The Album Concept Hour

Courtney Love. A woman plagued by tragedy and misogyny, tabloid and conspiracy. She has been called a lot things over the years, some by friends, many by the media. She has had beefs with the likes of Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Gwen Stefani, and Tori Amos, to name a few. However, one thing is certain. She is a force to be reckoned with. Today we're discussing the album that came out less than a week after Kurt Cobain's tragic passing, and a few months before the passing of their own bassist, Kristen Pfaff. "Live Through This" has become infamous for the tragedy that surrounds it, as well as the prophetic nature of the lyrics, and became one of the most important albums of the 90's.

We're joined by one of my favorite Madison bands (although these days they're a Madison AND New York band), Damsel Trash!!! We have Emily Mills, who is also in Little Red Wolf and Line -- and Meghan Rose, Little Red Wolf alum and musical composer for such musicals as "Held" and "Xena: Warrior Musical"!!!

What's up everyone it's Nate here with our first episode of "The Concept", a rebranding of The Album Concept Hour, now with more personality and introducing our new correspondent Sam Bronn! Brad left us high and dry by staying out in LA, so now I can finally really start to clean up this disaster that he created. In keeping with the spirit of the album we're covering today we even sold all of Brad's things (sans the recording equipment) and put beans all up in the nooks and crannies of Brad's house--right where they don't belong. Laura Jane Grace originally pitched the concept for Transgender Dysphoria Blues as a fictional account of the experiences of a transgendered prostitute dealing with the various aspects of addiction and gender dysphoria. However, this was more than just a fictional tale to help her write, it was a way for her to start coming out as a trans person. What started as allegory became fact as she spent a few years transitioning into her new body and finding just the right bandmates to complete this gem of an album.

I know this album isn't incredibly popular, but it IS an amazing concept album. But I don't need to convince you because it's already got the seal of approval from the likes of Beastie Boys, De La Soul, and Ice Cube, to name a few. This is a band that created one of the greatest sunshine pop hits of the time, "Happy Together", and had the gall to just keep doing what they wanted, which was creating a strange, but extremely competent spoof album, lampooning all of the popular song tropes of the time. A few of their members, Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan, and Jim Pons even went on to contribute to Frank Zappa's legacy with the 1970-1971 lineup of The Mothers of Invention. In a pre-Weird Al Yankovic music landscape, the age of highly produced spoofdom was just beginning...

It's time to break out your eyeliner, squeeze into some skinny jeans, and dye your hair black, because this week we are diving into an emo masterpiece. In 2005, emo music was exploding into the airwaves and the bands were getting more and more creative with the genre. Sure, it all had a similarly macabre subject matter, but the stories they told were steeped in tragedy and romance, and as an emotion filled youth, they gave us ways to process our feelings. Understandably a lot of these artists gravitated towards stories that required more than a single track to tell, and a lot of them tried a shot at concept albums. Five months before Trainwreck came out, we heard Armor for Sleep's "What to Do When You are Dead?" (a guide to the afterlife) and then even My Chemical Romance gave it a try with The Black Parade the following year. It's no wonder that I started a podcast about concept albums... Anyways, Trainwreck is one of the true greats of emo concept albums and blows much of it's contemporaries out of the water. But be warned. This is a tragedy.

It's finally time... to talk about the beginning... of heavy metal. We've covered hair metal, glam metal, stoner/doom metal, metal-core, and "nu" metal, but... where did it all come from? The answer to this question is different depending on who you ask, but the first time it broke into the mainstream was undoubtedly with Black Sabbath. Their sped up blues, distortion, and horror imagery, mixed with a working man's skepticism towards the free love movement. They grew up in post war Birmingham and the positive sound and message of that music didn't really represent their experience. While they were initially trying to formulate their sound, bassist Geezer Butler infamously remarked that it was "strange that people spend so much money to see scary movies," and then I'm assuming a giant lightbulb appeared in a thought bubble over both of their heads... and "Black Sabbath" was born. First just a title for the "most evil song ever written" (according to Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford), and eventually the title and theme of the rest of their discography... Their first album (self-titled) began the march toward crunchier songwriting and their second, Paranoid, made it clear that it was just the beginning of a completely new rock movement.

We have a BRAND NEW season with BRAND NEW segments that will BLOW YOU AWAY!!! We start our with one of our TWO QUESTIONS before getting into the inaugural WIKI WIKI WIKI FACTS segment. We also spend quite a bit of time talking about Pink Floyd's "Obscured by Clouds", which has ironically been obscured by the rest of their discography (or at least eclipsed), and we dive into whatever information we were able to find about "La Vallee", the French film by Barbet Schroeder that the album was initially created to score. We might not know why there was a falling out between Pink Floyd and Barbet Schroeder, but what we DO KNOW is that this album belongs right up there with any other Pink Floyd album, even if it is sandwiched between the giants of "Meddle" and "Dark Side of the Moon".
