AfriWetu: S5Ep3 - Dihya Al Kahina (Legend)

AFRI-WATU! SBAH LKHIR!

How excited are we to introduce you to this Legend from the North! She is epic and of course we needed an epic voice to narrate the story, so tune in to hear the dulcet tones of Nyaguthii who so graciously agreed to tell this tale.

I urge you all to uncover more about this legend as we wind up the AfriWetu celebration of women this International Women's month! She was a queen, a warrior, a mother and force - Dihya Al Kahina was a legend who inspires many women across not just North Africa but the rest of the continent.

As usual I want to thank Lee Kanyottu for doing his magic and making us both sound so good!

Until next time

AfriWetu S3E3 - Yaa Asantewaa (Legends)

Welcome Back Afri-WATU!

It's the very FIRST Legend of Season 3! And honestly....it had to be Yea Ashantewaa, the phenomenal woman of the Ashanti Empire - as we celebrate International Women's Day / Month and the theme is Break The Bias.....and Yea was truly a woman who did exactly that, again we say....Legend.

We have the distinct pleasure of hosting Angie Gachui as our Guest Narrator! Only she could have rocked Yaa's story this well, and we are soooooo grateful to her lending her soulful voice to AfriWetu yet again. Asante Angie!

As always, huge THANKS to Lee Kanyottu for delivering as always and making us sound good!

Until next time,

Mubarikiwe!

AfriWetu S2E20 - Queen Makeda of Sheba (Legends)

AfriWetu S2E20 - Queen Makeda of Sheba (Legends)

Welcome back AfriWATU!

It's the penultimate episode, S2 Ep20! And what better way to close out the storytelling than welcoming the famous Legend, the one and only Queen Makeda of Sheba.

Queen Makeda's story resonates across many different civilisations, she is found in African, Arabic and Jewish texts as a legend. But the roots are here on our African continent. Books, poems, paintings, movies and many other art forms celebrate this legend, so she had to be a part of the AfriWetu Legend series because this is an African story that has captured the globe.

I am sooooo excited to invite to the mic, our special Guest Narrator, my sister Noni! Who did a great job. And as always, huge THANKS to Lee Kanyottu for delivering as always and making us sound good!

Until next time,

Mubarikiwe!

AfriWetu S2E18 - Axum Empire Pt2 (Civilisations)

AfriWetu S2E18 - Axum Empire Pt2 (Civilisations)

Afri-WATU! It is the final part of the Awesome AXUM Empire!

Now good news / bad news...this is a real deep academic dive into this Empire, and I promise you will get lost from time to time, but dont worry it is sooooo worth it to get into this study of the Axum...thats the good news..

The bad news, this is the last civilisation of this series and there are only two more AfriWetu episodes before we close out the stories :(

Savour every minute with us in this magical space, going back in time to meet the ancestors. Learn about the great conquests and some facts that will astound you and hopefully challenge you to dig deeper. My African fam from this region...give us a shout on our interwebs @AfriWetu with the proper pronounciations (because this host messed some up) and more fun facts about the Empire.

As usual HUGE thanks to the best podcast producer Lee Kanyottu of Big City Studios for doing a great job in making this academic episode run smoothly just for you listeners. AfriWetu S2E17 - Axum Empire Pt1 (Civilisations)

AfriWetu S2E17 - Axum Empire Pt1 (Civilisations)

Welcome back Afri-WATU to Part 1 of the Axum Empire!

This was such a great civilisation to study, there is literally reams of information out there abbout it. It is also one where AfriWetu does refer to non-African states that Axum had contact with, but as usual the core is our African story.

Afri-WATU this one you will have to listen to a few times, because it has A LOT of academic information so pay attention! There may be a test later! Ok kidding. As usual please forgive my mispronounciation of any words, share the correct ones using the Anchor voice message, send a voice note to our socials or email us!

As always a huge ASANTE to Lee Kanyottu who DELIVERED as always on the production & makes me sound good…(All spoken word mistakes are mine & mine alone!) AfriWetu S2E16 - Sunni Ali (Legends)

Hello Listeners! It’s S2 Episode 16!

Thank you & Weclome Back!

Today we meet Suni Ali of the Songhai Empire a mighty military man whose story could only be told by our Guest Narrator Njora!

Njora is a good friend of AfriWetu and it is always always such a joy to have him wax lyrical on the pod. Here he does true justice to the great Sunni Ali who set the foundation of what was one of the largest and powerful Empires in the world. One that spanned eight modern day nations, so not a small feat.

Tune in and remember to follow Njora on his social media handles - Twitter and IG @elsaphan_njora.
