Ending Portugal’s NHR tax incentive & getting the Digital Nomad Visa
A few weeks ago the Portuguese government suddenly announced the intention to end their Non-Habitual Residents (NHR) program - a tax incentive that has lured countless foreigners to Portugal since its inception 15 years ago. This proposal suggests the program will no longer be available to anyone after December 31, 2023, and some headlines seem to suggest that Portugal is no longer in the business of wanting to attract expats and digital nomads. But as I discussed with Diana Andrade, Head of Portugal Immigration at Lexidy Law, this is definitely not the case and there are still many questions yet to be answered. Today Diana and I dive into the changes coming with NHR and a potential new tax incentive coming to replace it. We also dive into the Portuguese Digital Nomad visa and the D7 visa, as well as all the other reasons beyond a tax incentive.

Converting traditional roles to remote + month-to-month nomading and Peru
Grayson Harris has been traveling the world for the last few years, staying for a month at a time in various countries, and crossing off bucket list items ranging from celebrating Argentina’s world cup victory in Buenos Aires to surfing in Sri Lanka, and even introducing his dad to nomad life in Portugal. He has a long list of entertaining stories to tell, but perhaps most interesting is the fact that he managed to convert his traditional job as an electrical engineer into a location independent role that matched his lifelong dream to live on the road. Today he is living that dream and helping others at his engineering firm do the same. In this episode Grayson shares tips on how to pitch transitioning your traditional career to remote, the changes traditional companies can make to take advantage of the shift towards workplace flexibility, and his tips for aspiring digital nomads. Off the beaten path experiences in Italy w/ the Co-Founder of Kino Italy
Serena Chiro started her travel adventures as a 17 year-old, leaving Italy for the first time to become an au pair in Ireland. From there she became a perpetual expat and nomad, living in places ranging from London to Shanghai, getting a masters degree in Scandinavia, and eventually circling back home to build Kino Italy. These days she’s leading month-long off-the-beaten-path experiences for remote workers in authentic destinations throughout Italia, avoiding the overly touristy locations like Rome, Venice, and Florence, and providing the opportunity to connect with likeminded people, both fellow travelers and locals. Grumpy old nomads + trading travel for the comforts of home
Mitko Karshovski is the host of That Remote Life podcast and the editor behind the Remote Insider newsletter. He’s also a returning guest here, this time stopping by to touch on his recent experience living in Mexico, and the reasons he ultimately decided to pull the plug on his life abroad (for now at least) after 7 years on the road. This leads us into a deeper discussion about some of the downsides of the traveling lifestyle, which are often overlooked in the glamorized version of expat/nomad life, and spans a variety of topics, from building community, misplacing identity, and missing the comforts of home, to portfolio careers, 75 Hard, and the dizziness of choice, Chase’s future plans, and many others. How to move to Greece w/ the Greek Digital Nomad Visa
Eleftheria Charalambous is the Head of Greek Immigration at Lexidy Law in Athens, Greece. Originally from Cyprus, she made her way to Greece years ago, and today she specializes in helping digital nomads and aspiring expats take advantage of the opportunity to come and live in this incredible country. Today we dive into our mutual love for Greece - the food, people, landscapes, history, culture, etc - but most importantly, perhaps the best digital nomad visa in the world. As we come to learn, many remote workers could easily obtain the Greek DN visa via a predominantly virtual process, stay in the Schengen and Greece for multiple two-year stints, eventually obtain permanent residency, all without having to pay Greek taxes. We dive into all of this and much more in this episode of About Abroad!
Note that this episode is for entertainment purposes only. Everyone’s immigration situation is unique and in order to properly evaluate your options, you should speak with a legal representative who specializes in this line of work. European vanlife & remote work on the road w/ the Founder of The Van Code
Navigating a move to The Netherlands
The Netherlands “just works”, and for that reason it is (perhaps surprisingly) one of the most popular countries in the world to move to. From exciting cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, to the great infrastructure and social safety net, to the massive international community where nearly everyone speaks English - there are a lot of reasons to consider spending significant time here. But navigating the system can be challenging, and there are, of course, cultural and bureaucratic aspects of a transition to Holland that only someone who has actually done it, can attest to. So in this episode we sit down with Jelena Mikic, a Serbian expat who made that move and now helps other foreigners follow in her footsteps as the Co-founder of Move To NL.

Mapping a family move abroad + reflections on, Greece, community & travel
Nick Hahn has been leading remote teams for two decades at companies like IBM, Invision, and Meta - but like many people, now that he has location independence, he’s starting to map out a long term move abroad with his partner and their three children. Today Nick and Chase sit down to reflect on their recent experience traveling together in Greece, as well as Nick’s family’s recent “summer test run” of a life abroad, and all the push/pull factors, concerns, and plans, associated with moving their family to a foreign country. Finally, we also dive into the concept of citizenship by descent via Italy and Hungary, which can provide many non-Europeans with a path to long term residency in Europe.

Trading NYC for coastal France w/ Charles
Charles Kergaravat traded his thriving financial career in Manhattan for a more balanced life abroad in a region of France often not visited by the masses, but lacking little in terms of natural beauty, culture, and lifestyle. Today he joins About Abroad to share his perspective on making that leap, the pros/cons of life in the US vs France, and fully immersing in a foreign country. We also chat about Brittany, an incredible coastal area in northwest France that has become his home away from home, and how the local language and celtic influences have become a core part of what he loves about his new life. Global Citizenship + traveling in N. Korea & Afghanistan + the new Canadian Digital Visa
Dan Brotman obtained four citizenships by the age of 36, but that’s far from the most interesting aspect of his journey. Dan’s travels have taken him through countries such as North Korea and Afghanistan, allowed him to vote in foreign countries ranging from South Africa to the US, serve in a foreign military, and later fly helicopters with his previous sworn enemy. A fascinating discussion that takes us around the globe and eventually lands in Canada, where we chat about the new Canadian digital nomad visa and the launch of Rootless Mobility.
