Ep. 128 - God Makes All Things New - Revelation

On episode 128 of the Adorned Podcast, we discuss how God makes all things new and the book of Revelation. The Bible concludes with a vision God gives to John about the second coming of Jesus and the new creation.  God shows John many things about what is going to happen in the future. He shows him that there is coming judgement for those who do not follow Jesus and coming new creation for those who do. He urges believers to stay strong. And ultimately he reminds all of us that death will be defeated once and for all and that in this new creation there will be no more sadness, no more sorrow, and no more sin. Until then we are left in the already and the not yet but longing for God’s promise of making all things new. This is a good story. This is God’s story.

Quotes:

“The plain things are the main things and the main things are the plain things.” -Allister Begg

““John's primary concern is not the how and the when, but the Who and the why.” -Matt Chandler

“God will triumph.” -The Drama of Scripture

“The New Testament ends where the Old Testament ended looking forward waiting for the final fulfillment of the promises of God. Jesus reassures his people “yes I am coming soon” and if we understand of the wonder of what is in store for us we will reply just like the end of revelation “amen, come Lord Jesus.”” -Vaughn Roberts

Ep. 127 - God Shows Us The Way - Acts and The Epistles

Ep. 127 - God Shows Us The Way - Acts and The Epistles

On episode 127 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss how God shows us the way through Acts and the Epistles. The book of Acts begins with the ascension of Jesus. He tells the people that “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Just as Jesus had promised, the Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost. More and more people begin to put their faith in The Lord and this is the beginning of the church! Saul aka Paul, a persecutor of Christians is converted when he encounters Jesus on the road to Damascus. Paul falls in love with Jesus and spends his life spreading the good news of the Gospel. During his multiple missionary journeys, Paul plants churches and writes the letters (or epistles) that now comprise a big portion of the New Testament. In his letters Paul is instructing the Church on basic doctrine, reminding them of the Gospel, and what it looks like to live for Christ. The New Testament also consists of other epistles such as those written by Jesus’s disciples, Peter, James, and John.

Quotes:

“[The ascension is] The time when God the Father restored to His Son the glory that had been His from the foundation of the world.” - R.C. Sproul

“In some Bibles, the book of Acts is referred to as “The Acts of the Holy Spirit.” From the Day of Pentecost forward, the central character of Acts was not the apostles (those who had been with Jesus and had been specifically commissioned for ministry were called “apostles”), but the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit went from Pentecost manifesting His power and person in ways no one had ever seen before.” -R.C. Sproul

Ep. 126 - God Dwells with His People - The Gospels

Ep. 126 - God Dwells with His People - The Gospels

On episode 126 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when God comes to dwell with his people through His son, Jesus. After 400 long years of silence and waiting, we pick up in the Gospels with the arrival of the Messiah. Born of a virgin, in the most humble way. Everything the Old Testament was building towards is finally here. As a tiny baby God enters into his creation to dwell with his people again. He comes to seek and save the lost and to redeem His people. He does this by living a perfect life, dying in our place, paying the debt of our sins so that we can be reconciled back to our holy and righteous Creator. This is the pinnacle of the story, because remember, this is God’s redemptive story and this is how God redeems us.

Quotes:

“Jesus has two complete natures: one fully human and one fully divine. What the doctrine of the hypostatic union teaches is that these two natures are united in one person in the God-man. Jesus is not two persons. He is one person. The hypostatic union is the joining of the divine and the human in the one person of Jesus.” -David Matthis

“The two natures of christ are so united as to be without mixture, confusion, separation, or division, each nature retaining its own attributes.” -R.C. Sproul

“What God in Christ has done through the cross is to rescue us, disclose himself, and overcome evil.” -John Stott

“it is at the cross that God delivers the deathblow to human sin and rebellion and accomplishes the salvation of the world.” -The Drama of Scripture

Ep. 125 - God Cares About the Heart of His People - Wisdom Literature with Courtney Reissig

Ep. 125 - God Cares About the Heart of His People - Wisdom Literature with Courtney Reissig

On episode 125 of the Adorned Podcast our friend and special guest, Courtney Reissig joins in our conversation on the story of scripture to discuss the Wisdom Literature.  In the middle of the Old Testament are the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. These books, written by people such as David and Solomon have been labeled as “wisdom literature” and are included in the story of scripture to remind us that God not only cares about our minds and our actions, but our hearts as well. They help us understand that the people in God’s story are very similar to us in the way they feel and express their emotions while going through the ups and downs of life. Wisdom literature gives us language to use in times of joy, sorrow, weariness, thanksgiving, and more. These books, much like the rest of Scripture, help us to reflect on the faithfulness of God in the past, present, and future!

Be sure to check out Courtney’s book on the Psalms, Teach Me To Feel.

Quotes:

“Unlike the narrative parts of the Bible, the Psalms speak into a static time in Israel’s history. The narrative of God‘s work among his people is not advanced in the psalms. Instead we get a behind the scenes look at the mental processes and emotions of real people in that story” -Courtney Reissig

“The Psalms help us see that real humans lived through these narratives.” -Courtney Reissig

“The Psalms help us engage with God with both our hearts and our minds.” - Courntey Reissig

“Jesus is the perfect embodiment of Wisdom.” - Courtney Reissig

Ep. 124 - God Proclaims a True and Everlasting King is Coming - Kings and Prophets

Ep. 124 - God Proclaims a True and Everlasting King is Coming - Kings and Prophets

On episode 124 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss the kings and prophets and how God proclaims that a true and everlasting king is coming. The book of Ruth ends with showing us the next 3 generations: Obed, Jesse and David, but we pick up in 1 Samuel with Eli who trains up Samuel as a judge. As Samuel ages, the Israelites demand a king so they can be like “all the nations.” God tells Samuel to give them a king, but to warn them. God shows Samuel that Saul is to be the first king. Even though he was chosen by God, Saul is not a faithful leader. He becomes proud and disobedient, therefore God rejects him as king. When God chooses David, the son of Jesse to be the next king God reminds his people that it’s not outward appearance, but the heart that matters to Him. David trusts the Lord and defeats Goliath, but Saul is envious of David and tries to kill him (this is when many of the psalms are written). God makes a covenant with David and he is a good king, but also often chooses his own ways and sins. His son Solomon, is also a good king and even builds the temple, but he also chooses his own ways. These kings show us that we need a true and better king. During the reign of these as well as future kings, God sends prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah to remind the people to turn from their sin and trust that a true and better king is coming. God is faithful and will keep his promises!

Quotes:

“The Bible, despite being written by multiple authors and addressing various subjects, is one grand story whose central message is about what our triune Creator-covenant God planned in eternity, executed in time, to glorify himself by the redemption of his people, the judgment of sin, and making all things new in Christ Jesus.” -Stephen Wellum

“The Davidic covenant thus identifies more precisely the promised “seed” who will mediate international blessing: he will be a royal descendant of Abraham through David.” -Paul R. Williamson

“God is reminding them that He is going to provide the true and better King.”

“God invites us in to be a part of His story. I’m not the main character. I’m not supposed to be the main character, but I am invited in.”

Ep. 123 - God Continues to be Faithful Even When His People Are Not - Judges and Ruth

Ep. 123 - God Continues to be Faithful Even When His People Are Not - Judges and Ruth

On episode 123 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss the Books of Judges and Ruth; how God is faithful even when His people are not. After Joshua’s death, the people of Israel turn from The Lord and begin to worship idols. During this time God raises up judges to govern over the land and to deliver Israel from its enemies. Some of these judges, such as Deborah and Gideon are great leaders, while others are not. During this time, there is a cycle of God blessing his people, the prosperity of God’s people, the rebellion of God’s people, God’s wrath against his people, the repentance of God’s people, God offering his people forgiveness, and God blessing his people once again. The book of Ruth zooms in on one specific family living during the time of the judges, Naomi and her daughter in law, Ruth. When Boaz agrees to marry Ruth and redeem her family, the author (through the empowering of the Holy Spirit) is pointing us to our true redeemer, Jesus Christ!

Quotes:

“Judges tells a story of spiral down into rebellion and disaster at every level in the nation of Israel” -Craig Bartholomew

“Throughout history, God has promised blessings and cursings, prosperity and calamity. The consistent thing, however, is that either way, God is glorified. Whether the people choose to obey or foolishly fall into sin, His holiness remains perfectly intact. His sovereignty is never threatened. Either way, God wins… although for His people, it is always less painful for Him to be glorified because they are obedient.” -What’s in The Bible

“God is saying “there are always glimpses of my grace.””

Ep. 121 - God Calls a Family - The Patriarchs

On episode 121 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when a shift happens in the story of Scripture and we zoom in on one man and his family. Abram. When God calls Abram to leave his home to go to a land that he would show him... he does! God makes a covenant with Abraham and he is obedient a lot but there are also times when he chooses his own ways instead of God’s. We see this when Abraham has a son named Ishmael with his wife’s servant, Hagar. Later, God graciously gives him and his wife, Sarah a son named Isaac. God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. He is obedient, but God ultimately provides a ram for the sacrifice in Isaac’s place. Isaac marries Rebekah and they have twins named Jacob and Esau. Jacob means deceiver and he lives up to his name. One night, Jacob wrestles with God and his name is changed to Israel. Jacob has 12 sons (which are the 12 tribes of Israel), his favorite of which is Joseph. After Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery, he has a lot of ups and downs in his life, but God gives him the gift of interpreting dreams and pharaoh makes him second in command over Egypt. Joseph’s brothers come to him asking for food because of famine in the land (they don’t know it’s Joseph) and he forgives them and takes care of them. The Israelites lived in Egypt and became slaves to the Egyptians.

Quotes:

In reference to the Abrahamic covenant...“It is a promise in which God obligates himself to his people. Entering into creation through an oath to his people.” -J.T. English

“No matter what you’re facing, no matter how hard it is, God is using it for your good.”

Ep. 120 - God's People Rebel - The Fall

Ep. 120 - God's People Rebel - The Fall

On episode 120 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss when God’s people rebel. Satan, in the form of a serpent, twists God’s words and makes Eve doubt God’s goodness.  Eve sees the fruit, desires it, and eats it. She chooses her own way instead of God’s way. (This is going to be a theme we see throughout this story) Adam then joins in this sin with Eve.Adam and Eve choose to rival God instead of choosing to be his representatives. Once they sin we immediately see the faithfulness, mercy, and holiness of God. God meets them in their shame and provides the covering for their shame (mercy and faithfulness), but they then have to leave the garden (holiness). God puts a curse on the serpent and we see the first glimpse of the gospel when God says “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Adam and Eve have children and the pattern of sin continues. Adam and Eve’s son, Cain kills his brother Abel. People continue to sin more and more until God is so heartbroken (Is that fair?) That he floods the earth, sparing Noah, his family and a ton of animals. Even after the flood, sin continues to wreak havoc and people continue to choose their ways instead of God’s. They decide to try and make a name for themselves by building the tower of Babel.

Quotes:

“With one bite they traded the freedom of enjoying what is good for slavery to what is evil.” -Nancy Guthrie

“The fruit of one tree brought death but the fruit of another gives life.” -Nancy Guthrie

“Isn’t it fascinating to see how different languages are a result of our sin, and yet God takes even the effects of our sin and transforms them into something that will give Him praise? At the end of time, God is not going to obliterate all languages. Now He sees the diversity of languages as part of the beauty of His creation. Every tongue, tribe, and nation will praise God. The different languages won’t go away. They’ll all be in service to praising King Jesus. It’s amazing to consider how God will transform even the effects of our sin and somehow put them in service to praising King Jesus!” -Trevin Wax

“This is not the end. Jesus is coming to redeem all of this.”

For Advent in 2019 we walked through the metanarrative of scripture; creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. We decided to re-air this series this year to go long with our new Biblical Theology Advent Cards! These cards were created to guide families through the story of scripture focusing on God the Son and His role from creation all the way to restoration.⁣

We don’t often think of the end times when we are celebrating Christmas, but the return of Jesus and the restoration of all creation is an important part of the work of Christ. On episode 84 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss how looking to what the Bible tells us is in store for the future helps us more deeply celebrate the birth of Christ. What a glorious day it will be when Jesus returns!

Quotes:

“As His first advent secured our redemption, so His second advent is the blessed hope of the church for the full consummation of His Kingdom” -RC Sproul

“Glorification is the final step in the application of redemption. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead bodies of all believers for all time who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like his own.” -Systematic Theology

“Believers will enter unto the full enjoyment of life in the presence of God forever.” -Systematic Theology

“Yes, Jesus was born as a little baby and He came to die on the cross, but that’s not where this story ends. The story ends with full restoration of everything."

On episode 83 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss the part of the metanarrative of scripture that we tend to focus on the most at Christmas, redemption. Why was it necessary for the Son of God to wrap himself in flesh in order to fully redeem us? How does meditating on the redeeming work of Christ change the way we view the holiday season? We would love for you to join us as we continue to prepare our hearts and minds as we draw nearer to Christmas Day.

Quotes:

“We are still living with the effects of the fall, but those of us that are in Christ have His imputed righteousness.”

“We can move away from the darkness because Jesus is the light of the world!”

“Redemption is the reason that Jesus had to be born as a baby, so it is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas.”

“The more familiar I am with the whole story of scripture, the better I know God, and the deeper my love for him is.”

“Everything we do at Christmas should flow from the fact that Jesus coming as a baby is the gift.”

Sin might be the last thing we want to think about at Christmastime, but the fall of man is the whole reason Jesus had to come to earth and be born as a human. On episode 82 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss how understanding our depravity and our need for a savior makes the gift of Christmas that much sweeter!

“Heresy is destructive, not just for your mind, but for your life.” -J.T. English

“Christmas is not God's second plan. Before he created the world, God determined to save sinners through the blood of his own Son. The grand narrative of the Bible points to this essential truth -- God determined to bring glory to himself through the salvation of a people redeemed and purchased by his own Son, the Christ. Bethlehem and Calvary were essential parts of God's plan from the beginning, before the cosmos was brought into being as the Son obeyed the will of the Father in creation.” -Al Mohler

On episode 107 of the Adorned Podcast we discuss faith and works as addressed James 2:14-26. This specific passage can be confusing and is sometimes misinterpreted. Is James saying that it is our works that save us? Is he contradicting what Paul says in other parts of scripture? Join us as we dive into these questions and more!

Quotes:

“It is therefore faith alone which justifies, and yet the faith which justifies is not alone.” -John Calvin

“A tree has been planted out into the ground. Now the source of life to that tree is at the root, whether it has apples on it or not; the apples would not give it life, but the whole of the life of the tree will come from its root. But if that tree stands in the orchard, and when the springtime comes there is no bud, and when the summer comes there is no leafing, and no fruit-bearing, but the next year, and the next, it stands there without bud or blossom, or leaf or fruit, you would say it is dead, and you are correct; it is dead. It is not that the leaves could have made it live, but that the absence of the leaves is a proof that it is dead. So, too, is it with the professor (of the faith). If he has life, that life must give fruits; if not fruits, works; if his faith has a root, but if there be no works, then it would be correct to depend upon the inference that he is spiritually dead.” -Charles Spurgeon

“True faith accepts Christ as both Savior and Lord.” R.C. Sproul

“If he had true faith it would be impossible that he would be barren of good works because true faith always and everywhere immediately begins to manifest itself in obedience.” -R.C. Sproul

“The works that faith creates is a love for God that leads to a love for others that isn’t perfectly executed, but present.” - Matt Chandler

Ep. 68 (re-air) - Our Gifts, His Glory - Interview with Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler from Risen Motherhood

*This episode originally aired on August 9, 2019*

On episode 68 of the Adorned Podcast we continue our series, “Our Gifts, His Glory.” We had the privilege of talking with Emily and Laura from “Risen Motherhood” about what it looks like to use the gift of motherhood for God’s glory. If you are not familiar with the Risen Motherhood ministry, they exist to encourage, equip, and challenge moms to apply the gospel to their everyday lives. On this episode, we discuss everything from Emily’s amazing fire building skills to how potty training and mountains of laundry will continually point you back to the gospel. Even if you are not in the throws of motherhood, we believe you will find encouragement through this conversation!

Quotes:

“Everything we have is The Lord’s.  It’s all been given by Him; all of our gifts, every skill set, our personality traits, our tendencies. God gives those to His people and if we truly are not our own but we belong to God then every resource, every gift we have, is actually His!” -Laura Wifler

“The neat thing about the gospel is that it makes us new and it changes everything about who we are.” -Emily Jensen

“God is the one, in Christ who reconciles our responsibility with our inability.” -Emily Jensen

“The great news of what God did for us is that He came and He said “I know that you’re not enough, but I’m going to send my son to be enough on your behalf and now before the throne of God, you are made good, you are made righteous, I see you and I see righteousness, I see patience, and kindness, and long suffering because I see Jesus.  He covers us in front of God,”” -Laura Wifler

“He is for my good and He is for their good, and I can trust Him.” -Emily Jensen

“We are not above Christ and what He has done.  He came to serve, he came to lay down His life, he came to deal with the dirty, stinky, messy, annoying needs that we all have.” -Emily Jensen

“As moms, so much of what we do is unseen, but it does matter and God is refining and molding, and growing us in these days. He’s preparing us for whatever good works He has down the road.  These days are not being wasted.” -Laura Wifler

Ep. 06 (re-air) - Theology - Why It's Important

*This episode was originally aired on April 18, 2018*
On this episode of the Adorned Podcast we discuss why theology matters and why what you believe about God is so important. We also address the impact that poor doctrine can have on those around them.

Quotes:
“What you believe about god is the most important thing about you” -AW Tozer
“The more we know about god, about his word, about his relationships to the world and mankind, the better we will trust him, the more fully we will praise him, and the more readily we will obey” - Wayne Grudem
“Belief affects behavior, and so ideas have consequences. A person who believes railroad crossing signal is stuck when in truth a train is coming may soon be dead. Likewise false doctrine will lead to false deeds.” Norman Geisler
“When I think about our goal as believers I think about the great commission that says “go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations.” This is the big picture. This is what we need to remain focused on as believers and as disciple of Jesus.”
