Accidentally Fasting is a weekly, hour long show about the good, the bad, and the funny of American culture. Hosts Katie and Alex travel, chat with friends and strangers, and discuss real-life stuff that matters in the Southwest. Why are we ignoring the symptoms of climate change? Which bartender was it that roofied the whole lot of us? Is that packet of Kool-Aid from 1983 spoiled? Find out the answers to these questions and more while fasting with AF.
Have you ever felt like a fly on the wall during some weird casual episode of a podcast? This is your episode of AF! Our first guest ever, Lance Stephenson/Wraith Haven returns via our newly set up phone lines to talk about his brand spankin' new album that dropped Monday. We even include a song from it at the end of the episode! This one is super action-packed, with voicemail messages from listeners and friends at the beginning, too.
It's almost time for Autumn. You know what that means? AF hosts Katie and Alex talk about the history of phone phreaking! What? Oh, they set up a new phone system that you can call to leave a vm on (It's a vintage Radio Shack 43-3825 Answering Machine!). We'll even play it on the show! They also recap the last episode, a first Instagram livestream thing for AF, and hit on their favorite things about Fall. This one is packed full of randomness.
Hey Fasters, we're broadcasting this week's episode live on Instagram from Santa Fe's Zozobra Festival! We use this brief little episode to announce that, as well as our own custom phone number that you can call to leave us a voice mail message that we'll play on the air. Call it while you watch us at Zozobra to tell us what you think! Leave us a message just saying you love us and that you need a meatball sandwich! Whatever you want, number inside this one. Have a great holiday weekend and we'll see you on the Le Gram!
Don't you wanna go where nobody knows your name? You can still be glad you came. Wrong song! We're mad about Madrid, baby! Seems like the bartenders there would be quick to learn your name, too, so let's forget all that hubbub about that. They're sharp suckers out there in them hills. Not only can you hear a little bit about what Madrid, NM is all about, but Katie and Alex talk about the Turquoise Trail leading up there from 40, Cedar Crest, a little town along the way, and the totally unrelated Bosque Chile festival. What a busy episode! Check it out while we prep for Zozobra next weekend.
Fasters, there's a lot going on this month and we'd just really like to say it's nice to be alive. To express this, Katie and Alex talk about death, near death experiences, and depression, woo-hoo! There's also some great new junk in our store at accidentallyfasting.com, and a bit more Twin Peaks talk as your friendly neighborhood buffet regulars rewatch the Return.
What do Nuclear war, Ben and Jerry's, and Pompeii have in common? They're all part of this episode, silly! Pull up a chair and relax, or head to the frozen goods aisle of your nearest grocery store, then relax to the sound that spoon you have digging your way out of a toxic waste prison at the center of the Pacific. Still not making sense? Just give this one a listen...
Have you ever felt like an outcast and submitted your story to a podcast only to find out that story never happened to you and you don't actually exist? Katie and Alex haven't had that experience themselves, but they know a few people who have. Also, they get into a little nitty gritty on bullying, privilege, and social change. Not that they're experts, but they do know a few people who have good stories about prejudice and stuff that's happened to them that turned out to not exist at all. Something like that.
What sounds like summer in the good ol' U.S. of A. than a BBQ? Whether you call it a cook-out or an excuse to get aunt Susie drunk with Bob the new neighbor, they're as fun as a bun in the sun! Stand back, too, because the hosts of this podcast know a little about rubbing, smoking, and saucing meats. There'll be pools, grills, beer, and lot's of great conversation this summer, for sure. Also, use the warm weather to celebrate us having our 30th episode out! Dang ol!
There's no place in the world quite like the last frontier, Alaska. Katie and Alex went to Juneau to explore the bars, fish taco trucks, and the bars. Trust us when we say drinks were cheap and kept comin! There's a bit of a sadness to this episode, though, as a lot of America's largest state is suffering from wildfires, record-breaking warm climate, and massive influx of cruise ship tourists. Don't worry too much, we think our biggest, toughest state will pull through... at least, we hope. We've added some weird bells and whistles to this episode, too, so don't be alarmed when strange things happen.
Katie and Alex build up the nerve to talk about one of America's greatest cities. There aren't many like her. The emerald city stands alone in many aspects. Here AF is, though, telling it like it is, in another travel episode. Stand by, ye olde folk, here's the big PNW!
Join AF co-host Katie on a journey through the utmost depths of humanity. It just so happens that the final Guided Agitation of this mini-series takes place in an airport, and inside a plane. Maybe our esteemed hosts have been traveling too much lately.
Which state has the most breweries in America? I don't know, but it is possible that New Mexico is in the top 10, and that's what matters. What also matters is that the craft brewing scene in the good ol' U S of A has been around since the 60's. If you couldn't beer me then, you can definitely beer me now! Join Katie and Alex as they go through a list of all the NM breweries, sharing some highlights form the ones we love. We also talk about Budweiser. It had to be done...
Follow The Irregular Truth's co-host Alicia on another meditative journey through the human experience. Wake up and gather your kiddos. It's time for a trip to the zoo! Will they get eaten? Will an elephant trample all over the entire fifth grade class? There's only one way to find out. Strap on your fanny pack, don your AF T-shirt, and herd the lambs off to the feed farm. Are you sure we had to involve kids in this...
Can't we just have a daytime show? Can't we just talk about the Kardashians for once? Isn't that what we all want? I don't know now, because it's my birthday and I've got mixed feelings about everything that's happened this year. All I want is to eat a nice burger, bottomless fries, a piece of chocolate cake, and to cry myself to sleep over a bowl of popcorn while a show about 600 lb people plays in my dreams. Will the light from the television wake me up? Who's next? You Decide! On epic rap birthdays of history!
Follow The Irregular Truth's co-host Phil on another meditative journey through the human experience. You wake up ready to go to work, but everything is an obstacle this morning. It's turned into the worst start to a day that you've ever had. This has to be the morning from Hell. How can it keep going? We may never know, but it sure as gravy does. Stand back, this one gets messy.
What do you get when you mix Catholicism, beans and rice? Santa Fe, New Mexico! Rock out to the dude playing the Titanic theme on a wood flute thing in the square at the center of town and you've got the quintessential experience in America's oldest, yet boldest capitol. That's not true, but we doubt anyone who lives there is reading this. Put on your thinking caps, buckle up, hunker down, pucker up, and get ready to take a verbal vacation through the streets of the town with red chile ristras on every corner and love in every heart. This is one dense episode.
Follow AF co-host Alex on another meditative journey through the human experience. You just got off work and want to chuck a couple dollops of burger into your pie hole, but first you've got to hit the drive thru. Turns out the wait is on! While you sit in the comfort of your wonderfully air-conditioned car, your partner is starving, the fellas behind you in line are impatient, and a poor little convertible gets plowed over by a big ol' pick up. Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
AF hosts spent the weekend exploring central New Mexico, reigniting their passion for camping and giant science strictures. Katie and Alex discuss the hardships of camping, pro tips, and some of the unique sites the American Southwest has to offer. From the basics of toilet paper and a toothbrush to driving out to the NRAO's Very Large Array, if you enjoy being outside for even five minutes, you'll love this episode. Heck, if you've never been camping, this one is especially for you. Don't miss out! (And remember: Only you can prevent forest fires.)
Follow Senorita Ruth on another meditative journey through the human experience. Why does your phone keep going off? The ding dong of an alert sound... The vibration... Your post was witty, but seriously? Wait a minute, who let that asshole comment? Oh no, it's public. Your quaint little second of self expression is turning into a flaming thunderdome of madness! Take another sip of vodka. Hurry, down the glass! What did that dude just say?! Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
It may be spiders, snakes, bad teeth, things with holes in them, or annoying sounds, but everyone's got something that freaks them out. Returning guests Ruth and Myles dig deep down into their souls with Alex and Katie in this tell-all episode, where phobias are the topic du jour. What's worse than waking up realizing you ran out of coffee ground and developing a splitting caffeine headache, you ask? I don't know, maybe a mass gathering celebrities without teeth, or a room full of typists where the sound of keys gnashing gets increasingly louder. Bust out your agoraphobia and settle into a nice warm blanket. Here comes the fear.
Follow musician extraordinaire Lance on a meditative journey through the human experience. You wake up in a field somewhere, still drunk from the party you were at earlier. You're hungry, and the box of fries sprawled across the ground next to you is not going to quell that. There's only so much you can eat in some random field, so you make your way home to a refrigerator you probably never wanted to open in the first place. Enjoy your meal! Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
Katie and Alex both have birthdays coming up! What better way to pre-game than to discuss the trials and tribulations of aging into their thirties. Like a fine wine, or a musky, dry-aged steak, these two have grown a lot since the party days of college. They've also begun suffering from worse hangovers and seeing the early signs of approaching the half way mark. Help them get to where they need to be emotionally by letting them help you by telling you the things they think make up wisdom of the sages. Whew, who knew getting older involved so many mouthfuls?
Follow AF co-host Alex Langston on a meditative journey through the human experience. You wake up chained to the ceiling in a dark shack that's not really scary at first, but the more you look around, the more nervous you become. What's worse than the dilapidated wood the shack's built out of is the dead body laying on the floor below you. Why would he be wearing the mask? Did your would-be murderer just die of a heart attack while trying to kill you? Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
Join Number 5 and Stephanie...errr.... Katie and Alex as they discuss the worst places to be when saved by the Avengers. Things get a little weird as they go, so hang on tight! There are plenty of Endgame spoilers in this episode. We thought it would best to warn you, even though you've most likely seen the film at this point. Trust us when we say even the Hulk wouldn't be secretly angry when we transition from the weirdness behind the MCU's biggest blockbuster to the life expectancy of space itself.
Follow Trash Fish co-host Myles on a meditative journey through the human experience. You've just finished a glorious meal of baked beans next to the campfire and are ready to curl up in a zero-degree sleeping bag for a heart warming podcast episode. What's that rustling in the woods? It's not aliens, but it could be another mythological creature we all know and love: Bigfoot! Speaking of love, I think he's hinting that he wants a little more attention than he usually gets. Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
How's the internet different for women than for men? What about every day, real life? Katie walks us internet users with the attached penae appendages through her history using the internet, and the weird stuff dudes have done throughout it. Also in this episode, Facebook As A Graveyard and Podcasts As a Social Network. We cover a lot, but it's all important stuff to remember. Shits different for the female half of the population, you dig?
Follow AF co-host Katie on another meditative journey through the human experience. You're using the bathroom and run out of toilet paper, oh no! Better make your way to the local, members only, big box warehouse slash food court store to pick up more than you'll ever need. A grumpy public awaits your arrival. Don't keep them waiting! Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
Are we there, yet? No. Even when the music plays, we're not done. This is the 90's episode. We go back in time, and when our time machine breaks, it really breaks. Our guests Myles and Tim don't mind being stuck back in time with us, though. They're good sports who love playing the YouTube game, but they loved N64 more. Who doesn't miss Perfect Dark and Turok? God speed, traveler. Oh, and hold on tight for the blooper reel!
Follow artist Jason Lamar Butcher on a meditative journey through the human experience. You're driving down an unknown highway and feel a bubbling in your tubbling. Time to pull up to that gas station and take care of business. There's only one problem: the bathroom ain't empty and the smell ain't pretty. You may not be on the road any more, but you better buckle up! Find out more in this episode of our special ten part "Guided Agitation" mini series.
Your lovable AF hosts Katie and Alex read and react to futuristic sounding STEM headlines, prompting the discussion of techno-fascist societies and the one and only SPACE FORCE (kinda?). Can drones convert from flying to driving? Would they recognize your face as you pass through the airport? Was Philip K. Dick the closest to predicting the future that we're about a week from being in, and is that good or bad? Was Minority Report a better film adaptation than We Can Remember It For You Wholesale? Some things we may never know.
What? It's 420? That's Halloweed, sucka! It's also the halfway point to Halloween. Mind blown! Join Katie and Alex as they discuss scary dreams, movies, and the problems with true crime podcasts/videos (as well as... Alex's bedtime routine?). They're pouring salt on open wounds here. Get the blood while it's hot!
Aliens... You've seen um. We've seen um. Whataya gonna do 'bout it? Listen to this episode especial, of course! Katie and Alex discuss New Mexico's rich history as a safe haven for galactic travelers. Roswell is just the beginning, fasters. They cover Dulce, Socorro, Corona, and the list keeps going! Who knew we Americans had such an active Interplanetary Visitor's Center in our own back yard?
Ever wonder what YouTube sensation Hot Ones would be like without Sean Evans, chicken wings, or those fancy napkins? Move over Chili Klaus and ponder no longer. Katie and Alex rake their friends, brother/sister spice lord team Phillip and Alicia over the coals in a seemingly never-ending gauntlet of hot sauce drenched tortilla chips. Welcome to Fast Ones. (WARNING: Chips are eaten throughout this episode.)
Katie and Alex joined a softball team! Join them and special guest/teammate Ruth in discussing America's real pass-time, social media history, and the secret word of the day: vodka. Ahhhhh ehuh ehuh! There's nothing wrong with having a frosty bevy in the dug out while waiting to bat, is there? Not in the Accidentally Fasting book of rules and regulations. Did someone just hit a home run, or was that our catcher's head hitting the dirt after one too many softball-ritas?
Have you ever wondered what sets medical cannabis apart from what's in your roommate's little plastic Paw Patrol baggy? Lamar knows! He also knows a lot about music, food, and has life pro tips for all of us young-ins (He's not old, but it is his birthday!). Katie and Alex dig deep into Lamar's artful mind for the truth. Smoke um if you got um!
Join us on one more travel episode, where Katie and Alex cruise the streets of Sin City itself, Las Vegas, Nevada. Not only did they hit almost every casino on the strip, but they saddled up in a party bus and took a day trip out to the beautiful, one-of-a-kind Valley of Fire. Pile up a couple plates of nachos and fill the bathtub with margaritas, cause there's no other way to enjoy Vegas!
Love Mardi Gras? Never even heard of New Orleans? Either way, you'll love Katie and Alex's tales of debauchery and beads from their trip to Mardi Gras 2019. They land at Louis Armstrong airport, hop in a cab to their hotel, and the party doesn't stop til they end up on some random street way outside the quarter, lost in the pouring rain. Strap on your mask and get out your purple, yellow, and green shirts as AF's hosts head across Canal to Bourbon!
Diane, we're about to talk about the best show that's ever been on television. Pete, Harry, Josie, Dr. Jacoby, Coop. Everybody has something to hide, and it's been going on for over 25 years. Eat a good breakfast and take a sip of that deep, black coffee. Katie and Alex are taking us on a quick trip through the Black Lodge. Meanwhile...
Guest host Myles from the YouTube channel Rap Roll Call joins Katie and Alex in drinking zombie barf, talking media production, and trudging through awkward interview questions about who he'd rather eat spaghetti with. Myles has a new channel in the works, Trash Fish Productions, that does videos similar to what we do here with audio at Accidentally Fasting. He's another content creator who Katie and Alex are both proud to call their guest.
Katie and Alex Head to Denver, CO for this episode, exploring restaurants, bars, arcades, and reliving their honeymoon trip through Colorado. Join us for this special Valentine's week episode. Also, somehow they found oysters smack dab in the center of the Colorado Rockies. Luckily they weren't from the prairie. Eat a few of those and you get free drinks, if you can find your way to the bar.
What's your guilty pleasure, triple bacon cheese burgers? 1980's space western/operas? Join Katie and Alex as they discuss their own guilty pleasures, no holds barred. It's the final "getting to know you" episode. The culmination of the beginning of something new. Don't be shy. Whatever it is that you secretly love behind closed doors, we got your back.
Join Katie and Alex in discussing life's ins and outs with their good friend and first ever guest host, Lance, aka musical act Wraith Haven. These three have been through everything from hail storms at the camp site to being shot at on Christmas Eve. They're closer than peas in a pod, and none of that made a dent in their friendship. Lance is playing shows throughout the Midwest, in Chicago, Milwaukee, Toledo, and more.
Katie and Alex discuss the weight loss journey they embarked on over the last few years, and maintaining their goal weights. It turns out, after losing almost 100 pounds collectively, it really is all about calories in/calories out. There aren't any fancy tricks, not metabolic caveats, and it has nothing to do with gluten or your thyroid (in most cases). Granted, no one at AFHQ is a docter, but we've all lost a heck of a lot of weight.
Don't worry! Katie and Alex did their detective work for this true-ish crime episode as soon as a strange document fell into their laps. Ted Brown, the anti-government "freedom fighter" was running an illegal business out of his mailbox company. It turns out he was selling bank accounts that had been opened using the personal information of the elderly and dead. What's worse is, after Ted died, other freedom fighters in his organization kept the business going. Somebody involved wrote a tell all, and we have one of the only copies left. Find out more strange details surrounding an Albuquerque business that closed in Spring of 2018.
In the second ever AF episode, Katie and Alex finish up the second half, or I guess the first half of the alphabet of things they like, depending on how you look at it. Get up close and personal with the hosts we hope you will come to know and love more than anyone in your family, in the whole history of your family. Don't go running to 23 and me to figure out which of your ancestors you love the most, though. We all know the Nat Geo DNA service is better.
Join hosts Katie and Alex in the first episode of Accidentally Fasting as they introduce themselves in a way only someone who pulled you over could think up: Naming things they like that begin with letters of the alphabet... starting with Z. Don't worry, no police officers were harmed in the recording of this episode. We're all just glad this new journey is finally starting.
