ABCs of Disability Planning

ABCs of Disability Planning

By Eric Jorgensen

Frequently families like mine don't know what's available to help us, we're too focused on getting through our day-to-day. But even if we had time, we would need to know what to look for. There had to be a better way, so I started this podcast. It's my mission to introduce a new organization or individual that is serving those with disabilities every week.

Does a certain guest resonate with you? Reach out to them. Or, if you'd prefer, I'd be happy to make an introduction.

How do you protect yourself, or your children, from abuse - w/ Amy Saltzman
How do you protect yourself, or your children, from abuse - w/ Amy Saltzman
There is an epidemic of abuse in society. Reports of abuse surface on an almost weekly basis across organizations and industries. Gymnasts abused by Larry Nassar, and in the Olympic programs of at least 6 other countries, female soccer players abused by multiple youths and NWSL coaches, high school rowers abused in Maryland, bobsledders, rugby players and rowers abused in Canada, football players abused by the team doctor at the University of Michigan, US snowboarders, NHL hockey players…And those are just the stories that have made the news. Research indicates children are most vulnerable to sexual abuse between the ages of seven and thirteen. The median age for reported abuse is nine years old. However, more than 20% of children are sexually abused before age eight. And the numbers are even higher for women with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. These statistics likely underreport the frequency of sexual abuse and do not consider covert emotional abuse (grooming) and overt emotional and physical abuse. We can prevent much of this abuse, and the devastating consequences, by teaching children to recognize all forms of abuse, and empowering them to speak up. Amy Saltzman started Spot A Spider to empower people of all ages to see and stop abuse in any setting (residential facilities/group homes, sports, schools, religious organizations, community activities, etc). Are you empowering AAC users, or censoring, and maybe even accidentally hurting, them?
Are you empowering AAC users, or censoring, and maybe even accidentally hurting, them?
Are you empowering AAC users, or censoring, and maybe even accidentally hurting, them? AAC users have little to no control over what words they have to communicate. They rely on whoever programs their device. This could lead to well-meaning individuals inadvertently censoring an AAC user. Worse, it leaves AAC users unable to say anything about the abuse they may be suffering. Ms. Hali Strickler is an AAC Services Coordinator for TechOWL at the Institute for our Whole Lives. She provides AAC, assistive technology support, and services to individuals with complex communication needs. Hali received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science from Temple University. She is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist with experience in the public school setting. See the Sunshine in Every Child - Sunshine Foundation
Sunshine Foundation’s sole purpose is to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged, and abused children ages three to eighteen, whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to the financial strain that the child’s illness may cause. Sunshine Foundation’s special dreams can be anything from a celebrity meet and greet, a family trip, a shopping spree, or adaptive medical or therapeutic equipment!  Our dreamers have requested and received items such as above-ground swimming pools, outdoor play equipment, sensory rooms, and many other amazing dream items. When asked the question, “If you could have one dream, what would it be?” the most common response from the children we serve is to visit the Central Florida theme parks. Our magical dreams may include visits to Legoland, Disney, SeaWorld, Universal, and more. Children get to meet their favorite characters, enjoy the rides, and take in all the amazing sights. Sunshine Foundation has its own Dream Village in Davenport, FL, where families may stay while on a dream trip to Central Florida! The Dream Village features nine fairy tale-themed cottages plus accessible amenities, including a heated zero-entry swimming pool, a mini-golf course, and a playground! Help individuals with cognitive disabilities to achieve independence across all of life’s domains - Avail by CentralReach
Founded & launched in 2017 by Lisa Marie Clinton, avail® was developed from a desire to both raise public expectations and empower individuals to achieve their goals. Lisa questioned how to revolutionize how individuals were supported, and equip them with the tools to self-manage their day and have ownership. The advances in technology can now support such an approach. In addition, they wanted to support organizations to be in line with best practice guidelines, and implement evidence-based programs which report and achieve data-driven outcomes. This has been achieved, and today the solution is funded globally by many local authorities and governments as a leading solution and has proven to have a life-changing impact on users. In 2021, Avail Support was acquired by CentralReach, a leader in Autism and IDD software and services. Lisa Marie now serves as Managing Director of Avail Support and continues her mission to bring innovation, opportunities, and independence to those who may need additional support. RODS Heroes - Helping orphaned children with Down Syndrome come home to loving families
RODS Heroes - Helping orphaned children with Down Syndrome come home to loving families
Around the world, children with Down syndrome are routinely abandoned and institutionalized for life. This widespread problem seems overwhelming, but there is hope. RODS Heroes wholeheartedly believe that when you become actively engaged in good work, whether that be adopting a child or helping create opportunities for others to adopt, you will witness miracles. People will help you, partnerships will be forged, and all of the necessary components of your plan will fall into place. But you have to be willing to take a leap of faith. RODS Heroes is a nonprofit committed to finding a loving home for all orphaned children with Down syndrome. Through the efforts of our many RODS Heroes and the amazing families who are answering the call to adopt, miracles are transpiring right before our eyes. Brady and Andrea Murray are the founders of RODS Heroes, and Brady serves as its President. Their journey with the Down syndrome community began in 2007 when their son was born with Down syndrome. The Murrays quickly realized that what they thought would be one of their family's greatest challenges would actually be one of their greatest blessings. Special Abilities Network - Empowering Children with Special Needs Through Smart Planning
Special Abilities Network - Empowering Children with Special Needs Through Smart Planning
The Special Abilities Network (SAN) is a team of financial planners who are members of the special needs community professionally and/or personally. They’ve made it their life’s work to empower families in the special needs community because they understand what it means to wake up in the middle of the night with fears of the future.  The founders of SAN prefer the term “special abilities” rather than “special needs.” This is because their own experience with their own children has been that, although they do need more help than typically developing individuals would, their children do have many special abilities. They have unique ways of connecting with others and shining a bright light on the world. Brady Murray is the proud father of 7 children, 2 with Down syndrome: one born into his family, Nash, and the other adopted from China, Cooper. The Murray family loves all things special needs and strongly believes in second chances. This belief fuels their love for foster care, and the two youngest children in the family were adopted through foster care. Some people only have affected bones, in which case it might be called FD. When bones and other tissues are affected, it is called MAS. Since both FD and MAS are caused by the exact same gene mutation, and since many people with FD also have other tissues involved, the FD/MAS Alliance and doctors have decided to call it FD/MAS. It is a rare condition caused by a mutation in the gene GNAS. The mutated gene produces a protein, Gs alpha, that is dysfunctional. Gs alpha is a sort of “on/off” switch in cells, and the mutated protein is stuck in the “on” position. Depending on the cell or tissue affected, the “on” switch has a different effect. Adrienne McBride serves as Executive Director and has 15+ years of working in the nonprofit sector in leadership roles. Her professional experience with the autistic adult community, non-traditional students pursuing higher education, and the chronically homeless have made her a tireless advocate for underserved populations. She is thrilled to work alongside the patients and caregivers of the FD/MAS community to find better answers and better options for all those who suffer from this rare disease. Adrienne received her undergraduate degree in French and Politics from Fairfield University, CT, and her master's degree in business from the University of Maryland. Anne Corvelle is a parent of a daughter with MAS/PFD. Ann spent over 10 years working in non-profit organizations in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, currently in fundraising. Besides spending time with her family and working, she is heavily involved in her children’s school and doing whatever work the FD/MAS Alliance asks of her. Ever since her daughter was diagnosed in 2016, she has been on a mission to bring attention to FD/MAS in the hopes of there one day being a treatment or cure for everyone affected by these diseases. Nolu - a new kind of dating app, because emotional inclusion matters
Nolu is a new kind of dating app specifically designed for people living with disabilities providing a fun, safe, and inclusive community for dating. It's a cultural movement, an equal opportunity for romance, love, and companionship. Nolu is open to all and welcomes everyone looking for emotional inclusion! It was designed to cater primarily, but not exclusively, to the needs of people with disabilities, as opposed to traditional applications that leave very little room for inclusion and diversity. Their dating community is fully inclusive and encourages authenticity and transparency. Nolu's mission is to help as many people as possible to have a real option for dating and access to an emotional and love life. It should be noted that many of the accessibility features must first be selected in the settings of the cell phone you are using.  For example, by selecting a larger font size, these same settings will carry over into the application. Nolu includes many features that support people with hearing loss such as the Virtual Interview Module that allows users to record video profiles so that everyone can be read, seen, and heard. zPods - the Future of Sleep for Sleepless Children
zPods - the Future of Sleep for Sleepless Children
zPods - "Dream, Play, Sleep" zPods is the first U.S.-based company to provide kids with a customizable, sensory-friendly sleeping pod. These regenerative spaces come jam-packed with intelligent lighting control, white noise generation, Bluetooth speakers, and more. zPods believes children can find better sleep with these tools, helping parents sleep better. The American Academy of Family Physicians is saying that up to 50% of children will experience some sort of sleep challenge. If this statistic is true it's likely parents are going to have issues sleeping. Especially, if their children are having difficulty. Not to mention if the children can sleep better, their parents can find more alone time to laugh, relax, and not be as overwhelmed. A zPods bed begins by being a naturally calming space. The enclosure has been proven to help people process overstimulation and calm. Controlling light levels and sound also calms and de-stresses. The airflow keeps the temperature cool and comfortable so that children can fall asleep and stay asleep. In a zPods bed, all senses can be optimized for calming, processing stimulation, and deep restorative sleep. zPods beds are compatible with most other sleep aids on the market, from under-mattress and wearable sensors that gauge your sleep performance to weighted blankets to antibacterial cooling sheets or bed warmers and coolers. As science and technology continue to leap forward zPods will integrate the advances to continue to offer better solutions. Traveling Different: Vacation Strategies for Parents of the Anxious, the Inflexible, and the Neurodiverse
"Traveling Different: Vacation Strategies for Parents of the Anxious, the Inflexible, and the Neurodiverse" Dawn M. Barclay is an award-winning author who has spent a career working in different aspects of the travel industry. She started as an agent with her parents’ firms, Barclay Travel Ltd and Barclay International Group Short-Term Apartment Rentals, and then branched out into travel trade reporting with senior or contributing editor positions at Travel Agent Magazine, Travel Life, Travel Market Report, and most recently, Insider Travel Report. She is a mother of two and resides in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley. She also writes fiction as D.M. Barr and holds leadership roles in several writer organizations. Dawn’s other fiction books can be found at http://www.dmbarr.com. Excerpt from Dawn's 8/22/2022 column in InsiderTravelReport.com Thanks to a growing focus on inclusive travel, families with children with invisible disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder and mood/attention disorders are starting to travel more. That’s the findings of a new study by The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which recently updated its study of 1,000 special needs families from four years ago. The new study shows that 78 percent of special needs families surveyed are hesitant to travel. While that’s still a significant percentage, it represents a 9 percent improvement from 2018. Of those, 94 percent said they would take more vacations or visit more unfamiliar destinations if they had access to autism-trained and certified options. That’s a 1 percent increase over the last study. Dawn has made many appearances on other podcasts, here's a link if you would like to listen. Supportiv - 24/7 live peer support chats (always anonymous, moderated & troll-free)
We all stress about work, relationships, health, and other daily life struggles, but we don't always have someone to talk to or someone who understands and is willing to listen. That's what led to the creation of Supportiv. Supportiv is a live chat 24/7 where you get matched with others facing similar struggles in a small group, making it easier than ever to talk to people who can relate to exactly what you're going through. It's completely anonymous, so you can feel comfortable opening up about what's really weighing you down. We all get upset, frustrated, lonely... You don't have to feel alone in the crowd. Each small group has a trained moderator who ensures a safe, positive, troll-free, and judgment-free environment. You’ll also receive helpful tips, how-to's, recommendations, and resources, all in real-time. Relevant articles, videos, podcasts, and mindfulness content will appear, without having to spend time hunting for them. Want to learn more? Beaming Health - helping families navigate the Autism Provider maze
The company's Founders, Chris Olmanson and Marissa "Missy" Pittard, have personally and professionally witnessed the challenges families face when trying to find providers and services. Their Mission is simple, but not easy. "Create a world in which every parent can sleep well at night knowing they’re doing all they can to set their child up for a happy and healthy life." Beaming Health wants to be the leading autism resource for parents. Their goal is to be a one-stop shop for autism resources that parents can trust. Their directory is filled with listings of local autism support services in your area found by their team. They've created a Beaming Score to help parents "grade" providers listed on the website. As Chris admits during our conversation, it's not perfect, but in my opinion, it's a strong start!
