6.3.23 Interview with Perry Thompson of RBPS

6.3.23 Interview with Perry Thompson of RBPS

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

Perry Thompson is not quite “on a mission from God,” as the fictional Blues Brothers would say. Still, he is on a musical journey to grow the four-year-old Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society (RBPS) into an international nonprofit organization that honors all genres of Black music, including rhythm & blues, jazz, soul, hip hop, reggae, gospel, and Latin soul.

The initial RBPS chapter is based in Atlantic City and the resort city is expected to be the site of a RBPS Preservation Center. According to Thompson, who is the founder, CEO, and president of the organization, the center will have actual exhibits from artists including albums and historic items.

More than just honoring the musical artists who have contributed to the different genres of music mentioned above, the RBPS and the preservation center will spotlight disc jockeys, composers, producers, journalists, and more.

The organization has already been recognized by Gov. Phil Murphy during Black History Month earlier this year for preserving “Black music culture … in the illustrious State of New Jersey.”

Meanwhile, Assemblyman Donald Guardian honored Thompson and the RBPS with a Legislative Proclamation noting its achievements so far, including conducting classroom college tours – taking place at Stockton University last November and featuring Reggie Reg of famed hip hop group Cash Crew – and presenting a talk on singer and pianist Nina Simone during Black History Month (also at Stockton University).

This month, RBPS held three virtual lectures on Instagram titled “This Day in Music,” which included a discussion on Jimi Hendrix and the Experience’s inaugural performance (Oct. 6), Prince’s adoption of a symbol to represent his name (Oct 13), and Snoop Dogg’s 50th birthday, (Oct. 20).

Thompson developed these lecture series with RBPS Vice President, COO, and Artist-in-Residence Sonja Elise Freeman (aka Queen Diva). Currently, Freeman and RBPS are turning Freeman’s critically acclaimed off-Broadway production, “Strength of a Woman: A Phyllis Hyman Tribute,” into an album and documentary.

Thompson wants to create a curriculum on the history of Black music for schools. To that end, he will be making a 90-minute presentation at the New Jersey Education Association’s annual convention in Atlantic City next month.

He also hopes to start different RBPS chapters throughout the country, including two later this year in New York and California respectively. “We will also try to build this globally,” he said. “One of my goals is to speak before the United Nations, presenting a global presentation on Black music culture.”

RBPS also interviews musical artists and/or those related to them or who have worked with them via live Instagram broadcasts. Interviews have included: Claudette Rogers Robinson, formerly of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (she was also married to Smokey Robinson); Heather Hayes, daughter of singer and composer Isaac Hayes; Deeana Brown, daughter of James Brown; and others.

Thompson is originally a native of Queens and a graduate of the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts. He is a singer and keyboardist who notes the influence of Black music on popular music throughout the decades, especially the impact of Black blues artists on rock-n-roll legends such as Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton.

He says anyone can be an RBPS member: “If you love the culture of Black music, we welcome you!”

Find out more about RBPS on Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok by searching @RBPSOC, or on Instagram via @perrythompsonrbpsoc. (Taken from https://njbmagazine.com/njb-news-now/rhythm-blues-preservation-society-calls-atlantic-city-home/)

3.18.2023 Interview with D3CADE

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

D3CADE is a brilliant and talented rapper from Oklahoma. His real name is Cade Henderson and he’s twenty-seven years old. Cade was born with a birth defect called spina bifida, which caused his spinal cord to grow out of his back. Cade’s mother was told that he’d never be able to walk or talk. Cade started walking when he was two years old and started talking before that. Cade’s lost his father to murder when he was just nine months old. And he uses leg braces to walk around. To say that Cade’s life has been hard would be an understatement. But that never stopped Cade in any way. Cade has always been a warrior and has always fought through whatever stood in his way. He has had a dream of becoming an outstanding musician, and has been working towards that dream since he was 13 years of age. Music means everything to Cade because that’s what he loses himself to in order to fight back and make things work.

In 2014, his song “Antagonistic Radio” was listed by DJ Premier as his #12 song of 2013.

In 2016, K-Rino released 7 albums in one day. Such a large amount of material has rarely, if ever, been released within such a short time span.

One backronym, which can be found on “Temple of Doom” and “Break it Down,” K-Rino has used for his name at least twice is “Killer Rhymes Intellectually Nullifying Opponents”

1.28.23 Interview with Moo-You

Raised in Houston, Texas with a great respect and love for music of all genres. "Some of my biggest influences muwesically are 2pac, Jay Z. Nas Scarface, DJ Screw, SUC, Outkast, T., and UGK "Just out of respect for the craft as kid I remember I passed on a lot of shit for the sake of getting better musically whether it was parties, or just hanging out. My whole thing was I wanted to be able to create a quality of music that could compete with what was out." I just knew the more time I put in the better ! would be at it, so creating with the intent of getting better not just for the sake of saying that I created something was and still is my mindset. I just think there's a difference when you approach it like that and when you don't and it clearly shows. Over time it became about more than just the technical part to me at this point all of that is still important in my head but I'm also in it for self expression and the idea of one being able to be free with their art and voice - (From the Biography of Mookie aka Moo-You).

D3Cade is a brilliant and talented rapper from Oklahoma. His real name is Cade Henderson and he’s twenty-six years old. Cade was born with a birth defect called spina bifida, which caused his spinal cord to grow out of his back. Cade’s mother was told that he’d never be able to walk or talk. Cade started walking when he was two years old and started talking before that. Cade lost his father to murder when he was just nine months old. And he uses leg braces to walk around.
To say that Cade’s life has been hard would be an understatement. But that never stopped Cade in any way. Cade has always been a warrior and has always fought through whatever stood in his way. He has had a dream of becoming an outstanding musician and has been working towards that dream since he was 13 years of age. Music means everything to Cade because that’s what he loses himself to in order to fight back and make things work. Cade’s talent lies in being able to put a beat to anything that he can imagine and then writing the lyrics to express himself.
I am an independent hip-hop artist based out of Oklahoma. I released my debut album Every Step Is A Struggle in December 2019, which was eight songs straight from the heart. I started performing back in August 2019, and since then, I have done well over 30+ shows to date. I am currently working on 3 EPs. The first is titled Altered Aspiration, the second is titled Captivating Conversations, and the third is titled Tornado Season Vol. 1. Tornado Season will actually be a country rap EP. I am also working on my follow-up album titled Every Scar Has A Story my albums will be a 3 part series, the first was Every Step Is A Struggle, the second will be Every Scar Has A Story and the third will be called Every Dawg Has His Day.
I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from others is my story. I was told id never be doing any of this so everything I do is a check in the W Column for me in my opinion, I perform in a wheelchair. Also, due to spina bifida, I can’t stand long periods of time so that’s why I use the wheelchair. I am most proud of myself for overcoming all these obstacles in my life and following my passion and love for what I do, music! Overall I want to just be the best me I can be! I want to show kids growing up with a story like me that it doesn’t matter what cards you are dealt in life. If you put your mind, heart, and soul towards whatever it is you want to accomplish and actually put the work in, then you can and will do it! Determination is the best characteristic to have if you are wanting to reach success.

4.12.22 Interview with sectiontoo

4.12.22 Interview with sectiontoo

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

“I’ve always felt like I have no room to fail,” Sean Lawrence says to me. It’s a fear that’s worked in Sean’s favor, who has one of the most polished discographies of any rising artist I’ve discovered. Known professionally as sectiontoo, who prefers to go by his stage name, masterfully produced his first album Portrait with the lyrical maturity of an experienced artist. sectiontoo’s commitment to his craft is minutely eclipsed by his talent, and he’s not shy about taking credit where it's undeniably due. Sitting across from me under the glass panels of an atrium on Madison Avenue, New York, sectiontoo is immediately open to sharing and be heard. Dusk sets in slowly on a sunny afternoon as he tells me about the power music held in his childhood. Born and raised in Queens, he first began actively experimenting with music at 15 when he taught himself how to make beats on a MacBook. He credits his interest in music to his parents. His Puerto Rican mother played the flute, and his Guyanese father built speakers from scratch for his work as a DJ. He had taken saxophone lessons in the third grade, but it wasn’t until his teenage years that this fascination grew into a vocation. “I go to school, I come home, I work on music. I go to school, I come home, I work on music,” he says of his routine at age 18. “I remember thinking that everything I needed was in this MacBook,” he laughs. At this point, he was focusing exclusively on music production and selling his beats, without a single song written yet. College changed everything. Studying music and living with musicians at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, sectiontoo realized there were a lot of people who felt the same devotion and sacrificed a lot more. Instead of letting his roommate’s non–stop work ethic dissuade him, it only encouraged him. “From then on, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. I told myself I needed to work much harder,” he says. This self–critique guides him today, too. When speaking about his most recent release, NEVERNOTHING, he is quick to describe it as “just an EP.” “It was seven songs that kept me creative, but it wasn’t super topical,” he explains, lucidly demonstrating his pursuit of perfection given the fact that the album is artfully written, produced, and mastered.

After his first year in New Haven, sectiontoo transferred to the City College of New York, where he began to collaborate with high school friend William Fisher, whose stage name is identite crisis. The two would use the college’s recording studios each Friday to lay down beats and experiment, stockpiling ideas. In January 2018, sectiontoo decided to try his hand at songwriting. His first attempt resulted in "Girls Like Anita," a track that now has over 10,000 streams on Spotify. “It’s based on a girl I had a Spanish class with. She seemed super mysterious, and would show up once a week and sleep when she did,” he says smiling. “I was so enthralled by her. She seemed like she didn’t care about anything—I envied that a little bit,” he continues. Although barely having interacted with this drowsy mystery girl, his song bursts with affection and attitude. The product of this extended time spent in the studio with Fisher became sectiontoo’s first album Portrait, which includes tracks like the funky "Trophies" which has amassed 649,000 streams on Spotify. -Taken from www.34st.com/article/2021/11/sectiontoo

3.16.22 Interview with Derrick McKinney CEO of L.O.U.D Muzik

3.16.22 Interview with Derrick McKinney CEO of L.O.U.D Muzik

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

From his start working as a regional marketing rep for the clothing company FUBU, Derrick has risen in the music industry and created brand opportunities for J Records, Interscope, Akademiks Clothing, and more. He manages Z-Ro and has signed artists like Lil Flip and Doughbeezy. He has created marketing strategies for artists like London On The Track and helped artists get placements on major television and radio campaigns.

While he has worked on the international level, the Alief Elsik graduate has always had Houston on his mind. It led to his formation of L.O.U.D. Muzik, and his focus on bringing a music festival to Houston. He sees something in the city and the talent that is valuable and should be brought to the national stage. And throwing a festival this last December proved that Thomas-McKinney and L.O.U.D Muzik was up for the challenge.

Any conversation with Thomas-McKinney is dominated by his views about how artists should be treated. It's what led him to move into his new office space.

“I want to bring the experience that artists have when they travel to other cities and visit a label,” says Thomas-McKinney as he looks at the L.O.U.D. Muzik logo mounted on the wall. “I’ve never been the one to take a picture in front of a label logo, but I did for mine. L.O.U.D. is an acronym for living your dreams. It's a full-fledged record company with branding, distribution, sales, production, and songwriting. We handle everything ourselves in-house. I want people to get the full experience when they come here.”

The full experience is not just limited to taking a photo in front of a logo. L.O.U.D. also has an in-house studio where artists can record, a marketing office, executive offices, areas for photography, spots for videography, and more. It’s the standard label office you would see in a lot of cities, but it does beg the question why Thomas-McKinney took so long to establish a base.

“We've been planning this for a minute. I've always wanted to have our own business office because it's never been about a recording studio to me. That's become very cliché. It's not a public recording studio. You can't call to say let me put two hours. This is for our in-house artists that are signed to a label that we manage, or projects we pick and choose to work on. You can't go to Warner Brothers and just book four hours at their studio. We wanted to take on that exact same format so our Houston artists don't feel the need to have to relocate. They don't feel the need to move to New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles or Nashville.” (Taken from HoustonPress https://www.houstonpress.com/music/derrick-thomas-mckinney-brings-loud-muzik-and-loud-fest-to-houston-11548416)

10.20.21 Interview with Todd Pierece

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

Todd James Pierce is primarily known as a novelist and short-story writer. He is a graduate of the MFA program at UC Irvine and the Ph.D. program at Florida State University. As the winner of the 2006 Drue Heinz Literature Prize, he is the author of four books (listed below), and his work has appeared in over 80 literary journals and magazines including The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review, Indiana Review, Iowa Review, Mid-American Review, The Missouri Review, North American Review, Northwest Review, Poets & Writers, Puerto del Sol, Shenandoah, The Sun, and Willow Springs. His short stories have been anthologized in college textbooks and have been listed as distinguished stories in Best American Short Stories. Reviewers have hailed his stories as "robust", filled with an "unexpected sense of grace and ease," and as "a beautiful whirl of love and language, longing and mystery." The New York Times described his collection, Newsworld, as adroitly examining the intersection between mass media and private life: "While Pierce's comedic realism unfolds in the background, his heroes ache in their offices and bedrooms--so desperate to communicate through press releases and letters to the editor that they've forgotten how to whisper into a lover's ear."

Currently, he is revising a 600-page narrative nonfiction book that tells the story of the men and women who built the first wave of American theme parks in the 1950s, as well as editing two new anthologies of short fiction: Dead Neon (a collection of post-apocalyptic fiction due out from the University of Nevada Press late in 2010) and Contemporary American Short Shorts (a collection of extremely short stories due out from MacAdam/Cage early in 2011).
