97. Part 2 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E13: “Children of the Forest”

A grieving father considers the nightmarish world that betrayed his daughter’s hopeful send-off. But even in the darkness, Artur Braus [no, not a typo] reveals a striking ability to seize the light. And he definitely gets extra points for nonetheless scaring the daylights out of the Braun brat, haha. We also take time to consider the evolution—or is it devolution?—of the Scout Regiment’s core mission and role. ========= This is one of those episodes where the comment section will be open on YouTube, so feel free to sound off there! HOWEVER...if you're a manga reader, PLEASE make sure to properly mark off and hide from view any Season 4 spoilers you wish to share (that is, use a spoiler warning and make sure the spoiler material itself is below the "read more" tag). I do plan on moderating comments to try and help people avoid getting accidentally spoiled regarding Season 4. And if you're a troll who wants to deliberately do that for "fun"? …I'll respond accordingly. All right, folks. Shinzou wo sasageyo!! ========= Content Notice: Regarding content, most of my coverage of Attack on Titan will be in the PG range, unless otherwise noted. PG-13 will be when we get into things like particularly graphic descriptions of violence and suicide. The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence—mainly of the action type. That aspect gets very intense. There's some strong language here and there, but not to where it's really noteworthy, and as far as I can recall, there's been no graphic nudity or sexual content thus far, though there are certain other content caveats mentioned in my review. 96. Reaction to “Attack on Titan,” Season 4, Episode 13: “Children of the Forest”

Hopefully it’s not going to become a running theme for Eren’s and Zeke’s acolytes to so gravely endanger Eren’s actual friends. It’s one of many reasons we need more folks like Mr. Braus and fewer like Floch Forster. We also need Gabi to finally get a clue. Maybe this time, with so many startling twists and turns, things will finally start to stick? ========= This is one of those episodes where the comment section will be open on YouTube, so feel free to sound off there! 95. Part 4 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E12: “Guides”

Whoo, final part! I’m properly caught up now with the coverage, my dear listeners. Which means I need to promptly begin the work for Episode 13, pfft. But for now:

  • The things I didn’t fancy about MAPPA’s rendering of the jacket/jailbreak scene (plus I'll share some counterarguments regarding those issues)
  • A couple of resources for those seeking to cosplay as Eren or “Ellen” Jaeger—or just borrow his slick style
  • And a small but neat detail not mentioned in the anime version of the sequence

94. Part 3 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E12: “Guides”

Eren’s screen time in this episode was brief, but once again there was plenty of impact achieved in just those short moments with him.

If I want to be humorous about it, “Hobo Eren” has completed his leg of the mission, and now “Chad Eren” has officially arrived.

In this episode of the podcast, I’ll highlight some favorite things regarding MAPPA’s adaptation of this fan-adored scene.

92. Reaction to “Attack on Titan,” Season 4, Episode 12: “Guides”

As though there aren’t enough external issues to reckon with, we see the storm clouds gather as Paradis’ internal dynamics begin to roil with discontentment once more. In this episode of the podcast, we’ll take a quick look at the different factions, plus address a particular claim made regarding Eren’s actions here.

I’ve been able to grant Gabi a fair bit of leeway thus far. But now she’s quite thoroughly trampling on whatever positives she did have to offer. And as Gabi spirals downward, Falco is left to pick up the slack. Abbreviated Content Notice: Regarding content, most of my coverage of Attack on Titan will be in the PG range, unless otherwise noted. PG-13 will be when we get into things like particularly graphic descriptions of violence and suicide.

The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence, mainly of the action type.

Eren’s Kruger-inspired scene in the opening of the episode was pure fudging HYPE. And looking a little deeper, I think it also hints at his development as a Titan Shifter, soldier, and young man stepping into adulthood after having trodden such a difficult path.

We’ll also be exploring a couple of brief but powerful moments of revelation involving Mikasa and Armin, respectively. What might the narrative be telling us here?

With getting to see Hange Zoë's classic frantic energy once more, I find myself again contemplating my concerns about her as a leader, and her recent attempts to change her tune. Additionally, we continue to see both parallels and surprising reversals when it comes to Eren and other characters: Armin, Gabi…even our favorite crazy scientist herself.

Content Notice: Regarding content, most of my coverage of Attack on Titan will be in the PG range, unless otherwise noted. PG-13 will be when we get into things like particularly graphic descriptions of violence and suicide.

The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence, mainly of the action type. That aspect gets very intense. There's some strong language here and there, but not to where it's really noteworthy, and as far as I can recall, there's been no graphic nudity or sexual content thus far, though there are certain other content caveats mentioned in
my review.

71. Part 6 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E8: “Assassin's Bullet”

I don’t know if she’s trying to do an impression of a travel writer, a 1970s musician, or a slapstick comedienne on a flight of stairs…but either way, Hange is straight tripping.

P.S. I meant to mention this sooner, but I wanted to make sure I featured SuperSama's reaction to Episode 2 of the season, as I was both highly impressed and highly amused by how early and accurately he had scoped out Gabi and her issues.

In this episode of the podcast, I’ll be focusing on Sasha’s role in “Assassin’s Bullet,” and the choices made regarding her arc there—and to some degree in previous seasons, as well: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Unfortunately, I feel the latter two somewhat dominated in this 8th episode of the season.…

67. Part 2 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E8: “Assassin's Bullet”

Between the anime and having seen parts of the manga, I definitely understand some of why folks despise Gabi—especially after this most recent episode. But I see the lil brat more as a tragic and surprisingly sympathetic figure rather than a monster.

In this episode, I’ll go into why.

But, boy, Falco sure chose a walking Goddarned migraine as his girlfriend prospect.…

[P.S. Though I just mentioned the manga above, this episode is still safe for anime-only folks, as is my norm here.]

66. Reaction to “Attack on Titan,” Season 4, Episode 8: “Assassin's Bullet”

When it comes to “Attack on Titan” characters, Gabi Braun is definitely on the list of ones that tend to inspire strong feelings. And that’s no doubt become more true than ever with the revelations we got earlier this week, with the premiere of “Assassin’s Bullet.” [Appropriate numbering for the podcast episode, eh?]

Is the fan hostility towards Gabi mainly a matter of her sex, as some would argue, or instead her behavior and personality? And can you reasonably be a fan of young Eren while not liking the current version we have of Gabi, despite the similarities between the two characters?

Those are the topics I’ll be addressing today as we begin delving into Episode 8.

65. Part 4 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E7: “Assault”

As we (hopefully!) wrap up coverage for Episode 7, I take a look at:

  • Some details from the scene with Reiner and Falco
  • A few musical moments that stood out to me
  • And a couple of things that caught my eye in the Episode 8 preview

P.S. I identified it before as a Thunder Spear, but in rewatching some of the footage, I'm now less certain what type of explosive Levi used to destroy the Beast Titan's nape, especially as he seems to have detonated it at point-blank range. If anyone can clarify that, I'd appreciate it!

63. Part 2 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E7: “Assault”

Despite our not having much dialogue from Eren this episode, it was once again made clear how he’s matured and developed over time, his calm analytical skills when under pressure and his ability to adapt to the flow of battle both shining through. And the dialogue we did get from him didn’t waste a word, with Kaji Yuki getting maximum impact in that short space of work.

This was a sequence I’d been greatly anticipating, and while I ultimately had some disappointment—which I’ll discuss in the podcast this time—the voice and character acting were NOT on that list.

P.S. The web page for this podcast episode at AhsokaJackson.com will have a transcript (and translation) for the featured dialogue samples, in case you need a quick refresher.

58. Part 12 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

As this main session of the interview draws to a close, Wolf and I hone in on questions of how the Founding Titan's powers work, the possible benefits of royal blood, and how Eren might eventually unlock his full powers as a Titan Shifter. Skipped the outro in order to maintain a briefer length, so my sign-off is in written form: Be blessed, stay salty, and thank you for listening!

This is one of those episodes where the comment section will be open on YouTube, so feel free to sound off there!

57. Part 11 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

In this installment of the interview, WolfManiac_ turns the tables, asking me for my thoughts on that intriguing moment at the very beginning of this season's first episode.… We also contemplate what the results may be if Eren succeeds in consuming the War Hammer Titan.

55. Part 9 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

55. Part 9 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

In this ninth part of the WolfManiac_ interview, we talk about symbolism in the series and begin looking ahead to the next few episodes of the show. Of particular note is Wolf's theory regarding Falco's future…assuming Falco has survived the attack, that is.

P.S. I referred to it as "The Hanging Man," but the exact name for the tarot card uses "Hanged" rather than "Hanging."

  • WolfManiac_ highlights a crucial point about Eren's established personality and behavioral patterns
  • And we end up discussing the depth and nuance to be found in "Attack on Titan" and in anime as a whole

53. Part 7 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

53. Part 7 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

Taking the lead in this section as I share with WolfManiac_ and the audience my recent discoveries when it comes to the question of whether or not Eren's actions in Liberio were war crimes (speaking more as an overall thing rather than action-by-action).… It's still a very sticky thing, but even a little glimmer of light is nice to have, given the circumstances.

Many thanks to the folks whose posts first highlighted this info for me! This is a particular question that had really gotten to me, as you might imagine. Hopefully I can eventually locate them again and add the comments or excerpts of them to the episode web page in order to credit the specific users. Right now I'm in a bit of a time crunch, however, so the hunt will have to wait.…

50. Part 4 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

Part 4 of my interview with WolfManiac_. This time:

  • We talk about favorite parts of the episode
  • We begin discussion of some of the key questions and issues that Eren’s attack on Liberio is now forcing the audience and the characters themselves to confront
  • We examine the wildly different points of reference our characters have for warfare and for their own roles as soldiers in the midst of it

P.S. Whoo-hoo!! Episode 50!! Pretty nice that we hit the milestone as part of the interview. I don't really need to do anything extra to make this special, but…ahh, heck. I'll post some fun gifs and vids below to celebrate Episode 50. Come to think of it, since the stuff I'm thinking of off the top of my head involves the 2 Ackermann Clan members, and both of them made their Season 4 debut in Episode 6, as well…yup, think I'll have a few vids each for Mikasa and Levi.

For now, this will only be on the episode web page, not in the description on other podcast sites. I may add my usual multi-link later, but…for now, just keeping it as a main-website perk.

49. Part 3 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E6: “The War Hammer Titan”

In Part 3 of my interview with WolfManiac_ regarding Episode 6, we discuss:

  • Our least favorite bits of the episode
  • Finally getting to see members of Squad Levi arrive
  • An intense yet also subtle way we got to see Eren’s growth as a fighter

By the way…I'm kinda looking forward to when that tall soldier is properly unmasked.… To manga readers: Ya znayu ["I know"]. I just hope the fandom doesn't use that as an opportunity for more…weirdness.
