Episode 137: Hormones and Menopause: What You Need to Know
Has your doctor ever discussed testing your hormone levels? For that matter, have they discussed much around perimenopause or merely offered an anti-anxiety drug?
That's the case for most women.
In this episode I'm speaking with Linda Stephens, a nutritionist, personal trainer and coach for women in midlife. She's developed a comprehesive six week program taught virtually, Midlife Mastery, that educates wome on how their bodies change in midlife. The program covers science-backed data for hormone balance, longevity, mood, libido, and weight loss.
Some of the things we discussed:
- Why doctors don't discuss testing your hormone levels and why you need to advocate for yourself.
- What questions you should be asking your doctor.
- Exactly what blood tests you should have done.
- The most important vitamins for midlife women.
- The facts about hormone replacement therapy.
Linda has a pdf check list of what we should be looking for
The book she mentions and recommends we all read is Estrogen Matters: Why Taking Hormones in Menopause Can Improve Women's Well-Being and Lengthen Their Lives -- Without Raising the Risk of Breast Cancer Learn more about Linda and her Midlife Mastery Program here.

Episode 136: How to Manage Grief and Loss with Kate Champion
This was not how I thought this episode would go. Kate Champion is a therapist and best-selling author of Never Too Late: Inspiration, Motivationaand Sage Advice from 7 Later-in-Life Athletes and Your Are Limitless; Anxiety, Grief, Trauma, Addiction: 7 Inspiring Stories of Hope & Healing. I had intended on talking about her first book - stories of athletic achievement later in life.
But we started talking about grief and loss, what I've experienced and what she's experienced and this episode became something more powerful than I would have imagined.
Some of the things we discussed were:
Healing in nature - letting go of grief on the trail and the powerful connection that happens when you share stories with other women.
How our grief can't be dismissed or "cured" but rather integrated into our lives.
What friends can do to support someone who has experienced a death.

Alison Young is an expert at reinvention. She went from being the Principal Flutist with the Boston Symphony to a syndicated radio host at American Public Media and then, after a cancer diagnosis, to being a backpacker in her early 50's and walking 12,000 miles on six continents!
In fact, she walked the entire length of New Zealand. Like Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, Alison also hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. Doing this alone, in her 50's is hard enough but she also had the beginnings of debilitating arthritis.
Alison's story of the dangers along the trail as well as the exhiliration and life lessons is powerful. We also discussed:
- The importance of being curious rather than certain.
- How and why to quit strategically.
- Why she chose to hike New Zealand.

You can subscribe to this podcast here.

midlife and it's critical that we maintain our strength to avoid fractures.
Weightlifting is the key to keeping you strong but it also helps you become more energized AND actually lose weight!
Kim Rahir is a health coach who started weightlifting when she was diagnosed with MS. Her doctor put her on a series of injections to help with the MS symptoms but she wanted to find a way to keep herself healthy without the injections. While she acknowledges that this won't work for everyone, she does say that by getting your power back you have a much better chance of fighting a chronic illness.
Kim is now a European Champion in Master Weighlifting and is on a mission to help middle aged women embrace muscle and strength as the one-stop-shop solution for a host of health problems we face.

Episode 131: How People Pleasing is Hurting Your Career and Your Family
We have been told since we were little girls to "play nice" and "get along with others." Somehow we've translated that into doing everything for everyone - and making ourselves emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted in the process.
In this solo episode I'm sharing why and how you need to stop people pleasing whether it's with a client, boss, your kids or your husband!
Episode 130: The hidden struggles entrepreneurs face
Female entrepreneurs deal with a TON of s&%t! And too often they don't have people to talk to about it to and get support.
Enter BOSSY.
BOSSY is a networking group founded in 2014 by Kelly Metras and Kelly Bush. They started the group BOSSY after finding that as business owners, they lacked peers to discuss management and operation issues, issues with employees, marketing, legal requirements and standards, and more.
Having few people to relate to the stressors of owning and running a business, especially as women, Kelly and Kelly set off to create a safe space for women to gather, for free, to learn from one another, make friends, vent, ask questions, share experiences and more.
BOSSY has organically grown to include hundreds of remarkable, driven, and passionate women business owners in Rochester, NY
Kelly, Kelly, and I had a great conversation. Some of the things we discussed:
- The one word women never want to call themselves.
- How being a midlife woman makes us better entrepreneurs.
- How to navigate working with your husband.
- How to figure out what works for you in balancing work/life.

Episode 128: - Embracing a Queer Life in Midlife with Jen Berlingo
Outwardly, Jen Berlingo had the perfect life - a beautiful home and family and a great career. She had established a family, career, and persona that fulfilled social, familial, and cultural expectations. When she entered her forties, she realized that something didn't feel right. She reframed the midlife transition as a midlife emergence® to make meaning of her own transformation during this time of life when she dared to reveal the raw, sometimes inconvenient truth of who she was.
Today, through her own experiences, as well as decades of working as a psychotherapist and coach with those facing similar choices, Jen now midwifes the modern woman through her unique, non-linear midlife passage.
Her book Midlife Emergence:Free Your Inner Fire is part personal memoir, part coaching manual that helps women explore their true desires in midlife, whatever they are. It's an empowering and transformative book for every woman - I literally couldn't put it down!
Some of the things we discussed:
- The decision to open her marriage and practice ethical non-monogamy.
- How, as women, we give our power away.
- The myth of a "broken family."
- Her daughter's experience in a blended family with a queer mom.
- How we set ourselves on fire to keep others warm.

This is the last episode of 2023 and I'm so honored that you've tuned into this podcast.
I know most of you have set some goals for 2024 as you probably have in past years. But how often have you been able to achieve them?
In this episode I'm giving you tips on how you can absolutely succeed in achieving your goals in 2024 whether it's starting a business, getting out of debt or finding a new romantic partner.
A few key points:
- Be careful who you share your goals with. Family and friends who come from a mindset of lack and fear won't necessarily be supportive and can mess with your mindset.
- Procrastination is a symptom of fear and self-doubt. You need to take ACTION if you want to change your life.
- You can "trick" your mind into believing you've already achieved your goal which will allow you to take confident actions that lead to successful results.
If you want support in making 2024 the year you finally achieve your goals, I have a FREE workshop "Mindset Reset:Grow Your Business and Wealth in 2024"
We'll explore how your past stories from your childhood impact your thoughts and actions.
How to break through the plateaus in your business so you can start expanding your business and income.
The power of aligning your business and personal goals to increase your wealth and end the cycle of debt.
It starts January 8th and the three videos are delivered right to your inbox so you can watch curled up in front of a fire!

Episode 108: Why the F*#@ Am I Still Not Organized? with Star Hansen
That question is the perfect title for my guest Star Hansen's new book.
Star is known as the Clutter Whisperer and after speaking with her I understand why!
Star helps people look at clutter in an entirely different way - not thinking about storage bins, labels, and folders, but digging into the deeper meaning of their stuff to help figure out WHY they feel overwhelmed by the clutter in the first place.
This was one of the conversations where the light bulb goes on!
Some of the things we discussed:
- The four different types of clutter.
- How to manage when you and your partner have different ideas about clutter.
- How we can allow clutter to show us what we really need emotionally.
- The powerful connection between grief and clutter.
And, Star is offering my listeners a FREE copy of her book! You can grab it here.

Episode 107: Here's the problem with The Golden Bachelor
The gorgeous man. The women fighting over him. Sigh....
I will admit, I've never seen the show. I've read two reviews that are completely different.
But from the trailers and promos the problem I see is that not one of these women are being themselves. Where's the episode where they sit around in sweats watching Netflix?
How about an episode where they don't have their hair and makeup done?
In other words - where are the real midlife women???
This show was about expanding the audience and showing diversity. I'm not seeing it.
Have you watched it? What are your thoughts? Please post below - I'd love to know.

Episode 106: How to Love and Accept Your Body in Midlife with Debra Benfield
The issues of eating disorders and disordered eating among midlife women is not often discussed but is definitely a problem. Studies report that up to 15% of women in midlife can suffer from an eating disorder.
Often this is fueled by changes to our body that come about during menopause. Society tells us that we should still have a body like we did in our 20's and 30's and that's just not realistic.
My guest on this podcast is Debra Benfield a self-proclaimed Body Justice Warrior.
Debra works with women to first transform their mindset and shift thoughts about their bodies - to embrace and love their midlife body.
This was such an important and enlightening conversation! We covered:
- Why BMI is BS!
- Why carbs are necessary for us in midlife (so have that piece of bread!)
- Why diet drugs can be a dangerous fad.
- Why you should never get dieting ideas from social media.
- 3 steps to transform your thoughts about your body and agism.
This is a MUST LISTEN episode for you and any of your friends who might be struggling with body image issues.
You can learn more about Debra at her Instagram page @agingbodyliberation.

Episode 105: The Secrets to Building Unshakable Self-Confidence
How often do you second guess yourself or look for validation from someone else that you’ve made the right choice? We know that confidence is sexy. Confidence shifts opinions.
So why do so many women have trouble speaking up, advocating, and being decisive?
In this episode, we delve into the crucial topic of self-confidence. It's essential to recognize the power of confidence – it not only shapes our own beliefs but can also influence the opinions of others. Research even suggests that confidence can outweigh correctness in its impact.
Confidence is not just a personal attribute; it's a catalyst for change. When we stand confidently in our power, we might make significant life-altering decisions, like changing careers or ending relationships. Our innate reptilian brain, wired to protect us, often resists change, which can lead to self-doubt.
Key points:
- Reframing your mindset around the need to be liked to recognize how people pleasing is counter productive.
- Why your reptilian brain equates confidence with change and tries to scare you into staying as you are.
- Understanding why uncertainty is not bad.
- Three steps to help you start building unshakable self-confidence.
If you want to break through self-doubt once and for all and show up confident and in control, I've got a self-study mini course Seven Days to Unshakable Self-Confidence with daily messages from me as well as exercises and resources.

The conversation also delves into why confidence can be elusive for many. The episode points out that the fear of disrupting the status quo and avoiding conflict can lead individuals, particularly women, to downplay their abilities and withhold their true selves. The desire to be liked is deeply ingrained, making it a constant struggle for many to overcome.

Daughter Lessons - with Bernadette Catalana
As my baby girl is heading off to college I've been thinking about everything I want to tell her. That's why I loved this conversation with Bernadette Catalana, author of Daughter Lessons.
This sweet book is the warm hug you want to give your daughters - everything you want for them as they head off on their life adventures. The three themes in the book are leading, learning, and loving.
Bernadette and I covered so much in our chat including:
- Our relationships with our own mothers and how we didn't really know who they were as a woman.
- How we learn our parenting style from our own mothers and how that impacts our relationship with our daughters.
- The strength we gain in midlife and how that allows us to propel into our next amazing chapter.

How to speak up ... and get! ... what you want.
In today's episode we're talking about how to end the "polite girl syndrome." You know what I'm talking about - the all too common habit of not advocating for our needs, or demanding what we're worth, or going with the flow even when it's not what we want.
This happens in our personal and professional lives. In fact, according to several studies, 60% of women have never negotiated their salary and 72% would leave their job before asking for a raise!
It's time we put our big girl pants on and start asking for what we want.
In this episode I'm going to give you the 4 things you should do in order to be more self-confident and get what you want in any situation.

What it's like to have your teenager as your business partner with Andi Caulfield.
Grab my book Daily Inspirations for Midlife Women: A Guide to Peace, Joy, Confidence, and Abundance here. When Andi Caulfield's 14 year-old daughter needed to do a fundraiser for school she didn't want to "just sell some poor quality chocolate that no one really wanted." She wanted to sell something that's healthy and useful and they came up with the idea of selling organic lip balms.
Not only did her daughter raise $2,000 for her fundraiser but it was the impetus for Andi to leave her executive-level job in tech and start Good Things Organics with her daughter. The company makes organic fragrance and skin-care products that are clean and naturally sourced and can now be found in high-end spas and hotels around Canada and the United States.
I absolutely fell in love with their fragrances and thoroughly enjoyed my chat with Andi.
Here are a few things we covered:
- The challenges and joys of having her teenaged daughter as her business partner.
- Finding a team of women who complimented her talents to build the company.
- How she's overcoming her fear of scaling the business
- What she wants every woman in midlife to understand about following her dream.
You can learn more about Good Things Organics and order products here.

How to handle toxic relationships in a healthy way.
Twitter wars, flaming, trash talking - publicizing anger and resentment towards someone online either outright or through veiled comments is an everyday occurrence now.
Letting everyone know what a S%&T your ex-spouse or friend is and everything he/she did to you might feel good at first but ultimately it doesn't allow you to let the emotions go and move forward. Plus, it's really not classy.
In this episode I'm talking about:
- Healthy ways to deal with your feelings of anger, resentment and grief.
- The importance of forgiving yourself as well as the other person.
- Why women stay in relationships that are unhealthy.
- The exact sentences to use to end a toxic friendship.
