ABCs of Disability Planning

By ABCs of Disability Planning

Frequently families like mine don't know what's available to help us, we're too focused on getting through our day-to-day. But even if we had time, we would need to know what to look for. It's my mission to introduce a new organization or individual serving those with disabilities every week.

All views and opinions represented are my own. I am not writing on behalf of Capital Motion or Visible National Trust. Neither Capital Motion nor Visible National Trust endorse or in any other way support this content and podcast. This podcast is wholly owned and operated by me, Eric Jorgensen.

Fighting for disability rights and disability justice in 14 states - New Disabled South

Fighting for disability rights and disability justice in 14 states - New Disabled South

New Disabled South, and their advocacy arm, New Disabled South Rising, are fighting for disability rights and justice in 14 states. Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The 10 Principles of Disability Justice

Source: Sins Invalid

Intersectionality: Many disabled people experience other forms of oppression in addition to ableism. The experience of disability is shaped by race, gender, class, and more.

Leadership of the most impacted: The most oppressed lead our movement because they know the most about how systems of oppression work.

Anti-capitalist politic: We don’t conform to capitalist systems that profit from us. Human worth does not rely on how much a person can produce.

Commitment to cross-movement organizing: We work with other movements to shift views on ableism and disability.

Recognizing wholeness: We have value beyond capitalist standards of work. Disabled people are whole people.

Sustainability: We work at a pace that promotes ongoing justice and liberation and values the teachings of our lives and bodies.

Commitment to cross-disability solidarity: We join together to accomplish more. Isolation harms us all.

Interdependence: We help each other achieve liberation for all living systems and the land. Government solutions control us more.

Collective access: We share the responsibility to create community with each other by making access a way of life for all.

Collective liberation: No one is left behind; we need each other to achieve freedom.

Hospice Navigation: The Compassionate Guide to End-of-Life Care

Hospice Navigation: The Compassionate Guide to End-of-Life Care

Death is scary. No one wants to talk about it, and most of us aren't ready when it comes. It feels like the medical profession has made it their mission to delay the end of life, no matter the cost of pain and suffering. You have the right to go out on your terms, by choosing not to see further aggressive treatments. Hospice is an underutilized resource paid for by insurance and available in all 50 states and DC.

When dealing with a serious illness, having access to the right resources and guidance can make all the difference. Hospice Navigation Services is here to offer just that – a compassionate hand to hold and a reliable compass to help navigate this challenging journey.

Who can benefit from a Hospice Navigation Services session? If you're:

  • dealing with a serious illness
  • a caregiver who needs information about hospice care for someone you love
  • needing education about end-of-life care
  • a patient or caregiver with questions about your current hospice care
  • needing to discuss advance care planning

Here's what Hospice Navigation Services has to offer:

The Lucas Project: Recognition & Respite for Special Needs Families

The Lucas Project: Recognition & Respite for Special Needs Families

The Lucas Project provides recognition, respite, and resources to family caregivers of those with special needs.

16.3 million People in the U.S. are caregivers to a child with special needs.

That number is staggering and also a wake-up call.  Most of us know of someone who is caring for a child with special needs and if you don’t personally know of someone, you can be assured that they are in your neighborhood; probably hiding behind closed doors isolated and exhausted.

Caregivers often project the perception that “everything is okay,” when in fact, it probably is not okay and they would so appreciate having someone reach out and lend a hand.  It is our job as a society to surround these caregivers and support them through the difficult times, because a child is only as healthy as the caregiver, and society is only as healthy as the families within it. At The Lucas Project, we care for the caregivers.

Introducing the NR2F1 Foundation

Introducing the NR2F1 Foundation

NR2F1 Foundation's mission is to support those impacted by an NR2F1 mutation, aka Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome through education, advocacy, and research.

BBSOAS, also known as Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder caused by a disruption in the NR2F1 gene. BBSOAS is characterized by a wide array of clinical features, but the most common are vision impairment caused by optic atrophy, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. There are currently a few hundred known cases of BBSOAS worldwide with diagnoses rapidly increasing every month.

The phenotypic spectrum of Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome (BBSOAS) is broad and variable, but the most well-established characteristics include developmental delay/intellectual disability and visual impairment (including optic nerve atrophy, optic nerve hypoplasia, and cortical visual impairment). Other common features include hypotonia, oromotor dysfunction, and mild and inconsistent dysmorphic facial features. Morphological changes in brain structures including thinning of the corpus callosum, and autism spectrum disorder are also considered common. Individuals are at an elevated risk of seizures, including infantile spasms.

Genotype-phenotype correlations have been proposed, with individuals with mutations in the DBD typically showing a more severe phenotype, and individuals with whole-gene deletions and truncating mutations tending to have moderate to mild symptoms. Individuals with point mutations outside of the DBD most often manifest the mildest phenotype.

BBSOAS is considered a static encephalopathy and has not been shown to be progressive/degenerative. There is no progression of the eye phenotype known, including no known progression of optic atrophy.

The Caregiver's Journey with Sue Ryan

The Caregiver's Journey with Sue Ryan

Episode Transcript: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BEe8i7gtN0tD4OZo6lzNcc5_omk3L_Ka/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=117716030289987185197&rtpof=true&sd=true

Sue Ryan knows what it feels like to be standing at the edge of the abyss in our life – or to be down in the abyss – not knowing where to turn, what to do, or who to talk with.

She navigated the transition from being the adoring daughter of my hero, my Dad, to a journey with him as a caregiver through his diagnosis of a type of Dementia.

She's navigated the transition from being a consistent top performer in her company and achieving the highest recognition, to realizing it wasn’t where she wanted to be, having no idea where to turn, what to do, or who to talk with.

She navigated the journey of being single into her late forties in a career that had her traveling frequently and doing what she wanted when she wanted, to falling in love and marrying Jack – the love of her life – becoming part of his large family, embracing his desire to retire, move, and travel.

She navigated the transition from being the loving wife and partner with Jack, to our being told he was now an Alzheimer’s patient and I was now his caregiver – the path we’ve been journeying together for the past eleven years until his death in 2023.

She navigated the transition from living her life being who she thought others wanted her to be, to discovering who she's meant to be, recreating her life, and living with joy from the highest expression of who she is. She's become the master of transitions and is here to help you become the master of yours.

She doesn't want your transitions to be as difficult as hers were or take you as long to learn how to intentionally – and successfully – navigate them as it took her.

Introducing "The Emotionally Naked Podcast"

Introducing "The Emotionally Naked Podcast"

AutismDadvocate.org is an online support forum for dads with children with autism and about the commonalities we all face as fathers.

Frequently, fathers follow the American tradition of rugged individualism and rarely have an honest and earnest discussion on the challenges of fatherhood.  What does it mean to be an engaged father?  What are the tensions and polarities we all face as fathers?  And why do we so often soldier forward alone?

A Zebra's Guide to Disability Advocacy

A Zebra's Guide to Disability Advocacy

Sarah Semnyetzky is the author of "A Zebra's Guide to Disability Advocacy". Focusing specifically on the domains of academia, medical care, and interpersonal relationships and support networks, in the book Sarah focuses on helping disabled individuals and their loved ones navigate their own, diverse journeys.

She explores these topics using her personal and professional experience, and insight into the complexities of the disabled community. She analyzes how these complexities impact our needs as disabled individuals, using step-by-step guidance, detailed explanations, and personal anecdotes to illustrate her points. She also includes a specialized guide for those with ADHD, imparting impactful advice and skill-building techniques to help readers thrive in academia, the workplace, and beyond.
In this episode, I ask her to share what's happened since she published her book. What she's learned, and what, if anything, she would have done differently. My goal is to share the perspective of someone with invisible disabilities and help you see the world from at least one person's point of view.

How will I know? The "impossible choice" - Palliative or Hospice Care

How will I know? The "impossible choice" - Palliative or Hospice Care

Juli and Chris Henderson have lived through one of the toughest times any parent can face, the loss of their son. In this interview, we have a very candid discussion about what they wish they'd known. The catalyst for this discussion was Juli's blog post "How will I know?".

Dr. Chris Henderson is a Critical Care Intensivist at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa (CSR) Westover Hills Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and serves as a Member of the South Texas Regional Advisory Council Pandemic Medical Operations Workgroup. He is Board Certified in Critical Care, Pulmonary Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Sleep Medicine. He presently serves as President of Medical Staff at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospitals, President of CSR Family Health Center, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Family Health Center. Additionally, Chris is the Director of Inpatient Services for the program and Chairman of its Clinical Competency Committee and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Department of Family and Community Medicine. He entered his present position after more than 26 years of service in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, retiring in July 2011 with the rank of Colonel.

Juli Henderson is a highly trained vocalist, respected voice teacher and owner of JH Voice Studio, physician’s wife, mother of five adult children, and newly minted grandmother. She grew up moving frequently as a military dependent but has called San Antonio, Texas home for 36 years. The In Our Arms Blog is her passion project, launching in February 2021 to share the story of Robert. As the mother of a child with disabilities who passed at the tender age of eighteen, Juli’s writings give hope to hundreds of readers, including a private Facebook group where members share resources and support. She is extending her impact by her involvement in resource projects such as her recent launch of the In Our Arms “Breathe” candle in collaboration with a purpose-driven brand, School Scents. When not writing or teaching, Juli volunteers in the community on nonprofit boards and speaks in churches and schools about her “Life unexpected".

Connecting families affected by disability to recommended businesses

Empowered Together - Connecting families affected by disability to recommended businesses. They envision a world where tools and accommodations are in place for all people to meaningfully access and participate in their communities. While parenting her daughter with a developmental disability, Sarah Spear learned firsthand how isolating that journey can be and that other parents on similar journeys were feeling all alone. She recognized the value of sharing support and knowledge with one another and Empowered Together was born.

Meet. Support. Advance. Raising awareness of another Rare Disease - TBRS Community

Meet. Support. Advance. Raising awareness of another Rare Disease - TBRS Community

Tatton Brown Rahman Syndrome (TBRS) is a rare genetic disease caused by pathogenic variants (previously called mutations) in the DNMT3A gene and for that reason, it is also called DNMT3A Overgrowth Syndrome.

Individuals with TBRS have overgrowth—typically, tall stature, increased weight, and large head circumference (also known as macrocephaly)—mild to severe intellectual disability, and subtle but distinctive facial characteristics.

There are a variety of other symptoms that are also associated with TBRS, such as low muscle tone, behavioral and mental health issues, orthopedic problems, cardiac defects, and autism, but not all individuals have every clinical finding reported, and the syndrome varies considerably in its severity.

As of 2021, roughly 250 people have been diagnosed with TBRS. It is not clear how common the syndrome is, but many more individuals are likely to be diagnosed as whole genome sequencing methods become more accessible. There is currently no cure for TBRS, and clinical care is focused on managing the particular clinical findings in each individual.

Developmental Disabilities and Sexuality. Elevatus helps you have these essential conversations.

Developmental Disabilities and Sexuality. Elevatus helps you have these essential conversations.

Developmental Disabilities and Sexuality. Elevatus helps you have these essential conversations. As national leaders in the field of sexuality and intellectual, developmental disabilities, and autism they offer evidence and trauma-informed curriculum, online training, in-services, and workshops to help professionals, educators, self-advocates, and parents skillfully and confidently navigate the topic of sexuality.

When it comes to talking about sexuality, people with disabilities are often excluded; almost as if they’re incapable of having sexual thoughts, feelings, and needs. In reality, they too are sexual beings who need the information and skills for making healthy decisions about sexuality. Though agencies who work with people with developmental disabilities know that sexuality issues need to be addressed, they often don’t feel comfortable or competent enough to do so. This training will give you the curriculum, tools, and skills you need to teach sex education classes and lead staff/parent training. Katherine McLaughlin has 25 years of experience as an educator and trainer with a specialty in sexuality and developmental disability. She's also a member of the disability community and understands both personally and professionally the issues people with disabilities face. She named the company to represent her mission – to elevate us all – especially people with disabilities.

Raising Kellan - Empowering, connecting, and educating parents raising children with a disability. For Parents. By Parents.

Raising Kellan - Empowering, connecting, and educating parents raising children with a disability. For Parents. By Parents.

Raising Kellan Started in 2019. Most non-profits about children with a disability begin with a heart-rending story and the endless search on how to fix the disability.

The start of Raising Kellan wasn’t about that. You see, in June 2019, while visiting family in South Africa, Marsh Naidoo was asked to give a speech to health professionals at the Open Air School in Durban, and the feedback she received was unexpected. Sure, people were engaged. But, could she share her perspective as a physical therapist and mother of a child with cerebral palsy with other parents raising children with complex medical needs, as well?

Marsh was reluctant at the thought of sharing her experience, but she did.

She returned home and this burning thought became the blog and podcast that formed the bedrock of the non-profit organization, Raising Kellan. Since 2020, Raising Kellan has supported parents in the US, South Africa, and Europe on their journey, negotiating the uncharted territory of raising children with a disability.

Are you a parent bewildered by your child’s disability?

We are a community connected by a diagnosis, yet positively embracing our lives, and we want you to know, you’re not alone.

Raising Kellan was created by parents like you for parents like you.

The Internet should be Accessible to Everyone!

The Internet should be Accessible to Everyone!

After over 11,000 Lawsuits, the Trend is Going Parabolic. There was a time when it was possible to get away with having a website that didn’t work for people with disabilities. But those days are long gone, and ADA regulations for web accessibility are being enforced in court. Comply with ADA law and conform with WCAG 2.1 guidelines at every step of your web accessibility journey. Protect your website from accessibility-related lawsuits with the world's strongest automated solution for accessibility. Accessibility sets your website apart and showcases your commitment to inclusion - all while boosting SEO, search rankings, conversions, and your bottom line. Lionel Wolberger has spent his career understanding the nuanced role that technology plays in global advancement. As UserWay’s COO, he connects their suite of AI-powered accessibility solutions with enterprises, governments, and agencies. Lionel is also a member of the W3C standards body where he advocates for the disability community. Learn More:

Jennifer Fraser is the author of "The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health". She has a PhD in Comparative Literature and The Bullied Brain is her fourth book. She draws on medical, neuroscientific, and neurobiological research to examine what happens to brains that are bullied and abused. Neither Jennifer nor I are mental health professionals. If you feel you need help please seek out a licensed professional in your area. We are creating these episodes to show you what is possible. There was a time when I felt broken. That I didn't fit in anywhere. I'm not going to lie and say everything is rainbows and unicorns, but my good days far outnumber my bad. It's taken a LOT of work, both on my own and with therapists. Everyone's journey is going to be different. The only constant is if you want something to change you need to take action.

Becoming rentABLE - the Accessible Short-Term Rental Experts

Becoming rentABLE - the Accessible Short-Term Rental Experts

After 20 years of frustration, with very limited vacation options, Lorraine Woodward's family of four, three of whom have mobility issues due to muscular dystrophy, took it upon themselves to create their own accessible property. In 2014, Lorraine’s "A Place of No Worries" was realized. Their fully accessible property was not only a way to meet their own family vacation needs, but also a way to serve as an investment property that could be a resource for other families who needed the same accessibility features/needs. Becoming rentABLE was founded in 2021, after years of struggling to find accessible short-term rental properties. To have an accessible property means that there are no barriers to entry for anyone; an elderly relative, a family member with a physical disability, or a friend who has been temporarily disabled. Each would have access to something that everyone should have access to a place where memories can be made and a chance to live their best life.

They understand there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to accessibility. Disabilities come in all shapes and sizes. While wheelchair accessibility is talked about the most, they have expanded our efforts to include mobility, cognitive, hearing, vision, and aging accessibility. They offer 36 filters, so you can customize your own needs and find the best property for you and your family.

Trailer: Bullied Brain: Healing from, and overcoming, Trauma

Trailer: Bullied Brain: Healing from, and overcoming, Trauma

This is the first episode of a joint venture between Jennifer Fraser and myself.

Jennifer Fraser is the author of The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. She has a PhD in Comparative Literature and The Bullied Brain is her fourth book. She draws on medical, neuroscientific, and neurobiological research to examine what happens to brains that are bullied and abused. Jennifer's an award-winning educator and works as a coach, consultant, and international presenter.

The podcast is a dialogue that works in the first season like a coaching session. Eric shares his childhood experiences of being abused and Jennifer discusses the implications for my brain and for recovery. Our goal is to use Eric's childhood abuse as a case study as most people don't learn about their brains or about how abuse impacts their brains. The research is clear that the brain is innately wired to repair and recover when we know the harm was done and the evidence-based practices to heal. This is the focus of Jennifer's book, but it comes to life in the podcast as Eric bravely walks us through the abuse done to him and his many strategies for healing his neurological scars.
