Welcome to Season 2 of the ACN Podcast

Welcome to Season 2 of the ACN Podcast

Hello my name is Ben Jenkins and welcome back to the second season of the ACN Podcast, the official podcast of the Australian College of Nursing.

This season of the podcast I return to deliver three types of episodes:

The first is a continuation of last-seasons interviews, whereby I spoke to nurses and midwives from a variety of clinical specialties to showcase their careers and to celebrate their achievements.

The second type of episode highlights organisations, sub-communities, advancing technologies or opportunities relevant to our profession.

Finally, the third type of episodes are clinical scenarios. I will be speaking with subject matter experts from a wide-variety of clinical specialties, pose them a scenario relevant to their area of expertise and get them to run through the assessment, management and special considerations for our benefit. Throughout these episodes I encourage you to pause the audio, to have a think of how you handle the situation and then add to or refresh your knowledge through the advice and guidance of each guest.

Some of these episodes will stick exclusively to one type, whilst others will blend these types together. I am excited to return each fortnight to deliver episodes for our nursing and midwifery community. If you would like to be a guest; if you would like to know more about a particular organisation; or if you have any suggestions for content this year, please don’t hesitate to send a message to ACN via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or our various social media platforms.

My name is Ben Jenkins and welcome back to another season of The ACN Podcast.

Bradley Chesham MACN - Innovation: VR & AR Technologies

Bradley Chesham MACN - Innovation: VR & AR Technologies

Welcome back to another episode of the ACN Podcast.

As a lot of us are self-isolating at this time, it makes it quite difficult  to deliver content in the way that we’re used to. I know over the last few years as I've gone through uni a lot of the education space has tended to move more and more into online education, however with COVID19, this is even more so, as all of the education at this time is completely online.

Today's theme has all got to do with the use of technology, in particular the use of virtual reality in order to think of new ways to deliver content. On today's episode I speak with Bradley Chesham.  Bradley is a member of ACN (MACN). You may have read one of Bradley's articles in the latest edition of ‘The Hive’,  ACN’s quarterly magazine. The article is exactly what we are mentioning now with the use of augmented and virtual realities and the benefits it can provide in the realm of education.

Bradley’s clinical background includes many years working in intensive care and lecturing at multiple universities in Australia. He has also had multiple contracts to work overseas, two of those within Afghanistan and Iraq working with military forces; so quite a diverse clinical background.  However, in the last couple of years, Bradley has established a new business called ‘Bundle of Rays’. In today's episode Bradley goes into specifics on exactly what the business involves; how he incorporates the use of such technologies into nursing education; and I ask specific questions surrounding EXACTLY how one goes about using such technology.

Sharon shares her experiences in her role via her book, titled: 'One Woman's War & Peace: A Nurse's Journey in the Royal Australian Air Force. Sharon has also served as a council member for the Australian War Memorial (AWM) for close to 4 years. The purpose of this episode is to provide an update on what to expect on ANZAC Day; we discuss other concepts such as the importance of ANZAC Day, the challenges that may face Veterans on this day; and we conclude by providing an update on the Vivian Bullwinkel project. MAJ Kylie Hasse MACN - Military Nursing

MAJ Kylie Hasse MACN - Military Nursing

Welcome back to another episode of The ACN Podcast.

This has been an episode I have been looking forward to releasing for months. It has been formally approved through all chain of commands.

Today's guest is MAJ Kylie Hasse. Many ACN members will recognise that name. MAJ Hasse has been an active member within our community for quite a while; most recently being a participant of ACN's Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program.

MAJ Kylie Hasse has been a Nursing Officer within the Australian Army for 12 years. This time includes two Operational Deployments to the Middle East; and having been awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to Duty.

The purpose of today's episode is to showcase the role of the Nursing Officer within the Australian Army. The role of a Nursing Officer in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) isn't a highly publicised one.

MAJ Hasse starts the episode by defining the role of a Nursing Officer. After recently coming off a posting as a Career's Advisor, MAJ Hasse describes some of the possible career progressions Nursing Officers in the Australian Army can have; and outlines some of the unique challenges these nurses face.

I hope you enjoy. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send them through to my new email address: ben.jenkins@acn.edu.au

Later this year, I will be also be releasing episodes with Nursing Officers from the Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force; along with some incredible Medics.
