Planted Materials is taking algae that was previously considered waste, and turning it into cleaning products such as aquarium cleaners and soaps.   

The company was started only a year ago, but has already shipped their first product at www.greenwaterlabs.com, sold 2.5K units, and generated more than $60K in revenue. In 2023, they will continue to increase sales of their aquarium cleaner and focus R&D efforts on new products such as soaps and paper. 

They will also aim to partner with other brands who might want to white label and source their algae based products.

There are currently 500K unfilled manufacturing roles in the U.S., with the average time to make a manufacturing hire taking 55 days and costing companies $28K. By 2030, there is expected to be 2.1M unfilled manufacturing positions.   

Open X courses take 45 days to complete, are 90% less expensive, and are sponsored by manufacturers who need the exact skills taught. This results in 5 day hiring windows for organizations that partner with Open X at half the cost.   

Open X is working with major companies like Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin, as well as the U.S. Air Force.

While celebrities and influencers raise funds (like Kim Kardashian), we are also seeing tools like Carta and AngelList go mainstream making it easier for anyone in the world to invest in the startup asset class. Startups represent the future of our economy and it is critical that more people have access as well as an understanding of how this ecosystem works.

In Episode 9 of The HyperGuap Show, Gali and Aidan interview Jeff Nobbs, the CEO of Zero Acre Farms. Zero Acre Farms is disrupting the $290B vegetable oil market which is the 3rd most consumed on the planet. Vegetable oils, which are in nearly everything we eat, are bad for us and bad for our environment.   Zero Acre Farms has created cultured oil, a new type of vegetable oil that is better for us and our planet by using fermentation technology.   

The company just completed a $37M Series A round led by Lower Carbon and Fifty Years and came out of stealth mode to launch a cultured oil made by fermentation, not deforestation (like traditional vegetable oils).
