Rafiq is a gay man living in Iran. He is subjected to abuse from his father because of his sexual identity. Being gay is breaking the law in his country, so he flees to Damascus. He meets friends and starts to build a community but because of fear and more Violene, has to flee again. He finds himself in Jordan with a dream of going to America thanks to advice from a friend.

Faraz is an Iranian immigrant with an irrepressible spirit. He provides well for his family, but dreams of giving them a giant, luxurious home they can call their own. He ends up buying a plot of land that covered in a rock that refuses to move. At the same time his college age son longs to move out as he eschews the Iranian tradition of living at home until marriage.

Ai wins an Alaskan cruise for he and her two teenagers. Although she has a great relationship with their kids, as they get older she feels them pulling away. They exert their independence on the cruise and she's left alone. Ai stuggles with her own identity as she lets her children develop their own. In the end she finds an activity that suits her and is comfortable without them.

Beatrice is the hop and dream in her Ugandan village. Her father is baker who has worked hard to give her the opportunity to go to America to study. Years later we find her in America after her divorce as a single mother struggling to make ends meet. She has an amazing support system in her roommates who encourage her and don't mind her living with them though she's behind on rent. Although her mother is disappointed at her lack of progress, she never gets discourages and will wow us with her talent and inventiveness.

Iwegbuna has always had an affinity for cowboys, even as a kid in his native Nigeria. When he goes to Oklahoma for college he is a bit of an outsider and comes off as aggressive and overbearing to his classmates and professor. Even in his class to improve his accent and English speaking he is shunned by fellow immigrants. He finds his footing in an odd place but through it is able tp gain the confidence he seeks.
