Have you ever thought of knitting a love letter to yourself? Gertrūda Gilytė’s durational project: Neuroplasticity or I Love You Gertrūda, does just that. Gilytė merges knitting and TikTok-based video performance to explore self-help discourse and the rise of online mindfulness trends.

Gertrūda Gilytė uses personal development as performance, exploring how self-development practices and personal vulnerabilities may be explored as an artistic tool. Neuroplasticity or I Love You Gertrūda examines personal development through knitting, a craft and method that has proven health and wellbeing benefits, including improving neuroplasticity, lowering blood pressure and slowing the onset of dementia, as well as reducing loneliness, anxiety and depression. “Neuroplasticity” refers to the means by which neural networks may be formed or reinforced through new skills or movements.

This project represents Gilytė’s desire to also explore “the object” and its place within art history. Gilytė has made a daily commitment to knitting “I love you”s into neon green scarves and documenting her process on TikTok until one of her scarves is sold in the art market. Her definitive goal of attributing art market value to a self-improvement object seeks to reflect the means by which personal development practices are becoming increasingly commodified.

This critique is amplified through the use of TikTok as a performance space and tool, in which Gilytė submerges within a narrative of influencer culture and mainstream personal development trends. Gilytė documents this process through daily TikTok videos that take place in various performative settings, accompanied by voice-overs that explore both her personal development and the performative aspects of a digital mindfulness persona. The artist questions the sincerity of her performance throughout, as Gilytė illuminates in one TikTok: “knitting is somehow seen as being a really wholesome activity, domestic and fragile maybe, […] but does it remain the same way if it’s purely performative? If, for example, I’m not wholesome at all but want to trick you, to appear this way?”

About the artist

Gertrūda Gilytė (born 1992, Lithuania) is a New Media artist whose work revolves around the theme of “personal development as a performative practice”. In 2022, she finished her MA in Art in Context at the University of Arts, Berlin. In 2016, she graduated from Sculpture Department at Vilnius Academy of Arts.  In 2015, she graduated in Political Science at Vilnius University.

For this #womensmonth, discover the artist residency project X-pop by @leahroh

►► More info

What comes into your mind when you think about Oriental women? Are they smiley discreet yellow faces, are they K-pop chic or cynical like in the Squid Game series?

In this work called X-pop, Leah Roh confronts the covert and overt racist depictions of East-Asian archetypes from pop culture, in a gamified satirical web-based VR experience. The viewer will experience the X-pop, a virtual celebration of Hollywood’s “Asian-American” community, in Mozilla Hubs.

About the artist

Leah Roh (b. 1991 – USA) is a Brooklyn-based 3D artist and educator. She builds computer-generated experiences that explore the ways in which interactive technologies can bridge the gap between new media and pop culture. Through 3D animation and game engine software, Leah designs engaging experiences based on her personal relationship with overt and covert systemic racism and sexism as a Korean-American woman, stemming from the inequities in representation in mainstream media. Her practice examines how virtual mediums can cultivate accessible spaces for cultural engagement and be applied for experiential education and storytelling. She is a NEW INC alum and currently teaches Experiential Art at Pratt Institute’s New Media programme and 3D design at NYU’s Integrated Design Media programme.

22.03.13 Recentering #2: Vanessa Murrell from DATEAGLE ART

Hosted by Bethan Carrick @bethanelericarrick

Vanessa talks to Beth about DATEAGLE ART’s recent projects and discusses the everyday considerations that curators and gallerists go through to reach sustainable goals. Revealing how exhibition-making is not a simple path from artist to viewer, instead of being a constant mediation of multiple webs, Vanessa considers the path to achieving sustainability through curation.

DATEAGLE ART is a London-based contemporary art platform highlighting emerging and under-represented artists, founded in 2017 by curatorial duo Martin Mayorga and Vanessa Murrell. The pair have established a diverse, creative community through their intimate approach to connecting with artists. Cultivating online journal content, studio visits, interviews, offline exhibitions and public programming, the platform engages in an extensive discourse, observed through the lens of the artists they work with.

Originating from Spain, Vanessa Murrell is an art curator, educator and writer based in London. Concerned with the inclusivity of emerging artists and neglected sectors, she co-founded the contemporary art platform DATEAGLE ART in 2017. She has interviewed 150+ UK artists, co-curated exhibitions introducing 50+ artists and expanded her activities with commissions, exhibitions, educational initiatives and public programming. Her texts have been published in  Coeval, Dazed, émergent, Flash Art, METAL, Ocula, Soft Punk and Something Curated

Hello and welcome.

I'm Beth, your host for this new series called Recentering, which explores contemporary New Media Art through the lens of environmental sustainability.

The climate crisis is at the forefront of our collective mind right now. Whilst the art world's impact on the crisis is small in comparison to industries such as construction and agriculture, it still has a part to play.

In the series, I want to recenter the conversation around art and the environmental crisis, demonstrating the ways in which art can engage audiences on an emotional level on these vital topics, transcending facts, figures, and politics.

I'll be discussing with new media artists, curators and creative practitioners on the ways in which they push the boundaries through that practice in order to engage audiences with the environmental issues of today.

21.11.09 Agora Residency: “honey, i’m home”); - Amiss Collective

Raluca Moldoveanu and Alice Prum (Amiss Collective) talked with Isabella Helms about their residency project “honey, i’m home”);

As the domestic landscape engages with objects in relation to social constructs, the Amiss proposal captures meanings within objects of the banal: mirrors and concepts of identity and vanity; laptops and notions of digital connectivity; cleaning supplies as a reflection on gender roles; makeup items suggesting the struggle surrounding beauty standards; magazines and idea of connection with media and culture; beds and definitions of sexuality. The use of some of the stated above objects supports the intrinsic nature of biases which has become embedded seamlessly into our daily routines. Each of such objects would be used as a trigger for a curated collage video reflecting on media and iconic popular culture moments, suggesting that such items not only further embody critical social significance but also bring forward the intersection of digital and physical space.

21.11.05 Agora Residency: Women in Proverbs - Irem Çoban (in English)

21.11.05 Agora Residency: Women in Proverbs - Irem Çoban (in English)

Are all proverbs always wise? Discover some extravagant thoughts about women with Turkish illustrator, Irem Çoban.

Artist: Irem Çoban

Project: Women in Proverbs

Digital Curator: Isil Celik

Wherever you are from and whichever language you speak, just think of a proverb that objectifies or disparages women. Most probably, you will come up with one, if not with many. The Digital Art exhibition Women in Proverbs provides a colourful criticism of the ways in which proverbs around the world depict women.

This year, Agora Digital Art’s artist in resident in September was İrem Çoban, a Turkish Digital Art artist and academic. Çoban’s art practice merges illustration, videography and cinema with a focus on gender studies. Through her work, Irem brings a critical visual narrative to the issues women face worldwide.

Proverbs can be seen as condensed moral guides to life. As a matter of fact, they communicate perceived truths and commonly shared values of the culture for which they speak. Despite being cultural, they lay claim to truth and make a random cultural idea sound like absolute wisdom. This way, proverbs don’t only mirror cultural values but also function as ideological tools that transmit and revitalise those values within and in-between generations.

It is not surprising that patriarchal cultures produce proverbs that devalue, objectify, and demonise women. For identity is plastic and it is socially constructed in connection with cultural values, in patriarchal societies, those proverbs ensure that women are perceived as naturally degraded or villains. By teaching how to see women, they help to construct woman-identity as such. As a result, they play a historical role in the persecution of women’s existence through witch-hunts, insane asylums, child marriages, infanticides and so on.

21.11.05 Agora Residency: Atasözlerinde Kadın - İrem Çoban (Türkiye’den Misafir Sanatçı)

21.11.05 Agora Residency: Atasözlerinde Kadın - İrem Çoban (Türkiye’den Misafir Sanatçı)

Atasözleri her zaman doğru mu söyler? Türk illüstratör İrem Çoban ile kadınlar hakkında yanlış bilinenleri keşfedin.

Sanatçı: Irem Çoban

Proje: Atasözlerinde Kadın - Women in Proverbs

This talk explores in-depth Shapiro’s series called #Cuerpas, a poignant visual exploration of the self, the female body and empowerment of identity that can arise when a woman goes on the other side of the camera.

Starting last December at The Liminal gallery in Valencia, Spain; Cuerpas is an investigation of identity, ageism and body-representation. These works include repeated encounters mixing multi-media including self-portrait collages, videos, projections and performance elements.

In contrast to the male gaze, for Emma Shapiro, the act of filming is a physical work in which one is both seeing and being seen. Her performance works emphasise torment, discomfort, vulnerability and exposure as a constant search to create a new language that would differ, in a more nuanced manner, from those of our fathers or lovers.

More Info ►► Talk Page

How can humans hope to transmit our cultural heritage into the future when humanity’s entire existence is a mere blink of an eye on a cosmic time scale? What does this sense of scale—of the vastness of time and space—means for art?

Utilising a post-New Media approach, wherein the media employed are merely vehicles in service of underlying concepts, Ashley Zelinskie attempts the process of translating our vast history into a universal language meant to stand the test of time.

By fabricating traditional objects in dual forms—as the classical entity and the data that represent them—her work seeks to focus a lens on our place as a small part of a larger whole. By drawing her inspiration from historical ideas and icons she is coding the essence of humanity into works of art—art for the singularity.

21.05.19 Agora Talk 21: Embodiment and Interventions in Digital Art – Marjan Mogghaddam

As a pioneer in 3dCG and Digital Art, Marjan Moghaddam will take us on a journey through feminism, embodiment and #arthack interventions, spanning her career from the early days to the established artist today.

Curator and Moderator: Elizabeth Richardson

About the artist

From important museum shows to viral animations, Marjan Moghaddam’s art practice offers lessons in expanding art history into the 21st century in authentic and persistent ways. Her pioneering techniques in each era have innovated aesthetically, technologically, conceptually, and philosophically.

While technology creates flatness in culture, she has delivered profound, moving, and sublime works. Whether it be through her proprietary technique of Chronometric Sculpture which blends the ideals of animation with that of sculpture, to her unique approach to the digital embodiment that employs her figural vocabulary of 3d CG modelling and character animation, she has sought out the profound aspects of contemporariness through digital toolsets.

A rare opportunity to hear from one of the very few women in the world with such a prolific digital art practice.

This talk explored how Digital Art, with its capacity to replicate and virtualise our reality, can help to redefine our notion of ‘being humans’. Drawing from the postfeminist writings of Rosi Braidotti, artist Lito Kattou explores the way we interact with the world by creating installations that keeps human characteristics as part of their ambiguous forms, implying in this way morphological conversations and adaptations. As part of her residency for 89plus curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets at Google Cultural Institute in Paris in 2017, Kattou realised San, an ungendered AI hybridly conceived with the human, divine, and animal traits, living in the Red Lake in Mitsero, Cyprus – recreated by Kattou as a real-time digital environment.

21.03.10 Queer as Art: Sammie Veeler

The new podcast series Queer as Art is focusing on queer digital artists, hosted and curated by Amiel Maucade, Digital Curator @AgoraDigitalArt

About the Artist

Sammie Veeler is a Californian multidisciplinary artist. Her prolific production encompasses literature, music and virtual reality. From writing her own democratic and participatory novel based on James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, following a Surrealist legacy of the train of thought, to experimental and organic music producing, Sammie Veeler asserts her Jack of all trades status.

Coming from as much self-exploration as self-knowledge, her touch all work tackles identity issues and societal problems which could seem esoteric at first, but ultimately invites the visitor into her own realm.

With vulnerability and generosity, Sammie Veeler creates her theatre, constantly breaking the fourth wall and deconstructing the trans-ego.

Her creativity materializes in VR, as she helps run New Art City, a virtual gallery and exhibition toolkit to experience digital art.

21.02.10 Agora Talk 16: DSLcollection: A Challenging Project between the Gaming and the Art experience - Karen Levy

In exclusivity for Agora; @KLevy75 from @Aika.Connection  introduced us the “Forgetter”, the new VR Game concept to host the prestigious #DSLcollection.

More info ►►   @AgoraDigitalArt

What did we learn?

What are the curatorial challenges to build narratives and immersive experiences in different environments: such as #VRChat or on #Stream - the gaming platform.

DSLCollection

From the very beginning of setting up the DSLcollection in 2005, Dominique and Sylvain Levy wanted to establish a model that would make collecting art continuously active and meaningful, always moving with the shifting times.

This collection pursues an interactive and participatory approach, redefining the traditional relationships between art and its audience, deconsecrating the public’s approach to art, avoiding any intimidation and countering the notion of art as elitist.

In 2010, the collection was the first available on an IPad. In 2012, the collection built a museum on Second Life. In 2016, DSLcollection was among the first private collections to build a VR museum.

Today, DSLcollection embarks on a new journey in the video game realm. For the collection, this new adventure is a creative project that uses gaming as a language.

21.02.17 Agora Talk 17: Lend Me Your Face – Go Fake Yourself! – Tamiko Thiel and Jon Uriarte

Tamiko Thiel, Multimedia artist and Jon Uriarte, Digital Curator at The Photographers’ Gallery for Lend Me Your Face – Go Fake Yourself! a participatory deep fake artificial intelligence project on view at TPG until 17 March 2021.

This project uses deep fake artificial intelligence technology to animate single photos of faces with facial expressions and body language "borrowed" from driving videos of public figures.

With deep fake AI technology, the face - the most intimate and yet public part of the self - and the emotions it expresses can more and more easily be manipulated and placed in contexts out of the control of the "lenders" of the faces themselves.

What have we learned?

  1. How the project Lend Me Your Face – Go Deepfake Yourself! is a performative participatory project.
  2. We can reflect upon the limitation of the machine with its imperfection and glitch.
  3. The models were chosen because they were specific to a particular political moment.
  4. The Photographers Gallery has a wonderful gold mine of information about the evolution of imagery and Data sets. Check the links below.
  5. Today, artists and photographers have to learn both: lens work and software skills. And, Computational Photography is rapidly evolving.

Monica Vlad designs and develops new media installations and sound spaces. She uses new and old technology as an artistic medium of expression and as a medium for audiovisual communication. She explores their potential for spatial communication and art. She designs audio-video performances, media sculptures, installations that have an effect on their respective locations, giving them an identity — beyond their function and architecture. With her work, she likes to create new experiences and immerse the participant in the piece. The sound of her performances is mainly based on noise, ambient, experimental, from low to very high frequencies that one can barely hear; from minimal to glitch, from analogue to digital. Part of her artistic research is also the sound localisation attributes, surround – sound psychoacoustics, acousmatic and quadrophonic sound, sound image. The best way of participating as a viewer is to walk around through the room – as any new location has different characteristics – at the same time, regarding the sound but also the visuals. For her visuals, Monica creates new media of projection, coupled with the sound, which creates new immersive exposure to “reality”. For her light installations, she works with solid light that can easily be perceived. The viewer is invited to directly engage and experience with the sculptural characteristics of light. The installations carry performative and participatory qualities: while walking through space, as the viewer morphs into the landscape which disrupts the autonomy of the exhibition space and imposes its own spatial and temporal identity.⁣

  2. That the future is, of course, digital with all the digital natives (kids under 10 years old) or Generation Alpha.
  3. That Gate22 as a Museum 2.0 will tailored-made the exhibition with layers of narratives from the quick peek-a-boo visitor to the highly academic one.
  4. That a VR exhibition is about the experience lived – not really owning an artefact to decorate the wall.

20.09.23 Agora Talk7: How Digital Art encourages connectivity across borders – Ellie Niblock and Alaa Tarabzouni

Artists Ellie Niblock (UK) and Alaa Tarazbouni (Saudi Arabia) collectively explore the environment both digital and physical through the lens of sculpture and architecture. With Love, From Nowhere: The Places of the Not-Yet is an exploration into unknowable places of the not yet, translating an impossible physical experience of visiting the fictional non-places through the combination of drawing, sculpture, 3D scanning, mapping and sound; thus, making the imaginary, intangible spaces comprehendible through the virtual domain.

20.09.09 Agora Talk6: Can Digital Arts Help You Fall In Love? - Elif Eda

20.09.09 Agora Talk6: Can Digital Arts Help You Fall In Love? - Elif Eda

The Thing Between Us” is the first VR film of Elif Eda who performed, directed and produced this incredible work.

As a filmmaker, Elif Eda has always thought the movies she makes or produces should create new “eyes” for the audience rather than telling a story written in stone. She has always wanted the audience, eventually, to replace her/his eyes with the characters’ eyes and start telling the story of another person to themselves as if it is theirs.

What have we learned?

  1. Can a gaze kill us? Is it a micro-aggression when someone stares at you?
  2. Why society is judging you for a simple piece of cloth?
  3. How VR is transposing the viewer in reality itself.
  4. Discover how digital art can help us to love, to understand each other.

20.08.26 Agora Talk5: The Liminality of The Digital Art - Snow Yunxue Fu and Wade Wallerstein

20.08.26 Agora Talk5: The Liminality of The Digital Art - Snow Yunxue Fu and Wade Wallerstein

In this talk, Snow Yunxue Fu and Wade Wallerstein gave us deep insight about Liminal, Liminality and Liminoid. And, Wade Wallerstein shared with us a few examples of his Digital Curatorial work for Silicon Valet.

How does the concept of liminality and liminoid play in contemporary digital art?

The word liminal is often used to discuss the sublime within digital space and the VR experience, conjuring up notions of time, space, and perception, and echoing the experience of the sublime in nature. Working primarily with 3D software, Fu creates scenes of experimental abstraction that translate the concept of liminality into the digital experience.

►►   More info https://agoradigital.art/agora-talks/past-talks/the-liminality-in-the-digital-art-snow-yunxue-fu-and-wade-wallerstein/

What have we learned?

1. The difference between Liminal, Liminality and Liminoid.

2. What Snow Yunxue Fu refers to the "Techno Sublime".

3. A furtive look at the vast domain of Digital Curation.

4. How the Internet and social media can amplify your reach.
