Ep. 66: The Springfield Three

Ep. 66: The Springfield Three

Graduation Night, 1992.

Suzie Streeter and Stacey McCall arrive home to Suzie's mother Sherrill's house in a giddy daze. They're finally done with high school, and they have summer - and their whole lives - ahead of them. The next day they're heading to the water park with friends to celebrate, and starting to think about what the future holds.

They would never find out.

Suzie, Stacey, and Sherrill disappeared from the Streeter-Levitt home sometime between 3am and 8am the next morning, and they likely haven't been seen or heard from since. So, what happened?? Did they leave of their own free will? Did someone commit an unprecedented 3-adult kidnapping? And if so, who, and why?

We investigate the mystery that's haunted the Ozarks town of Springfield, Missouri for the better part of our lifetimes...and try to find some answers.

Holiday Greetings from Ain't it Scary

Holiday Greetings from Ain't it Scary

Happy holidays from your favorite ghoulish couple! No, not Gomez and Morticia...okay, maybe second favorite, then.

Due to health reasons we unexpectedly have to take a break this week (fingers are crossed that Omicron hasn't come down our chimney) but we wanted to leave our Scary Squad a message of holiday cheer to sustain you until next week's Yuletide episode.

Thank you all for making this year so awesome, and thanks for bearing with us during these - everyone say it with us! - "uncertain times". If you're really missing us this week, come over to Patreon and check out our back catalog of minisodes and more. We'll even have a new Ainterview with Paul Ferrante (Carrie's dad) on "Paul is Dead" dropping this week, as we luckily recorded it a little while ago.

Have fun and be safe, and we'll hopefully see you next week!

Ep. 64: Deaths on Everest

Ep. 64: Deaths on Everest

The weather outside is frightful...but not as frightful as the weather on Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world and highest point on Earth! In honor of the chilly season we're taking a dangerous journey to explore the most horrific tragedies and creepiest facts about the world's tallest peak...including the fact that the mountain is literally littered with corpses.

Yes, the culmination of mountaineering achievement - summiting Mt. Everest - isn't possible without basically climbing over the dead, semi-mummified bodies of unsuccessful climbers past. These include George Mallory, who may have been the first person to summit Everest (but didn't make it down alive); "Green Boots", the horrific so-called mile marker made by the body of a deceased climber; and the victims of the 1996 Everest disaster and 2014/2015 Everest avalanches. Who knew the pinnacle of, well, pinnacles was so freaky and deadly?

Join us on an expedition through Everest mountaineering history, the tragedies along the way...and the remains of those who never made it back to Base Camp alive.

Ep. 62: "Paul is Dead" - The Beatles Death Conspiracy

Ep. 62: "Paul is Dead" - The Beatles Death Conspiracy

In honor of the Beatles documentary Get Back premiering over Thanksgiving on Disney+, Carrie takes us through one of her favorite conspiracies of all time: "Paul is Dead".

This conspiracy theory, which spread across the globe like wildfire beginning in late 1969, purports that the "Cute Beatle", Paul McCartney - writer of such classic songs as "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", and more - was killed in a tragic car accident in November 1966. Not wanting to cause mass hysteria, The Beatles partnered up with MI-5 to cover up the untimely death, hiding the truth from the press and replacing McCartney with a lookalike, William Shears Campbell. Fake Paul, or 'Faul', premiered on the album cover art and in the songs for The Beatles' subsequent album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band...and has played the part of Paul McCartney ever since.

At least, that's what the conspiracy claims. And there are apparently dozens of clues to back the theory up; clues placed purposefully in the lyrics, music, and album art of The Beatles' final works before their official breakup in 1970. There are even tidbits to be found throughout each of The Beatles' solo careers, too.

Carrie explores and explains all of the most intriguing clues, gives us the skinny on what "I Am the Walrus" really means, and debates the strange sounds heard in backwards Beatles recordings. Do these strange backmasks really hold the key to unravel the mystery of "Paul is Dead"?

Ep. 59: Valiant Thor

On March 16th, 1957, a Venusian named Valiant Thor landed his flying saucer in Alexandria, Virginia. After meeting Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon at the White House, Thor would live in an a luxury apartment in the base of the Pentagon for the next three years, while he helped the American government develop new technology and... tried to share the good word about Jesus?

Anyway, that's the assertion made by 1967's Stranger at the Pentagon, a classic of UFO contactee "nonfiction" whose presence is still felt in pop culture today - from Ancient Aliens to the MCU and even American Horror Story, where a version of Valiant Thor himself is making an appearance this season.

Sean sat down with the book to answer the essentials: Who was this mysterious, fingerprintless man from the stars? What did he want with us? And where did he go - if he ever left??

Ep. 58: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 3 - The Executions

Ep. 58: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 3 - The Executions

Here we are at the long-awaited final episode in our Salem Witch Trials series. What is there to say aside from that on this episode we examine the worst miscarriages of justice in the whole hysteria: the 20 innocent people executed on blatantly vague charges of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts during the latter half of 1692. We see the deaths of John Proctor, the hero of the play The Crucible; the brutal pressing death of stubborn Giles Corey, the tragic murder of Salem's former minister Reverend George Burroughs, and more.

We also explore theories around how this was allowed to happen, and what Salem and Massachusetts have done since to exonerate and honor the victims of this tragic time over 300 years ago.

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: "Ain't it Kitschy?" Ep. 1 - Halloween Novelty Songs (Patreon Preview)

HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: "Ain't it Kitschy?" Ep. 1 - Halloween Novelty Songs (Patreon Preview)

What does that mishmash of an episode title mean? Well, gentle listeners, this week in honor of the approaching All Hallow's Eve we are taking a short break to prepare our intense final episode of our "Salem Witch Trials" series and dropping in a preview of some content we have going on over at Patreon!

We just launched a currently Patreon-exclusive new mini-series, "Ain't it Kitschy?", where we will be diving into everything, well, kitschy - kitschy being defined as things considered to be gaudy, vulgar, or sometimes in bad taste, but we define as things that are, well, pleasantly dorky and sometimes vintage or excessively sentimental. Think that painting of dogs playing poker, Velvet Elvises, or in this first episode's case, novelty songs. Halloween novelty songs, to be exact.

In honor of the most wonderful time of the year, HALLOWEEN!!, Carrie will be taking us through the history and oddity of two Halloween songs that range from obscure to ubiquitous: "Batman, Wolfman, Frankenstein, or Dracula" by The Diamonds, and "The Monster Mash" by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & the Crypt Kicker Five.

Join us for a little ghoultide merriment, and a whole lot of Carrie waxing poetic about doo-wop music! Thanks for allowing us this mini-break to prep our upcoming wedding reception, we hope you enjoy the episode (and join us over at Patreon!!), and we'll see you next week for the conclusion of the Salem Witch Trials: the executions.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Ep. 57: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 2 - The Accused

Ep. 57: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 2 - The Accused

In this 2nd part of what's become a 3-part series, we dive deeper into the tragic events of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials and how the hysteria began to rapidly spread across Salem and beyond - now in the guise of dozens of arrests and hearings with suspected witches fingered by a gaggle of mostly teenage girls.

Carrie introduces us to the key players in the Salem Witch Trials and the context in which they existed...from afflicted girl Mercy Lewis' deep-rooted trauma from being orphaned by Maine's Native American wars, to elderly jerk Giles Corey accusing his own wife of witchcraft only to see suspicion cast on himself, to Salem's former minister Reverend George Burroughs being dragged back to town all the way from Maine for questioning...and many more. We try and take these real people from just names on a centuries-old list of victims to a more potent - and horrific - reality.

Ep. 56: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 1 - The Accusers

Ep. 56: The Salem Witch Trials, Pt. 1 - The Accusers

We've finally come to our long promised two-parter on one of Carrie's pet interests, the Salem Witch Trials!

In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, tensions were already high. The Puritan colonists were struggling through the "Little Ice Age" devastating their crops, paranoid about being attacked by neighboring Native American tribes, and quarreling with their minister and each other about who the most godly of the bunch really was. The atmosphere was rife for backstabbing and tragedy, and that tragedy was about to hit in a horrific way.

It began with whispers, and would end with screams. Was the root of the Salem Witch Trials the hysteria of a group of young girls? Was everyone completely zonked out from ergot poisoning? Or had Satan himself really infiltrated this infighting colonial town? Join us, as we explore the whole unbelievable story of the Salem Witch Trials in the next two episodes.

Ep. 53: Jamestown Cannibalism - America's First Horror

Jamestown, Virginia was the first successful English settlement in North America (for the first UNsuccessful one, go check out our episode on Roanoke) - but it came close to failing completely many, many times. The worst of these failures being the tragic Starving Time.

Plagued by a deadly combination of famine, disease, and an enemy Native tribe, the Starving Time in winter 1609-1610 almost wiped out the entire colony, leaving only 60 survivors from the original group of 500. And some of these desperate survivors were forced to commit one of the most horrific acts imaginable to live...cannibalism.

In 2012 archaeological proof was finally discovered that confirmed what some historians had suspected all along: the Jamestown survivors ate their fellow man during the Starving Time. This week, we take a trip back in time to this deadly winter, and debate if we'd be able to make these terrible choices ourselves.

We also have a super-sized news segment this episode with 2 stories on True Crime Time: the second part of the strange saga of South Carolina's blue-blooded Murdaugh family, and the tragic disappearance and murder of Gabby Petito - a case that is still unfolding as we record.

Ep. 51: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood

Ep. 51: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood was one of the biggest film stars of the late 50s and early 60s, starring in such classics as Miracle On 34th Street while still a child and continuing on to acclaimed roles in Rebel Without a Cause, Splendor in the Grass, West Side Story, and more. By 1981 her career had cooled, but she still had one thing from her early days of stardom - her marriage to fellow actor Robert Wagner. Well, remarriage, to be precise.

There was uncertainty about whether the second Wood-Wagner marriage would survive much longer by the time the couple, fellow movie star Christopher Walken, and skipper Dennis Davern set off for a weekend-long jaunt on the couple's yacht, the Splendour, just after Thanksgiving 1981. At the end of the trip, only 3 of the 4 guests on the Splendour would return home alive.

What really happened the fateful night that Natalie Wood supposedly drowned off the California coast? Was it simply a terrible accident, as ruled in the coroner's initial report, or something much more insidious? And why is the famous "Number 2" from the Austin Powers film series the LA police department's number 1 suspect?

We tackle all the stories, theories, and more for a drama-packed 1 year anniversary episode!

Ep. 49: Henry VIII - Portrait of a Serial Killer

Ep. 49: Henry VIII - Portrait of a Serial Killer

King Henry VIII. Beheader of wives. Noted fat guy. Lover of turkey legs.

Henry the 8th has become a punch line, known for his break with the Roman Catholic Church over his obsession with Anne Boleyn and gradual decay into a stinking, ulcerating laughingstock by the time of his death at 55 in 1547. But Henry VIII wasn't just a big goofus...he also exhibited classic signs of psychopathy, narcissism, and traits of being a serial killer. One that didn't get his own hands dirty, of course, but a killer all the same.

The clergy, his wives, rebels and former friends and mentors: no one was safe from Henry's order of a falling axe and a missing head. If you stood in his way, it didn't matter if you were his lover or God Himself...Henry's word was gospel, and nothing - and no one - else mattered.

Join us to dissect the mind of this cold-hearted killer, one whose hot-blooded decisions changed the Tudor dynasty - and England itself - forever.

Ep. 47: Haunted Theaters

Theaters are places of intense emotion - the laughter of a hilarious comedy, the love of a romantic musical, the tears of an affecting tragedy. It's no wonder that these magnets for, well, drama, tend to be some of the most haunted places in the world.

From the spectral figures of the Great White Way to the site of an American president's final moments, to the home of the Phantom himself in Paris and one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the world in London, we take a field trip to a handful of the most haunted theaters across the globe. Was The Phantom of the Opera based on a real theater ghost? Did David Belasco return to the Broadway theater bearing his name...after his death? Does John Wilkes Booth still tread the boards at the location of his greatest creative successes...and most horrific acts?

We explore all these dramaturgical legends...and more!

Ep. 45: Satanic Panic, Pt. 3 - The West Memphis Three

For part 3 in our tour of Satanic hysteria, it's 1993 and the ritual abuse panic of the '80s is coughing its last gasp in Arkansas!

Faced with the horrific murder of three young boys, West Memphis law enforcement, media and the community at large pointed the finger at three misfit, somewhat delinquent teenagers - Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jesse Misskelley. When one of the suspects confessed to the murders, it was only the beginning of the story.

Sean takes us through the facts of the case, the trial, and 18 years of legal battles and celebrity concerts. Along the way, evidence is uncovered, colorful characters are badly impersonated, and we ultimately face the question: Can it really be this easy to get convicted of murder?

Ep. 44: Satanic Panic, Pt. 2 - Dungeons & Dragons & Heavy Metal (w/ Nick Salese)

Ep. 44: Satanic Panic, Pt. 2 - Dungeons & Dragons & Heavy Metal (w/ Nick Salese)

Let the panic continue! Last week we showed you the origins of the 1980s Satanic Panic within a rash of alleged Satanic sex rituals at daycare centers. This week, Unloaded Questions co-host and our actual D&D Dungeon Master Nick Salese joins us in the role of resident D&D expert as we trace the Satanic Panic's spread to point fingers at all corners of popular culture - including the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.

Is TSR's 1974 hit roleplaying game a recruiting tool for Satanic witch-cults? A gateway to genuine magic ritual and power, at the cost of your soul? No - but it might give you hours of entertainment, at the cost of eternal celibacy.

We ALSO scratch the surface of the media blame put onto heavy metal music, including one very awkward (and hilarious) interview with the Prince of Darkness himself...Ozzy Osbourne!

You can find Nick at his podcast Unloaded Questions on the Longboi Media Network and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Ep. 42: Hysterias!

Ep. 42: Hysterias!

Throughout the many years humans have been on this Earth, we've always been prone to one problem (among many): mass hysterias.

Mass hysterias are sociological and psychological phenomena that transmit collective illusions of threats (whether real or imaginary) through a population and society as a result of rumors and fear. Basically--a shared bout of insanity, usually centered around one thing.

In this episode Carrie takes us through 4 of the most confounding historical hysteria cases around the world, including:

...The 1518 Dancing Plague, where 400+ townsfolk danced, danced, danced until they died (?)

...The Spring-Heeled Jack Paranoia, when 1800s London was haunted by a supernatural attacker

...The Mad Gasser of Mattoon Panic, a conspiracy from the 1940s where residents of the town of Mattoon IL were convinced they were being anesthetized by a phantom trickster

...And the 2016 Clown Sightings Craze, when people around America and the globe started seeing creepy clowns everywhere they looked!

What causes a mass hysteria? Why and how do they spread even in such bizarre cases as these? And what madness will be next? Dive into these hysterias throughout history to find out!

Ep. 41: Gettysburg Ghosts (w/ Paul Ferrante)

Ep. 41: Gettysburg Ghosts (w/ Paul Ferrante)

It's our very first guest star episode!

On this ep, Paul Ferrante - author of the "T.J. Jackson Mystery" paranormal YA series and dad/dad-in-law to our very own Carrie and Sean - stops by to talk ghosts. The ghosts of Gettysburg, PA, that is!

The Battle of Gettysburg was not only the bloodiest battle of the entire American Civil War, but the bloodiest battle ever fought on U.S. soil. It seems the spirits of many of those lost between July 1st and 3rd, 1863 never left...and still haunt the streets, homes, and fields of Gettysburg to this day.

From soldiers who have never left their posts, to haunted museums, inns, and restaurants, to one of the most paranormally active college campuses in the entire world, we take a tour through some of the most haunted places in Gettysburg with an author that used these legends as inspiration for his first novel, Last Ghost at Gettysburg. We ALSO get a glimpse into the spook-tastic childhood and upbringing that made Carrie so, uh, unique!

You can find Paul Ferrante at paulferranteauthor.com, at Amazon, on Facebook, and in person at ParaConn with us July 24-25 in Ansonia, CT!

Ep. 39: The Disappearance of Lisanne Froon & Kris Kremers

Ep. 39: The Disappearance of Lisanne Froon & Kris Kremers

While hiking the Pianista trail near Boquete, Panama in April 2014, Dutch tourists Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers vanished, seemingly without a trace. Searches by local and Dutch authorities turned up nothing, and hope began to fade that the girls would ever be found. Until June, when Lisanne's backpack was uncovered, containing a working camera, the girls' cell phones...and a lot of questions.

After this, some remains of Froon and Kremers were sadly discovered along the Culebra river, but to some, the remains didn't answer the mystery of what exactly happened to Lisanne and Kris.

How did the girls get lost on a seemingly well-marked, well-traveled trail? Why did a local guide tell authorities that he was scheduled to take the girls on the Pianista trail April 2nd...the day after they walked it themselves? Did something tragic happen to Lisanne, Kris, or both, prompting a series of emergency calls from their phones that never connected to cell reception? What is up with the eerie nighttime photos found on Lisanne's camera? Did the girls succumb to an accident, the elements...or foul play?

We try to cover all the theories, and put forth some of our own. Hopefully you'll find we've tackled this case respectfully--our thoughts are with the Froon and Kremers families.

Ep. 38: The Dark Side of Disney

Walt Disney built an empire on family-friendly entertainment that’s grown into a modern titan of the industry - and today we’re climbing all over its seamy underbelly. Gross!

Sean zig-zags us through rumors about Walt Disney’s involvement with Nazis, the FBI and cryogenic freezers, before tackling the most storied spirits of Disneyland in a whirlwind ghost tour around the original Magic Kingdom.

He’s still Sean, so we also detour into tangents on the House Un-American Activities Committee and the origins of Splash Mountain. Zip-a-dee-doo-dah!

Ep. 37: The "Crying Boy" Curse

Ep. 37: The "Crying Boy" Curse

In 1985, U.K. tabloid The Sun started a frenzy of fear when they published a series of articles about a cursed mass-produced painting - dubbed "The Crying Boy" - that had been found at the sites of dozens of house fires. In each of these instances, the story was the same: families had purchased the painting, displayed it, their home had gone up in flames, and the painting itself mysteriously remained unscathed, even if the entire house around it was gutted. That was enough for The Sun...the "Crying Boy Curse" was born.

But WHY was this painting supposedly cursed? Who was the artist behind it? Was it painted with malicious intent? And why in the WORLD would so many Europeans want to proudly display the image of a weeping toddler on their wall??

We try to find some answers to this very strange mystery...and perhaps find even more questions.

Ep. 34: The Lost Cosmonauts

Turin, Italy. 1960.

Two enterprising young brothers have rigged up their own radio equipment to listen in on the Soviet Russian unmanned rocket launches during the Cold War Space Race. But they pick up something they never expected...something the Soviets never thought would be uncovered. A voice, in Russian, begging for help as their space craft goes up in flames. And the voice...is coming from space.

Did the Soviet Union cover up the deaths of multiple cosmonauts during their race to beat America to getting a man into orbit? Did the Judica-Cordiglia brothers manage to record these secret tragedies from their rinky-dink radio shack in Italy? And is there any proof that, perhaps, there are dead Soviet cosmonauts up in space to this day...floating into infinity?

Join us for this truly chilling bit of history conspiracy!

This week, Sean takes us through the twisted tale of depressive serial killer nurse Charles Cullen.

Cullen confessed to killing "around" 40 patients over 16 years at 7 different hospitals before he was arrested in 2003. Some say he may even have killed as many as 300.

What drove this mild-mannered healthcare worker to kill? And how did the healthcare system let him keep doing it for 16 years?! Answers lie within.

Ep. 29: Renaissance Poisons & Hygienic Horrors

Ep. 29: Renaissance Poisons & Hygienic Horrors

The Renaissance was a time of enlightenment, opulence, and all-around cultural rebirth. However, that’s not all it was. It was also a time of poisonous murders, toxic cosmetics, and hygienic horrors bad enough to make your hair stand on end…or maybe that was just all the grease.

You might not want to time travel to this era no matter how big of a Renaissance royalty fan you were…because you would be faced with possible death from poisoning, lead and mercury based makeup, or just the general disgusting atmosphere of palaces full to the brim with gold, jewels, and human dookie.

Instead of hopping in your Delorean, join Carrie as she recounts for Sean the poisons and hygienic horrors that made the Renaissance one of the deadliest times to be alive - even and maybe especially if you were wealthy, powerful, and royal.

Ep. 27: Is Elvis Alive?

The King isn't dead. At least, that's what some people think.

Elvis Presley died on August 16th, 1977, after a myriad of health problems culminating in cardiac arrest. Or...did he?

Some fans posit that the King of Rock 'n Roll actually faked his own death with funeral and all to get away from the fame, his debts, and maybe even Mafia threats.

But did Elvis Presley really hoax his death? If so, how? Why? And how did this legend get started in the first place? Did Elvis really leave the building?

Thanks to our Patrons over on Patreon for voting on this topic (join 'em at patreon.com/aintitscary!) and the fabulous STATIC ERA RECORDS for sponsoring this episode - find them at www.staticerarecords.com!

The King is dead - long live the King.

Ep. 25: The Kennedy Curse & the Chappaquiddick Incident

Ep. 25: The Kennedy Curse & the Chappaquiddick Incident

Is it possible for a whole family to be cursed?

Some people think so. In fact, there's one particular family in United States history many have asserted IS the victim of a curse - the Kennedys.

From political assassinations to plane crashes to tragic accidents and even murder investigations, the Kennedys have lived under a dark cloud since the mid-20th century. Though blessed with wealth, power, privilege, good looks, and charm, death and calamity has never been far behind this American political dynasty. From the public killing of President John F. Kennedy Jr. to the plane crash death of his son JFK Jr., the Kennedys have seen enough darkness for some to claim they are "cursed". But is this true? And if so, where did the curse originate?

Carrie takes us through the events spanning the curse and dives particularly deeply into a very grey area in the Kennedy timeline - the Chappaquiddick Incident, a 1969 car accident that left one woman dead and the driver, Ted Kennedy, wondering "whether some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys."

Ep. 24: The Betty & Barney Hill Abduction

Ep. 24: The Betty & Barney Hill Abduction

Let's go back to 1961 for the first major UFO abduction story in American history - the Betty & Barney Hill Incident!

During a dark night in rural New Hampshire, Betty & Barney Hill (and their pet dachshund, Delsey) were coming back home from a weekend trip in Canada when they spotted a strange unidentified aircraft moving bizarrely in the sky. Then it began to follow their car.

Once they finally got home, they realized they had lost 2-3 hours of time that they couldn't remember, with their trip taking almost double the time they had expected it to. Betty began having strange dreams about alien abduction, and Barney became more and more disturbed by the missing time. Eventually, Betty and Barney went to a hypnotherapist to recover their lost memories...and that's when the real strangeness started.

Were Betty & Barney Hill really abducted by aliens in the New Hampshire countryside? Or did they experience some sort of shared madness - a folie a deux?

Ep. 23: The Keddie Cabin Murders

Ep. 23: The Keddie Cabin Murders

April 12, 1981. Keddie, California.

Sue Sharp, her teenage son John, and his friend Dana Wingate are found brutally murdered in the Sharp family's cabin at Keddie Resort in the Sierra Nevada. 12-year-old Tina Sharp is missing. And, shockingly, the youngest children - Rick Sharp, Greg Sharp, and Justin Smartt - are found alive, sleeping peacefully in the room next door.

Who killed Sue, John, and Dana? Why was there so much violence on the scene? Where was Tina? And why were the young boys left alive?

Carrie takes us through all the known parts of the story, from when the Sharps moved to Keddie to the horrifying massacre in Cabin 28, and then brings us to the theories around who may have committed this atrocious crime.

As of February 2021, the Keddie Cabin Murders case is still officially unsolved.

Ep. 22: Haunted Dolls

Ep. 22: Haunted Dolls

Remember the comfort a childhood stuffed toy brought? Carrying it around everywhere, taking care of it, cuddling it like your own baby? Something about dolls has brought parental instincts out of children since ancient times. But what happens when that relationship goes wrong? What happens when that DOLL goes wrong?

In this episode we're exploring 3 stories of haunted dolls: Annabelle, the famous possessed Raggedy Ann doll with her own Warrens-adjacent horror movie franchise; Robert, the creepy German jester dummy that became the singular infatuation of one Key West painter and the inspiration for Chucky in the 'Child's Play' films; and the Isla de las Muñecas, a Mexican island FULL of purportedly haunted dolls...and the lingering spirit of the man whose lifetime obsession with a young girl's death created the island itself.

Ep. 21: Deadly Illusions

Ep. 21: Deadly Illusions

Magic acts are all about doing extraordinary things with a wink and a nod to the audience, letting them know that the unbelievable is, indeed, possible. The audience is held spellbound by the illusion, yet always with the knowledge that death will be defied, they will be captivated, and the magician in question will live to trick another day.

But what if they...don't? What if the illusion goes wrong?

In this episode Sean takes us through stories where death was NOT defied, and illusion performances went horribly wrong. From the bullet catch that went sideways for Chung Ling Soo to the fiery demise of The Great Lafayette to the mysterious end of Harry Houdini, we discuss magic acts that ended not with a bang, but with a whimper.
