messages from the world around us. When society and our close circle of family or friends measure us against their rules, those ideals settle into our unconscious thoughts, like a popular song set on repeat, this criticism becomes the basis of how we view ourselves as adults. You might not even realise what tone your self-criticism takes until you become mindful of it...

In this episode you will learn:

➡️ How to develop awareness for your behaviour and thoughts to challenge limiting beliefs, and quieten that critical inner voice.

➡️ Remove harmful words from your vocabulary and creating new thoughts of compassion and understanding.

➡️ Why we often see our self-worth attached to how others perceive our accomplishments, and how to value our inherent worth as a person.

S1E4 Fibre, How to Eat More Plant-based Foods & Supplementation

In this episode, I'm joined by Rebecca Stevens (ANutr, MSc), founder of Nourish & Nurture Nutrition to support sustainable, healthy eating for everyday life, based on evidence-based nutrition. Rebecca is anti-diet, guided by the research that highlights the importance of sustainable healthy eating practices and lifestyle adjustments rather than restricting foods or food groups. Her areas of focus include pregnancy, post-natal, weaning and family nutrition. As a mother of three young children (5, 6 & 8), I have first-hand experience of the importance of eating well during these life stages and I am well-practised in feeding hungry kids in a healthy yet convenient way!

Before returning to university to study for an MSc in Human Nutrition, Rebecca spent over ten years in the world of healthcare PR. Transferring this skill set to the nutrition/food sector, she combines her PR agency experience with a creative and flexible approach to projects.

This episode will highlight the importance of fibre consumption and eating more plants in our diets, what to consider when choosing which milk to drink, protein consumption as a vegan and when supplementation is necessary!

S1E3 Self Compassion and Perspective; Your Superpowers for 2021.

S1E3 Self Compassion and Perspective; Your Superpowers for 2021.

My most recent chat with Neil Flatman of The Mohawk Sheep Meditation Company was heartwarming and inspiring. Neil is a qualified secular meditation teacher and NLP practitioner, and an all-round good egg. He is also in the process of a year-long qualification with the Zen Buddhist teacher, the Rev Angel Kyodo Williams, based in the USA.

Whilst we can't see the mindset muscle grow as much as a quad or bicep, little emotional fitness exercises play a huge part in building our resilience, allowing us the freedom to feel comfortable and safe in our own skin to take on whatever challenges life throws at us.

Research shows that meditation can help us to become fine-tuned and clearer in our heads and feel more spacious in our minds, by turning off the sympathetic system (fight-or-flight) and turning on the vagus nerve and parasympathetic system (rest and digest).

This episode will help you to gain more awareness of your behaviours, feelings, and emotions, learning how to channel and transform them in more productive ways.
