#24 The Shadow of the Volksmoeder in Children’s Games

In this episode, we catch up with Nicolene on her MA Theatre and Performance practice-based research journey. As you will hear, Nicolene has a lot to say and is very passionate about this topic, she asked that we disclaim that the speed at which she speaks might give you a little anxiety, so slow us down, pause, and breathe if necessary. Expect discussions on Afrikanerdom, Whiteness, Christi van der Westhuizen's work on the enclaves, the fool, playing games, and so much more academic juiciness.

#23 Maak Spasie vir Organisasie with Roux Vosloo

Unlike the title of this episode suggests, we did not organize ourselves in preparation for this conversation. Sometimes "airing it" means researching and writing down a structure (most of the time we do that) - other times it means lying around with friends and allowing our minds to run free. In this episode, we start by making sense and ... then later not so much ... enjoy this goofy, Afrikaans, ramble! And happy Silly Season!

#22 Guilty pleasures with Prof. Stella Viljoen

We sat down with Prof. Stella Viljoen to talk about guilty pleasures. What makes something a guilty pleasure? Why do we, as feminists, love a stukkie rom-com? In this informal and juicy episode, we consider guilty pleasure from a cultural studies perspective and share some of our guilty pleasures - like regency romance novels, period dramas, and the Kardashians. And don’t forget the mice pies!

#21 Questioning the Canon, Authorship, and complex Power Couples

#21 Questioning the Canon, Authorship, and complex Power Couples

The Western art and philosophy canon has been so ingrained into most of the world that it seems to be this glorious record of groundbreaking art that is set in stone. However, there are so many accounts of women creatives influencing the trajectory of culture that are not commonly acknowledged in this historical timeline. In today’s episode, we bring you stories of a few complicated creative power couples. We talk about authorship, domesticity vs. career, as well as the influence of name-dropping on the perpetual telling of the same old stories.

#20 Pondering Productivity: From Work Ethic to Worth Ethic

#20 Pondering Productivity: From Work Ethic to Worth Ethic

Nicolene and Jana meet again in the 'genot grot' to talk about work, productivity, and the hustle in general. They recall family narratives about manual labour and a perceived sense of purpose and superiority that come from always being busy and doing something. Why is it so hard to do nothing? What does one do when you do nothing? In pondering these questions, this episode addresses topics about boredom, creativity, morning rituals, corporate culture, and rest as resistance.

#19 Making sense of The Grid in Art and Feminist Geography

#19 Making sense of The Grid in Art and Feminist Geography

In this episode Nicolene and Jana both need to talk through the research they are doing at the moment.

Nicolene discusses her constant fascination with the grid in her painting works and wonders how it will morph to fit with what she is making now. From a data log to a meditation medium and now a tool to speak about political identity, the grid seems to follow her everywhere.

How do we recognise the geographic realities that are so often positioned “off the grid”?

Jana airs out some of her current research on anticolonial and feminist geography. She draws on Sylvia Wynter’s work on humanism to explore connections between philosophy, place-making, and being human.

#18 Talking about "the talk": the birds, the bees and the limits of sex education

In this raw and unfiltered episode, Nicolene and Jana talk about their experiences with sex education in South Africa. They start by reflecting on shocking Sunday school lessons and the awkward conversations about sex in their formative years. Then they turn to contemporary thinkers who expose the limits of sex education today, like relationship-guru Esther Perel and the feminist philosopher Amia Srinivasan.

Despite wanting to say A LOT more, especially about popular culture and sex in the Afrikaner context, the conversation had to end abruptly. Let us know if you want a follow-up chat!

Here are some of the resources mentioned in our conversation:

#17 BONUS - Confessions at ‘That White Wedding’: A live recording in collaboration with _That Eclectic _

We've been talking about marriage and wedding rituals on Air It over the past few months. Our conversations were inspired by the performance art piece Lilith & Lesbet Trou, a collaboration between Nicolene Burger and Mandri Sutherland. Now in the third part of this series on white weddings, we do something completely new to Air It podcast. The That Eclectic team listened to our previous episodes and invited Mandri, Nicolene and Air It to collaborate with them on an event called, That White Wedding. A huge team of artists created an extended version of Lilith & Lesbet Trou and Air It was there to record the reflections of the guests afterwards. We bring you a mashup of confessions from this interesting co-creation.

#16 From strolling to scrolling: Exploring the flâneuse in cyberspace ft. Mikhaila Coerecius

Air it sat down with Mikhaila Coerecius to discuss how womxn can “be” in public and online spaces.
In the beginning of this episode, you will hear us unloading many personal experiences of how being in public spaces are complicated, especially as womxn. We think about walking, safety, selfies, access, race, the gaze, and class.
Through the lens of her Masters outputs and research on the flâneuse, Mikhaila guides us to consider new ways for womxn to access, experience, and embody public spaces.
Listen all the way to the end as she draws fascinating connections between the dynamics of physical public spaces vs. the virtual public space. #15 What's hiding in the bush? Untangling body hair norms.

Air It sat down for another impromptu conversation where Nicolene & Jana tried to unpick and untangle body hair norms. We took a broad approach and discussed everything from grooming, bolding and shaving to shaming, policing and internalised patriarchy. In the end, we can't help but wonder: how have we been conditioned to hold certain body hair beliefs?  If you haven't subscribed to our podcast yet, please do so. #13 Remembering Gandhi and the force of non-violence ft. Prof. Louise du Toit

#13 Remembering Gandhi and the force of non-violence ft. Prof. Louise du Toit

In episode 13, we chat with Jana's supervisor, Prof. Louise du Toit about her current research on Mahatma Gandhi and non-violent protests in South Africa today. You can look forward to discussions about Gandhi's spiritual ontology, a deep dive into aggressive non-violence, and how we can rethink self-care and discipline within our current political landscape. This episode was recorded a few weeks before the events that transpired in KZN & Gauteng, but we believe that it can still offer some relevant insights.

More about our guest:  Louise du Toit is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Her main research interests include a wide range of themes within feminist philosophy, especially in the European and African traditions. She is interested in sexual violence, Critical Theory, political philosophy, hermeneutics, philosophy and literature, phenomenology, legal philosophy, environmental philosophy and feminist philosophy of religion. She is the author of A Philosophical Investigation of Rape: the making and unmaking of the feminine self (Routledge, 2009) and is currently working on a second monograph with the title Sexual Violence and Political Transition. She was also guest editor of ‘Rape and Its Meaning/s’, a special edition of Philosophical Papers, November 2009. She is on the editorial board of Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology, De Uil van Minerva and of Gender Questions. She is currently involved in several international research collaborations with themes including ”Towards a Political Ontology of Violence: reality, image and perception’ (Leiden University), ‘Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict’ (Hamburg Institute for Social Research), ‘Boundaries and Legal Authority in a Global Context’ (Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study), and ‘African Philosophy and Literature’ (Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program).

#12 (part II) Performance art, Acting and Alternative Wedding Rituals ft. Mandri Sutherland

#12 (part II) Performance art, Acting and Alternative Wedding Rituals ft. Mandri Sutherland

Two artists meet on social media and come together to investigate and unpick their Afrikaner culture on the topic of getting married. In this episode, Jana asks Nicolene Burger (Air It co-host) and Mandri Sutherland questions about their multidisciplinary performance, “Lilith & Lesbet Trou”. Beyond the actual performance piece, they also look at topics such as Live art vs. theatre; audience improv vs. zoom engagements; intimate gathering vs. large scale support and so much more behind the scenes of the making of an artwork. Strap yourself in for a very personal and casual conversation about art and what it means to be an artist in 2021.

About our guest: Mandri Sutherland is an actress, voice- and performance artist living in Cape Town. She received her BA (Drama) degree from Stellenbosch University in 2015.

Mandri believes in tapping into the rhythm of everyday life and from these somewhat mundane events, she draws inspiration and joy for her own performances. Her performances could be seen as explorations of personal projections, struggles, and discoveries.

#12 (part I) 'Dis jou dag': Reflections on White Afrikaner Wedding Rituals

Inspired by a private performance Nicolene will be doing with Mandri Sutherland in mid-June, Jana and Nicolene finally decided to tackle a topic that is very personal and controversial in their communities: getting married! They have both attended many (Afrikaner) White weddings and decided to reflect in this episode about the rituals, value, consumerism, and expectation connected to tying the knot in their culture. Expect many personal stories and a deeply vulnerable unpacking of what they feel the wedding ceremony represents.

#11 How mugs can bring you happiness ft. Georgie Visser

#11 How mugs can bring you happiness ft. Georgie Visser

This “gezellige” conversation with Georgie Visser, which took place in Fish Hoek on Moroccan scatter pillows (with tea and chocolate chip cookies), aims to inspire you to relate consciously to the spaces and objects around you. We touch on the Danish concept of Hygge, The Art of Happiness by Alain de Botton, and how humans tend to desire objects that reflect what we lack. We share many personal stories about the memories, meanings, and morals inscribed in the items we place in our homes. Stay tuned to hear why we each favour certain mugs, and how they contribute to our happiness.

More about our guest: Georgie is a brand strategist, philosophy enthusiast, and design lover (and amazing singer). Jana and Nicolene met Georgie in the Visual Studies lecture hall at Stellenbosch where they quickly started musing over similar interests. Georgie’s personal space and the social spaces she creates speak to her spatial sensibility and design/ curation soft skills. From this love and fascination with what our surroundings and the objects we value communicate to others, she is now pursuing a Masters in contextual design. Hear her speak about why we are drawn to certain design elements, what designing for the senses entails, as well as the significance of conscious design.

#10 Becoming Cyborg: Xenofeminism and the Gender Abolition Movement ft. Paul Joubert

Pronouns, Xenofeminism, cyborgs, binaries, and the limits of language. These are but a few touch-points in our dense conversation vir Paul Joubert about how we can make gender irrelevant.
In this episode we attempt to dismantle gender by turning it in every direction… concluding that it might just be a thin-membraned sphere. Can we get any more ambiguous than that? Just wait until you listen to episode 10.
Paul is currently studying Philosophy and Sociology at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He is an administrator and writer for iLizwi, was the 2020 Education Executive of QueerUS and is a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society South Africa.

#8 Finding Solace: Home, Nostalgia and the Environment ft. Roux Vosloo

#8 Finding Solace: Home, Nostalgia and the Environment ft. Roux Vosloo

In season one of Air It, we touched on many current topics that are widely debated around the world. But in the season finale, we look at what might be the most pressing challenge humanity is facing collectively at the moment: climate change. Roux Vosloo, master's student in English Studies, writer, and Jana's brother, guides us into a deep and profound conversation about what constitutes home, how embracing solastalgic feelings can lead to loving our environment (solophilia) and the power of emotion to move us to transformative action.

In episode 8 we do an informal film analysis of 'Mother!', by Darren Aronofsky, as a perfect representation of the nauseating feeling of solastalgia- an emotion Roux argues we are avoiding by obsessing over the perfection of our houses, and by indulging in consumer behaviour. In 2019 it became a global discussion that dealing with climate change has become unavoidable, yet chaotic global politics, a pandemic, and a year later we are still not on the same page as to how much our societies need to change for 'nature' to be restored. It is therefore urgent that we openly and honestly engage with the future of our habitat. This emotional and strangely spiritual conversation is one way we are contributing.

#7 Contemplating Consciousness, AI Ethics and Sexbots ft. Fabio Tollon

#7 Contemplating Consciousness, AI Ethics and Sexbots ft. Fabio Tollon

In this episode, we discussed the philosophical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for our broader understanding of consciousness with our guest, Fabio Tollon – who is a philosopher of technology.   For our cultural text, we analysed the sci-fi film Ex Machina (2014) to draw out themes surrounding creation, embodiment, programming gender and machine ethics. Who knows what our future holds, but this conversation bringing together ideas about sexbots, automatic art, nuclear weapons and human desire illustrates just how important it is to critically consider our collective destiny.

Our guest, Fabio Tollon:

"I am a philosopher of technology. I believe that the development of AI, as a nascent and disruptive technology, will fundamentally change our moral landscape. It is therefore essential that we have a robust meta-ethical grounding in our approach to the ethics of AI. Without rigorous conceptual apparatus we will be lost in our ethical analysis of these emergent and ubiquitous artificial systems."

#6 Queering Religion & Spirituality ft. Ashwin Afrikanus Thyssen

#6 Queering Religion & Spirituality ft. Ashwin Afrikanus Thyssen

In this cheerful, yet critical episode, we asked the question: what does it mean to queer religion and/or spirituality? Together with our phenomenal guest, Ashwin Afrikanus Thyssen, we delved into the various ways in which queer theory can help us to broaden our understanding of the concept of God, the church, and spiritual practice in general.  Amongst many things, we spoke about the pervasive influence of the western canon (i.e. white Jesus), notions of shame and the church, the tension between queer utopia/dystopia, and why Jesus would probably be a transgender black womxn today. Hit play and let us know what you think!

Ashwin Afrikanus Thyssen is a theologian and PhD candidate, studying at Stellenbosch University.  He identifies as ontologically black, existentially queer and spiritually Christian. Ashwin is also an active member of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa.

#5 Destabilising White Afrikaner Femininity ft. Azille Coetzee

#5 Destabilising White Afrikaner Femininity ft. Azille Coetzee

In this episode, feminist philosopher and writer, Azille Coetzee helps us to think through White Afrikaner Femininity and how the constructs set up before and during Apartheid around this identity has persisted post-Apartheid. We touch on the complicated colonial history of South Africa, gender roles, class enclaves, Afrikaner patriarchy and how all of this is related to the politics of the everyday. We read poems by Antjie Krog and Ronelda Kamfer, and even drew on examples from the household magazine, Sarie. We shared our personal experiences as white Afrikaans women, and considered how this heteronormative identity is still present in our private homes today.  This conversation stimulated questions around alternative ways of being, and how to subvert outdated ideas protected by private Afrikaner spaces.

Azille Coetzee is the writer of In My Vel: ‘n Reis (2019), a memoir exploring white Afrikaner identity, national belonging, immigration and love. She is a postdoctoral researcher at the South African Research Chair for Gender Politics, Stellenbosch University. She recently completed a PhD at the Vrije University of Amsterdam and Stellenbosch University. In her work she explores the relationship between gender and race in colonial logic, and the role of gender liberation in the project of decolonisation. Her research is published in various international feminist journals and she often writes for local South African publications like Vrye Weekblad, Litnet and Rapport.

#4 Airing Out the Complexities Surrounding "Allyship"

#4 Airing Out the Complexities Surrounding "Allyship"

In this impromptu episode, we talk about the concept of "allyship". We discuss why "6 easy steps on how to be a good ally" might not be enough and delved a little deeper into some of the assumptions regarding the definition of allyship. Our conversation also took a turn towards the notion of "performative allyship", the infamous "black block" example, and social justice activism on social media.  As a cultural text, we briefly explored the "human shield" that was formed during #FeesMustFall as a perceived example of "allyship" in South Africa.

This episode was recorded as an informal conversation between two white women/ friends. While anyone is welcome to listen, we specifically aim this conversation towards people within a privileged position who might also benefit from pondering the concept of "allyship" more extensively. This episode is also informed by  Jana's reflections on her academic research and master's thesis that is on the topic of allyship.

#3 Reflections on Discipline, Power and Design within South African Education Spaces ft. Olivia Bevan

#3 Reflections on Discipline, Power and Design within South African Education Spaces ft. Olivia Bevan

In our third episode, we welcome our very first guest, Olivia Bevan, to discuss how the concepts of design, space, and power can help us to rethink the South African education system. With the phased reopening of schools in South Africa following the Covid-19 lockdown, Oliva provides some valuable insights, as an art teacher, on the role of discipline and design as a barrier for learning. By contrasting a series of visual and conceptual examples such as the Panopticon and the Rorke's Drift school in South Africa, we were able to reflect and brainstorm together on the ways in which power can be used more productively to promote curious and compassionate learning. We covered a whole spectrum of fun examples to help us "air out" this conversation, so if you would like to hear more about how the philosopher Michel Foucault wants to eroticise knowledge, how Cas Holman's "design for play" can prevent "closed ideas" or how printmaking can serve as a powerful symbol for process work, hit play and imagine with us!

More details about our guest:

Olivia Bevan is a Cape Town based artist, currently working as a teacher. She asks this of the teaching trade: Where do you even begin to envisage an education that is not enclosed by barriers? How can creative learning be accessible and what could this look like? And speculates that printmaking can possibly afford some insight as to how to change our systems to allow for more flexibility:

“Printmaking allows for a removal from the artist and their mark in varying degrees and with this removal from direct mark making, endless discoveries can be made.  Printmaking or methods of transference enable a process-based learning that is creative and adaptable to individuals. This type of creative skill and process learning creates space that leads to creative thinking."

#2 Art & Philosophy in Times of Crisis: Penny Siopis, Pretty Face Masks and the Problem of Proximity

#2 Art & Philosophy in Times of Crisis: Penny Siopis, Pretty Face Masks and the Problem of Proximity

In this episode Nicolene and Jana unpack the general questions around the relevance of art and philosophy and investigate the important role these disciplines can play in times of crisis. Specifically considering COVID-19 and its impact on society, Jana and Nicolene draw on the historical reliability of artistic and philosophical practices and unpack how these modes of thinking can help with “making real” and move people into action. Touching on abject theory, masking, and humans’ perpetual vulnerability our hosts bring the hard questions about mortality and the body closer in this discussion of Penny Siopis’ The Shame Series.

#1 Interviewing Ourselves: Dirty Laundry, Embodied Protest and Healing Art

#1 Interviewing Ourselves: Dirty Laundry, Embodied Protest and Healing Art

In this episode Nicolene and Jana air their intentions behind starting a podcast and introduce their respective research lenses. They touch on embodied protest as an undeniable part of their studies, creativity, and how it is linked to happiness and freedom, and the interesting relationship between what is deemed private and what is deemed public. Very evident in this conversation is our hosts’ passions for their research and their conviction that more art and philosophy would make the world a better place.
