Church Urban Fund CEO - Bishop Rob Wickham

Church Urban Fund CEO - Bishop Rob Wickham

About Bishop Rob Before his appointment as Chief Executive of CUF, Robert Wickham served as the Bishop of Edmonton since September 2015. He was a Curate in the Parish Church of Willesden, a Team Vicar in the Parish of Old St Pancras, with a particular responsibility for St Mary’s Somers Town, and then for nine years as Rector of St John at Hackney, latterly becoming Area Dean of Hackney. Rob grew up in suburban Surrey, and attended Hampton School. He then went to University in Durham, where he studied geography, especially urban regeneration, and perceptual geography. He then studied for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. Since ordination Rob has completed an MA in Theology, Politics and Faith Based organisations from King's College. His thesis, now published, was based upon the political theology of Joshua Watson, the great Church Schools pioneer from the eighteenth century. In addition, a period of study leave led Rob to write a theological thesis on the creative use of church buildings. Indeed, whilst Rector of Hackney, the Church of St John at Hackney was reordered so that most aspects of Hackney life could be experienced, from concerts by Coldplay, Gary Barlow and Emilie Sande, jobs fairs, credit unions, to the most used knife amnesty bin in London. The reordering led to a reordering of its relationship with the local community, which became so needed in the aftermath of the disturbances in 2011.

Burnley York City, Bury footballer, currently with Notts Forest, Chris Brass The God Cast Interview.

Chris Brass (born 24 July 1975) is an English manager and former professional footballer, he who works in a senior recruitment role at Premier League club Nottingham Forest in a role across The Academy and First Team.[3] As a player, he was a defender in the Football League for Burnley, Torquay United, Halifax Town, York City and Bury. He also played non-league football for Harrogate Town, Southport and Hyde United. Between 2003 and 2004 at the age of 27 he was player/manager of York, he wouldn't return to management until 12 years later when he returned to Bury as manager. He has also worked on the coaching staff at Scunthorpe United, Torquay United and Wigan Athletic. Career Early career Born in Easington, County Durham, Brass began his career as a schoolboy at Ipswich Town before progressing through the youth system at Burnley as a trainee,[1] where he turned professional on 8 July 1993.[2] Burnley In 1994, Brass captained the Burnley A team as it won the Lancashire League. In need of first team experience, he joined Torquay United on loan in October 1994, playing seven league games in a two-month loan spell. Brass returned to Burnley, making his debut for them as a substitute in a 1–0 defeat away to Portsmouth, in January 1995. The following season, he again struggled to claim a regular place, but in the 1996–97 season established himself in the centre of the Burnley defence, and remained there for the next three seasons, though occasionally played out of position by manager Chris Waddle. By March 1998, such was the turmoil that the Clarets found themselves in, Brass was their longest serving player, and still only 22 years old. In that summer, Stan Ternent replaced Waddle, and made Brass captain, but the latter struggled to keep his form and found himself in the reserves. In the summer of 1999, Burnley signed Mitchell Thomas, resulting in Brass playing only occasionally for the first team. He went on a one-month loan to Halifax Town in September 2000, with the first of his six league games being a win against Torquay. After the loan was up, Halifax could not afford to sign him and he returned to the Burnley reserves, before joining York City on a free transfer in March 2001.[citation needed][4] He had played 134 league games for Burnley, scoring once, ironically against York City.[5]

He was instrumental in the production of the Fellternative fell running fanzine in the early 1990s. photo credit Kyla Goody Whalley recorded a song called "Stud Marks on the Summits", inspired by a chance meeting with legendary fell runner Bill Smith. Whalley took up fell running as a result. He was paraphrased as having said Smith "encapsulated the ethos of the sport – its emphasis on self-reliance and nature and its history."

Ian Mcnabb - The Icicle Works front man and Solo artist. The God Cast Interview.

The Icicle Works (also known as Icicle Works in the United States are an English alternative rock band, named after the 1960 short story "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" by science fiction author Frederik Pohl. They had a top 20 UK hit with "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" (1983). In the US and Canada, they had one top 40 hit, the 1984 single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)". Consisting of singer/guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Ian McNabb, drummer Chris Sharrock, and bassist Chris Layhe, the band released four albums from 1984 to 1988. The original band broke up in 1989, but McNabb has continued to perform under the Icicle Works name with various replacement members; this revised Icicle Works line-up still plays sporadic live dates After having been a solo act for 15 years, in 2006 McNabb reactivated The Icicle Works name for a series of six UK concerts in October of that year. This version of the band consisted of McNabb, former 'second-generation' Icicle Works bassist Roy Corkill, and two new members: keyboard player Richard Naiff and ex-Dodgy drummer Mathew Priest, both of McNabb's long-time solo touring band. Original drummer Chris Sharrock had been invited to play with the revived group, but declined to participate. That same year, the Icicle Works' self-titled debut album was reissued as both a 2-CD and limited edition 3-CD set, each featuring a wealth of bonus tracks and radio sessions. The Icicle Works appeared at GuilFest 2007 and played a nine-date UK tour in December 2007. McNabb and company played two free shows as 'The Icicle Works' in Liverpool in January 2008. Later in 2008, a compilation of unreleased early Icicle Works tracks and demos called Lost Icicles, Volume 1 was issued as a digital-only release. Lost Icicles, Volume 2, a recording of a live show from 1984, was issued as a digital-only release around the same time. McNabb continued to play gigs as a solo artist throughout 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the band's fifth album Permanent Damage was reissued in a 2-CD set with bonus tracks. Over the next two years, the band's three remaining studio albums were reissued in deluxe 2-CD and 3-CD sets, all featuring numerous bonus tracks. After a three-year hiatus from performing, the McNabb/Corkhill/Naiff/Priest line-up played a series of 30th Anniversary gigs as The Icicle Works in 2011. In an unrelated event, on 11 August of that year, original Icicle Works member Chris Layhe joined Ian McNabb onstage at a McNabb solo gig. The duo performed 3 Icicle Works songs and one cover song by The Clash. It was the first time McNabb and Layhe had performed together in 23 years. While McNabb continues to perform, record and release new material as a solo artist, The Icicle Works typically continue to play a handful of UK shows every year or two.

Figen Murray OBE - Mother of Martyn Hett, killed in the Manchester Arena Bombing in 2017

Figen Murray OBE - Mother of Martyn Hett, killed in the Manchester Arena Bombing in 2017

Figen was born in Istanbul and moved to Germany at the age of two in 1963. Twenty years later, she moved to the UK for a new adventure. Now, a mother of five children and grandmother to five boys, she resides in a peaceful part of south Manchester with husband of 30 years and counting, Stuart. For over 23 years, Figen worked as a counsellor, a life coach and offered clinical supervision to other counsellors too. She has always had a passion for listening to other people's troubles - helping them get back on track to lead happier, healthier lives is a role she finds both challenging and rewarding. Following the decision to no longer continue her work as a counsellor, Figen is now committed to promoting peace, kindness and tolerance in Martyn’s memory, whilst also working towards tangible changes that can help to ensure no other family has to go through what hers did. Figen started knitting bears a couple of years before Martyn died. She originally started knitting to look after her own mental health when she developed hearing loss on one side - it helped to keep her mind occupied and prevent her slipping into depression. Martyn helped boost recognition of her bears in 2016 when tweets about the teddies went viral on social media. Her online Depop shop, "Imperfect Hearts", sells knitted bears with anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia and sometimes just mundane day-to-day issues that her customers can relate to. When we grow up, we often forget how to play, so Figen believes every adult should own a teddy bear to bring an element of playfulness back into our lives and help put issues into perspective. She has now sold hundreds of them, which have made their way across the world. Her book “Bears Have Issues Too” helps to shine a light on the mental health of adults through her professional knowledge as a counsellor and her more personal, lived experience. In 2017 she created Jordan Bear in Martyn’s memory and set up a Facebook page dedicated to his travels across the world. Figen is the force behind Martyn's Law, a legislation which will require venues with a capacity of 100+ to improve security against the threat of terrorism, train their staff with free online training provided by the government, and one that requires all venues have a counter-terrorism plan in place. This began in early 2019 in Figen’s kicthen as an online petition which received over 23,000 signatures. Since then, Figen has been working with a team of co-campaigners and meeting government officials and ministers regularly to formulate how her vision would be put into practice and implemented as law. During this time, Figen also completed a Master’s Degree in counter-terrorism which helped her to gain a sound knowledge base on what exactly was needed out of this legislation in order for it to work best. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Salford University in 2022, and additionally made a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM). In recognition for her efforts within the security industry, Figen was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2020 Counter Terror Awards. She is also a member of the Senior Leadership team at TINYg. Her biggest and most proud achievement so far is being awarded an OBE in the 2022 New Year's Honours List. Whilst none of the work she does is done with the intent of self-gain, receiving her OBE made Figen aware that the work she does is being both noticed and valued, which is humbling and gives her the motivation to continue.

Helen Joyce - The God Cast interview

Helen Joyce is an Irish journalist and critic of the transgender rights movement. She studied as a mathematician and worked in academia before becoming a journalist. Joyce began working for The Economist as education correspondent for its Britain section in 2005 and has since held several senior positions, including finance editor and international editor. She published her book Trans: When Ideology Meets Reality in 2021. About Helen I’m a journalist: between 2005 and 2022 I was a staff writer for The Economist, where I held a variety of jobs including education editor, Brazil correspondent (based in São Paulo), International editor, Finance editor and Britain editor. I’m also an author: my first book, “Trans: When Ideology Meets Reality”, was published by OneWorld in July 2021. It was reissued in 2023 under a new title: “Trans: Gender Identity and the New Battle for Women’s Rights”. And I’m a feminist campaigner: in early 2022 I took a leave of absence from The Economist to work with start-up human-rights organisation Sex Matters, which campaigns for clarity about the two sexes, male and female, in law and in life. In early 2023 I decided to continue with my campaigning work rather than return to The Economist. “Trans” was an immediate bestseller and named by the Times, Spectator and Observer as one of their books of 2021. The paperback came out on May 5th 2022. It includes an entirely new foreword and afterword. An audiobook edition is also available, read by me. If you’d like to commission me to write for you, or to speak at an event, drop me a line on hjoycegender@gmail.com. Chine McDonald - The God Cast Interview

Chine McDonald - The God Cast Interview

ABOUT FR ALEX

Father Alex Frost was not always a man of the cloth. He found his calling while running an Argos store in his native Burnley, moonlighting as a stand-up comedian and die-hard fan of The Clarets and Depeche Mode.

But having achieved his profession, Fr Alex quickly recognised the 17,000 inhabitants of his new parish were in dire need of help. Burnley is typical of many towns across Britain: a place of run-down council estates, severe poverty litter, crime and drugs, but also a place where the sacred sits alongside the secular in an intimate and personal way. And so it was that he found himself running a food bank from a car park, helping the desperate amid his flock as the pandemic raged.

Fr Alex’s down-to-earth style of ministry struck a chord with people of all faiths, cultures and class at a time when the divide between rich and poor is widening cataclysmic-ally. But amid the tragedy, addiction, appalling loss, illness and neglect, there also lies hope, joy and moments of comedy. Our Daily Bread is as much the story of the rich cast of characters that cross the threshold of any church as it is our vicar’s. Through them it shows the continued relevance of the church for those in peril: the poor and the marginalised.

This heartfelt and moving book seeks to give a voice to the voiceless, charting the tragedy and pain, humour and hope which are ever-present in his community. It is ultimately about modern poverty – and how we all can, and should, espouse Christian virtues of love, kindness, tolerance.

ABOUT CHINE I have loved seeing my words on the page since I got my first byline in the school magazine, aged six years old. Born in Nigeria, I moved to the UK at the age of four. I read theology & religious studies at Cambridge University before training as a newspaper journalist and over the years have written for several regional and national publications. I’m a regular contributor to BBC Religion & Ethics programmes, including Thought for the Day on Radio 4’s Today programme, the Daily Service, and Prayer for the Day. My first book ‘Am I Beautiful?’ – explored body image among women of faith. In my spare time, I sit on a number of charity boards, including Greenbelt Festival, Christians in Media and Christians Against Poverty; and regularly speak and write on issues of race and faith. I’m lucky enough to say my day job is also a dream job - I’m director of Theos, the religion and society think tank. Previously, I headed up community fundraising and public engagement at international development charity Christian Aid. I live in south-east London and am wife to Mark and mum to an energetic toddler. My second book God Is Not a White Man? was published by Hodder & Stoughton in May 2021.

John Lowe MBE (born 21 July 1945) is an English former professional darts player. Along with Eric Bristow and Jocky Wilson, he was known for dominating darts during the 1980s. Lowe was world champion on three occasions, in 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was also a two-time winner of the Winmau World Masters and a two-time World Cup singles champion. In total, Lowe won 15 BDO and WDF majors. He held the World No. 1 ranking on four occasions. In October 1984, he became the first player to hit a televised nine-dart finish. Lowe is one of only six players to have won the World Championship three or more times, and was the first person to win it in three separate decades; along with Phil Taylor, he remains one of only two players to achieve this. Amidst growing dissatisfaction with the British Darts Organisation, Lowe was also one of 16 players who in 1993 broke away to form their own governing body, the World Darts Council (now known as the Professional Darts Corporation).Transcript

Jayne Ozanne - Living in Love and Faith and same sex relationships - The God Cast Interview.

Jayne Ozanne is a prominent gay evangelical who works to ensure full inclusion of all LGBTI people of faith within their faith communities, and within wider society as a whole. She is Director of both the Ozanne Foundation, which works with religious organisations around the world to eliminate discrimination based on sexuality or gender in order to embrace and celebrate the equality and diversity of all, and of the Global Interfaith Commission on LGBT+ Lives, which she launched in December 2020 bringing together hundreds of senior affirming faith leaders from around the world. Jayne was a founding member of the Archbishops’ Council for the Church of England (1999 – 2004) and is now once again a member of General Synod where she is involved in campaigning for a range of issues impacting those who are marginalised and excluded. In 2017 she led a debate on the dangers of Conversion Therapy within the Church of England, which resulted in the Synod calling on the government to ban it. In March 2019 she was appointed to the government’s LGBT Advisory Panel, from which she publicly resigned in March 2021, highlighting the increasingly “hostile environment” for LGBT+ people and the lack of progress towards a ban on “conversion therapy”. In September 2020 she set up the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, which she chairs and which brings together survivor groups, LGBT organisations, faith leaders and academics who are all working together for a ban. She is actively engaged through her writings and broadcasts in helping religious groups develop and promote a positive ethic towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. As a survivor of conversion therapy, her tag line is “Unashamedly Gay, Unashamedly Christian” and as such works to be a role model for LGBT people of faith. Thanks to her autobiography, Just Love, she is featured as one of Wiki Ezvid’s Top 5 Non-Fiction Authors of Books about Christianity.

Rudy Sarzo - Ozzy Osbourne Band, Quiet Riot - Whitesnake, The God Cast Interview.

Rudy Sarzo’s bass-playing resume is as remarkable as it is impressive. Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Dio, Whitesnake, the Guess Who and more; it might actually be easier to list the people this extraordinary rock bassist hasn’t played with over the past nearly five decades. Not only did Sarzo play with Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne’s band, he also was one of Randy’s closest friends. In fact, his book, Off the Rails: Aboard the Crazy Train in the Blizzard of Ozz, is a must-read for any serious Rhoads fan. Rudy kindly took the time to recall some key moments during his career with Fr Alex on The God Cast.

Running a food bank from a car park in Burnley, helping the desperate amid his flock as the pandemic raged, Fr Alex’s down-to-earth style of ministry struck a chord with people of all faiths, cultures and classes across the UK in a time when the divide between rich and poor widens cataclysmically. The Church of England priest, who sports tattoos of his favourite band Depeche Mode, has become the last bastion of support for many in the aftermath of austerity measures, Government cuts and Covid 19 upon a community already ravaged by poverty, addiction and neglect.

The Milltown Brothers - Simon Nelson - The God Cast Interview

The Milltown Brothers - Simon Nelson - The God Cast Interview

Coming From The Mill From Colne in Lancashire, the Milltown Brothers first burst onto the indie scene in 1989 with the ‘Coming From The Mill EP’ getting single of the week in NME. Second indie single ‘Which Way Should I Jump’ started a bidding war between the majors. Signing to A&M worldwide in 1990, WWSIJ was re-recorded & broke into the UK charts at Number 38. America liked it & put it to Number 10 in the US Rock Chart. The album – Slinky – was a revelation and pushed the boundaries for their peers. Defying the critics who had incorrectly labelled them as baggy the MBs delivered an absolute classic album of catchy, punchy songs, perfectly paced & well-balanced. The album received a maximum 5 Stars in Q Magazine Disaster struck with the release of their next single ‘Here I Stand’. Playing 3 times a day in independant record shops up & down the country for weeks before the release, the appearances helped the single achieve a predicted entry into the Top 20. The UK Record Industry however, due to the volume of sales from the shops played in, decided to ‘weight’ the single, fearing chart-rigging. The single missed entry into the charts (along with a planned TOTP performance) & peaked at Number 41. A&M bottled it & despite new material being ready for release that year – they put the band ‘on the shelf’ for 2 years and eventually picked the songs for their 2nd studio album – ‘Valve’. The album fared less well than Slinky, receiving average reviews. With a generally disappointing choice of songs, time has since shown that a dynamite second album could have been released, had the band been allowed to go their own way. After years of contractual exile, a tour which received no advertising & singles released which the band did not even want on an album – the band walked from A&M. It took 10 years for the band to work together again & in March 2004, they released their third studio album – Rubberband. Critically acclaimed & probably their finest release, Rubberband came out on their own label and was made available via the website at http://www.milltownbrothers.co.uk. Playing to their strengths, it once more demonstrated their head for melody, band dynamic & Matt Nelsons strongest set of songs yet heard. Described in Record Collector as ‘a faultless third album’, it is one of few truly great UK band albums to be released since 2000.

Fr Luke Larner (Class) - The God Cast Interview.

Fr Luke Larner (Class) - The God Cast Interview.

A former bricklayer, Luke cut his teeth as lay pioneer minister in Luton serving communities affected by homelessness, violence and addiction. Luke is part-time priest-in-charge of the diverse parish of St Andrew in Luton and is studying for a doctorate in practical theology at the University of Roehampton, researching mission pneumatologies in the Church of England. Luke’s teaching passions include mission, liberation theologies, and practical skills for social justice engagement. He is currently helping to develop an international network of scholars and activists engaging with theologies of labour and class struggle in partnership with the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Influenced by the radical Anglo-Catholic tradition, Luke’s faith and ministry are shaped by a weaving of sacraments and social justice. A tertiary Franciscan, Luke loves to be outside cycling, kayaking, or walking with his family smiling at the birds and the trees. Confounding the Mighty: Stories of Church, Social Class and Solidarity Paperback – 28 Aug. 2023 It is long past time for the church to talk seriously about social class. Bringing together the stories of eight contemporary Christian ministers and theologians from working-class backgrounds, and putting their own life experiences into conversation with theological reflection, Confounding the Mighty explores what role class plays in the life of Churches, education establishments and social justice movements in 21st Century Britain and beyond. Written from a diverse variety of social locations, chapters explore how class relates to faith, Church, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, education, leadership, work and wider social justice issues. While lamenting injustice and personal experiences of oppression, this book suggests radical changes in how Christians, churches and theologians relate to class issues, pointing towards renewed structures and practices to bring class justice in churches and wider society. Recognizing that class is a thorny issue, the book seeks to bring a progressive theological perspective on class which pays close attention to related issues and promotes liberation for all.

Pete Williams - Dexy's, Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Bureau The God Cast Interview.

Born to Black Country parents just inside a new decade, Pete went to school, had a paper round, dreamed and played clarinet. At age 14 he bought a bass guitar and was soon playing in various bands appearing in social clubs around the industrial West Midlands. Four years later he was invited by an old school friend to join a “new wave soul group” as yet unnamed, which later became DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS. Their first release"Dance Stance"was. issued on Bernie Rhodes Oddball label and soon after they were invited to support THE SPECIALS on the first 2TONE tour. After recording “Searching For The Young Soul Rebels” (an album considered by many to be one of the best debut LPs by any UK band) and garnering a U.K. No1 single with “Geno”, extensive touring and many festival appearances followed. Pete left Dexys Midnight Runners in Zurich at the end of an exhausting trans-European tour; returned to England and formed THE BUREAU. THE BUREAU had top ten singles “Only For Sheep” and “Let Him Have It” in Australia and Canada, and toured Europe and the U.S. with The Pretenders. Their eponymous album was left inexplicably unreleased and overlooked in the U.K. They disbanded in 1983. (“The Bureau” finally saw the light of day with a release in 2005). After a short siesta Pete, as vocalist, hoofer, raconteur and front-man, formed THESE TENDER VIRTUES with Fred Skidmore. Some called them “The Vicars of Vaudeville”, others “Dickensian nutters”. These boys, with hearts like the afternoon; completely and wilfully out of step with the mid 80s trends, gigged extensively and toured Britain. The E.P. “The Continuing Saga” and a single “Waltz” were released through Cartel/Rough Trade, but after almost a decade of continual recording, rehearsing and touring, Pete called it a day for THESE TENDER VIRTUES.

Melanie Sykes - The God Cast Interview

Hosted by Fr Alex Frost, Vicar St Matthews Burnley, Follow on Twitter @alexdjfrost Melanie Sykes has been a face on our screens, a voice on our radios for nearly thirty years. As a presenter and broadcaster people turned to her for her humour, her honesty and insight. But between all the interviews and chat shows, is a life unseen, a story unsaid. Her journey – from up north to down south, from Manchester to LA and via London, Paris and India, and through the eye of the storm of celebrity culture is a rollercoaster ride. Sex, drugs and rock and roll, certainly, but also brass bands and ice cream vans, broken hearts and healing adventures – a search not for fame but for freedom. Her autism diagnosis in midlife has supercharged that journey – and means this isn’t a story just of breakdown, but of breakthrough. Funny, furious and gloriously frank, this is a book that lifts the lid on being a woman in the media, navigating relationships, and being a neurodivergent person speaking up in a neurotypical world. Illuminated is Melanie, in her own inimitable voice.

Sunder Katwala - How to Be a Patriot - The God Cast Interview

Sunder Katwala - How to Be a Patriot - The God Cast Interview

On race, nationhood, belonging and Britain’s identity crisis. Sunder Katwala grew up with some identity questions to work through. As a half-Indian, Irish Catholic kid, the chequered history of post-imperial Britain seemed very personal. Yet he came to realise that, with that background, he could hardly be anything but proudly British. And feeling British was getting much easier once the banana-throwing racists on the football terraces and Norman Tebbit’s divisive cricket test gave way to a softer patriotism as the spirit of the Britpop era carried through to Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony. Gazza’s tears and Gareth Southgate had changed what it meant to be English too. Having put his own search for an inclusive patriotism back on track, Sunder wondered why so many other English liberals seemed unable to get over their fear of flags. But how much use is it to secure a confident sense of personal and national identity if your country starts falling apart all around you? This book moves from a personal journey to navigate the state of the nation, and the many identity crises of this increasingly disunited Kingdom – from extremism and integration after 7/7; fears of immigration and the deep divides of Brexit; the resurgence of online racism and raging culture wars over what our history means today. As Scotland decides whether to vote to end the Union, Sunder tries to find out if he might now find himself doomed to be the last British patriot of them all.
