Providence Leftist Radio Podcast
By Providence Leftist Radio
Our goal is to act as an intersection for all the left leaning organizations, parties, and peoples in the Providence area. We want to bring a leftist perspective to community politics, while also creating a loudspeaker to promote community outreach initiatives.
We’re here to talk about Providence city council, school boards, municipal government, state house and senate representatives, judges, as well as gubernatorial politics. We want to hold these people accountable.
Providence Leftist Radio PodcastAug 01, 2021
PLR 42: Homelessness, The Fault Of The State
We are back after a hiatus! Crow and Buzzard talk about the homeless encampment that was at the state house, the administration lies about advocates wanting to keep people in camps meanwhile barely doing the bare minimum themselves.
PLR 41: Abuse Of Power W/ DARE Behind The Walls
Introducing another co-host! Emi of the Moonrakers joins in as we talk about police use of power, NSC-131 cowardly attempt at intimidation, John Depetro losing a fight to a lawnmower, and a negligent landlord using airBNB
Timestamp for the DARE section of the episode is at 33:00
Behind The Walls reveals the disturbing conditions inmates are facing within the Maximum Security Prison from painted over black mold to a scam being played by corrections officers.

PLR 40.5: PVD World Music w/ Chance
PVD World Music promotes traditional music and arts. Chance is an important staple of the Providence music scene, through PVD World Music he keeps traditional music alive by allowing the next generations to have indigenous knowledge that is within traditional music passed down to them.
Providence needed more space to be made for this music to continue, so that's exactly what he did. Listen to know more about his experiences and motivations!

PLR 40: Police Violence and Nazi Activity - There Is No Difference
From a brawl at the state house to the continued terror police and white supremacists bring to our streets. Very interesting to see Jeann Lugo, a providence police officer, at a rally he is against then end up swinging on his senate rival Jennifer Rourke. We also bring to attention how embarrassing it is for supposed activists to collude with bigots just cause they're mad Tiara Mack did a twerk video.
Featured music this week is 'This Machine Kills Gender Norms' - by Bubblegum Punk our very own co-host! Will this fairytale legislate your life?
https://bubblegumpunk.bandcamp.com/releases
PLR 39: Corporate Pride and Gun Legislation
How was your experience at RI Pride this year? While Pride was filled with weapons manufacturers and Dorito trucks people decided to boycott and protest the rainbow capitalist event. Local politicians who wish to disarm the marginalized with legislation can be seen alongside Amazon and Raytheon, what's up with that? We introduce our new co-host Hols of Bubblegum Punk!
PLR 38: Pride, Weed, and the Police
It's June again! Pride parade is coming up, but have RI organizers learned from their mistakes? Weed is legalized, giving police one less bogus reason to mess with civilians over it, bringing us one step closer to a better society. We also go over an incident where police arrested a 12 year old child and some talk about busking!
Local music for this weekend is provided by Dirt Devil who will be releasing a new music video soon, like the song listen to their other ones! https://dirtdevil.bandcamp.com/album/dirt-devil-lp
PLR 37.5: Guns w/ RIJBGC
With immense tragedies happening on an unfortunate regular basis, guns are a very focal topic where many have different ideas of what should be done about them. When talking about the idea of more laws against guns, we need to remember history and why many, especially marginalized groups, would still want to arms themselves.
Joining us is a member of the Rhode Island John Brown Gun Club, a leftist working class community defense organization who provides mutual aid from firearm safety education to hot meals for the hungry.
Help support the work they do! https://msha.ke/jbmutualaid/
PLR 37: Passing the Torch w/ AMOR
In this episode, we say farewell to Alex, and with that, we totally pass the torch from the original keepers of PLR to a new generation. We are joined by Isaiah, a potential new co-host, to talk about RIPTA wanting to avoid beaches, abusive east providence cops, Elongated Muskrat, and the recent testimony given for medicare for all.

Before he was on t shirts he was on a motorcycle, at least for a bit, traveling the countryside and becoming radicalized! Listen to Evan's brief, final episode about this origin story of a controversial person in history, and how frightfully little has changed since 1952.
PLR 36: Hot Affair Balloon
In this week's full episode, we regrettably have no interview. However, we still talk about the womxn project action on Tuesday, the futility of 'get out the vote,' the sale of the sunflower garden, teachers calling the cops on children, we skim the gubernatorial debate, and more!

PLR 34: We Can't Fix It w/ Wide Awakes PVD
In this episode of Providence [redacted] [redacted] [redacted], we bury a recent controversy, talk about what is going on at Classical School, observe the curious case of Mayor Elorza's SUV crash, and tear into Rep. Morgan's racist and homophobic bill.

PLR 33.5: Pride (2014) with Evan
BRITISH BUCKET CONSPIRACY?!?! CAN ANYONE CONFIRM??? Jk. In this half-episode Evan goes through the 2014 movie Pride, based on the very real, very gay story of a group of British queer activists who in 1984 raised support for miners and their families during a brutal year-long strike. The movie doesn't say the handsome leader is a communist, but we know he is. And you can be too!
PLR 33: Dropkicked Nazis w/ Red Ink Community Library

PLR 32.5: Adam Smith "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" Chapter 1
PLR Listeners!
Alex has been uploading theory readings to the Patreon. For his half episode this week, he's providing the first chapter of Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." If you don't know who Adam Smith was, you can consider him the daddy of Liberalism. He's also the #1 person on Marx's shit list in Capital. To understand Capital in its entirety, we have to understand what Adam Smith was arguing-- how he understood money, use and exchange value, trade, etc.
Practice is only useful for a revolution if there is a revolutionary theory to connect it to a broader goal. The weight isn't in favor of one, its a balance.

PLR 32: Goodbye Andy, Hello Carlos w/ Project Weber/RENEW
In this episode, we say so long to original host Andy and welcome a new co-host Carlos. We talk about the anti-trans legislation appearing in the RI House and Senate, and a few other things before welcoming some of the good folks from Project Weber/Renew on.

Special Announcement from PLR
Waiting for our comrade/loved one to come home.
PLR 30.5: Fear the Worm! (Evan does Dune with special guest Jay)
Many have tried and many have failed. Getting this movie made was a whole thing - was it worth the wait? Evan and J parse a storyline that, though written in the 60s, weirdly parallels today's literal and sociopolitical climates. Whether you prefer the 1984 psychedelic David Lynch version or the 2021 version chock-full of hot people, you know the sand worms are coming for us all.
PLR 30: Love Love w/ Medicare 4 All
If sometimes the audio sounds weird or choppy, we're sorry. It's one of the pitfalls of trying to record in two different parts of the world.
In this episode without Andy, Alex and Evan talk about Russia, mask mandates, a certain quack philosopher in Rhode Island, the recent Sanches and Jones campaign videos, a school district suing a student, and some leftist ideas for valentines day.

Then we interview some of the lovely people at Luna Community Care! Sorry for a short discussion session.

In this episode of the Rhode Island History Podcast Alex talks to historian Keith Stokes about the history of Newport's involvement in the triangle trade and what he calls "American Irony." Newport was the largest northern hub of the slave trade, despite the fact that it promoted religious tolerance.

PLR 28: Maple Candy for the Apocalypse w/ Haus of Codec
Welcome back ya'll! We decided to quit show notes. If you REALLY relied on the show notes, let us know, otherwise we thought it was a useless and time consuming step to uploading.
In this episode we talked about much of the news that has happened since we've been gone including cops not getting fired for being unvaccinated, the sleep-in outside the state house, student walk-outs, and redistricting.

[PREVIEW] Fall Politico Series 6: Corey "Focus" Jones
When asked what he would buy at a gas station very late at night after hanging out with his friends, Corey provided the very unexpected answers of 1) a honey bun, and 2) gummy life-savers. See what other unexpected answers Corey is capable of, as well as the extremely fascinating and at times harrowing story of his genesis as a candidate for Ward 3.

PLR 27: Season One Wrap Up
We've done it! We got introspective and reflective! One year down, many hopes and aspirations for the future. Listen to the abridged wrap-up conversation between Alex, Evan, and Andy before the December hiatus. What was successful and what will we do differently? Who will we have on next year? Which local group will Alex get into a Twitter feud with? Meet us in 2022 to find out.
Immense gratitude to everyone who we got to engage with in this last year. It's been mostly a blast and we've never felt closer to Providence. The future looks much brighter with all of you in it.
[PREVIEW] Fall Politico Series 5: Jackie Goldman is from Outer Space
Did you know Jackie Goldman doesn't like cereal? It's just one of the many reasons to suspect that they're not of this world.
Just kidding. We love Jackie, and we were very excited to have them on the show. We talked about vegan jewish baking, Jackie's ballet career, run-in as a non-binary candidate, and of course harm reduction!

PLR 25.8: The Bike Advocacy Debacle with James (@CarFreePVD)
Pictured is Alex's $100 bike. Custom made by a wonderful friend who repairs bikes. He bikes, sometimes, but not to work.
In this episode, Alex thought it necessary to have a conversation with a local bike advocate after his tweet about middle class white advocates went viral. He was threatened, he was asked whether he lobbied for fossil fuels, and he was sent a picture of someone's mediocre gentiles all because of a tweet. Listen to him plead his case, listen to James respond, and decide for yourself whether Alex still deserves to get a tomato thrown at him.

From SVU to X Files to Brooklyn 99 to Paw Patrol, are all beloved cop characters bastards? Yes. Yes, yes they are. Listen to Evan and special guest Jenna Pup gab about being an abolitionist who watches cop shows, i.e. the white privilege that allows us this critique, cognitive dissonance under capitalism, and how confusingly hot Kate Winslet is in her newest show. CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of police violence, s*xual violence, violence against s*x workers, mention of the word Tr*nny, and B99 final season spoilers.
