Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 30: Kelley Ranly

Kelley Ranly serves as an Extension Program Specialist for Texas 4-H and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension where she is responsible for coordinating and organizing statewide agricultural leadership programs for high-school-aged youth across Texas. In this role, she also oversees Texas 4-H Horse Validation and is on the leadership team for the Texas State 4-H Horse Show. Kelley began working for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Texas 4-H while she was a student at Texas A&M. She worked in Texas Steer and Heifer Validation for two years before moving into the role of assisting with youth leadership programs. She continued to work in this capacity for about three years before moving into her current position. Kelley recognized her love for agriculture and the western way of life at a very young age. She grew up showing livestock and rodeoing, but really found her niche in the horse world while attending college at Texas A&M University. Kelley obtained a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a minor in Business Administration at Texas A&M University before going on to complete her Master of Agribusiness, also at Texas A&M. While completing her degrees, Kelley was a member of the Texas A&M Ranch Horse Team for four years, which uncovered her deep love for reined cow horses. In her spare time, Kelley also enjoys working with livestock and hay producers to maximize profitability on their pastures, serving at her church, and watching Aggie sports. Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 24: Macey Hurst

Macey Hurst was born and raised on a cow/calf operation in Mid Missouri where she quickly found her love for the beef industry and community. She went to school to study agricultural communications and agribusiness so she could better tell the story of the industry and promote it. After an unfortunate family situation ended ranching as they knew it, Macey, her mom and sister started Lady Livestock Company - a registered Black Angus herd - through which they share the beef story and encourage women in agriculture. In addition to her passion for cattle, she spends her days selling print, working alongside many ag publications and businesses, advocating for the industry through speaking engagements and social media, as well as traveling and soaking up as much time with loved ones as possible. Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 16: Shelby Lovelace

My name is Shelby Lovelace, I am the owner of @thegoodbabesco & @shopbbtlabel I started out of college with just $2,000 and a dream of delivering affordable yet quality pieces, that give women confidence. I originally started with home decor, painting canvas’s and bull skulls to pay rent in college, I saved up my extra money and slowly started buying into clothes. — I worked in corporate for Dell Computers for 4 years but quickly realized but quickly realized that was not the industry for me and I needed to find something I was passionate about, to not only make a difference in my life, but others also. — My ultimate goal is to give others confidence through clothes, at an affordable price. — The name The Good Babes Co spoke to my heart, with a true meaning; in this time more than ever, we feel the need to spread kindness and positivity at every opportunity that presents itself. Instead of praising celebrities, let’s praise non-profits, telling a random stranger that you LOVE their outfit, skipping Starbucks to donate money to those who are in need, or even just giving a helping hand to someone at the grocery store. I am beyond thankful, first off if you’ve read this far second, for being apart of the Good Babes Club. Let’s all strive to be Good Babes XOXO - Shelby

Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 10: Teresa Johnson

Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 10: Teresa Johnson

I’m Teresa Johnson from Krum, Tx. At the age of 50, I took my first ever girls trip in 2019 and needed a safe way to carry and travel with my inherited turquoise jewelry. Starting with a vintage train case, I added some western flair, revamping it into a travel jewelry case. Several ladies on the trip asked me to revamp their grandmas‘ train case with my unique vintage western style. VCC was born.
I’ve been a nurse 33 years and with the Covid pandemic in 2020 I began travel nursing and recognized a need for travel accessories, especially for my cherished squash blossom necklace. Sitting in an airport I designed a squash blossom case to secure and protect my necklace, eventually filing for a patent. I have continued to design and develop western style jewelry cases, travel accessories, and luggage and am so thrilled to now devote my full time to my business with hopes to get my cases into boutiques/stores nationwide.

Ag Chicks | S4 Episode 2: Alli Fender

Allison (Alli) Fender grew up in the gorgeous San Diego backcountry on a small Dairy and Beef operation.

She attended San Diego Mesa College and played soccer on the women’s team while attending the Animal Health program offered there. In 2014, she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Animal Health Technology and became licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician. She worked in several small animal hospitals in the area.

A month after graduation in 2014, she and her high school sweetheart were married on Mesa Chiquita Ranch, where she grew up. Her dad gifted her and her husband, Bryce, ten bred heifers, which was the start of their beef herd. Flying F Ranch was established in 2020 after Bryce and Alli created the brand and business selling beef directly to San Diego consumers. Their motto is “We Give a Flying F About BEEF.” In 2021, they added Registered Black Angus cattle into their herd to improve carcass quality. The couple learned more about genetics and began breeding more mindfully, propelling their beef business to a higher level.

Bryce and Alli raise their two sons, Warren and Wells, on the ranch together. They believe raising the next generation beside them will teach the young boys valuable life lessons and memories. Alli is an active member and Vice President of the San Diego CowBelles and helps with local Ag in the Classroom lessons, Beef Promotion, and Advocacy for our industry. In her spare time, she breeds and shows Australian Shepherds, participates in CrossFit, helps with school activities for her sons, is a dog leader for the Julian/Santa Ysabel 4H, started podcasting, and manages the business of Flying F Ranch.

Ag Chicks | S3 Episode 14: Caroline Arendt

More about Caroline: As a storyteller by nature, I really hit my stride by creating content about my passion: the western industry. So much so, I left agency life behind and launched my own digital marketing business in 2019 and haven’t looked back. While no two days look the same, you can expect to find me writing, captioning and hashtagging through the workday, sometimes from the back of a cowpony. When I’m not working, I’m bothering my husband, Matt, riding horses or fan-girling over my corgi, Pokey.

Ag Chicks | S3 Episode 13: Pretty & Gritty - Jenna, Natalie, Stef, Cass, & Kirsten

Ag Chicks | S3 Episode 13: Pretty & Gritty - Jenna, Natalie, Stef, Cass, & Kirsten

More about today's guests:

We are Cassandra and Stefanie Lepp, 2 sisters who run our family farm in Manitoba with our dad. We also keep him in line at his aerial spray business and do everything there but fly. Ground crew life is one of our favourite times of the year! I finished my business degree in 2010 and Stefanie got her interactive media arts diploma and modelled after high school. But both of us were drawn back the farm and what this lifestyle provides. We share our life on @thetulepps because representation matters and the world needs to know we do in fact look like farmers.

Natalie Kovarik is the co-host of the popular podcast Discover Ag as well as the co-founder of Elevate Ag - an online course and community providing producers with the tools they need to successfully advocate and share online. She and her husband live in Central Nebraska where they own and operate Kovarik Cattle Co, a cow calf operation with a growing registered herd. For the past 2 years Natalie has been sharing her ranching and familying story online to showcase the beauty behind the western lifestyle as well as foster a community who supports and trusts in Agriculture as much as she does.

Singer-songwriter Jenna Paulette — a cowgirl who came of age amid the gritty realities of ranch life — is part of Nashville’s growing wave of female artists who are rewriting the rules and charting their own paths. Her finely calibrated blend of toughness and sensitivity is on full display in tracks like ”Country in the Girl” and “Pretty Ugly”, while current single “Slow Drawl” unleashes the sass and storytelling gleaned from those who precede her: The Chicks, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgraves.

Kirsten is a first generation rancHer living on and managing a ranch with her husband in Montana. You can find Kirsten on Instagram as @hashtagranchlife where she shares her journey into ranching, love of western fashion and all things ranch life! When she isn’t riding horses or chasing cattle, Kirsten can be found drinking coffee, taking care of her chickens and watching Heartland!

Ag Chicks | S3 Episode 8: Ashley Binger

I’m a 5th generation farmer & rancher born and raised in small town South Dakota. Working side by side with my dad and brother in law every day on our family farm. I have my bachelors degree from South Dakota State University (Go Jacks!) in hospitality management as I wanted to be a wedding planner. Never planned to come back to the family farm but so glad this is the path I’m on.

I started sharing the funny side of running cattle and farming with your family on Instagram and grew my following pretty quick. Now I get to share my everyday life with people all over the world, educating on how and where their food is made and being a voice for agriculture. Truly living the best life.

About Kenzie:

BONAFIDE COWBOY BIO: Hey there, I'm Kenzie and I am your guide to Brand Photography. Whether your business is new to the western industry or has been there since the good ole days... BonaFide Cowboy is the name you need to remember when it comes to launching your newest products.  I built the BonaFide Cowboy brand with authenticity at the forefront of everything we do and create, by uniquely catering each shoot to each brand and authentically showcasing their products in action or in the environment that your customers dream of. Showcase your products in the hands of your consumers, covered in arena dirt, lost in a wild west scene or carried on the backs of your consumers. From brand photography to helping other photographers, our goal is to be "bonafide cowboy" in everything we do.

KENZIE BIO: Born & raised in Steamboat Springs, CO, I found a love for the agricultural lifestyle at a young age through the help of 4-H. I did not come from an ag-family but my parents were very supportive and helped me learn more about horses and the market lambs I raised through 4-H and by helping me build connections with ag-industry professionals. In middle school, I started interning with a local cowhorse trainer and over the years worked my way up to a ranch hand and eventually an assistant trainer. I attended the University of Wyoming where I graduated with a BS in Agricultural Communications with minors in Public Relations and Farm & Ranch Management. Throughout college, I continued to train and show horses, was an ambassador for the College of Ag & Natural Resources, and interned with UW Marketing & the National Western Stock Show. While still in college, I started learning graphic/web design/photography and began a side hustle to help pay the bills. Post-college, I spent a summer living in Weatherford, TX before moving to Billings, MT to work for the NILE Stock Show & Rodeo as the Equine Programs & Communications Director. Although I enjoyed my time in the "corporate" world, I ultimately decided that I wasn't happy in my job and wanted to pursue my own business that I had been continually building on the side. So at the end of 2019, I quit my job and began bartending a few nights a week while I worked on building my own business during the day. As we all know, in early 2020 the COVID-19 Pandemic struck and I was temporarily out of a bartending gig. I had little friends and no family in Billings and decided that I wanted to move closer to my family (and now fiancé) who were all living in CO, so I packed up and moved back to Laramie, WY so I could be closer to them. I continued to bartend, train/sell horses, help my clients with graphic/web design, and I continued to build my photography skills so that by the time 2021 rolled around, I was ready to take my photography business further. After a free online course on pricing, I decided I wasn't charging enough and raised my prices and it was the best thing I could have done. 2021 was a great year for my photography business and I grew immensely. Today, I have niched down to focus on brand photography and helping other photographers gain confidence and build their own businesses. I'm always learning & growing and I know that I'm not done yet.

More about Jenna: Some things never go out of style: taking pride in a job well done, building upon your family legacy, remaining steadfast in faith and honoring the past while making room for the future.  Singer-songwriter Jenna Paulette understands all of this and reflects it in her music — a cowgirl who came of age amid the gritty realities of ranch life, introduced to the time-tested genre of Country music as young as she can remember.   The true-to-her-roots hat act is part of Nashville’s growing wave of female artists who are rewriting the rules and charting their own paths. "Ranching alongside my granddad and uncle taught me to rise to the occasion, they always expected me to be able to get the job done,” Paulette says. “In a lot of ways that prepared me to move to Nashville and pursue music where I now expect myself to be able to get the job done regardless, no matter the limitations.”  Her finely calibrated blend of toughness and sensitivity is on full display in tracks like “Country In The Girl” and “Pretty Ugly,” which wraps a gorgeous melody around lyrics reflecting the realization of a relationship gone cold, while current single “Bless Her Heart” unleashes the sass and storytelling that Paulette gleaned from those who precede her: The Chicks, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves.   She comes by the grit honestly: the Lewisville, Texas native grew up moving cattle on her family’s ranch in Thackerville, Okla. Paulette found her expressive, crystalline voice singing in church or during long, hot summers spent roaming the ranch’s vast expanses. “I cannot remember a time that we didn’t have country music playing in the kitchen when my mom was cooking dinner,” Paulette says. “My most vivid memories of knowing I wanted to make country music for a living was out moving cattle with my granddad. He had a George Strait Greatest Hits CD in his truck, and those were the songs I sang on the back of a steaming hot four-wheeler.”  Paulette earned a marketing degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and ultimately settled in Nashville, where she struck up a mentorship with Ashley Gorley, a veteran songwriter with 50+ No. 1 tunes under his belt.   After collaborating with songwriters like Will Bundy, Heather Morgan and Parker Welling, as well as opening for Mason Ramsey on his 2019 national tour, Parmalee, John Michael Montgomery and Aaron Watson this year, the savvy performer found herself playing to fans via TikTok, Pinterest and Instagram to continue growing her fan base, ultimately signing a publishing deal with Brad Paisley’s Sea Gayle Music earlier this year.  As Paulette’s star continues to rise ever higher, she hasn’t forgotten what really matters. She understands that what will cement her as one of Nashville’s most exciting artists is something as true now as it was in Music City’s earliest days. “When people listen to my songs, I want them to feel grounded,” Paulette says. “I want them to feel connected to their roots and to the way of life that I represent and love, because I think that way of life is just such a beautiful picture of how it can be.”
