agitated. S1 Ep11. - All Data To The People with Kat Dodds

agitated. S1 Ep11. - All Data To The People with Kat Dodds

In this episode we’re joined by Kat Dodds who shares one of the latest performative pieces by neoliberal daddy Justin Trudeau. Couldn't even finish the gig.

Check out The Corporation, and now The New Corporation -- the unfortunately necessary sequel.

Why are Kat and her colleagues suing Twitter and the Canadian government? As we like to do, we talk about the need to democratize social media, and we think about the opportunity to build power in the Movement through these tools (and new ones). How can we make it so that every person who wants to change the world can do so, and not just be a “clicker” behind a screen?

And we know you’ve missed it -- Shelly is back with the Twitter roundup to talk about the feminist author to TERF pipeline. And just FYI - we can’t believe we have to say it but no one is saying you’re not allowed to say “woman”.

agitated. S1. Bonus 2 - Total Recall Recall

agitated. S1. Bonus 2 - Total Recall Recall

We spill the tea about the California recall. How we felt, what we did, and the powers that be (or don’t be).

We talk about Gavin Newsom’s shit policy, particularly his lackluster offering to the many (English speaking) Californians who are houseless. We offer a quick 101 on the NIMBY/YIMBY situation and faux revolutionary housing “solutions” propping up the owning class. Bleh.

We discuss why it sucks so bad that Newsom won by a landslide - this is why we can’t have nice things (healthcare for all). And of course, we tell a quick story about THE DRESS ;)

-- actually no not that one, we don’t care.

agitated. S1 Ep3. - We Want Ramen & Roses Too! with Daniel Lee

agitated. S1 Ep3. - We Want Ramen & Roses Too! with Daniel Lee

We interview friend of the show Dr. Daniel Wayne Lee, longtime organizer, people’s politician, and activist and now vice mayor of Culver City, CA, on the merits and challenges to the inside/outside approach to systemic change. We talk about direct action and civil disobedience -- what distinguishes them from one another and why both are necessary. And of course, we learn what radicalized Daniel to choose this life of fighting tirelessly for racial, economic and environmental justice.

What’s agitating us? We vent about the political + corporate corruption happening in the ranks of the European Union/World Trade Organization that will likely prevent the release of COVID-19 related patents, which would allow all nations to develop their own vaccines and therapies. We also go deep on the new Texas abortion laws, and what makes them even more barbaric than previous “heartbeat bills” we’ve seen -- and we discuss some of our own personal experiences navigating the reproductive healthcare system.

And another Twitter Roundup of Zionist hijinks, brought to you by Shelly.

Hosted by Milly Harmon, Shelly Williams, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, and Jessica Munger. A Democracy Unlimited Media Collaborative production. Special thanks to Jason Bayless and A Radical Guide for production support and Alfonso Saldaña for support on graphics.

agitated. S1. Bonus 1 - Free Palestine

agitated. S1. Bonus 1 - Free Palestine

In our very first Bonus Episode, agitated’s resident anti-Zionist Jew Milly Harmon frames out our discussion on Israel’s ongoing genocidal campaign against millions of Palestinians -- which is currently ramping up at a horrific clip, and with full-throated backing of the Biden administration. We discuss the history of the region, the Zionist propaganda in our media that has manufactured consent for these crimes against humanity, and the role that the the UK and US governments -- and their own geopolitical interests -- have played in the creation, maintenance and highly sophisticated militarization of this illegitimate settler-colonial ethnostate.

We also talk about the rapid shifts in our culture that we’ve witnessed over these past few weeks. More and more everyday people (including many American Jews) are waking up to the realities of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and the deeply disproportionate power dynamics in the region. This is thanks in large part to the accessibility of information and footage on social media, and orgs/campaigns like Boycott, Divest & Sanction (BDS), Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now, who have been working on college campuses and beyond to challenge the dominant narrative and build the movement needed to end this apartheid. The fruits of that work are finally being seen in the halls of power -- for the first time, there are a handful of politicians in Congress naming it for what it is and speaking out against these atrocities, and U.S.’s major role in facilitating them. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for -- and it means we must keep pushing with all of our might to get us over the cultural tipping point, that is now within our sights.

And finally, we discuss our own individual processes in unlearning the propaganda that has been fed to us over the course of our lives and how we came to reject the “it’s just too complicated” narrative, that has been effectively used to discourage exploration of the truth and silence dissent. Milly discusses their own birthright trip as an anti-Zionist, seeing firsthand the nature of a program intended to recruit young Jewish people to settle in Israel...and shares some shocking details of that experience with us that you won’t want to miss.

agitated. S1 Ep2. - Building Life Rafts from Titanic Deck Chairs with Eleanor Goldfield

agitated. S1 Ep2. - Building Life Rafts from Titanic Deck Chairs with Eleanor Goldfield

We interview our friend and radical badass Eleanor Goldfield, about her new film “Hard Road of Hope” which documents the long history and current state of resistance and organizing in West Virginia against the rapacious coal mining and fracking industries that have all but destroyed their communities and the land that sustains them. We also go deep on the meanings and usefulness of words and labels, like “activist” and “anarchist”...and art’s role in revolution.

What’s agitating us? The tension between all the good faith in humanity vibes that comes with successful mutual aid organizing efforts, but also the frustration of knowing that the support is only just temporary and not systemic; laws being passed in states to whitewash U.S. history and punish teachers who teach children the truth; and the existential horror that is the forever reality of plastic waste.

Transition music in this episode is from Eleanor’s EP, No Solo.

Resources discussed:

*Find Mutual Aid networks in your community

*If you haven’t yet, you need to read A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn (and yes, Kaitlin is right, the audio version is narrated by Matt Damon and Howard Zinn)

*Eleanor’s media recommendations: Mint Press News. Popular Resistance. The Grayzone. Break Through News. Redacted Tonight.

A couple definitions and acronyms mentioned:

*BIPOC = Black, Indigenous and People of Color.

*LGBTQ = Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Queer.

*Critical Race Theory = A race-equity framework and approach to understanding educational inequality and structural racism to find solutions that lead to greater justice. CRT seeks to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race and to challenge the mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice.

agitated. S1 Ep.1 - Not Safe For Zoom

May 1, 2021. Season 1, Episode 1 - Not Safe for Zoom. A quick dip into our ideas about what the fuck is going on around here, why this isn’t a Move to Amend podcast, conversations about accountability in a totally racist world, the importance of relationships that help us along, and our thoughts about the creepy asshole obsessing over a mannequin.

What’s agitating us this week? Concentration camps for kids built on toxic waste sites, holier-than-thou tankies, and also a few particular 8th graders (and their parents).

Hosted by Milly Harmon, Shelly Williams, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, and Jessica Munger. A Democracy Unlimited Media Collaborative production. Special thanks to Jason Bayless and A Radical Guide.

agitated. S1 Ep0. - Trailer

agitated. is a podcast for those who care deeply and are mad as hell. Education and inspiration to get you agitated toward action for a world that centralizes love and justice.  Antics included.

Lots of us are feeling distrustful, and disillusioned -- for good reason -- and are looking for a down to Earth and informed analysis of what’s happening in our world that won’t leave us naive to the real deal, or feeling nihilistic and hopeless. Agitated is a show about systems, policy, history, and law and how they create and reflect culture.

Hosted by Jessica Munger, Shelly Williams, Milly Harmon and Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap -- four femme friends and agitators who explore the intersections of culture, social movements, law, and politics all while caring deeply but not taking themselves too seriously. Educational. Inspirational. Actionable.
