ESL English Grammar-The 4 Conditionals Explained Ep 540
English language learners often struggle with the English grammar concept of conditionals. In this lesson, I’ll explain the 4 conditional types in a straightforward way, along with examples of each type and its use.  As a bonus, there is even a quiz at the end of the lesson to check you  have improved your understanding. A Practical English Grammar Lesson To Help You Understand And Use Conditionals In English ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/esl-english-grammar-4-conditionals/ Given there are only 4 types of  conditional, you would think it is a pretty simple topic. Just learn the  4 types and it’s done. But as we often find in English grammar, the devil is in the detail. There are so many potential use cases for conditional types you can feel overwhelmed. So in this English podcast lesson,  we start with making sure you understand the rules for each type. So  you have the tools to understand any use of conditional you might come  across. Even if you’ve never taken an English grammar class, you’ll be  able to follow my logical explanations and examples. Your  grammar is a reflection of your image. Good or bad, you have made an  impression. And like all impressions, you are in total control. ⭐ Jeffrey Gitomer, Author You may notice this lesson is a Listen&Learn lesson. English Listening Practice-A Trip To The Vet Ep 539
Today, you’ll get the opportunity to practice your English listening skills with a podcast that uses natural conversational English.  The topic is about my pet cats and a trip to the veterinary service.  You will pick up lots of useful vocabulary and get an insight into pet  ownership in the UK. Gain Confidence In Your English Skills With Regular English Listening Practice ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-uk-vet-visit/ Talking about everyday topics, in a natural  conversation, is a great way for you to learn about life in the UK, a  little about me while you improve your English listening comprehension  and pronunciation skills. Training your brain to listen and understand spoken English is a critical part of making the move to speaking English. If  you can listen and understand a conversation in real-time, without  translation. Then that will free up a lot more time for your brain to  plan and say what you need to say when it comes time to speak. We all  acquire language using listening skills,  the way you learned your first ‘native’ language as a baby. The better  you are at listening, the easier it will be to speak English. A  quick note about our move to producing videos and audio podcasts. If you  are a regular listener and notice some changes in the audio quality as  we move over to video and audio production, don’t worry. I noticed them  as well. Having perfected the production process for audio only  podcasts, it’s been quite a learning experience to produce video. 7 English Idioms That Use The Word Leg Ep 538
In this video podcast, I will explain idioms with the English word ‘leg’ in them. English idioms are an odd part of the English language, and not knowing about them can  catch English language learners out. The best way to deal with them is  to focus on the popular ones, the ones you are more likely to hear in an  everyday English conversation. Today I’m going to break each idiom down  into understandable parts and give you lots of examples. There is even a  quiz to test yourself at the end. Listen and Learn 7 English Idioms with Legs ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-idioms-leg/ Now, before we get started, you  should probably know a little more about the learning approach we use  here at Adept English. There is a lot more going on when you listen to  one of our podcasts. You can find out more about Listen and Learn on our website. We will help you learn consciously, and our Listen and Learn method will help you learn unconsciously too. If you don’t listen/watch us on Spotify or YouTube,  you probably don’t know it, but we have a new video studio. Behind the  scenes, we have started video recording our lessons at the same time as  we record the lesson audio. From a podcast listeners point of view, we  hope very little has changed, lots of great English language learning  content to listen to as you commute to work or go out jogging. For the  people who can watch us. The enormous advantage of video is we can build the transcript right into display and deliver more value to our audience. Yet Another Part Of Speech English Learners Struggle With-Homonyms Ep 537
English has some words which sound similar when you say them, and can even have the same spelling, but have a different meaning. Today we are going to talk about homonyms in our English grammar lesson, what they are, and why they are problematic for new English  language learners. As usual, we provide lots of English listening  practice to help you spot them and avoid confusion when you communicate  with people using them. Homonyms Are A Part Of Speech That Many English Learners Struggle With ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/parts-of-speech-homonym/ Some of you may have noticed our first video podcast on Monday. The idea is to publish the same great English lesson you expect to listen to but also include video, and a better follow along transcription built into the video.  It’s a new process for us and there are a lot of technical changes to  getting the lesson published. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback, and  if you have ideas, or problems, then please send us an email to tell us  about your experience. If all goes well, we will publish video/audio  podcasts from now on. English grammar doesn’t need to be boring! There are lots of interesting things to learn about homonyms. Listening to this podcast several times will help your store what you learn in your longer term language memory. We recommend you use spaced repetition as part of your listening process. So once you’ve finished listening to the podcast,  why not add a reminder with siri to play the podcast again in a few  days, then maybe a week’s time. English Listening Practice Talking About Empathy Ep 536
Today’s English speaking practice lesson, the topic I’m going to talk about is the concept of empathy.  And because this is Adept English, you can increase your English  vocabulary while also bettering your pronunciation and listening comprehension. So that’s the advantage of our listen and learn method, all you have to do is listen to improve your English fluency. An English Speaking Practice Lesson Focused On Empathy ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-practice-topic-empathy/ I  really encourage you to think about adding "Listening Practice" to your  English language learning routine. It’s a free and easy English language learning method that gives very good results. So  what is empathy? If you’re thinking, it sounds like an emotion, and  that’s correct. Empathy is the ability to understand and share in  another person’s feelings. If you want to connect with someone, see  something of yourself in them. You understand them on an emotional  level, and that’s called empathy. Broadly speaking, the short words are the best, and the old words best of all. ⭐ Winston Churchill This  is my first video podcast, and I’d love to hear what you think about  it. Parts Of Speech-English Modal Verbs Ep 535
Modal  verbs are everywhere! They are a big part of speech in the English  language. Frankly, in English we use them so much that after a while  they become invisible to us native speakers. Which is why we need to  make them visible again. That’s what today's English podcast is all about. Start learning English grammar the easy way, through listening. Parts Of Speech English Modal Verbs - Practice Using Them Correctly ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/parts-of-speech-english-modal-verbs/ If you are learning to speak English, you know modal verbs are an essential component of the structure of a language,  because they enable us to carry out actions or show our attitude  towards something. Something we will all want to do at some point in a  conversation. But it can be quite difficult to understand when you come  from another language. So the  modal verb “could”, if used in conjunction with another verb, will  change the meaning of the sentence. For example, in the sentence “Billy  could eat like a horse,” the modal verb “could” is used alongside the  verb “eat” to change its meaning by implying that Billy has the  capability to eat a lot. As always, the best way to learn this  type of verb modification is to hear them being used. So today we have  lots and lots of practice sentences which walk you through how modal  verbs can and should be used to bring your English conversations alive. If You Want To Speak English Fluently And Confidently-You Need To Listen Ep 534
Today we talk about living costs, rising energy bills and the impact of this on people’s lives. Whether you’re preparing for IELTS exams or just want to learn some new English vocabulary, we fill our podcast with tips and advice that will help you enhance your English-speaking skills. Learn English Language Listening Skills The Easy Way And Speak Confidently ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/learn-english-language-fluency/ The  cost of living in the UK is going crazy. I’m sure it’s the same for  you. Petrol per litre has gone from £1.15 to £1.76. My food shopping was  about £100 a week for 3 people and 2 cats, now it’s about £145, for  nearly the same things. My gas bill has gone up 3 times, and it’s now  85% more expensive, but we’ve used less to keep the costs down. It’s  happening for everything though, my son’s computer chair broke (OK he  broke it!) I tried to buy the same chair on Amazon, and it was nearly  50% more, and it’s only a year old. Talking in English about interesting topics is a great way to improve your English listening and comprehension skills.  Humans love a good story, and we have developed to keep this type of  “story” information in our longer term memory. The more relevant the  story to our survival, the more likely we are to store the information.  So our podcasts take advantage of this. If you want to speak  English fluently and confidently, you are going to need to listen to  lots and lots of English being spoken by a fluent English speaker. Memorising Common English Vocabulary And Phrases Using Music Ep 533
Today we are going to look at a memorising technique that uses music. We are going to see how you can apply this powerful learning approach to making learning English vocabulary and phrases easier. Music is a fantastic way to get new vocabulary into your brain.  It’s an easy way to improve your English vocabulary and fluency. This  is a method that I have found to be really effective and at the end of the podcast, I discuss the facts that support why it works. How Studying English Words And Phrases With Music Helps Me Remember ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/common-english-words-musical-memory/ You  will often hear us talk about repeat listening and spaced repetition as  the go to learning technique for improving your English language  comprehension. But we don’t talk as much about techniques for learning  English phrases and vocabulary. So in today’s English phrases and  vocabulary lesson, we are going to talk about things you can do to help you with remembering lists of common English words, like the days of the month, days of the week, etc. If  you are new here, welcome! I’d like to mention that we have a principle  here in Adept English, a principle of only learning useful English. The  English you need to hold a fluent English conversation in the UK today.  We avoid using dry old English books with vocabulary and phrases you  just don’t hear being used in everyday English conversations. Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. ⭐ Chinese Proverb We  are all busy people, and our time is precious. We want you to be  efficient and spend your English learning time as effectively as  possible. It’s why we have a course which helps you focus on the 500 most common English words, which make  up around 80% of all the words you would use in a conversation with just  about anyone right here in the UK today. The point is, you learn  the vocabulary you need first and then move on to specialist vocabulary.  You don’t learn about English vocabulary for flying a plane if you’re  only ever going to work in a hotel or drive a taxi. You might want to  learn plane specific vocabulary eventually, but you would definitely  want to learn the 500 most common words first. And then learn hotel or  taxi specific vocabulary and then finally you're going to invest the  time in learning about planes. British Accents vs American Accents As We Practise English Pronunciation Ep 532
Today we are going to look at the differences between British English and American English pronunciation.  Do you really want to sound more like James Bond, Benedict Cumberbatch,  and Daniel Craig than a mix of Bill Murray, President Obama, and Ben  Stiller? If you want to sound more British when you speak, rather than  American, then this podcast will share some secrets that will help you understand why we sound the way we do. Learn What English Accent You Have As We Talk About The Differences Between British & American Accents ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/practise-english-pronunciation-british-vs-american-accent/ Of  course, there are many wonderful British accents, and there are a lot  of lovely American accents as well. I’m going to give this lesson using  my accent. I would class my accent as contemporary received  pronunciation RP, which is just a way of saying I speak using an accent  you would hear in and around London and the South East of England. My  accent is a clear and correctly spoken accent, so it’s a good place for  ESL (English as a second language) learners to start. It’s the sort of  accent you would want for your spoken English to be understood around  the world. If you want to sound Scottish or Welsh or Irish, or want one  of the many lovely regional accents to be found in the UK, then this  probably isn’t the lesson for you. I know I say this a lot, but I think it’s important. Ultimately, having an accent when you speak English should not matter.  But accents, especially strong ones, can sometimes impede people  understanding what you say. As a new language learner, you probably  don’t want any additional barriers to being understood. You will  definitely adopt the accent from your English language teacher, and it  won’t be easy to correct later on. So knowing that should help you make a  more informed decision about what accent your language teacher has, and  whether that matters to you Learn more about our courses here: https://adeptenglish.com/language-courses/ Adept English is here to help with FREE English lessons and language  courses that are unique, modern and deliver results. English Conversations For English Learners-Why Having A Big Brain Is Not Always An Advantage Ep 530
A podcast to help you learn English naturally and improve your English listening skills.  Today we learn why we poor humans suffer more from fight or flight and  why having a clever brain isn’t always an advantage. So while you learn  new English vocabulary, build your long term English language memory and  work on your listening comprehension, you will also gain an interesting  insight into how we humans work at a mind and body level. Learn English, Learn About Your Brain, And Listen To It All In An Easy To Consume Way ✔ Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/conversations-in-english-deal-with-stress/ If  you’re wondering why an English conversation about body and mind is  going to help you learn to speak English fluently, then you’re probably  new to Adept English. So firstly hello and welcome. Our approach to  language learning is through language acquisition, an approach you’ve  already used and know works, because it was the approach you used to  learn your first ‘native’ language as a child. We use the same  proven approach you used for your first language to help you learn new  languages. One of the most important aspects of this type of learning is  lots of repeat listening. Most people will only listen to something several times if it’s interesting. So all of our listen and learn podcasts are about interesting things. Being  self aware is a very good first step to reducing unnecessary stress and  anxiety. If you don’t know why something is happening, you are going to  struggle to come up with a plan to help solve your problems. I love  understanding why we behave the way we do and today I’m going to share  with you a brief insight into why we humans do what we do, even when  it’s not good for us. We often regard our human brains as one of  the most complex objects in the known universe. No other physical  structure can rival its capabilities. But despite all its astounding  powers, it has its fair share of flaws. We discover in today’s show, our  paranoia and anxiety are more prevalent than any other species’,  because our fight-or-flight response kicks in when there is no real  danger. A Sensible Attitude To Achieving Your English Speaking Fluency Goals Ep 529
If you want to learn to speak English fluently as quickly as possible, listening to this English podcast is a great place for you to start. We offer practical, free and proven  English language learning techniques that hundreds of thousands of  English language students listen to every month. Today we talk about  what your expectations of how long it takes to learn to speak English fluently should be. Learning English Speaking Fluency In A Month? Are You Kidding Me? ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-takes-how-long-to-learn/ I’ve noticed recently a trend on the internet/social media and YouTube for people to make claims about learning to speak a language that is  just impractical. Being a language learner myself and being told that  some people are learning to speak a new language fluently in a single  month is just frustrating. Most, and by that I mean 99%, of us won’t be  learning a new language to fluency in a month. Why  do these claims of learning a new language to fluency in a month seem  exaggerated? Well, take this example, the US military spends millions of  dollars using the best techniques and experts in language learning in  the world. This US military programme per-selects only people who show  an inbuilt skill will learn language learning. Guess what? It still  takes students on this ultra specialist, elite, best of the best US  Military program longer than a month. You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over. ⭐ Richard Branson I’m  not saying learning a new language from nothing to fluency in less than  a month is impossible. Avoid The Number 1 Barrier To English Language Fluency-Translating In Your Head Ep 527
Do you ever stop listening to someone while they’re speaking because you’re too busy translating what they said? You are not alone! Lots of English language learners fall into the trap  of language translation. The good news is you can learn to stop that  slow translating process and move to true spoken English fluency with the strategies I set out in this English podcast lesson. Stop Translating In Your Head Level Up Your English Language Fluency ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/learn-english-conversation-fluency/ I know, it’s frustrating! We all start out with translation, but translation prevents fluency!  It seems counter-intuitive that the only way to learn a new language is  to build a vocabulary and to do that you need to translate, but in  doing this we prevent ourselves from becoming better the more we  translate! There is nothing  wrong with this at the start of your language learning journey. The  problem happens when you think scaling this skill up is the right way to  continue getting better at English fluency. Language is wine upon the lips. ⭐ Virginia Woolf The  best way to think about this is to imagine your early English language  vocabulary as a set of tools you need to get your language learning  started. Imagine that these tools help you build a bridge, but once you  finish the bridge, you need to put the tools down and stop using them.  Your focus should now be on using the bridge you’ve built. PRESENT TENSE Fully Explained With Examples As We Listen And Learn English Grammar Ep 524
The PRESENT TENSE in English: We’re going to work on the present tense in our English grammar lesson today. I want to get you thinking about how you can use your knowledge of the tenses to your advantage when speaking. We use tenses to explain when an action takes place, and explaining when an action takes place is an important part of ALL our everyday conversations. An English Grammar Podcast Lesson That Focuses On The Present Tense ✔Lesson transcript:  https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-learn-grammar-present-tense/ So  what is present tense? The present tense is one of the verb tenses in  English and is used to describe actions that are currently happening, or  include routine actions that are true. I'm sure there are more formal definitions, but this is how I think of it, and it's a practical way to think about it. First the good news, present tense conjugation is pretty simple in English. You can just listen and learn these. However, and the reason for today’s lesson, the other forms of  the present tense can be difficult to learn through listening alone. So  in this English grammar podcast,  we’re going to walk through each form of present tense and explain what  you should watch out for when you listen and learn English. As  always, there are lots of examples in this English lesson, and because  it’s important that you really do grasp the different forms, I’ve  included a quick test at the end of the lesson to check your  understanding. 20 Irregular Verbs To Make You A Better English Speaker With English Grammar Listening Practice Ep 506
Today we listen and learn English irregular verbs. In just 15 minutes we are  going to explain, with lots of examples, 20 of the most common irregular verbs. All you need to do is find your headphones and relax and listen. The best way to deal with these tricky verbs is to recognize them as they are being used. Lots of listening, and lots of examples of the verbs being used will help make you familiar with the past simple and past participle  verb forms. See how well you do in the quiz, check the answers at the  end and start listening! Irregular Verbs Learned The Easy Way Through English Grammar Listening Practice ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/grammar-english-irregular-verbs/ English  verbs are pretty straightforward until you get to irregular verbs. These are verbs that don’t use the usual -d, -ed, or -ied spelling or  pronunciation for the past simple or past participle. You probably don’t  really care about learning irregular verbs. Who does, really? The point  is, you want to speak English fluently and make an impression on people  with your English language skills. And for this, you will need to understand the past simple and past participle verb forms so your spoken  English sounds right. Now there are plenty of tables that list irregular verbs and their forms on the internet, and you  could try to just learn them by remembering them with no context. This  might work if you only wanted to write in English. However, when  speaking in English, this type of memorisation is not that helpful. The rules of English grammar are largely an artificial construct with little or no bearing on the language as it is spoke. ⭐ Ben Dylan Aaronovitch, Author, Scriptwriter The  good news is there is a simpler and more memorable way to learn  irregular verbs. You just need to hear them being used, over and over,  in sensible spoken examples. Lots of repeat listening practice of  irregular verbs being used will help you recognize them when others are  using them. Importantly, you will hear the correct form being used and you will notice when they are not correct. 3 Simple Rules for Using MODALS Correctly-Learning English Grammar Ep 502
Today we fix any mistakes you might make with English modal verbs.  With just 3 simple rules, you will eliminate the main issues you can  think of when using these tricky verbs. If you have been having problems  with learning English modal verb grammar , you must listen to this podcast. All You Need To Know About The Confusing World Of English Modal Verbs - Learn Grammar The Easy Way ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-learn-grammar-modal-verbs/ Like all of our English podcast lessons,  we use lots of examples to explain how the rules work and how you use  them. At the end of the lesson, you will know what the most common modal  verbs are and how to use them correctly. I’m going to explain each of  the rules and how they apply to all the common modal verbs in English,  and then I’m going to test you by making you the teacher! Modal verbs often show how someone feels about something or how he or she intends to act, so they are really important for conversations.  So using them correctly is important for your English language fluency.  The good news is, there are not that many modal verbs to learn in  English, only 13, and we use less than that in everyday English conversation. It’s a bit of a tradition here at Adept English to start the new year  language learning with English grammar. As we say, “we’re all rusty and we need to blow some cobwebs away”.  We probably haven’t focused on English language learning over the  holidays, and we need to jump back in and get our daily learning  routines back to normal. How To Beat The Procrastination Monster In 2022 Ep 500
Today we get rid of the procrastination monster! In our first English conversation listening podcast, of 2022. We all know that procrastination makes little sense.  And for some people, it’s a habit they find difficult to get out of. If  you’re always waiting until the last minute to get things done and you plan on improving your English language fluency this year, then this is the podcast to listen to. Learn How To Beat Procrastination And Talk More In English Conversations In 2022 ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/conversations-in-english-procrastination/ In today’s excellent listening practice, we have a conversation in English all about procrastination and some tips (at the end of the lesson) on how you can avoid it. I talk about why we binge watch on YouTube,  spend hours browsing the Internet, or stare out of the window for no  reason. I give you some tips on what you can do to get focused on your  goals in 2022, all before another year slips away. So first, what is procrastination? Procrastination is when you put something off, even though you know that doing what  needs to be done now would make things easier in the long run. It’s that  task or activity we should do today, but we find an excuse to put it  off until tomorrow, as some might say "mañana". Procrastination makes easy things hard, hard things harder.    ⭐ Mason Cooley, Author You don’t need to suffer the ugly clutches of procrastination for  another year. Procrastination is a wicked monster that needs to be  slain. I am going to show you how to avoid all of those bad habits that  stop you from achieving your goals and dreams. Along the way, you will  learn some new English vocabulary and idioms, you will hear and learn  the correct English language pronunciation and intonation from a native  English language speaker. STOP Using Boring Words And Say What You Mean In Your English Conversations Ep 498
Today we will learn about a quick and easy way to sound more natural when speaking English. Improving your vocabulary for the most commonly used English words and  phrases will make a tremendous difference to how engaging and articulate  you sound. Listen to this English lesson and what you say will immediately sound more appealing. Listeners will understand what you are saying more clearly and want to hear more. Which Words Do You Need To Stop Using In Your English Conversations? ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-conversation-stop-using-boring-words/ We all know that if someone uses the same word again and again in a  conversation, it quickly becomes boring to listen to. Using the same  limited vocabulary tells listeners you are a new language learner.  Native English speakers vary their use of vocabulary to express their  thoughts and feelings. It’s easy to get some quick and painless wins. Start by identifying  common vocabulary in your conversations, words you “over use” in your  conversations. These are the ones you will need to work on. Practice  substituting these common “generic” adjectives with more precise  adjectives, which are a better way to show what you mean. Using more precise adjectives in the speaking section of IELTS and  TOEFL exams will show your examiner that your grasp of English  vocabulary is good and it will improve your score. In this podcast,  I’ll share more examples of vocabulary substitution. I will provide you  with a step-by-step example of what you should do when you’ve found the  vocabulary you rely on too much and over use in your conversations. So  jump in and start listening! How To Think In English Without Translating In Your Head Ep 496
If you want to become an effective English language speaker and thinker, there are a few simple strategies that can make it happen. Listen to today’s English podcast lesson to find out more. You’re going to become a stronger English speaker. How To Speak English, In A Way That Makes Sense. No More Translating In Your Head. ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-without-translating/ Learning a language through translating can be bittersweet; it gives  language students a basic knowledge of the language. However, this is  limited knowledge, because this type of knowledge is the slowest to  recall, and slow recall equals poor speech. Using translation will hurt your ability to speak naturally and  fluently. Translating in your head is distracting if you are also trying  to focus on what someone else is saying. The good news is you're already doing one of the most important steps to thinking in English. You’re listening to native English speakers like this podcast.  Lots of English listening and regular, simple, daily activities like  the ones we suggest in this lesson will definitely make a difference to  your spoken English. Understanding Native English Speakers Who Speak Too Fast Ep 495
Today I will show you a common mistake students make when trying to understand English native speakers and also when they do the IELTS listening test. You are going to discover why learning to comprehend spoken English, listening to a language teacher, is simply not enough, and what you can do about it. Improve your English fluency today, listen to the Adept English podcast. How To Understand What Native English Speakers Are Saying When They Talk Too Fast In Every Day English Conversations ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-conversation-understand-fast-english/ Native English speakers often use shortcuts to help say things faster in everyday English conversations. Depending on who you are talking to, native English speakers will use several language tricks to speed up what’s being said. This can make it really difficult for new English language learners to follow and understand what’s being said. Native English speakers have a lot of tools to help them speed up what they want to say. You might hear brand names, slang, idioms or phrases that help express in less time what needs saying. We have lots of lessons on these topics and today we work on what is probably the most common cause for new English language students not understanding a native English speaker in an everyday conversation. It may seem difficult at first, but once you understand what is going on, native English speakers are easier to understand than you think. After just a few weeks of listening practice, you’ll be amazed at how close you can come to understanding English like a native speaker. Homophones-Avoid Mistakes With Confusing Words As We Learn The English Language Ep 494
Not  knowing what a homophone is or what the common ones are could leave you  sounding silly in your next English conversation. In today’s English grammar podcast we explain the problem, we help you practice spotting common homophones  and we test you just to keep you on your toes as we learn how to speak  the English language. Everything You Need To Know About Homophones In English, Zeroing In On The Confusing Ones Let’s face it: All languages have at least one annoying characteristic or grammar rule you just have to accept and learn. The English language has a lot  of rules that seem arbitrary, with countless exceptions and "special  cases" that are just plain weird. Homophones are a great example of  this. The problem with  homophones is that they can trip you up. Homophones are tricky because  they sound the same when spoken, but have a different meaning. Or said  another way, a perfect way of catching out new English language students during a conversation. What did one homophone say to comfort the other homophone? Their, there, they're. ⭐ Anonymous Although  in today’s lesson we stick to an Adept English rule, and only work on  the homophones you really need, the most common ones. I spent some time  trying to identify what single sounding English word has the most  possible meanings. I'm sure you can suggest better ones,  but I came up with "Carrot, carat, karat and caret". 4 Words which  sound "Exactly the same" when spoken in English. They mean; a vegetable,  the weight of gems, the fineness/purity of gold and finally a  typographical mark. The First Skill To Focus On If You Want To Speak Fluent English Ep 493
If  you want to become fluent in English, a fluent English speaker, if you  want to understand and speak English in a way that’s natural and flows,  then you need to prioritise listening to and understanding everyday people speaking English. Today I’m going to talk about how we learn to speak a language and what’s happening with your brain when you speak English. The One Skill That Will Make You Fluent In English Speaking ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-how-to/ I  can’t count the number of times I have spoken to an English language student and hear "I can understand, write and read English pretty well.  However, when it comes to speaking the language I get stuck." If you  want to learn to speak a language well, it is much more important to  listen to, and quickly understand what you hear, than to read and write. If you want to speak English well, you need to listen to a lot of spoken English, until your language comprehension is great, and really fast. Traditional  approaches to teaching new languages, especially classroom based  learning, spend a lot of time on reading and writing and a lot less time  on listening and speaking. The language used is often fake, made up,  and pretty useless in the real world. Poor language comprehension,  and being slow to comprehend what you are listening to is the No. 1  reason people struggle to speak a new language. You get so focused on  working out what’s being said to you. You have little or no time to work  on what you need to say back (your ideas as words and phrases) and how  you need to say it (grammar and pronunciation). Listening to lots and lots of English being spoken naturally is the No. 1 way to improve your English language comprehension skills and comprehension speed. You're  lucky. This way of learning to speak a language is a built in part of  being human. Every single one of us is born with the ability to learn a  language. We all have a language learning toolkit we know works, and we  know we can listen and speak a language before we can read or write a  single word in that language. Everyone can learn to speak a new  language. We all have the tools we used to learn to speak our first  language. If you want to speak a language, being able to listen and  understand what you hear automatically is what enables speaking. An Interesting English Listening Practice Lesson About Climate Change Ep 488
In this English listening practice lesson, I have recorded a topic which is about climate change and the recent COP 26 climate conference that was hosted in Glasgow in Scotland by the UK government. Making interesting English lessons is important. Keeping you focused and engaged in the content you need to learn to improve your English skills is half the battle when learning a new language. In this lesson, you will hear lots of  English vocabulary, idioms, phrases and British culture and views, so jump in and start listening now. This lesson will help you improve your English language listening skills. ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-lessons-listening-practice-climate/ The  COP26 was a two week UN-sponsored international conference held in the  Scottish Event Campus, Glasgow, UK. COP stands for ‘Conference of the  Parties’ this is a term used by the United Nations Climate Change which  is used to refer to meetings held annually during its Convention period.  The conference seeks to reduce global warming to well below 2 degrees  Celsius, aiming for 1.5 degrees if possible. With important countries not attending the event, and some important world leaders sleeping during presentations,  ask yourself, are we taking these problems seriously any more? Even the  event’s name suggests we have genuine problems agreeing to make changes  collectively. We are in the 26th meeting and we still don’t have a  common world agreement dealing with the key issue of temperature rises. Not only can you practice listening to natural, conversational English being used in real-life situations,  talking about real-world events. You can also read along and look up  difficult vocabulary at the same time using our free PDF transcript for every audio lesson.  If you’re an English language learner and want to bring your listening  skills up a notch, you’re in the right place. She is Pregnant! How To Express Your Joy Using The English Grammar Of Exclamations Ep 487
Today’s lesson is about the English grammar of exclamations, and the language used in expressing emotions. The  grammar of exclamations can get complicated because there are different  kinds of exclamations, each with specific rules on how to use them. In  this lesson, you will learn specific exclamations to talk about how you  feel in response to hearing some news someone has just told you. To keep you on your toes, we have a quiz at the end of the podcast where you can practice what you’ve learned. Let's learn the English grammar of exclamations! ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-learn-grammar-exclamations/ Whenever  I hear the word ‘Exclamation’, I think of something that is exciting,  happy or sad. The general idea behind an exclamation is to express your  emotions in reaction to an event or news. Although it’s easy in today’s  use of English online to slip into acronyms like LOL! or even swearing  to express your emotions, we won’t be doing that in our lesson. In this  lesson, we give you a range of exclamations which you can use to safely express your feelings, appropriate for any English conversation. Enjoy today’s podcast and make sure you practice what you’ve learned by repeat listening to  the lesson. You don’t have to listen to the same podcast over and over,  although you could. It’s best to listen to a lesson, then maybe the next  day listen again. If you feel you’ve remembered most of what you’ve  heard, then come back and listen to the lesson again in a week. We call  this type of learning spaced repetition learning. You can do this will  multiple podcast lessons at the same time. So when you are not repeat  listening to one, you can repeat listen to another. We  know that this type of spaced repetition learning encourages our brains  to take notice of what we are trying to learn and improves the  likelihood of this type of information being stored in our longer term  memory. Which is exactly what we want for language learning, which needs  automatic recall from long-term language memory. I’m often asked,  “How many times do I need to listen?” well it’s always going to be  different for every language learner. That said, I would recommend that  you need to hear the word or phrase you are listening to a minimum of 20  times spaced out over time. So, for example, let’s say a phrase “What a  disaster!” appears 5 times in a lesson. To hear it 20 times, you will  need to listen to the lesson 4 times spread out over approximately 10  days. Remember, it’s not an exact science, so don’t get stuck on the statistics. Just plan for some repeat listening and aim to listen to key phrases, pronunciations, vocabulary etc. a minimum of 20 times. How Your Brain Grows With English Listening Practice Ep 486
In today’s English listening practice we learn about ordinary people learning huge amounts of information, so  much information they actually grow the size of their brains doing it.  Along the way you will learn about London taxis and British culture.  Listening to everyday English phrases, vocabulary, grammar will help  improve your English listening comprehension skills. English Listening Practice Will Change Your Brain ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-grow-your-brain/ Your brain is amazing. It’s the most complex object in the known universe, containing around 100 billion neurons, each of which can connect to thousands of other neurons. Our brains are malleable - meaning they grow and change based on what we do with them.  Developing listening skills by listening to everyday English phrases,  vocabulary, grammar will help improve your English listening  comprehension skills. Your  brain can keep changing throughout your life. Think of your brain as a  muscle. If you exercise your brain, it will grow bigger and stronger.  You can think of learning a new language, like English, as going to the  brain gym and working out. As with any skill, it takes a little time and  repeat practice, but you can and will grow your brain as you learn to speak English. All of our English listening lessons are designed to help you with learning and memorising English  vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and more in a fun and easy way. We  design our lessons this way because we know that most people can  maintain focused listening for about 10-15 minutes. That means you  really pay attention to what is being said and how it is said. We know  that information given as stories, with lots of context, helps people  with storing information in the brain. We know that spaced repetition is  a very efficient way of keeping new information stored in your brain’s  longer term memory. Giving you English lessons in the way that we do is no accident. We have a reason for keeping our English lessons typically 2000 words long, with about 500-600 unique English words in each lesson. Our approach to learning to speak English is popular because it works. The science behind the lessons is invisible. All you need to do is find the time to listen and learn. English Idioms For Easy: Easy To Learn Easy To Remember Ep 482
We use English idioms every day. And we use them in big ways and small ways, for fun and for serious meanings. For example, we can say that we’re up to our ears in work,  meaning we’re very busy and it’s hard to find time to do anything else.  Let’s explore and play with some different English idioms for easy! Commonly Used English Idioms For Easy ✔ Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-idioms-for-easy/ A  few words of explanation about the way we approach learning idioms.  Idioms in English can be very confusing for language learners. There are  a lot of English idioms, most of which you would never  hear or use in an English conversation in 2021. To make learning English  idioms as efficient as we can, we focus on the most common and useful  English idioms that originate from everyday speech. So you won’t find a  list of 500 idioms for ‘easy’ in this podcast. You will find the most  popular ones you are most likely to need to understand and use. The hardest portion of English, I must say it: Idioms. ⭐ Flula Borg, German Musician It's been a while since I did a podcast on idioms. What exactly is an idiom? An idiom is a phrase that has a  different meaning from the actual words used. For example "a piece of  cake", as opposed to saying that something was "easy" or that it "went  down like a lead balloon" meaning nobody liked the suggestion. If you  learn idioms in school, you probably learn boring ones that nobody uses.  We’re trying to help you by learning useful idioms that real people  actually use. If you want to talk like a native English speaker, then there is no way to avoid learning English idioms. As I prepared this podcast, it surprised me to see how many English idioms we use for easy, without even thinking about them. So I suggest you listen to this podcast for some new English idioms examples you can use in your everyday English conversations. How To Move From Understanding English To Speaking English With Listening Practice Ep 479
Make The Transition To Actually Being Able To Speak English With Listening Practice ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-how-to-speak-english/ The best way to learn to speak English is through listening to English speakers, English comprehension, and more English listening practice.  Today, we look at the problems with traditional language classes, and why learning a new language is not what it should be. Most language  learning programs are so old-fashioned they should wear top hats and carry walking sticks. Our approach to language learning is a much better way. Learning  to speaking English is not nearly as easy as it should be. The way most  people currently learn English as a foreign language is essentially you  listen to a teacher talking, then practice using what you’ve learnt in a  classroom environment. The problem with this approach is that it’s very  slow, and limited - going to a class once a week for few hours can only  help you improve so much. Most language students won’t learn to speak  English at all, let alone fluently, using this approach. What  if there was a better way? What if you could learn from real life  conversations where you don’t have to concentrate on speaking, but can  just listen and learn? English as a second language doesn’t have to be slow and difficult.  Imagine if instead of learning a new language from the teacher lecturing  at the front of your classroom, you could learn, all day long, from  listening to native speakers who talk naturally and freely about their  own lives. We teach people how to improve their conversational  English listening and speaking, through listening to native English  speakers. It’s the best and fastest way of learning to speaking English.  Our way of learning to speak a new language is popular and gets  results. We help you with listening and comprehension with high quality,  free English lessons.  Lots and lots of repeated listening is the most important skill when  you want to speak a new language and we give you everything you need. Improve Your English Every Day With English Listening Practice Ep 473
English Listening Practice Join the discussion. Listen to learn. ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-lorry-shortage/ Today we practice listening to English language being spoken by a native British English speaker. This  listening practice conversation is about supply issues in the UK. The  subject of this podcast lesson is not that important. The English  language you will learn is. Supply problems in the UK may be  important on Sept 2021, right now, especially if you're being  inconvenienced. However, in a few months, or years, this problem will  have come and gone. The point is the topic is interesting, but the real  value of listening to this is the English listening practice that helps  build up the language learning parts of your brain. When  something goes wrong, it's easy to jump to conclusions. You're angry  and you usually want the problem to just go away as quickly as possible.  It's interesting to see the news headlines, which are all about  failure, panic, etc. All of which encourage people to engage (usually  with advertising) at a superficial and selfish level. A  good truck driver needs discipline. Traffic, weather, eating, sleeping,  showering, fueling, getting work done on the truck; it takes a truck  driver a long time to learn how to jungle everything. ⭐ Joanna Dunham, Actress Politicians use the situation to punish those in power, the people in charge. People who did not want Brexit use it to say,  “I told you so!”. Lorry drivers use the problems to highlight long-term  problems with their industry. The worriers use the problems to  highlight how fragile a world we live in. The climate change people  shout about how we need to consume less. It's exhausting to listen to. In  reality, it's never one simple, obvious reason for the issues we have  in UK lorry based supply delivery today. I can think of at least 6 or 7  contributing factors to the problems we have right now in the UK, and I  know very little about the industry. When you live in a global "just in  time…" delivery world, it's very easy for things to go wrong. One  trend I've noticed in the UK, and in the western world in general, we  are not used to hardships. We have a pretty peaceful life much of the  time. Things typically work and we've all become used to it, so when  something breaks, we typically overreact. Who knows, I might be wrong,  and in a year we still have issues in the UK, but regardless, I can  guarantee that listening to this English language learning podcast will see something positive come from it.Learn more about our courses here: https://adeptenglish.com/language-courses/

How To Talk About Probability In This Learn English Grammar Podcast Ep 472
English Grammar Podcast On Learning About Probability Adverbs ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-learn-grammar-adverb-probability/ In this English language grammar lesson, we further our understanding of adverbs and their use when discussing probability in everyday English conversations. Today we will hear about the contrast between terms such  as certainty and probably, and communicating with others using the  English language by getting comfortable with probabilities. Why  probability? Well, English speakers (I guess everyone) need the ability  to communicate estimates of the chance of something happening in the  future. Talking about certainty and uncertainty is commonplace, and it’s  important to understand the implications of what’s being said. This English podcast lesson will focus on the differences between good and bad odds of future  events and how their usage fits into everyday English conversation. We  will talk through the typical English adverbs used to communicate zero  probability all the way to the best case. Listening to this podcast will leave you with a good chance of understanding "How likely something is" Life is a school of probability. ⭐ Walter Bagehot, Author English  speakers often use words and phrases when speaking about the likelihood  of things happening, “odds,” and the chances of certain events. The  words probability, chance and odds are constantly being used in everyday English language, and it means different things in different contexts. You  may want to know the probability of something happening in the future,  such as finding money on the ground. Or you can ask someone what his or  her probability of something is, like wanting to know how likely he or  she thinks it might rain today. The words and phrases we’ll cover in  this English language podcast lesson will be helpful when you want to  make an estimation or understand the implications of another person's  estimation of the future.Learn more about our courses
