Battling storm Eunice, while hypo, with a dodgy Libre sensor

Battling storm Eunice, while hypo, with a dodgy Libre sensor

What fun I've had today...

It's been a crazy one and it doesn't help that since Thursday night my Freestyle Libre sensor has been acting up.

The trust we place in our tech was something I hadn't properly considered until I realised that I couldn't trust it any more.

Have you had an experience like this has your type 1 diabetes tech ever let you down?

How I'm fixing the worst blood sugar of my life

How I'm fixing the worst blood sugar of my life

In this episode, after seeing some pretty shocking results I come up with a plan of action to improve my blood sugar after a difficult month.

The Freestyle libre, like many systems of its kind, offers a lot of data. If you care to look at it.

The fact is, I haven’t and don’t really log into my LibreView account and get an overview of how I’m doing.

I had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn’t going to be good. It wasn’t.

All through December and into the New Year I have been experiencing the worst blood sugar of my life.

Before lockdown changed everything type 1 diabetes wasn’t that bad for me. But after a period of diabetes burnout, I knew that my levels hadn’t been great.

But looking at the data you can start to see the areas where you are going wrong, and it can help you work out where you can be better.

So working out more, carb counting, and eating a better diet will all help me get to where I was. Hopefully.

Consistency is key though! @jamielowetv

Diabetes made me freak out on the motorway

Diabetes made me freak out on the motorway

Type 1 diabetes doesn't often get in the way of much for me. Stubborn highs and annoying hypos are usually something I can brush off with ease and continue with whatever I'm doing.

However, last weekend whilst driving home to see my brother's new dog I couldn't seem to get my blood sugar to remain stable. I treated a near hypo at a service station, waited the right amount of time, and continued driving. But when my blood sugar began to drop again all of a sudden I didn't feel safe on the roads.

The only problem is the stretch of road I was on had no junctions, exits, or services for what felt like miles. Trapped on the motorway and slightly panicking here's what I did.

Bouncing back from diabetic burnout...

Bouncing back from diabetic burnout...

But what I do know is that I’m ready to return. To come back, to get back to work.

I suppose I was in denial a lot of the time, I was lying to myself a little bit about how hard these past 24 months have hit me.   My way of dealing with things before 2020 is to dive into work, start a project, and do what I love.  However, I got to a point sometime in the summer last year when I realized that I was just going through the motions.

I wasn’t doing the best that I could do, and I wasn’t particularly proud of what I was making.  But that was all I could manage. Creating regular content for YouTube, podcast, TikTok, and working as a freelance journalist was just too much for me to handle.   Plus I was getting sick, really sick, the diabetes demons came for me hard so I had no choice but to reduce my workload.

I’ve spoken to doctors and other people and I think that I was suffering from a bit of burnout.   After reducing my workload and putting myself first things started to get better and slowly my health improved.

Diabetes Treatments From Tarantula Venom?!

Diabetes Treatments From Tarantula Venom?!

Dr Nigel Irwin has discovered that molecules found in spider venom have the potential to help us produce more insulin and lower blood sugar levels. His PhD student will now unpick exactly how these molecules could help the pancreas to work better, and test if they’re safe in mice. This could pave the way for new and improved treatments for people with Type 2 diabetes, which could help to lower their risk of complications.

LOST JOBS, LOW POINTS AND NEW HOPE (maybe) - 2020 in review

So this year was rough, you know that already. But since I haven't posted anything yet in December I wanted to share with you my ups and downs this year. I always say that my podcast was originally started to allow me to get things off my chest but it's grown to be so much more than that. But this episode is back to basics, it's been such a challenging year I felt I needed to get it all off my chest and here it is.

Best friends for 10 years, BOTH Type 1 Diabetic - Young Wild and Diabetic - All 4 One Podcast

In this episode i'm joined by Lucy and Chloe who run the Instagram page @youngwildanddiabetic. The girls took the plunge and became content creators at the start of lockdown and over the course of a few months have amassed thousands of loyal followers. They are at the start of something big here and it was a pleasure to chat to them on the show.

Here's what the girls had to say:  we are Lucy & Chloe and have been best friends for over 10 years now. In 2012 Lucy was diagnosed with Type 1 and took it in her stride with me by her side learning about T1 and being there throughout her highs and lows. And then in 2018 3 days after my 21st birthday (after being ill for a long time) I was diagnosed with T1 through severe DKA! It was such a shock for us - I think we still are in disbelief really. But it has brought us closer than we ever thought possible. We started our page - @youngwildanddiabetic on insta at the beginning of lockdown but it’s been something we wanted to do for a long time and finally we felt why not!   We really want to use our platform to share our stories and raise awareness of T1 and how we don’t let it stop us from living our best lives haha - our experiences though diagnosis etc have been completely different and we love learning from each other and others in the community.

The Diabetic Ironman - Jack Anderson

Hey guys, thanks for downloading the latest episode, did you know that this episode is available IN VIDEO? Head to my YouTube channel to watch it in full (www.youtube.com/jamielowetv)

In this episode i'm joined by personal trainer Jack Anderson. After struggling to come to terms with being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his teenage years, Jack is now on a mission to prove that pancreas or no pancreas if you put your mind to it you can pull of some pretty amazing things. Jack also shares his wisdom to help up as get more active as lockdown comes to an end. Let us know on social media if Jack inspires you to get moving!

Here's what Jack has to say about his challenge: 'On the 2nd of January 2015, at the age of 15,  I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I always remember being told about the implications and limitations this condition would have on my life. I have always been extremely active, playing a number of sports and thankfully Diabetes has not got in the way too much. However I am curious, I want to see what my body is physically capable of. I want to see if it is possible to complete one of the most grueling ultra events as a Type 1 diabetic. I want to inspire and motivate others with medical conditions, not to be defined by them. To accept them, to battle them and to conquer them. To not let them stop you from doing what you want to do, and not letting them stop you from becoming who you want to be. My name is Jack Anderson, I am 20 years old and I am going to be attempting an IronMan triathlon on the 17th of October, 10 days before I'm 21'.
