We get a Patz confession, but with a closer look, we see that it was coerced by Billy Barber's old friend Father O'Leary. His name makes so much sense now! As far as everyone else knows the confession was real and Jacob is innocent. But once Andy finds out the truth not even a trip to Mexico with a new carefree Laurie in a bikini can lighten his mood. He eventually tells her what he knows when they find themselves being questioned my Mexican authorities in relation to Jacob and missing friend, Hope. Jacob is cleared with that investigation once Hope is found but things have been irreparably damaged. Shockingly, while trying to get "the truth' from Jacob in the way to the barber, she declares she can't take it anymore and crashes the car with both of them in it.

Jacob's trial for the murder of Ben Rifkin begins and is surprisingly off to a good start. The trial takes an unexpected turn when testimony from Derek Yu (Jacob's classmate) reveals a story authored by Jacob posted to the site The Cut Up Room. The story details the murder of the character Brent by the bullied and fed up Jason. This story is eerily similar to the details of Ben's murder and sends waves of shock and doubt of Jacob's innocence through the courtroom. The mystery man in the blue Lincoln is identified as ex-gang member James O' Leary, aka Father O' Leary, but his connection to the Barber family is still unknown. With a missing Matt McGrath, Jacob's defense team decides to subpoena and call Patz as a hostile witness. Faced with the painful certainty or being back in court, a distraught Patz writes a tearful letter to Mr. and Mrs. Rifkin confessing to and apologizing for the murder of Ben.

We are just days before the trial and Laurie is losing faith and Andrew is losing his temper. From screaming at Jacob, nearly beating up Neal to crashing his cars into Leonard’s Patz’s car at a stop sign, Andrew is a live wire.

He’s at his wits end because even though Matt has implicated Patz to the police, a search of his home finds nothing. Likewise a search of Ben’s phone after hours of digging, paints the picture of a happy kid with a loving family.

The evaluation is complete and shows that Jacob has some anti social and violent tendencies. Probably most disconcerting is his lack of empathy and his grey moral reasoning. Andre continues to ignore any signs that his son may be troubled as Laurie becomes even more convinced that something just isn’t right with their son.

In this episode of Defending Jacob, things comes to a head as Andy finally has a face to face with his father. Laurie after finding a safe space in life comes crashing down with a confrontation at the grocery with Ben’s mother. Sarah tells Andy a fraction of what’s going on with the entire case, which leads to a ruined relationship between her and Jacob. Andy and Jacob have bonding time at the lake, and someone is deciding whether the truth will actually set them free. All that and more on Defending Jacob.

Jacob is interviewed by his defense attorney, but inconsistencies have left his attorney and family doubtful. Andy takes matters into his own hands and starts a private investigation into Leonard Patz. Andy's investigation leads him to the home of Matthew McGrath, Patz's alleged victim, to try to get some answers. Jeanine, a writer from the Globe, uses questionable tactics to get the scoop from Laurie. Jacob finds support in Sarah. Andy's dad requests a reunion with Andy.

Assistant D.A, Andy Barber is assigned to solving a mysterious murder of a kid that is in the same class as his son. Things take quite the turn though as his son is immediately thrusted into the case a murder suspect and he is taken off from the case. With things becoming more and more uncertain, Andy Barber admits to his family that his family that his father who was presumed to have a died a long time ago, is actually in jail for murder. With the pre trial causing some distress for the family, tensions only rise from here as public opinion, hate and mistrust come bearing down on the family.
