By Hoot n Waddle

Album Infinitum is a music appreciation podcast hosted by Jared Duran (Limited Engagement, What the Fork?, Hoot n Review), that focuses on one artist and explores that artist's catalog album by album. Each episode features a discussion with a guest that explores not only the album itself, but its place in music history as well as the culture of the time it was originally released. This is a deep dive.

AI 27 - The Knowledge

AI 27 - The Knowledge

This week, we wrap up the Squeeze discography with their 2017 album, The Knowledge. On this outing, the band pushes the excitement, inventiveness, and energy of Cradle to the Grave up to 11. When it hits, it really hits ("Innocence in Paradise," "Departure Lounge," "Patchouli"), but it's by no means perfect ("A&E," "Rough Ride"). Also, still no Difford lead vocal--what's up with that? Sitting in the guest host chair this week, Paul Mosier. Talking to Paul is always a trip. You never know where the conversation is going to go, and it's fantastic. Paul is the author of a number of books, including three middle grade novels for HarperCollins: Train I Ride, Echo's Sister, and Summer and July (forthcoming). Be sure to check out Paul's work and follow him on social media: http://bit.ly/2JK2MYu (Paul's HarperCollins page) https://novelistpaulmosier.wordpress.com/ @mosier_paul on Twitter As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. Squeeze is indeed very active, recording and touring both as a band, and Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford with their respective solo endeavors--see them in whatever capacity you're able. Additionally, keep up to date on all their latest doings at http://www.squeezeofficial.com/ and through their social media (@squeezeogram on, appropriately, Instagram and @squeezeofficial on Twitter).

AI 26 - Cradle to the Grave

On deck for this week's episode, the first Squeeze album of all new material after a 17 year period, Cradle to the Grave, and what an album it is! So much energy! Great tunes! The band sounds vibrant, refreshed, and like they're enjoying what they're doing. Sitting in the co-host chair for this discussion is writer and What the Fork? co-host, Jason Keil. No, you're not reading that wrong, Jason is back--it only seemed fair to have him back to talk about a better album than Domino. Be sure to check out Jason's work in PHOENIX Magazine, The New Times, and on his website: Twitter and Instagram: @jasonekeil http://www.jasonkeil.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. AI 25 - Domino

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1998 album, Domino. Generally regarded as a low point for the band, it's a personal favorite due to it being the release the band was touring behind when I first saw them in 1999. It was also their last album of new material for 17 years. Sitting in the co-host chair for this discussion is writer and What the Fork? co-host, Jason Keil. AI 24 - Ridiculous

AI 24 - Ridiculous

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1995 album, Ridiculous. Released at the height of britpop, Squeeze's label saddled them with the slogan "The godfathers of britpop" and pushed Heaven Knows--perhaps one of their worst singles--into the upper echelons of the charts. The album is the band's most stylistically diverse, and as the conversation with guest host Tyler Button (founder and writer behind Tapestry Comics) points out, the experimentalism of the album is not always entirely successful. There are some definite highlights here, though, including Daphne, Electric Trains, Fingertips, and more. Check out the cool work Tyler's doing over at Tapestry! https://www.tapestrycomics.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. AI 23 - Some Fantastic Place

AI 23 - Some Fantastic Place

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1993 album, Some Fantastic Place. Back on A&M records, with their first album since Chris Difford  bugged out and got sober, the band sounds vibrant, reinvigorated--hopeful even. SFP features some of their best songs, including Third Rail, the title track, It's Over, Jolly Comes Home, and the album closer, Pinocchio. The album also sees the increasingly prevalent lineup changes with the departure of Gilson Lavis from the drum chair, to be replaced by The Attractions' Pete Thomas, and the return of Paul Carrack on keys. Doug Bale is back in the co-host seat and enjoying Carrack's presence on the album. Check out Doug's work! https://instagram.com/dougbale https://society6.com/dougbale https://flightytronys.bandcamp.com/releases https://dougbalemergatron.bandcamp.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. AI 22 - Play

AI 22 - Play

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1991 album, Play--their only album for Reprise Records. Featuring the highlights Letting Go, The Day I Get Home, The Truth, and Walk a Straight Line, the album holds the distinction of being the last one prior to Chris Difford pursuing a life of sobriety. It strained the Difford and Tilbrook relationship even further, and continued to see the band's commercial success decline in the face of their more mature and arguably more artistically rewarding work. I primarily say arguably, because this week's co-host, artist and musician Doug Bale, argues otherwise. It's a fun conversation between two music lovers holding a difference of opinion. AI 21 - Frank

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1989 album, Frank. Arguably a stronger album than it's popular predecessor, the album marked a sharp decline in the band's commercial success and began a trend where Squeeze released some of its best albums out into an increasingly indifferent marketplace.  Returning as guest co-host for this episode is the fantastic Marc Oxborrow of The Haymarket Squares and The Blood Feud Family Singers--both of which will be sharing a bill with the Hot House Orchids and the Rae Lydia Duo at Last Exit Live on Friday, June 21st, and The Squares are headed out on tour this July, so be sure to check out their tour dates for more info. http://www.haymarketsquares.com/tour/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. AI 20 - Babylon and On

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's 1987 commercial peak, Babylon and On. Featuring the hits "Hourglass" and, unfortunately, "853-5937," Babylon and On marks the beginning of a turning point for Squeeze with career highlights such as "Tough Love" and "Footprints" showing that the Difford and Tilbrook could still write a hell of a song. The guest co-host for this episode is the fantastic Marc Oxborrow of The Haymarket Squares and The Blood Feud Family Singers--both of which will be sharing a bill with the Hot House Orchids and the Rae Lydia Duo at Last Exit Live on Friday, June 21st. https://www.facebook.com/events/306122460314357/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. AI 19 - Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti

On deck for this week's episode, Squeeze's difficult (for most people) 1985 reunion album, Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti. As the discussion with guest host Dan Hull reveals, however, there is a LOT to love about this album despite any flaws its very of-the-time production and the drug-induced mental states of Difford and Tilbrook may have saddled it with. Dan is a gifted storyteller who has a long history in the Phoenix storytelling community. He currently produces and co-hosts The Storyline SLAM, which takes place every month at The Newton, and you've got to check out Bad Buddhist, a film of his one man show of the same name. https://www.thestoryline.org/ https://badbuddhistmovie.com/ As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. On this edition of Album Infinitum, Ed Masley returns to discuss the last album of Squeeze Phase 1, Sweets From A Stranger, an uneven album that still manages to feature some of the best Squeeze songs of all time, including "When the Hangover Strikes," "Black Coffee in Bed," "The Elephant Ride," and more. AI 14 - Squeeze

And so it begins! Squeeze is absolutely one of the best bands of all time, whether you know it or not, and we kick things off with their stutter step of a start, the John Cale-produced eponymous debut (or U.K. Squeeze if you bought the album stateside in 1978). The album features one of the greatest singles of all time, "Take Me, I'm Yours," and gives an uneven first impression from there, though the Difford and Tilbrook songwriting partnership and trademark vocal dynamic flourish throughout. Joining this discussion is guest co-host Paul Mosier (@mosier_paul on Twitter), whose novels for middle grade readers--Train I Ride, Echos Sister, and the forthcoming Summer and July (2020)--are available from HarperCollins publishing at any fine book selling establishment. Continuing on down the discography of Aimee Mann, we arrive at her wonderful 2008 album, @#%&*! Smilers, which is perhaps the most musically buoyant in her catalog. Find Betsy on Facebook under The SunPunchers and Betsy Ganz Music, on Twitter at @TheSunPunchers, and check out http://thesunpunchers.com/. AI 01 - Aimee Mann's Whatever

AI 01 - Aimee Mann's Whatever

The first artist up for Album Infinitum is one of my very favorites, Aimee Mann. Her debut solo album, Whatever, was released in 1993, a full five years after the last ‘Til Tuesday album, Everything Is Different Now, and there’s a great article that Stereogum put up for 25th anniversary of Whatever where Doug Bleggi talks to Aimee Mann about the whole story behind the reason for that gap, which comes down to, surprise, surprise, record label politics. Although the album is generally well-regarded--Elvis Costello named it one of his 500 essential albums, it’s in the book 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die, Nick Hornby included the song “I’ve Had It” in his aptly titled Songbook, or 31 Songs for anyone in the UK--this is not my favorite Aimee Mann album. I think this is largely due to how dated the production sounds, which is a shame, because it’s predominantly produced by the great Jon Brion, whose work I love. Whatever does contain two of my favorite Aimee Mann songs, though, “Stupid Thing” and “4th of July.” Joining me for this discussion is my Hoot n Review co-host, writer, professor, and unabashed Wheel of Fortune enthusiast, Jenna Duncan (@jennaduncan2001). One of the main points of this podcast is to express not only a love of music, but a love for collecting music as well, and as such, I highly encourage listeners to go out and get copies of the albums discussed on this show. It shouldn’t be terribly hard to go out to your local record store and find a copy of Whatever, so go do it. I also encourage you to support the artists behind the music, so check out aimeemann.com and follow @aimeemann on Twitter.
